Smart plugs can make ordinary appliances easier to control, but they also add network, software, and support dependencies. The main drawbacks are reliance on Wi-Fi and apps, product-specific security and privacy risks, and the possibility that a plug will outlast its manufacturer’s support. How much each matters depends on the model and how you plan to use it.
1. Setup and control can depend on Wi-Fi, an app, and an account
A smart plug is not always a plug-and-use accessory: depending on the model, setup may require a home internet connection, a compatible smartphone or tablet, the manufacturer’s app, and an online account. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises consumers to check these kinds of requirements for smart devices, while a 2019 draft review by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) found that the plugs it examined used Wi-Fi and companion apps, with account credentials required during setup.

That creates extra points of dependence compared with a basic plug. You may need to keep the relevant app and account accessible, and your home network must meet the product’s requirements. Requirements differ by model, so read the manufacturer’s setup documentation before buying. These sources do not establish that every smart plug needs cloud access or that all models stop working when internet service is interrupted.
2. Security and privacy risks vary by product
Connecting an appliance to a network adds software and communications that need to be secured and maintained. NIST’s 2019 draft technical review reported security weaknesses in particular smart plugs it assessed. One example involved weak encryption and missing authentication that could allow an attacker to send commands; the report also described a firmware-related weakness. Those findings concern products examined at that time. They are not evidence that every smart plug is vulnerable or that current models share the same flaws.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission discusses unauthorized access, malware, and failed software updates as possible hazards of connected products generally. That broader warning is useful context, but it does not establish how often such problems affect smart plugs specifically.
Network controls can help limit the communications a connected device is allowed to make. NIST’s 2021 IoT practice guide describes Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD), a mechanism that can let a network permit only communications needed for a device’s intended function and block others when implemented. It is not safe to assume that a household router or a particular smart plug supports MUD; check the capabilities of the equipment you actually use.

3. A smart plug may outlast its support period
Smart-device software and security updates depend on the manufacturer continuing to support the product. The NCSC recommends checking the support period before purchase and warns that unsupported devices may become easier to hack or may stop working altogether. Support durations and update policies differ by manufacturer and model, so look for a published support end date and the company’s policy on updates.
The NCSC puts the practical point plainly: “Think of the support date as a ‘use by’ date for your device, so you’ll know how long it’s still safe to use.” A low purchase price or a successful initial setup does not tell you how long the device will receive support.

What to check before choosing a smart plug
- Network and control: Confirm the required Wi-Fi and internet setup, and whether local control is documented if that matters to you.
- App and account: Check whether setup or everyday use requires a manufacturer app, an account, a particular phone platform, or a smart-home ecosystem.
- Updates and support: Find the manufacturer’s update policy and support period for the exact model, including any stated end date.
- Electrical fit: Check the model’s official electrical rating and appliance-compatibility guidance for the appliance you intend to connect.
These are model-specific checks, not category-wide guarantees. NIST’s assessment is a historical review of a limited set of products, and general connected-device guidance cannot substitute for the current specifications and support terms of a particular plug.
