Sprites are small, season-specific helpers that you find during a Fortnite match and equip to gain a special Sprite Power. In the original Chapter 6 system, Air, Water and Earth Sprites supplied different battlefield utilities: mobility, healing or item-for-loot exchanges. Bringing a Sprite to a Sprite Shrine could also produce a Boon that stayed active as a gameplay benefit.
The system has since expanded. Fortnite Runners added Sprite extraction and a collection that can carry a Sprite’s power into later matches. Because Epic changes the mechanic between seasons and can disable it in competitive playlists, always check the active season and playlist before relying on a particular type, ability or shrine location.

How Sprites work in a Fortnite match
Epic Support describes Sprites as “little helpers on the battlefield.” The basic loop is:

- Equip it. Equipping the Sprite grants its associated Sprite Power. The effect depends on the type and season.
- Use the power or take it to a shrine. Some Sprites are thrown to trigger an effect, while an Earth Sprite accepts items. A Sprite can also be brought to a Sprite Shrine to revitalize it and award a Boon.
- Keep progressing through the match. Epic says Sprites can be leveled through exploration, eliminations and surviving the Storm.
If the player carrying a Sprite is eliminated before banking it, Epic says the Sprite can remain on the battlefield for another player to pick up. That makes a dropped Sprite a temporary objective rather than an item permanently tied to the eliminated player.

The original Air, Water and Earth Sprites
These three types were the foundation of the Chapter 6 Season 1 implementation. Their interactions were deliberately different, so “the Sprite” is not one universal ability.

Air Sprite: an updraft you can weaponize
Throwing an Air Sprite creates a vertical wind vortex. A player can use the updraft to gain height and redeploy a glider, while the same vortex can damage builds or launch vehicles. Its value is therefore not limited to escape: it can break an opponent’s structure, displace a vehicle or create a fast route over an obstacle.
Water Sprite: a local healing fountain
A thrown Water Sprite produces a fountain that restores health and shields to nearby players. The area effect makes it more useful when a squad can hold a position together than when a player is moving alone. Use it where teammates can remain inside the fountain’s area rather than throwing it while everyone is already rotating away.

Earth Sprite: trade items for a reward
Earth does not create a projectile effect. Feed it items and it exchanges those offerings for a reward. The decision is an inventory trade: surplus or low-value items become an opportunity for different loot, but the result is not described as a guaranteed specific weapon or rarity. Treat the exchange as a gamble unless the current season documents a more precise reward table.
Sprite Shrines and Sprite Boons
A Sprite Shrine is a separate destination for a Sprite. Bring a Sprite to the shrine to revitalize it and receive a Boon, a persistent gameplay effect listed by Epic for the Chapter 6 system. The shrine interaction is different from simply throwing Air or Water, or feeding Earth.

These Boon descriptions are tied to Epic’s documented implementation, not a promise that every season uses the same names or effects. If a shrine does not offer a listed Boon, the active patch may have changed the system.
Can a Sprite be kept for the next match?
In the original match-based system, a normally equipped Sprite is not a permanent inventory item. If you are eliminated before banking it, it can be left on the battlefield for another player. That behavior means the Sprite’s immediate value belongs to the current match.

Fortnite Runners introduced a different system. Epic’s June 5, 2026 Fortnite Runners article describes Sprites with new abilities spread across the island, including powers that can wrap players in shields, grant temporary invisibility or provide bonus burst damage. Players can find and extract a Sprite to add it to a collection and bring its power into future matches. Extraction and collection are therefore the answer when the question is whether a Sprite power can persist beyond one match; ordinary pickup-and-equip behavior should not be assumed to do that.
What changed in Fortnite Runners?
Runners treats Sprites as collectible powers as well as in-match helpers. The important distinction is between finding a Sprite during a run and successfully extracting it. A found Sprite may help immediately, but extraction is what adds it to the collection for later use.
New ability examples
- Shield-wrapping powers that protect the player temporarily.
- Temporary invisibility for a short tactical window.
- Bonus burst damage for an offensive push.
These examples illustrate the broader Runners design; they do not replace the original Air, Water and Earth descriptions in every Fortnite playlist. Epic’s current support notice says Sprites collected in Season 3: Runners are being immortalized in a “Sprite Garden” for Chapter 7 Season 4, confirming that the collection can be carried forward while its presentation and availability continue to change.

