What Are Multiferroic Materials, and How Could They Enable Lower-Power Electronics?

Multiferroic materials combine two or more types of ferroic order in one material. For electronics, the most important class combines ferroelectric order, in which electric polarization can be switched, with magnetic order. When those orders are coupled, an electric field can influence a magnetic state and a magnetic state can influence polarization. That relationship is called magnetoelectric coupling.

The attraction is architectural: a device might write or control magnetic information with a voltage instead of relying mainly on a current or an applied magnetic field. That could reduce dissipation in particular memory, logic, sensing, and radio-frequency designs. It is a potential mechanism, not a guaranteed product-level energy saving. Coupling strength, operating temperature, switching reliability, readout, and integration into thin-film devices still determine whether a proposed circuit is practical. Current reviews describe active research concepts rather than a broad commercial replacement for conventional electronics.

What “multiferroic” means

Ferroic order in one material

A ferroic property has multiple stable states that can usually be switched by an external stimulus and that leave a remanent state after the stimulus is removed. Ferroelectricity refers to a switchable spontaneous electric polarization. Magnetic order refers to an organized arrangement of atomic magnetic moments; depending on the material, that order may be ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, or another magnetic structure. Other ferroic orders, such as ferroelasticity, involve a switchable spontaneous strain.

A multiferroic material has more than one ferroic order in the same phase. The electronics discussion usually centers on magnetoelectric multiferroics: materials that have both ferroelectric and magnetic order and in which the two are coupled. The words do not imply that every multiferroic has the same magnetic state, the same switching voltage, or even a strong enough interaction to be useful in a device.

The 2024 review by Xu, Yu, Wang, and Xiang surveys first-principles approaches to these materials, including effective Hamiltonians for magnets, ferroelectrics, and multiferroics; machine-learning potentials; spin-induced ferroelectricity; and calculation of the linear magnetoelectric coupling tensor. Those topics show why the field remains a materials-design problem as well as a device problem. Annual Review of Condensed Matter Physics (2024)

Why the distinction matters

“Multiferroic” describes coexistence of orders. “Magnetoelectric” describes the cross-effect between electric and magnetic variables. A material can be multiferroic but have weak or inconvenient coupling for a particular application. Conversely, useful magnetoelectric behavior can be studied in systems that do not meet every strict definition of a single-phase multiferroic. A credible device claim therefore has to specify the material, the coupling route, the temperature, the geometry, and the way states are written and read.

How magnetoelectric coupling links voltage and magnetism

The cross-effect

In an uncoupled ferroelectric, an electric field primarily changes polarization; in an uncoupled magnet, a magnetic field or current primarily changes magnetic order. Magnetoelectric coupling adds a cross-response: an electric field can alter a magnetic state, or a magnetic field can alter polarization. In a simple linear description, the response is represented by a magnetoelectric coupling tensor. Its size and allowed directions are set by the crystal’s symmetry, so rotating a crystal or changing its structure can change which components of the response are possible.

Maxim Mostovoy’s 2024 review emphasizes that crystals reach this cross-coupling through different mechanisms and that their symmetry and coupling constants are not universal. The review also connects those mechanisms with proposed memory and data-processing architectures. npj Spintronics (2024)

Routes from structure to magnetic state

At the microscopic level, the electric and magnetic subsystems can communicate through the lattice and the electronic structure. In some compounds, a change in spin arrangement creates an electric polarization; this is often described as spin-induced ferroelectricity. In others, ionic displacements, exchange interactions, spin–orbit effects, or strain provide the link between polarization and magnetic order. These are not interchangeable engineering recipes: each route has its own symmetry requirements, coupling scale, speed, temperature range, and fabrication implications.

Researchers use atomistic calculations and effective models to determine whether a proposed structure supports the desired order and how strongly the orders interact. First-principles calculations can estimate polarization, magnetic configurations, and coupling coefficients before a material is fabricated. The 2024 review also discusses low-dimensional forms and machine-learning potentials, reflecting the search for structures that are both strongly coupled and compatible with devices.

What a voltage-controlled magnetic operation would look like

Consider a magnetic element with two stable states representing data. A voltage applied across a ferroelectric or multiferroic layer changes its polarization. Through magnetoelectric coupling, that change can alter the preferred orientation or configuration of the magnetic layer. The voltage is then removed, leaving a remanent state that can be read by a magnetic or electrical sensor.

