For the regular Unovan Zoroark, the best-supported Great and Ultra League moveset is Shadow Claw + Foul Play + Sludge Bomb. Shadow Claw reaches Foul Play’s 40-energy cost in five fast-move actions, while Sludge Bomb supplies valuable Poison coverage. Zoroark is not a top-ranked PvP Pokémon, however: its very low bulk is a larger problem than any single move choice.
The recommended Zoroark moveset at a glance
The Pokémon GO Hub PvP database lists the same moveset for both Great League and Ultra League:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Fast move: Shadow Claw
- Charged moves: Foul Play and Sludge Bomb
This recommendation applies to the standard Unovan Zoroark, not Hisuian Zoroark. It is the most defensible general-purpose set because it combines Zoroark’s best energy-producing practical fast move with a low-cost Dark attack and a second charged move that adds Poison coverage. It does not turn Zoroark into a consistently strong pick; the Pokémon GO Hub analysis says its frailty sharply limits what it can do in open Great and Ultra League play.

Why Shadow Claw is the default fast move
Zoroark has three fast-move options covered by the October 9, 2026 Pokémon GO Hub analysis. The important trade-off is not simply which move displays the larger damage number. It is how much immediate pressure the move creates and how quickly it supplies energy for Foul Play.
| Fast move | Type | Damage per turn | Energy per turn | Cooldown | Practical role |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sucker Punch | Dark | 4.0 | 3.5 | 1 turn | Higher fast-move damage, slower charge pacing |
| Shadow Claw | Ghost | 3.0 | 4.0 | 1 turn | Best general balance and quickest Foul Play timing |
| Snarl | Dark | 1.67 | 4.33 | 1.5 seconds | Highest listed energy generation, but very low fast-move damage |
Shadow Claw deals less fast-move damage than Sucker Punch, but its 4.0 energy-per-turn figure is higher than Sucker Punch’s 3.5. Because Foul Play costs 40 energy, Shadow Claw generates the required amount in five actions: five actions multiplied by 8 energy per action equals 40 energy. That timing is the central reason it is the standard recommendation.
Snarl generates 4.33 energy per turn in the cited analysis, but its 1.67 damage per turn is substantially lower than either one-turn alternative. The database’s recommended set uses Shadow Claw rather than Snarl, so Snarl is better treated as a specialist experiment than as the default answer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

What Sucker Punch does better
Sucker Punch has the higher listed fast-move damage: 4.0 damage per turn compared with Shadow Claw’s 3.0. That can create more direct pressure when a battle is decided by repeated fast-move damage, especially against an opponent that is not shielding or is already close to fainting. It is also a one-turn fast move, so its animation length is not the issue; the difference is damage per action versus energy gained per action.
What Shadow Claw does better
Shadow Claw reaches Foul Play sooner. In the cited calculations, five Shadow Claw actions produce 40 energy. Five Sucker Punch actions produce only 35 energy, so Sucker Punch needs a sixth action to exceed the 40-energy threshold. The analysis describes that difference as a delay of two PvP turns under its turn convention. In practical terms, it is one additional fast-move action before Foul Play becomes available.
That timing matters because Zoroark is fragile. A Pokémon that cannot safely absorb many attacks benefits from reaching its charged move before the opponent can force another decision, take a shield, or deliver a knockout. Shadow Claw therefore gives the more direct and repeatable Foul Play cycle even though each individual fast move hits less hard.

Why neither move fixes Zoroark’s core problem
The October 2026 analysis compared Shadow Claw and Sucker Punch in selected Great League simulations. Shadow Claw won some relevant matchups that Sucker Punch did not, while Sucker Punch produced some unique wins of its own. Those are outcomes for the article’s chosen matchup list and shield assumptions, not universal battle guarantees. The analysis concludes that the difference between the fast moves does not remove Zoroark’s structural bulk problem.
Use Shadow Claw when you want the database-supported general set and reliable Foul Play timing. Consider Sucker Punch when you specifically value higher fast-move damage, have access to the event move, and are willing to test whether its extra action changes a matchup on your team. Calling Sucker Punch an automatic upgrade would ignore its lower energy generation.
Charged moves: Foul Play and Sludge Bomb
| Charged move | Type | Damage | Energy | How it fits Zoroark |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Foul Play | Dark | 65 | 40 | Low-cost primary attack; pairs with Shadow Claw’s five-action timing |
| Night Shade | Ghost | 70 | 45 | Alternative Ghost damage at a higher energy cost |
| Sludge Bomb | Poison | 80 | 50 | Recommended second move; adds Poison coverage |
| Flamethrower | Fire | 90 | 55 | Coverage option for a specific team or matchup |
The move values above come from the October 9, 2026 Pokémon GO Hub PvP analysis. Foul Play is the essential charge move in the standard set because its 40-energy cost is the easiest for Shadow Claw to reach. Sludge Bomb costs 50 energy and deals 80 damage, giving Zoroark a way to threaten targets that do not respond to Dark damage in the same way.
Why Sludge Bomb is the usual second charged move
The database lists Sludge Bomb alongside Foul Play in both Great and Ultra League. Its Poison typing broadens the attacks an opponent must respect and prevents Zoroark from being locked into two moves that occupy the same Dark/Ghost offensive space. This is a coverage decision, not evidence that Sludge Bomb makes Zoroark bulky or broadly dominant.
When to consider Night Shade or Flamethrower
Night Shade is a 70-damage Ghost move costing 45 energy. It can be considered when a team specifically wants additional Ghost pressure, but it is not the database’s standard second move. Flamethrower deals 90 damage for 55 energy and can offer useful Fire coverage, according to the analysis. Its higher cost makes it more dependent on surviving long enough to reach the attack, which is difficult for Zoroark. Treat either move as a team- or matchup-dependent alternative rather than a universal replacement for Sludge Bomb.

