A computer’s main components have distinct jobs: the processor executes instructions, RAM holds data in active use, and storage keeps files and applications for the long term. The motherboard connects internal parts; graphics hardware processes images; the power supply delivers electricity; and cooling helps manage heat. A keyboard, mouse, and monitor let you interact with the system. Not every computer has these parts as separate, replaceable pieces: laptops and compact computers may combine or solder components.
What are the main components of a computer?
In a desktop PC, the core internal components are usually the CPU, RAM, storage, motherboard, power supply, cooling hardware, and case. A computer may also use a separate graphics card, though some systems handle graphics with a processor’s integrated graphics. External devices such as a monitor and keyboard are essential to a typical setup, but they are not inside the computer case.

CPU: executes instructions
The central processing unit (CPU), also called the processor, executes program instructions and performs calculations. It works with RAM to access the data that active programs need. Calling the CPU the computer’s “brain” can be a useful shorthand, but its specific job is processing instructions—not storing all the computer’s information.

RAM: holds data in active use
Random-access memory (RAM) is short-term working memory. It gives the computer quick access to information that programs are currently using. RAM is not a substitute for storage: its role is to support active tasks, while a drive keeps files and applications for longer-term use. The amount of RAM that makes sense depends on the work you do.

Storage: keeps files and applications
An SSD or hard disk drive (HDD) stores files, applications, and other data over the long term. This is where information remains available after you close a program or turn off the computer. RAM and storage both hold data, but serve different purposes: RAM supports work in progress, while storage retains data for later.
Motherboard: connects the components
The motherboard is the main circuit board. It connects the processor, memory, storage, and expansion cards, and provides routes for power and communication between them. Its sockets, supported memory and storage, expansion slots, and physical size all affect which components can work together. Some compact computers have a processor soldered to the board instead of a socketed CPU.

GPU: processes graphics
A graphics processing unit (GPU) handles graphics work. It may be integrated into the computer’s processor, or it may be part of a separate graphics card installed in a motherboard expansion slot. A dedicated card can be relevant for demanding graphics workloads and gaming, but it is not required for every computer or user.

The power supply unit (PSU) provides electricity to the installed components. Its capacity and connectors must suit the parts in the system. If a build includes a separate graphics card, check that the PSU has the power connections that card requires.

- 122 in 1 Precision Screwdriver Set: This precision screwdriver set contains 101 precision bits and 21 auxiliary tools—screwdriver handle, flexible shaft, extension rod, magnetizer, magnetic mat, spudgers, and more. It handles PC maintenance—RAM upgrades, SSD swaps, PC assembly—while also tackling teardowns and repairs of PS4, Xbox, other game consoles, drones, smartphones, tablets (battery and screen replacements), and other electronics. Rare and specialty bits are included for servicing specialized devices.
- Maximize Repair Efficiency: Engineered for efficient repairs, the handle is ergonomically designed and non-slip, fitting comfortably in your hand and spinning smoothly. A 4.56-inch alloy-steel extension shaft offers high hardness and resists bending, while the spring-constructed flexible shaft flexes up to 180° to reach and turn tiny screws deep inside a chassis with ease.
- Dual-Magnet Design: The kit includes two magnetic tools. A magnetizer boosts bit magnetism to pick up screws, and a magnetic mat holds and organizes every tiny screw you remove. Used together, they slash the risk of loss or mix-ups, keeping every teardown and reassembly neat and orderly.
- Quality First: The bits are forged from Cr-V steel and heat-treated to 60 HRC for exceptional hardness, strength, and deformation resistance—ideal for long-term electronic repairs. Spare bits in the most common sizes are also included, so a lost tip never leaves you short, keeping the kit fully functional and extending its service life.
- Compact Storage: Every component is neatly labeled and organized in the case—ready for home, office, or on-the-go use. This all-in-one kit saves money and eliminates service appointments. It’s the perfect household essential and an ideal gift for husbands, dads, sons, or friends who love electronics repair and DIY projects.
Cooling: helps remove heat
Fans and other cooling hardware move heat away from components. The cooling needs of a system depend on the processor, case, and workload; one cooling setup is not automatically right for every computer.
Case: holds the internal parts
The case supports and protects internal components. Its dimensions and layout determine whether parts fit and can affect how much room is available for future hardware. The motherboard’s form factor and the size of a graphics card or other components are among the fit considerations.

Peripherals: provide input and output
A keyboard and mouse are common input devices; a monitor displays output. Printers and other devices can also connect to a computer. These external peripherals help make a computer usable, but are separate from its internal components.
How do the parts work together?
When you use an application, its instructions and working data are available to the processor through RAM. The CPU executes those instructions and performs calculations. Storage retains the application and its files for future use. The motherboard connects the components, the GPU processes graphics when present, the PSU supplies power, and cooling helps manage heat. Input devices provide commands, and output devices such as a monitor show results. This is a beginner-level model, not a complete description of computer architecture.

What is the difference between RAM and a processor?
The processor does the work of executing instructions; RAM holds working data the processor needs to access quickly. They work together, but they are not interchangeable. More RAM does not turn into a faster processor, and a faster processor does not replace the need for enough working memory for your tasks.
How should you compare computer components?
Start with what you want the computer to do. Basic work, gaming, and content creation can place different demands on a system, so there is no single best specification for everyone. For example, Intel’s build guide recommends 16 GB of RAM in the context of modern gaming; that is gaming-specific guidance, not a universal minimum for all computers. The guide’s retrieved page does not state a publication year.
Quick Recap
- Purpose: Identify the tasks the computer needs to handle, including whether you will run demanding graphics applications or games.
- Compatibility: Check that the processor matches the motherboard socket, that the board supports the chosen memory and storage, and that expansion cards are supported.
- Performance and capacity: Match each part to the workload instead of choosing a specification in isolation.
- Physical fit and upgrades: Confirm that components fit the case and that the board and case leave the expansion options you want.
- Power and cooling: Check that the PSU has the required capacity and connectors, and consider cooling in relation to the processor, case, and workload.
- Balance: Consider the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, PSU, and motherboard as a system. A mismatch elsewhere can limit the practical value of a powerful component.
What should a beginner remember?
- The CPU executes instructions; RAM holds working data for active tasks.
- RAM is not long-term storage.
- The motherboard connects parts and sets important compatibility limits.
- A separate graphics card is useful for some workloads, but not every computer needs one.
- Power, cooling, and physical fit matter alongside performance.
