What Are the New Humblewood Species in Beyond the Canopy? Six Races Explained

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Humblewood: Beyond the Canopy introduces six new playable animal-inspired races: Arma Hedges, Caprans, Elurans, Mustels, Rockburrow Jerbeen, and Seetas. Hit Point Press also advertises two additional subraces, but the official campaign material available for this overview does not name those subraces or provide their complete rules.

That distinction matters. The announcement establishes six new races plus two subraces—not eight new races. The descriptions below identify the published concepts and animal analogues without treating flavor copy as a substitute for the species’ full traits.

The six new playable races at a glance

Hit Point Press presents the following six races as new player options in Humblewood: Beyond the Canopy. The publisher’s campaign page gives each one an animal inspiration and a short thematic description. It does not, on the retrieved page, publish the complete rules for ability scores, size, speed, proficiencies, special actions, or other character mechanics.

Race Animal inspiration Publisher’s published characterization What is established here
Arma Hedges Pangolin-like Armored plates Visual and thematic identity; complete traits require the book
Caprans Goat-like Goat-inspired people Animal analogue; complete traits require the book
Elurans Cat-like Associated with magic and grace Theme and flavor; complete traits require the book

Rockburrow Jerbeen Chinchilla-like Helpful to friends Concept and social tone; complete traits require the book
Seetas Parrot-like Talent for mimicry Concept and flavor; complete traits require the book

These are the names to look for when creating a character or checking whether a summary of the expansion is counting its contents correctly.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Arma Hedges: pangolin-inspired and plate-armored

Arma Hedges are described as pangolin-like, with armored plates. That gives the race a clear silhouette and a natural place in Humblewood’s animal-hero setting: a character whose appearance immediately communicates protection, resilience, or a connection to a hard-shelled woodland creature.

The published description does not say how the plates function in play. “Armored” may be an evocative visual label rather than a statement about armor class, damage reduction, a reaction, or any other specific rule. Until the sourcebook’s ancestry entry is consulted, do not assign a defensive bonus, assume an armor restriction, or treat the plates as equipment. The reliable information is the pangolin-like design and plated appearance.

Caprans: goat-like explorers

Caprans are the goat-like addition to the lineup. The campaign description supplies the animal analogue but does not attach a named mechanical feature to it in the material available here. A player can therefore use “Capran” as a strong visual and cultural starting point while leaving the character’s exact capabilities to the published rules.

Goat imagery can suggest many different character concepts—mountain travelers, stubborn survivors, pastoral communities, or sure-footed climbers—but those are roleplaying directions, not confirmed statistics. The retrieved announcement does not establish a climbing speed, horn attack, resistance, ability-score adjustment, or terrain benefit. Those details should be taken from the book rather than inferred from the animal comparison.

Elurans: cat-like characters linked with magic and grace

Elurans are described as cat-like and associated with magic and grace. This is the most explicitly tonal description in the announcement: it points toward an elegant, arcane, or refined identity without specifying a class, spell list, or numerical bonus.

“Associated with magic” should not be read as confirmation that every Eluran can cast a spell. The official campaign copy does not identify a cantrip, innate spellcasting progression, advantage rule, or mandatory class choice. Likewise, “grace” does not establish a Dexterity increase, a movement feature, or an acrobatic proficiency. Those could exist in the final ancestry rules, but the short marketing description alone cannot prove them. Use the phrase as a roleplaying cue and verify mechanics in the species entry.

Mustels: badger- and weasel-like, with keen noses and nimble footwork

Mustels combine badger and weasel inspirations. Hit Point Press highlights keen noses and nimble footwork, giving this race a sensory and movement-oriented flavor. The pairing also distinguishes Mustels from a single-animal analogue: the description deliberately covers two related but different mustelid images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wording still does not define a rules package. A keen nose might be represented by a skill proficiency, an expanded sense, or only narrative description; nimble footwork might refer to movement, balance, or personality. None of those mechanics is established by the campaign page. Character builders should wait for the actual text before selecting equipment, feats, or classes on the assumption that a Mustel receives a particular detection or mobility benefit.

