EV and new-age automotive funds carry ordinary equity-market risk plus concentrated exposure to an industry that is still developing and highly sensitive to policy. A fund can lose money if electric-vehicle demand grows more slowly than expected, manufacturers fight price wars, battery materials or components become scarce, subsidies change, or a small group of holdings dominates returns. Technology replacement, cybersecurity incidents, production problems, currency movements and a normal automotive recession can add further losses. The fund structure does not remove those risks; it determines how widely they are spread.
What an EV or new-age automotive fund actually owns
“EV fund” is a broad label. One portfolio may hold companies whose revenue is almost entirely electric vehicles, while another may include traditional automakers, battery-cell manufacturers, charging networks, semiconductor suppliers, mining companies, software developers or autonomous-driving businesses. Some index rules also admit a company when EV activity is only a small part of its total revenue. A holding can therefore bring risks from commercial vehicles, engines, industrial chemicals, cloud software or other businesses that have little to do with EV adoption.

Pure-play portfolios usually move more sharply because their earnings depend on a narrow set of products and customers. A diversified automotive fund may include established manufacturers and parts suppliers whose conventional businesses provide some offset, but it can lag a rally in dedicated EV shares. Active funds add manager-selection risk; index funds add methodology, rebalancing and tracking-difference risk. Read the current prospectus and holdings file rather than relying on the fund’s name.

| Mobility technology | Charging, software, connectivity and autonomous-driving companies | Regulatory approval, cybersecurity, standards and uncertain monetization |
Developing-industry risk and uncertain consumer adoption
Electric-vehicle technology and business models are not mature across every market segment. SEC fund disclosures describe the technology as “a relatively new technology” subject to the risks of a developing industry. The same disclosures warn that EV products “could fail to ‘catch on’ with consumers in a meaningful way.” Adoption depends on vehicle prices, financing costs, charging access, electricity prices, resale values, model availability and consumer preferences. A fund can be hurt even when unit sales rise if growth is slower than the valuations already assume.

Companies may have only a few models, limited production history or insufficient cash to expand factories and service networks. A delayed launch, quality issue or demand shortfall can force discounting and additional capital raising. Smaller issuers may depend on a single battery supplier, platform or fleet customer. Equity investors bear dilution risk if a company must sell shares to fund losses, tooling or new plants.
Demand can also vary by geography and vehicle type. Passenger cars, commercial vans, buses and two-wheelers have different purchasing cycles and incentive regimes. A fund’s headline exposure to “EVs” does not reveal which segment supplies its earnings.
Competition, price wars and the automotive cycle
Automotive manufacturing has high fixed costs. Factories, tooling, engineering teams and dealer or service networks must be paid even when volumes fall. When several manufacturers add capacity at the same time, they may cut prices to keep plants running. Price reductions can increase deliveries but reduce gross margin, cash flow and the value of older inventory. Suppliers can suffer when customers demand lower component prices or postpone orders.
SEC disclosures identify limited products and resources, competition, production delays, regulation and market volatility as material risks. Traditional automotive exposures add labor negotiations, strikes, recalls, warranty claims, shipping interruptions and higher steel, energy or semiconductor costs. Vehicle purchases are also cyclical: households and businesses commonly defer them during recessions or when loan rates rise. A fund that owns both start-ups and established manufacturers can therefore experience a simultaneous growth-stock sell-off and an industry downturn.

Interest rates matter twice. Higher rates reduce the present value investors assign to distant profits and increase monthly payments for vehicle buyers. They also raise the cost of factory construction and inventory financing. A fund may fall even without a change in long-term EV demand if the market reprices growth companies.
Battery supply chains, geopolitics and logistics
The battery industry is geographically concentrated. The International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2025 reports that EV-battery demand exceeded 950 GWh in 2024, up 25% from 2023, while China produced 80% of global battery cells in 2024. This concentration can lower costs during normal operations, but it also creates exposure to export controls, tariffs, shipping bottlenecks, diplomatic disputes, sanctions, power shortages and local factory disruptions.
Supply-chain risk is not limited to cells. Cathode and anode materials, separators, power electronics, battery-management systems and specialized machinery may come from a small number of countries or vendors. A disruption can delay vehicle deliveries, strand inventory or force an expensive change of supplier. Currency movements can amplify the effect for a fund priced in a different currency from its holdings.

The IEA has warned that very low prices for lithium and other critical minerals can discourage new mine investment. If projects are cancelled or delayed, later demand growth can meet inadequate supply, producing a shortage and renewed price volatility. Low input prices may therefore help manufacturers today while increasing the probability of a future supply shock.

Policy, subsidies and trade rules
EV economics often incorporate government support. Tax credits, purchase subsidies, fleet mandates, charging grants, zero-emission rules, local-content requirements and restrictions on foreign entities can determine which models qualify and where a company can sell. Eligibility may depend on vehicle price, battery components, mineral origin, assembly location or the buyer’s income. A change in any condition can reduce demand or increase a manufacturer’s costs.
Policy risk is two-sided. A new incentive can lift orders and valuations, but investors may be paying for that improvement before it appears in financial statements. A later government can narrow eligibility, delay payments, remove a credit or redirect funds to another technology. Trade measures can protect domestic production while making imported cells, minerals or vehicles more expensive. Foreign-entity restrictions may prevent a company from using a low-cost supplier or exclude its products from a subsidized market.
These changes have real strategic effects. Policy shifts have already prompted some automakers to delay or revise EV plans. A delay can preserve cash in the short term yet leave suppliers with unused capacity and investors with lower expected growth. Treat every subsidy-driven forecast as conditional on the rules in the relevant country and the date on which those rules apply.

