South Korea can source LNG from a range of suppliers beyond Alaska, including Australia, Qatar, Oman, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, Yemen, Egypt and the United States. It can also reduce the role of gas in electricity generation through nuclear power and renewables, supported by grid and storage investment. Those are different kinds of alternatives: one changes where Korea buys gas; the other can reduce how much gas it needs.
Where can South Korea buy LNG instead?
Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) says it imports LNG mainly from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Russia’s Sakhalin region, Australia and the United States. Its company overview names Qatar, Oman, Yemen and Egypt in the Middle East, and Indonesia and Malaysia in Southeast Asia. This is a documented supplier range, not a current ranking of volumes or a guarantee that any supplier has spare cargoes available.

- Australia: An established source in KOGAS’s overview. KOGAS also lists interests in the GLNG project and Prelude FLNG.
- Qatar: An established source and a KOGAS contracting partner. The Korean government announced a long-term KOGAS supply contract with QatarEnergy.
- Oman: Named by KOGAS as a source; KOGAS also lists an interest in Oman LNG.
- Indonesia and Malaysia: Both appear among KOGAS’s Southeast Asian sources. KOGAS lists an interest in Indonesia’s DSLNG project.
- Russia’s Sakhalin supply: Named by KOGAS, but the available evidence does not show that geopolitical conditions, sanctions, contract terms or supply availability would permit an unconstrained increase.
- Yemen and Egypt: Named in KOGAS’s list of Middle Eastern sources; KOGAS also lists a stake in Yemen LNG.
- The United States outside Alaska: KOGAS names the United States as a source and has used vessels carrying U.S. LNG. That supports U.S.-origin LNG as an existing source category, but does not establish availability of a particular Gulf Coast cargo or a future deal.
KOGAS also reports interests in LNG Canada and Mozambique Coral FLNG. Those investments show connections to projects, not that their output is available to replace a specific purchase or can be delivered to Korea on a particular schedule. The company’s resource development portfolio lists 18 projects across 10 countries at the end of 2025; project count is not a measure of LNG cargoes available to Korean buyers.

What do Korea’s contracts show?
Existing contracts illustrate that Korea can arrange supply through different producers and portfolio companies, with different start dates and durations. They do not identify an Alaska volume that needs replacing.

| Supplier or source | Documented arrangement | What the figure does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| QatarEnergy | KOGAS contract announced by the Republic of Korea government: 2 million tons per year from 2025 through 2044. | A long-term contract route with Qatar; it does not establish how much could substitute for a particular Alaska project. Government announcement. |
| TotalEnergies | Company announcement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission: 1 million tons per year over 10 years, starting at the end of 2027, after KOGAS selected the company in an international tender. | A separate contracting route with a later start date; it does not establish the cargo origin or make the volume an Alaska-specific replacement. SEC filing. |
| United States, national exports | The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported exports of 11.9 billion cubic feet per day in 2024. Australia and Qatar were the next two largest LNG exporters. | Evidence of global export scale, not Korea-specific availability, delivered price or an Alaska purchase commitment. EIA report. |
The U.S. International Trade Administration’s 2025 market summary describes Korean contracting with commodity traders and producers and forecasts potential U.S.-origin LNG volumes. Those are the agency’s projections at publication, not proof of final deliveries or a committed Alaska purchase. Read the market summary.
Can U.S. LNG from outside Alaska be an alternative?
Yes, in the broad sense that KOGAS identifies the United States as one of its LNG source countries and has received U.S.-carrying vessels. But a national export total cannot answer whether a specific cargo is available to Korea. Availability depends on the particular seller, contract, timing and delivery terms; the cited sources do not provide a comparable current account of those factors for Alaska and other U.S. supply.

The sources reviewed also do not establish a binding South Korean commitment to buy LNG from Alaska, or specify a volume or schedule. The title’s Alaska premise should therefore be read conditionally, not as evidence of an agreed purchase.
Could nuclear power and renewables replace LNG?
They can reduce gas’s role in electricity generation, but they are not LNG suppliers and do not replace a cargo one-for-one. Nuclear plants and renewable generation change the electricity mix; storage and grid capacity help manage when and where power is available.

South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy described a prospective mix in its announcement on the 11th Electricity Supply Basic Plan, including new nuclear plants, renewables, hydrogen and other zero-carbon sources, alongside grid and storage measures. The plan reflects policy direction; it does not show that every proposed resource is already operating or quantify how much LNG demand it will displace. Read the ministry announcement.

The figures above describe different things: contracted annual volumes, a national export rate, and a project portfolio. They cannot be added together as Korea’s available replacement supply. Nor do the cited sources provide a current, consistent comparison of supplier-by-supplier import shares, landed prices, spare capacity, shipping costs or contract flexibility. Without those data, it is not possible to rank alternatives by cost or say which source could replace a specific Alaska volume.