Rockburrow Jerbeen: chinchilla-like and community-minded

Rockburrow Jerbeen are described as chinchilla-like and helpful to friends. The name identifies them as a distinct option rather than simply another description of the original Jerbeen concept. Their published characterization emphasizes a small, burrowing-animal image and a cooperative social instinct.

“Helpful to friends” is a personality and setting cue, not a confirmed assistance mechanic. The retrieved page does not state whether Rockburrow Jerbeen can take a special Help action, grant bonuses to allies, burrow through rock, or use any particular size or movement rules. Those possibilities must not be treated as facts. The dependable takeaway is the chinchilla-like concept and the friendly, supportive tone attached to it.

Seetas: parrot-like mimics

Seetas are parrot-like and are said to have a talent for mimicry. That immediately supports characters built around voices, songs, repeated phrases, visual color, or social performance. It also gives a campaign a simple story hook: a Seeta may be recognized for reproducing sounds or adopting mannerisms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The announcement does not say what “mimicry” means mechanically. It may be a purely narrative capability, or the full entry may define limits, checks, languages, sound reproduction, or another feature. Do not assume that a Seeta can perfectly copy any voice, imitate magic, communicate in every language, or gain an automatic Deception bonus unless the sourcebook explicitly says so.

Six races plus two subraces—not eight races

Hit Point Press’s campaign page separates the headline numbers: six new playable races and two new subraces. A subrace is an additional category within the product’s character options, not another full race in the count of six.

The retrieved campaign text does not name the two subraces or describe their traits. Consequently, a responsible summary can report their existence but cannot provide names, ancestry pairings, ability adjustments, special features, or guidance on which race each modifies. Any article or character guide that lists eight named new races is using a different counting method or adding information not established by the cited announcement.

What the announcement does—and does not—tell you about mechanics

The official descriptions are useful for identity and setting tone, but they are not complete rules entries. The available material does not establish:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ability-score increases or other ability adjustments.
  • Creature size, walking speed, climbing speed, burrowing speed, or alternate movement.
  • Languages, proficiencies, resistances, damage immunities, or senses.
  • Natural attacks, armor interactions, reactions, bonus actions, or once-per-rest abilities.
  • Innate spellcasting, cantrips, spell lists, or level-based upgrades.
  • Age, lifespan, alignment guidance, population details, or subrace pairings.

That limitation affects how the options can be compared. The evidence supports a thematic comparison—plates, goat imagery, feline magic and grace, mustelid senses and movement, chinchilla-like helpfulness, and parrot-like mimicry—but not a ranking of combat efficiency, exploration utility, or class compatibility. Such a ranking requires the full sourcebook text.

Where these races fit in Beyond the Canopy

Humblewood: Beyond the Canopy is presented as a substantial campaign expansion rather than a species-only supplement. Hit Point Press describes a book of more than 250 pages containing setting material, playable races, a bestiary, and an adventure. The product page also lists more than 40 monsters and non-player characters and identifies the adventure as suitable for characters from level 5 through level 8.

The campaign page frames the player options as part of a wider package: in addition to the six races and two subraces, it advertises one class with three subclasses and three additional subclasses. Those options may shape how the new ancestries fit into a campaign, but the retrieved descriptions do not assign any race to a particular class or subclass. Treat the expansion as a complete setting toolkit, not as a promise that one of these races is designed for a single build.

2014 and 2024 rules support

Hit Point Press’s product page says the PDF is compatible with D&D 5e 2014. The official campaign page also describes support for both the 2014 and 2024 rules and says that a conversion PDF is provided for 2024 rules. These statements describe product compatibility, not identical wording across both rules versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your group uses the 2014 rules, start with the ancestry text in the main book and follow its terminology. If your group uses the 2024 rules, use the supplied conversion material rather than rewriting traits from the animal descriptions. Confirm which version your Dungeon Master is using before character creation, because a conversion document can change how species traits are presented even when the concept and name remain the same.