Where to find Sprites and Sprite Shrines
There is no permanent, season-independent coordinate list for Sprites or shrines. Spawn rules, names and points of interest can move with the island and patch. In a live match, use the active map and on-screen objectives to search the island for a Sprite, then look for a Sprite Shrine destination if you want a Boon.

- Pick up the Sprite and confirm which type or power it grants.
- Decide whether its immediate effect is more valuable than a shrine Boon.
- Choose a route that keeps the Sprite carrier with the squad; losing the carrier to an elimination can leave the Sprite behind.
- At the shrine, complete the interaction and verify the Boon in the HUD before leaving.
Guides that give exact shrine coordinates for one season can become inaccurate after an island update. Use them only when they identify the same chapter, season and patch as your match.
Are Sprites available in ranked or competitive Fortnite?
Epic Support states that Sprites are not available in competitive modes. That is the documented rule for the system, but Fortnite playlists and competitive regulations can change. A Sprite may appear in a public or special event playlist while being absent from ranked play.
Before planning a ranked strategy around a Boon or Sprite Power, check the current playlist description and patch notes. If the item does not spawn in the mode, there is no shrine route or inventory technique that can enable it.

How Sprite progression works
Epic says Sprites can be leveled through three kinds of play: exploration, getting eliminations and surviving the Storm. This gives the mechanic value beyond a single activation. A player who keeps moving, contributes to fights and survives late circles can progress a Sprite rather than treating it as a one-use pickup.
- Exploration: Continue covering the island instead of remaining in one safe location.
- Eliminations: The Sprite system recognizes combat progress, so carrying one can support an aggressive objective.
- Storm survival: Staying alive through Storm phases contributes to leveling, making rotations and timing important.
The exact levels, thresholds and rewards are season-specific and are not established as universal numbers. Read the in-game progress panel for the current implementation.
Sprites in Fortnite Creative
Creative has a configurable Earth Sprite device that creators can place on an island. Players exchange registered items, weapons or loot and receive rewards set by the island creator. This is not the same as the standard Battle Royale Earth Sprite loot table.
Creators can configure whether the device is enabled, its grant timer and its trade limit. Those settings determine when the device can be used and how often trades can occur. If an Earth Sprite behaves differently in a Creative island, check that island’s rules and device configuration before assuming the Battle Royale behavior is broken.

Expecting every Sprite to do the same thing
Air, Water and Earth have different activation methods. Check the type before throwing or feeding it; an Earth Sprite is for an exchange, while Air and Water are thrown to create their effects.
Assuming a Boon is the same as a Sprite Power
A Sprite Power comes from equipping a Sprite. A Boon comes from taking a Sprite to a shrine. They are separate stages and may have different effects.
Planning around an old season’s map
Sprite locations, shrine availability and abilities are seasonal. Confirm the chapter, season and playlist displayed in your game rather than relying on an old coordinate guide.
Assuming extraction happens automatically
In Runners, finding a Sprite and extracting it are distinct actions. Follow the mode’s extraction objective and confirm that the Sprite has entered your collection before leaving the run.
Trying to use Sprites in a competitive playlist
If the mode follows Epic’s stated competitive restriction, Sprites will not spawn. Switch to an eligible public or event playlist rather than searching indefinitely.

What to check before publishing or following a Sprite guide
- Identify the chapter, season and patch the guide describes.
- Confirm that Sprites are enabled in the exact playlist you are playing.
- Check whether the guide means an in-match Sprite Power, a shrine Boon or a Runners collection power.
- Verify current shrine locations in the live map; historical coordinates are not permanent.
- Read the current in-game description for any changed effect, level requirement or extraction condition.
The reliable core is simple: find and equip a Sprite for a special power, use its type-specific interaction, or carry it to a shrine for a Boon. Runners adds extraction and future-match collection, while competitive modes may exclude the system entirely.
