How the event began
Razzie co-founder John Wilson recalled to TIME in a January 14, 2015 background article that the first presentation grew out of an informal gathering after the Oscars broadcast. Wilson said: “I was looking for something to do when the show was over, because in L.A. they end by 10 p.m.” The anecdote explains the awards’ playful origin; it is a historical recollection, not a permanent procedural rule.
How are Razzie nominees chosen?
The basic system has two voting stages: a nominating ballot and a final ballot. Members first identify contenders for each category. After the organization announces the nominees, members vote again to determine the winners. Which categories do the Razzies use?
Category names are part of the satire and can be revised. The 45th-awards nominations announcement listed nine categories:
- Worst Picture
- Worst Actor
- Worst Actress
- Worst Supporting Actor

- Worst Screen Combo
- Worst Prequel/Remake/Rip-Off/Sequel

The labels are intentionally broader and more playful than many conventional awards categories. “Screen Combo,” for example, can focus the joke on a pairing rather than a single performance. The prequel/remake/rip-off/sequel category groups several kinds of follow-up or derivative projects under one satirical heading.
Categories can change by year
The 2020 announcement for the 40th awards referred to nine categories and described “Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property” as a new category for 2019. What does a Razzie nomination actually mean?

What is known—and not known—about the vote count?
The strongest public description for the 45th awards is the organization’s statement that “Results were determined by emailing ballots to 1,202 Razzie Members (movie buffs, film critics and journalists) from 49 US States and about two dozen foreign countries who chose five top contenders in each of nine categories.” That sentence establishes the electorate, delivery method, geographic description and number of selections.
It does not establish how ballots were verified, how incomplete ballots were treated, whether votes were weighted, who tabulated them, or whether an outside auditor reviewed the count. No public vote margin or exact total is supplied in that announcement. It would therefore be inaccurate to report that a nominee won by a particular number of votes or that the process has a publicly documented audit.
Has the organization ever corrected a nomination?
Yes. The official archive for the 43rd awards records a “Worst Actress Nominations Blunder” and lists the organization itself as the recipient of the Worst Actress award. The record follows a nomination that was rescinded and acknowledges the resulting mistake.
This is evidence that the process has faced criticism and that a correction has occurred. The available material does not establish a general appeals court, a permanent correction timetable or a comprehensive rulebook governing every future dispute. A correction in one year should not be treated as proof of a universal appeals procedure.

Common misconceptions about the Razzies
“The Razzies are the official worst-movie awards.”
They are an independent satirical award project, not an official industry authority. Their “worst” designation reflects the organization’s voting members and comic purpose.
“A critics’ committee chooses all the nominees.”
The published 45th-awards description says emailed ballots went to members identified as movie buffs, film critics and journalists. It does not say that a separate critics’ committee, guild or industry panel made the selections.
“The 1,202-member figure applies every year.”
It applies to the 45th-awards announcement. The 2020 announcement reported 1,090 members, demonstrating that the reported electorate can change.