For Great League, the Pokémon GO Hub snapshot places Zoroark at rank 797 out of 1,143 eligible Pokémon. Its listed build is level 21.5, 1,496 CP, using a 1/15/15 IV spread. The database’s recommended moves are Shadow Claw, Foul Play and Sludge Bomb.

A low rank does not mean the Pokémon is unusable in every battle. It means that, across the database’s rating framework, many other eligible Pokémon provide more reliable overall performance. Zoroark’s low defensive bulk makes it vulnerable to fast knockouts and limits how often it can reach a second or third charged move. A favorable typing interaction can still be overturned if Zoroark cannot survive the opponent’s neutral damage.
Great League move choice
Shadow Claw is the safest starting point for a Great League build because its five-action Foul Play timing gives Zoroark a chance to apply pressure before its low health becomes decisive. Sucker Punch can be tested when the extra fast-move damage aligns with a particular matchup, but the sixth-action requirement for the first Foul Play is a real cost.
Great League matchup expectations
The cited matchup comparison found that each fast move has wins the other does not under the selected simulation conditions. Do not convert those outcomes into a promise that one move always beats a named species. Shields, IVs, lead order, move timing and the exact opponent roster can change the result. Use the ranking as a warning about consistency, not as a ban on creative teams.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Ultra League: a higher CP cap does not solve the frailty issue
In the same database snapshot, Zoroark is ranked 628 of 841 eligible Pokémon in Ultra League. The suggested build reaches level 42 and 2,497 CP with a 1/15/15 IV spread. The recommended move combination remains Shadow Claw, Foul Play and Sludge Bomb.
Ultra League allows Zoroark to reach a higher level than Great League, but the analysis still describes it as unusually fragile. More CP does not automatically supply the defensive statistics needed to trade comfortably with the league’s established picks. Zoroark is therefore more dependent on alignment, shields and preserving energy than a sturdier generalist.
Using Zoroark in Ultra League
If you use it, build the team around situations in which Zoroark can enter with a favorable alignment or stored energy rather than expecting it to absorb repeated neutral attacks. Shadow Claw’s faster Foul Play access is especially valuable when a switch-in has only a short window to act. Sludge Bomb remains the database-supported second move; Flamethrower is a coverage experiment for a specific team plan, not a blanket improvement.

