They may be found in drinking water, food, some food packaging, nonstick cookware, treated fabrics and carpets, certain cosmetics, and household dust. But a product category’s association with PFAS does not mean every item contains them, and detecting PFAS does not by itself establish a person’s exposure level or health risk.
What are PFAS?
PFAS is short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. It refers to a diverse family of chemicals, not a single substance. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says PFAS have been used in industrial and consumer products since the 1940s because they can repel water and oil and resist heat. Many break down very slowly and can accumulate in people, animals, and the environment. PFOA and PFOS are among the best-studied members of the family. EPA overview of PFAS and risks

Different PFAS can have different properties and evidence about their effects. A finding about one substance should not automatically be applied to every chemical in the family.

Where can PFAS be found in everyday life?
PFAS can be present in the environment, some consumer products, and food or water. The examples below are possible sources, not a checklist of products that all contain PFAS.

| Source | Examples and context |
|---|---|
| Drinking water | Water can be affected by contamination from industrial or other sources. Local conditions matter. |
| Food | Food may be affected by environmental contamination, including fish from contaminated waters or dairy from exposed livestock. Detection is not guaranteed for every food item. |
| Food-contact products | Some food packaging has used grease-proofing substances; nonstick cookware coatings are another distinct food-contact use. |
| Treated fabrics and carpets | Some water-repellent clothing and stain-resistant fabrics or carpets may be associated with PFAS. |
| Personal-care and household products | Some cosmetics, cleaning products, paints, varnishes, sealants, and other products may contain PFAS. |
| Dust, air, and workplaces | PFAS can enter the environment through production and waste streams. People may encounter them in dust, air, or certain workplaces. |
These categories are described by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and EPA. Their presence in a category does not prove that a particular current product contains PFAS.
How can people be exposed, and what does detection mean?
Exposure can happen by eating or drinking contaminated food or water, breathing air or dust, or touching materials that contain PFAS. A detection in an item or sample is not, on its own, a measure of how much a person absorbed or whether it poses a meaningful health risk.

For PFOA and PFOS, ATSDR says research suggests exposure from current consumer products is generally lower than exposure from contaminated drinking water. That is a comparison for these studied chemicals and common exposure contexts—not a universal ranking for every PFAS or every person. ATSDR: PFAS exposure

What do FDA’s food and packaging findings show?
U.S. paper food packaging
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says PFAS-containing substances used as grease-proofing agents on paper and paperboard food packaging were no longer being sold into the U.S. market by February 2024. In January 2025, the agency said 35 related food-contact notifications were no longer effective after being abandoned. This addresses that particular grease-proofing use; it does not mean all PFAS uses or all food-contact applications ended. FDA: Authorized uses of PFAS in food-contact applications
Different food-contact uses have different evidence
FDA distinguishes paper packaging from nonstick cookware. Certain PFAS-containing substances have authorized food-contact uses, including nonstick cookware coatings. The agency says polymerized nonstick coatings are tightly bound to cookware and studies indicate negligible PFAS capable of migrating to food. By contrast, FDA identified potential migration and concern for the former paper and paperboard grease-proofing use.

Very sensitive testing may detect PFAS in packaging because of contamination or impurities. A total-fluorine result alone cannot establish that PFAS are present, because some methods cannot distinguish PFAS from other fluorine-containing substances.
FDA food and bottled-water samples
On its PFAS food Q&A page, FDA reports that PFAS were not detected above the method detection limit in 1,290 of 1,352 fresh and processed food samples tested through its ongoing Total Diet Study. FDA also detected PFAS in 10 of 197 bottled-water samples collected in 2023–2024; it said detected levels did not exceed EPA public drinking-water maximum contaminant levels if found in public water. These are results for the sampled products and methods, not proof that all food or bottled water is PFAS-free. FDA notes that uptake depends on factors including the PFAS type and the food type. What should you do if you are concerned about drinking water?
- Check local information. Consult your water provider’s information and your state environmental or health agency for information relevant to your location.
- Verify a filter’s specific claim. EPA advises checking a certifier’s product directory to confirm whether the exact home-filter model is certified to treat PFAS such as PFOA and PFOS. Do not assume a filter, pitcher, or replacement cartridge removes PFAS without verifying the model and treatment claim. EPA: Identifying drinking-water filters certified to reduce PFAS
