Sand batteries store energy as heat, not as electricity ready to send back to the grid. That makes them a better fit for sites with a reliable use for stored heat—such as district-heating networks or industrial processes—than for projects whose main goal is to return electricity. Electricity generation is possible in principle, but it requires extra equipment and has shown substantially lower electrical round-trip efficiency in the available sand-based prototype results.
What a sand battery stores—and what it delivers
A sand battery is a form of thermal energy storage: electricity heats sand, sand-like material or industrial by-products, and the system holds that energy as heat. The commercial systems documented by Polar Night Energy are designed primarily to supply heat. Its product information describes hot water, steam or hot air at temperatures up to 400°C, for uses such as district heating and industrial processes.

This distinction matters when assessing grid-scale storage. A system that stores heat and later delivers useful heat is not equivalent to one that stores electricity and returns electricity. Thermal efficiency, electricity round-trip efficiency, and combined heat-and-power efficiency describe different outcomes and should not be compared as if they were the same measure.
The main limitations for grid-scale use
1. The site needs a useful heat customer
The strongest use case is near a heat network or facility able to use the system’s output at the required temperature. Without a suitable customer, stored heat may have little practical value; converting it back to electricity is a separate process with its own equipment and efficiency losses. Siting therefore depends on heat demand and integration, not just on the availability of a place to store energy.

Polar Night Energy says around 36% of industrial process heat falls within the temperature range its systems can serve. That is the company’s claim; the cited product information does not identify an underlying study for the figure, so it should not be treated as an independently verified measure of the addressable industrial market.
2. Returning electricity requires another conversion stage
To recover electricity, a sand-based store needs equipment that converts heat into power. Polar Night Energy describes its power-to-heat-to-power (P2H2P) system as under development, with further work needed on storage design, components, operating temperature and materials. Its December 10, 2024 estimate for a planned configuration was 30–35% electricity-generation efficiency. The company also estimated up to 90% overall efficiency if the remaining heat is put to use. Those are estimates for a developing configuration, not reported results from a commercial electricity-storage installation.

The high combined figure depends on having a customer for the residual heat. It does not mean that 90% of the electricity put into storage comes back as electricity.
3. Prototype electricity results are not commercial performance figures
A 2026 Journal of Energy Storage study by Tetteh, Pallonen, Rehman, Järvinen, Toldy and Santasalo-Aarnio examined a 1 kWe sand-filled Stirling Carnot-battery prototype. Its experimental round-trip results were low; the larger figures in the study are optimized simulations, not measured operating results. Neither set should be presented as the performance of Polar Night Energy’s commercial heat-storage systems.

4. Commercial evidence is strongest for supplying heat
The Kankaanpää figures in the table are operator-reported. Polar Night Energy also says its Pornainen installation was commissioned in June 2025 and that district-heating climate emissions fell by 70% during the project’s first operating year. That reduction is a company-reported project outcome, not a general performance guarantee for sand batteries; results depend on the local heat system and what energy source the store displaces.
5. Project costs and materials are not settled by the available comparisons
The cited project information does not provide independently comparable capital costs, site-integration costs or lifecycle comparisons with batteries, pumped hydro or other thermal storage. Polar Night Energy says its systems can use sand-like materials and industrial by-products, but the cited information does not quantify material availability or lifecycle impacts. These sources therefore do not establish either a universal cost advantage or a general sand-supply constraint.

How to assess a proposed sand-battery project
Compare the service the project will actually provide, rather than treating all storage technologies as interchangeable. For a specific site, assess:

Count heat as useful output only when there is a customer able to use it.
- Heat quality: Check the required temperature and whether the system’s output can meet the process or network’s needs.
- Efficiency measure: Separate heat-storage performance, electricity returned per unit of electricity charged, and combined useful heat-and-power performance.
- Scale and duration: Match the proposed capacity and delivery rate to the site’s actual demand profile; a small laboratory prototype and a commercial heat installation answer different questions.
- Location and integration: Account for distance to heat users, network connections and the equipment needed to deliver the required output.
- Economics and maturity: Request project-specific capital and integration costs, comparable lifecycle assumptions, and operating evidence for the precise configuration being considered.
When the limitations matter most
Sand-based thermal storage is most compelling when a project can use stored heat directly and has a nearby, dependable heat demand. It is a weaker fit when the principal requirement is to return stored electricity to the grid, because that requires heat-to-power conversion and the available prototype results are not evidence of commercial-scale electrical performance. The case for any particular installation ultimately depends on its heat customer, integration requirements and project economics.