How to choose one before you have the complete rules

You can make a provisional character concept from the published descriptions without pretending to know unverified mechanics. Use this process:

  1. Choose the visual idea. Decide whether the character’s identity starts with pangolin plates, goat features, feline elegance, mustelid senses, chinchilla-like community, or parrot-like mimicry.
  2. Write a non-mechanical character hook. For example, describe why a Seeta became a performer or why a Rockburrow Jerbeen prioritizes helping companions. Keep the hook independent of an assumed bonus or special action.
  3. Select a class only after checking the ancestry entry. The campaign copy does not establish which race supports a particular class, spellcaster role, weapon style, or exploration niche.
  4. Verify the exact rules version. Use the 2014 presentation for a 2014 campaign or the publisher’s conversion PDF for a 2024 campaign.
  5. Record the sourcebook wording on the character sheet. Copy the actual trait names, uses, ranges, action types, and limitations once you have access to the book.

This approach lets the flavor guide the concept while preventing a common session-zero problem: building around a feature that turns out not to exist or works differently under the selected rules version.

What to verify in the book before play

Before finalizing any of the six options, check the relevant ancestry entry for the following information:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether the name is written as a race, species, ancestry, or a race-plus-subrace combination in your edition.
  • Size, speed, senses, languages, and any movement modes.
  • Every passive trait and every action, bonus action, reaction, or free-use ability.
  • Usage limits, recharge conditions, saving-throw DCs, proficiency bonuses, and level prerequisites.
  • Whether a feature works only in specific environments or with a particular equipment type.
  • How the 2024 conversion changes terminology, timing, or numerical values.
  • The names and prerequisites of the two subraces.

Keeping these checks separate from the marketing descriptions is especially important for traits suggested by words such as “armored,” “magic,” “keen,” “nimble,” “helpful,” and “mimicry.” Those words communicate fantasy identity; only the rules entry determines what a character can actually do.

Is Beyond the Canopy a book or a PDF?

The publisher offers a digital PDF and a bundle through its official store collection, and the campaign page refers to physical pledge options. The product page identifies the PDF as the Humblewood Beyond the Canopy: Campaign Setting Book – 5e D&D. The available information does not verify a particular retail edition, an Amazon listing, or a third-party fulfillment arrangement, so check the publisher’s current product page for the edition and format you need.

For a group that only needs the ancestry rules, the PDF may be the most direct way to search the entries and copy traits into character sheets. Groups planning a full Humblewood campaign may prefer the larger setting book because the same product is advertised as containing setting information, the bestiary, non-player characters, and the level 5–8 adventure.

Why the distinction between flavor and rules improves character creation

Animal analogues are valuable because they make a new ancestry legible immediately. A player can picture a plated Arma Hedge, a graceful Eluran, or a mimicking Seeta before reading a single statistic. They also help a Game Master signal the tone of a settlement or introduce a character in one sentence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

But analogues can create false expectations when readers import abilities from other fantasy games or from real animals. Pangolin plates do not automatically equal armor; a goat comparison does not automatically grant a climb; a cat-like identity does not automatically grant darkvision; a parrot-like identity does not automatically reproduce every sound. Keeping those assumptions out of the first draft of a character sheet makes the eventual rules check faster and avoids disputes at the table.

Bottom line

Humblewood: Beyond the Canopy adds six announced playable races—Arma Hedges, Caprans, Elurans, Mustels, Rockburrow Jerbeen, and Seetas—plus two subraces that the available campaign description does not name. The publisher establishes their animal inspirations and broad flavor, while the complete mechanical differences remain in the sourcebook and its 2024 conversion material. Use the descriptions to choose a character concept, then verify every playable trait in the edition your group is using.
