What Are the Limits of AI Systems That Reconstruct Images From Brain Activity?

AI systems that reconstruct images from brain activity do not read a picture directly from the brain. They infer likely visual content from measurements—usually fMRI recorded while a person views an image—and then retrieve a candidate or ask a trained image generator to produce an approximation. The result may preserve a scene’s subject, layout or broad meaning while inventing colors, textures and fine details.

Current demonstrations are controlled, participant-specific experiments. They do not show reliable decoding of arbitrary thoughts, routine operation from an ordinary scan, or a system that works equally well on people it has never seen.

What an AI image reconstruction system actually does

The input is generally functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a measurement related to changes in blood oxygenation across many brain voxels. While a participant looks at images, the system pairs each brain pattern with the corresponding image or with a representation of that image produced by a pretrained vision model.

A decoder is then fitted to that person’s paired data. Given a new brain pattern, it predicts an image embedding, semantic representation or lower-level visual feature. A second system turns that prediction into an output image. In a retrieval design, the predicted representation is compared with representations of candidate images and the closest match is returned. In a generative design, the representation conditions a diffusion model that synthesizes a new image.

Brain-Diffuser illustrates the generative route: decoded multimodal features are passed to a latent diffusion model. MindEye separates retrieval and reconstruction into specialized modules, including a semantic pathway and a lower-level perceptual pathway. In both cases, the pixels are the end product of a learned inference chain—not a direct conversion of neural measurements into a photograph.

Inference, not a stored picture

The decoder, the training images, the pretrained vision representation and the image generator all influence the answer. If the neural data strongly indicate “a dog on a beach,” a generator can supply a plausible breed, fur texture, horizon and lighting from patterns it learned elsewhere. Those additions may be visually convincing even when the scan did not determine them.

This is why a reconstruction can be semantically right but visually wrong. It can identify the category or arrangement while guessing the exact color, object identity or background detail. A plausible image should therefore be read as a probability-weighted hypothesis, not as a frame recovered pixel for pixel.

Why fMRI places a hard ceiling on fidelity

fMRI is an indirect, spatially aggregated signal. It reflects blood-oxygenation changes that follow neural activity rather than recording every neuron’s firing at the moment it occurs. A single measured pattern contains information mixed across voxels, and the mapping from that pattern to a high-dimensional image is noisy and many-to-one.

Studies in this area contend with a domain gap between brain measurements and computer-vision features, limited signal-to-noise ratio, very high dimensionality and finite spatial resolution. These constraints are discussed in the 2020 NeuroImage literature on visual reconstruction: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neuroimage.2020.117602. A model can learn statistical regularities that reduce the apparent difficulty without recovering every visual fact represented in the original stimulus.

Timing is also important. The blood-oxygen signal changes more slowly than visual processing. Consequently, the measurement is well suited to estimating distributed patterns over a time window, but it is not a high-speed camera pointed at the visual cortex. A sharp output image can conceal that temporal and spatial averaging.

512 × 512 output does not mean 512 × 512 brain measurements

Takagi and Nishimoto reported 512 × 512 generated images in a CVPR 2023 latent-diffusion study. That number describes the output format. It does not mean that the experiment directly measured, or correctly recovered, 262,144 independent pixel values.

Diffusion models routinely create coherent detail from a compact conditioning signal. Their learned prior supplies edges, textures and lighting that are statistically compatible with the predicted representation. Increasing output resolution can make those details smoother and more persuasive while leaving the underlying uncertainty unchanged. When comparing demonstrations, treat image sharpness as a property of the generator, not as proof of neural measurement precision.

Retrieval and generation answer different questions

A system that selects the original image from a known collection has a different task from one that invents an image. Their scores and failure modes should not be combined.

Approach What the model receives What it returns Main strength Typical limitation
Image retrieval A brain-derived representation and a fixed candidate set The candidate judged most similar Can be evaluated by rank or whether the original appears near the top Performance depends on the candidate database; it may succeed by choosing among familiar alternatives
Generative reconstruction A brain-derived representation used to condition a generator A newly synthesized image Can depict scenes outside a fixed candidate list and combine semantic and perceptual cues Generator priors can hallucinate colors, objects and fine structure
Semantic decoding Features associated with objects, actions or scene meaning A category, caption-like representation or semantic image Often preserves what the scene is about May lose exact shape, texture, identity or spatial detail
Perceptual decoding Lower-level visual features such as structure or appearance An image emphasizing visual form Can preserve layout or coarse appearance May not identify the scene’s meaning reliably

A high retrieval rank is not equivalent to pixel similarity, and a human preference for one generated image is not equivalent to a correct reconstruction. Any headline number must be tied to its task, dataset and metric.

Participant-specific training is the rule, not a footnote

Neural responses vary across people because anatomy, functional organization, attention and strategy differ. A mapping fitted to one participant’s voxels generally cannot be applied unchanged to another participant’s measurements. MindEye’s authors explicitly state that their current models were not capable of across-subject decoding.

Participant-specific calibration also limits what “works on anyone” means. The person typically needs many paired examples of brain activity and viewed images so the decoder can learn that individual’s measurement space. A model that performs well after this training has demonstrated personalization, not universal mind reading.

Even for the same participant, attention, fatigue, medication, mood and neurological status can alter the measured pattern. The MindEye paper identifies mental state and neurological condition as potential sources of systematic distortion. A reconstruction failure may therefore reflect a changed recording context rather than a complete absence of visual information.