Technology change, obsolescence and cybersecurity
Battery chemistry, charging hardware, power semiconductors and vehicle software are evolving quickly. A fund may hold a company whose current product becomes less competitive after a cheaper chemistry, faster charging standard or more efficient drivetrain reaches the market. Existing factories can become stranded if a new design requires different equipment. Companies must spend continuously on research, testing and retooling, and there is no guarantee that spending produces a commercially successful product.

Connected vehicles and charging networks expand the attack surface. A cyber incident could interrupt charging, expose customer data, disable fleet operations or trigger a costly recall. Software defects and failures in driver-assistance systems can lead to regulatory investigations, liability claims and reputational damage. SEC disclosures specifically identify cybersecurity threats and technology substitution among the risks facing EV companies.
Autonomous-driving exposure adds another layer of uncertainty: approval standards, liability rules, mapping data and public acceptance can differ by jurisdiction. A fund may own such companies even when autonomous driving contributes little current revenue, so examine the issuer’s stated revenue test and the index methodology.

The IEA reported that pure-play EV market capitalisation fell nearly 20% on average relative to 2022 during a period marked by price wars, supply disruption and slower-growth expectations. That figure describes a market-capitalisation comparison, not a forecast or a guaranteed annual loss, but it illustrates how quickly expectations can change. A thematic fund can fall more than the broad market when its holdings share the same growth assumptions.
Concentration has several dimensions:
- Issuer concentration: the largest five or ten positions may determine most daily performance.
- Country concentration: a portfolio dominated by one manufacturing or battery hub inherits that jurisdiction’s currency, tax, trade and political risks.
- Subsector concentration: miners, cell makers, charging firms and vehicle manufacturers react differently to the same event.
- Factor concentration: unprofitable growth companies can move together when interest rates or risk appetite change.
Check the top-10 weight, the number of holdings, position caps and rebalancing schedule. A fund that appears to own 60 companies may still be economically concentrated if the largest positions account for most assets or if many holdings depend on the same battery customer.

How to compare two funds before buying
Use the prospectus, latest holdings file and index methodology for both funds. Compare the dimensions below rather than choosing on the basis of ticker names or recent performance.
| What to compare | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Holdings breadth and top-10 weight | How many positions are there, and what percentage is in the largest ten? | Shows whether one company or a small cluster can dominate returns. |
| Pure-play share | What portion is dedicated EV companies versus diversified automakers and suppliers? | Separates direct adoption risk from broader automotive-cycle risk. |
| Value-chain mix | How much is in miners, batteries, charging, software and autonomous driving? | Reveals exposure to different earnings drivers and failure points. |
| Geography and currency | Which countries supply revenue, factories and listings? Is currency hedged? | Identifies trade, political, emerging-market and foreign-exchange exposure. |
| Index or active rules | What revenue threshold qualifies a company, and how often are holdings rebalanced? | Rules determine whether firms with only minor EV activity enter the portfolio; manager discretion adds selection risk. |
| Costs, turnover and trading | What are the expense ratio, portfolio turnover, bid-ask spread, average volume and tracking difference? | Fees and trading friction reduce returns, while turnover can raise transaction costs and tax consequences. |
| Non-EV businesses | Do issuers earn substantial revenue from unrelated sectors? | Those businesses bring additional risks and may dilute the intended EV exposure. |
A practical pre-investment process
- Read current documents. Download the latest prospectus, shareholder report and complete holdings file. Confirm the fund’s domicile, distribution policy, currency and permitted derivatives.
- Map concentration. Calculate issuer, country and subsector weights. Note whether several companies share a supplier, customer, factory region or government incentive.
- Verify the revenue connection. For each major holding, check how much revenue or operating profit is actually linked to EVs, batteries or charging. Do not assume that an “automotive innovation” label means pure EV exposure.
- Stress-test assumptions. Consider slower adoption, a 20% decline in a major holding, higher interest rates, lower lithium prices followed by a shortage, new tariffs and the removal of a purchase incentive. The exercise is to identify vulnerabilities, not to predict a precise return.
- Review financial resilience. For manufacturers and suppliers, inspect cash balances, debt maturities, capital-expenditure commitments and the number of products under development. For miners, consider project stage and cost position; for software firms, look at recurring revenue and funding needs.
- Check implementation costs. Compare the expense ratio, turnover, spread, trading volume and tracking difference with alternatives. A low headline fee does not guarantee low total cost if the portfolio is illiquid or frequently rebalanced.
- Set a portfolio limit. Decide in advance what percentage of your assets can be exposed to one theme and what loss you could tolerate without selling under stress. Keep emergency savings and broad diversification separate from this decision.
Who should be cautious
Extra caution is appropriate for investors who need the money soon, cannot tolerate large drawdowns, depend on stable dividends or already own substantial automotive, semiconductor, mining or technology shares. A fund can be diversified internally yet still duplicate risks elsewhere in a portfolio. Investors using margin face the possibility of forced selling after a sharp decline.
Thematic exposure may be more suitable as a limited satellite allocation for someone who understands the underlying businesses and can hold through multi-year cycles. It is not a substitute for a diversified core portfolio, and a broad-market fund may provide EV participation without making one technology theme the central risk.
Bottom line: treat EV funds as concentrated, policy-sensitive equity exposure
EV and new-age automotive funds can participate in long-term electrification, but the path is not guaranteed or smooth. The most important risks are uncertain adoption, intense competition, the cyclical auto market, concentrated battery and mineral supply chains, changing subsidies and trade rules, rapid technology replacement, cybersecurity and high portfolio concentration. Before buying, match the fund’s actual holdings to your tolerance for volatility and permanent loss, test how policy and commodity changes could affect it, and verify that the costs and liquidity are acceptable.