Master League: what is and is not established
The cited Pokémon GO Hub database snapshot provides no Master League ranking information for Zoroark. That absence should not be read as a precise numerical rank, nor as formal proof that Zoroark cannot be used in Master League. It simply means the reviewed database entry does not provide a Master League ranking to report.
Without a reported ranking or a supported Master League build in the supplied material, there is no evidence-based reason to present Zoroark as a recommended Master League investment. The Great and Ultra League recommendation should not be extrapolated to Master League as though it had been evaluated there.
Zoroark’s typing: useful resistances, dangerous weaknesses
Zoroark is a Dark-type Pokémon. The database type chart lists it as weak to Bug, Fairy and Fighting; resistant to Dark and Ghost; and double-resistant to Psychic.
| Interaction | Battle meaning |
|---|---|
| Weak to Bug | Bug attacks can punish a Zoroark switch-in quickly, especially because of its low bulk. |
| Weak to Fairy | Fairy pressure is a major risk and can make shielding decisions urgent. |
| Weak to Fighting | Fighting damage is dangerous even when Zoroark has energy ready. |
| Resists Dark | Dark attacks are less threatening than neutral damage, but resistance does not make Zoroark durable. |
| Resists Ghost | Ghost matchups can give Zoroark useful entry opportunities. |
| Double-resists Psychic | Psychic attacks are the most favorable listed defensive interaction. |
These type relationships explain why Zoroark can look attractive on paper into Psychic- or Ghost-oriented opponents. They do not erase its low defensive stats. Even a resistant matchup can become unfavorable if Zoroark is forced to take several neutral fast moves or a powerful coverage attack.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Community Day Sucker Punch availability
Sucker Punch was reported as the exclusive fast move for the October 2026 Community Day. The Pokémon GO Hub event guide states that evolving Zorua during the event or within four hours after it ended awarded a Zoroark with Sucker Punch.
That was a limited event window. With the cited information checked on October 13, 2026, you should not assume the window remains open or that the move is currently obtainable through ordinary evolution. The supplied material does not establish an Elite TM route or a future return date, so neither should be promised.
Best Value
If your Zoroark does not have Sucker Punch, Shadow Claw remains the general recommendation. Do not delay building a team solely because you missed the event move; the database-supported standard set does not require Sucker Punch.
How to choose the moveset for your team
- Confirm the form. Make sure you are evaluating regular Unovan Zoroark, the form covered by the cited database and analysis. Do not transfer the recommendation to Hisuian Zoroark without separate move information.
- Choose Shadow Claw first. It is the standard fast move because it generates 4.0 energy per turn and reaches Foul Play’s 40 energy in five actions.
- Use Foul Play as the first charged move. Its 40-energy cost gives Zoroark the quickest repeatable pressure in the recommended set.
- Add Sludge Bomb as the default second move. It costs 50 energy for 80 damage and provides Poison coverage, matching the database recommendation in both Great and Ultra League.
- Test Sucker Punch only for a defined reason. Select it when higher fast-move damage is more valuable to your team than the slower first Foul Play. Its 3.5 energy per turn means five actions produce 35 energy and a sixth action is needed to pass the threshold.
- Consider alternatives only around a matchup plan. Night Shade and Flamethrower have higher energy costs than Foul Play. Use them only when their Ghost or Fire coverage addresses a specific opponent or team gap.
- Check the league and CP. The database’s Great League example is level 21.5 at 1,496 CP; its Ultra League example is level 42 at 2,497 CP. These are suggested snapshot builds, not guarantees that every 1/15/15 specimen is optimal after future balance changes.
How to play the recommended set
Preserve Zoroark’s limited health
Zoroark should not be treated as a Pokémon that can repeatedly absorb neutral charged attacks. Because its bulk is the central limitation identified by the analysis, avoid unnecessary damage and use its energy timing to force decisions before it is trapped in a losing exchange.
Use Foul Play to create shield pressure
Shadow Claw’s five-action timing gives you a predictable route to a 40-energy move. That lets you threaten Foul Play without waiting for a long sequence of low-damage fast moves. The goal is not to win every shield scenario; it is to make the opponent respect an inexpensive Dark attack while you look for the right moment to reveal Sludge Bomb.
Keep Sludge Bomb as a coverage threat
Do not reveal the second charged move automatically. Sludge Bomb’s value comes from forcing an opponent to account for Poison damage rather than assuming every charged move is Foul Play. Because it costs 50 energy, plan the timing around whether Zoroark can survive the additional actions required.
Do not overread a favorable type matchup
Resistance to Psychic, Ghost or Dark attacks can create a good entry, but it does not guarantee a win. A switch that looks favorable on typing can still fail if the opponent has a neutral charged move, a fast-move advantage or a shield advantage. Zoroark’s role is therefore more tactical than self-sufficient.
Common mistakes when building Zoroark
- Calling Sucker Punch strictly better because its damage is higher. Its 4.0 damage per turn comes with only 3.5 energy per turn, compared with Shadow Claw’s 4.0 energy per turn.
- Ignoring the extra action. Five Sucker Punch actions leave Zoroark at 35 energy, not 40; the first Foul Play requires a sixth action.
- Assuming a high-damage charged move is automatically superior. Flamethrower’s 90 damage costs 55 energy, and Night Shade’s 70 damage costs 45. Zoroark may not survive long enough to exploit a slower move.
- Using the database rank as a battle guarantee. Ranks summarize a rating framework and snapshot meta; they do not replace matchup, shield or alignment analysis.
- Building for Master League from Great or Ultra League data. The supplied database entry gives no Master League ranking information.
- Assuming the Community Day move is still available. The reported evolution window was the event plus four hours. No current Elite TM route or return date is established here.
- Confusing regular and Hisuian Zoroark. The recommendation and numbers in this article concern regular Unovan Zoroark only.
Bottom-line recommendation
Build regular Zoroark with Shadow Claw, Foul Play and Sludge Bomb for the clearest Great and Ultra League answer supported by the October 2026 database snapshot. Shadow Claw’s higher energy generation reaches Foul Play one action sooner than Sucker Punch, while Sludge Bomb supplies the standard coverage option. Sucker Punch is worth testing if you obtained the October Community Day move and specifically want more fast-move damage, but it is not an unconditional upgrade. The decisive caveat is Zoroark’s low bulk: move selection can improve its timing and coverage, yet it cannot make the Pokémon a consistently strong general-purpose PvP choice.