Seeing an image and imagining one are separate problems

Most prominent demonstrations involve a participant looking at an external image. The brain is then processing a stimulus whose timing and content are controlled by the experimenter. Internally generated imagery lacks that external anchor and can be weaker, less stable or more idiosyncratic.

Koide-Majima and colleagues, writing in Neural Networks in February 2024, describe imagery externalization as challenging. Earlier imagery studies could visualize only constrained domains such as faces or alphabetic letters. Those results should not be generalized to arbitrary imagined scenes.

Evaluation on the NSD-Imagery dataset makes the distinction measurable: performance on seen images was a poor predictor of performance on mental imagery, and strong performance in one task did not guarantee strong performance in the other. A system advertised as reconstructing “what you imagine” must therefore be evaluated with imagery trials, not inferred from its results on viewed pictures.

What accuracy metrics do—and do not—tell you

There is no single accuracy scale for brain-to-image reconstruction. Different metrics answer different questions.

Metric or test Question it addresses What it does not establish
Semantic or category agreement Does the output contain the same broad subject or scene type? That the exact object, color or identity was recovered
Retrieval rank How high does the matching image appear among candidates? How the system would perform without that candidate set
Low-level visual similarity Do structure, edges or coarse appearance resemble the target? That the scene’s meaning or identity is correct
Human judgments Do observers prefer or recognize the reconstruction? That observers are not being persuaded by a coherent but invented detail
Cross-subject transfer Can a decoder trained on one person work on another? That it will work in everyday settings or without calibration

MindEye reports strong retrieval results in its Natural Scenes Dataset evaluation. Those findings apply to that task and dataset; they are not a universal percentage for reconstructing any image from any person. A responsible report names the participant count, training design, stimulus set, metric and comparison baseline alongside the score.

Generalization fails along several different axes

New images

A decoder can learn recurring visual statistics in its training set. Performance on novel scenes tests whether it has learned a transferable mapping rather than memorized a narrow collection. A result obtained from images similar to the training examples should not be presented as performance on arbitrary photographs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

New people

As the across-subject limitation shows, a model can require individual calibration. Shared anatomical alignment or a common representation may improve transfer, but the cited demonstrations do not establish reliable, unrestricted operation across people.

New mental states

Looking, remembering and imagining are not interchangeable conditions. A model trained on viewing trials cannot automatically be assumed to decode a memory or an intention. The task must be specified and tested directly.

Real-world acquisition

Laboratory fMRI experiments use controlled stimuli, scanner protocols and preprocessing. Motion, missing data and changes in attention can degrade the learned mapping. Nothing in the cited work shows a portable system that reconstructs arbitrary thoughts from an ordinary, uncontrolled scan.

Can a brain scan show what someone is imagining?

In a narrow experimental sense, researchers have recovered limited information about internally generated content. The evidence is strongest when the imagery task is constrained, the participant is known to the decoder and the output is judged with an appropriate metric. The evidence is not strong enough to claim dependable reconstruction of any scene a person silently imagines.

“Mind reading” is therefore an overstatement. These systems need a measured brain signal, a trained mapping and a retrieval or generative model. They infer content that is statistically supported by those ingredients; they do not expose every private thought, hidden belief or arbitrary sentence on demand.

Why privacy still matters without demonstrated mind reading

Neural data can reveal information about perception and task performance even when a system cannot decode unrestricted thoughts. The risk is not only a perfect reconstruction. A model that infers whether someone saw a category, recognized a person or attended to a scene could still be sensitive.

Consent should cover collection, retention, secondary uses and model training. Researchers and institutions should document who controls the scans, whether raw data can be withdrawn, how participant-specific decoders are secured and which conclusions the model is not validated to make. Privacy safeguards should be based on measured capabilities, not on sensational claims of a general-purpose thought reader.

How to evaluate a new brain-image reconstruction claim

  1. Identify the signal. Check whether the system uses fMRI or another modality, and remember that the limits differ by measurement.
  2. Identify the task. Was the person viewing, remembering or imagining an image? Do not transfer results between these conditions.
  3. Check personalization. Ask how much data came from each participant and whether the decoder was tested on new people.
  4. Separate retrieval from generation. Determine whether the output was selected from candidates or synthesized by a model with its own visual prior.
  5. Read the metric. Look for semantic agreement, retrieval rank, low-level similarity or human judgment, and note the dataset and baseline.
  6. Inspect the uncertainty. Compare multiple reconstructions, confidence estimates and failure cases rather than viewing only the most attractive example.
  7. Test the claim’s scope. A controlled laboratory result should not be advertised as routine decoding of arbitrary thoughts.

What future progress would need to demonstrate

More convincing systems would need better transfer to new participants, tests on genuinely novel images, direct evaluation of imagery and memory, and uncertainty measures that expose when the generator is supplying detail. Improvements in acquisition, alignment and representation learning may help, but a sharper image alone would not solve the inference problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The field also needs standardized reporting. Papers should distinguish semantic content from visual detail, report participant-level variation, disclose the amount of calibration data and evaluate whether observers can detect hallucinated features. Recent work—including the 2024 PubMed-indexed retrieval studies and the 2026 PMC-indexed MIRAGE study—shows that the area remains active; it does not by itself establish a universal decoder.

The practical limit today

AI reconstruction from brain activity can recover useful, approximate information under carefully controlled conditions, especially about broad visual meaning and sometimes coarse structure. Its output is constrained by indirect fMRI measurements, participant-specific training and the priors of retrieval and generative models. It cannot currently be treated as exact visual recovery, reliable cross-person decoding or general-purpose access to private imagination.