This description is a design principle, not a universal operating sequence. Some devices use a single multiferroic phase; others combine magnetostrictive, piezoelectric, magnetic, or nonvolatile layers so that strain or an interface transmits the electric-field effect. The practical switching path depends on the selected material and device stack.

Why this could reduce energy use

Replacing a current or magnetic field with an electric field

Electric-field control is attractive because charging a gate or capacitor can require little steady-state current, whereas driving a current through a resistive path produces Joule heating. Magnetic switching can also require current-carrying wires or field-generating structures. If a voltage can reliably change a magnetic state through magnetoelectric coupling, a circuit may avoid part of that current- or field-generation overhead.

That is the central low-power proposition behind multiferroic memory and logic: use the ferroelectric degree of freedom to control a magnetic degree of freedom, then preserve the state without continuous power. The same idea could let one physical element perform functions that otherwise need separate electrical and magnetic control paths.

Why “lower power” is not automatic

A voltage source still expends energy when it charges and discharges a device capacitance. The write operation may also involve losses in electrodes, leakage through an insulating layer, magnetic damping, or imperfect switching that requires repeated pulses. A read circuit can dominate the energy budget if it needs a large sensing current or a long integration time. Fabricating a multilayer stack may add parasitic capacitance and resistance that erase the advantage of the active material.

For those reasons, the available reviews do not establish a single energy-saving percentage or an apples-to-apples switching-energy comparison with a conventional device. “Can enable low-power electronics” should be read as a mechanism and an architectural opportunity. A real claim needs measured write energy, read energy, retention, error rate, speed, endurance, and the same test conditions for the reference technology.

Device directions under investigation

Nonvolatile memory

A multiferroic memory cell could store information in a remanent magnetic state while using a voltage pulse to write it. Nonvolatility means the stored state does not require a continuous refresh current, which is useful for standby power. The key questions are whether the two states are sufficiently distinct, whether switching is deterministic, and whether the state can survive the required number of cycles and the intended temperature range.

Logic and logic-memory combinations

Researchers also propose logic elements in which magnetic states represent inputs or outputs and electric fields provide control. Combining computation and storage in the same physical element could reduce data movement between a processor and separate memory. That benefit depends on having a reliable way to cascade devices, restore signal levels, and read a state without disturbing it. A material that switches well in an isolated experiment may still be unsuitable for a dense logic array.

Magnetic sensing

Magnetoelectric structures can convert magnetic stimuli into an electrical signal, or use an electric bias to tune magnetic sensitivity. This is relevant to field sensors and integrated sensing systems. Sensitivity alone is not enough: noise, bandwidth, temperature drift, calibration, and the energy consumed by signal conditioning determine whether a sensor is useful in a deployed system.

Micro- and nano-electromechanical systems

A 2024 review of magnetoelectric microelectromechanical and nanoelectromechanical systems discusses proposed functions including logic-memory, magnetic sensing, wireless power transfer, compact antennas, and radio-frequency or microwave electronics. These concepts exploit mechanical strain, magnetic response, electrical bias, or combinations of them in small structures. They remain application areas under investigation, not evidence that one single-phase multiferroic device is commercially mature or that every design saves energy.

Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering (2024) describes this broader device landscape and the integration questions that accompany it.

What determines whether a material is useful

Coupling strength and symmetry

A strong-looking ferroelectric and a strong-looking magnet are not automatically a strongly coupled multiferroic. The crystal symmetry must permit the relevant interaction, and the coupling must be large enough to switch the magnetic state at a practical electric field. A tensor response can be large in one direction and forbidden or weak in another, so device orientation and epitaxial strain may matter.

Temperature and stability

A laboratory effect observed only in a narrow temperature interval may not suit an electronic product. Designers need stable ferroelectric and magnetic order across the operating range, predictable behavior during thermal cycling, and retention after repeated write operations. The sources considered here do not provide a universal room-temperature ranking of material families.

Thin-film and circuit integration

Most practical electronics use patterned thin films, electrodes, interconnects, and insulating layers rather than isolated bulk crystals. A candidate material must therefore be deposited with the required composition and orientation, patterned without losing its ferroic properties, and joined to compatible layers. Interfaces can alter strain, leakage, magnetic anisotropy, and switching fields. Packaging and thermal budgets can impose additional constraints.

These are architecture-specific issues, so a material cannot be declared “the best multiferroic” without defining the application. The current reviews identify coupling and integration as continuing challenges and do not support a single readiness score across all material families.

How researchers design and evaluate new multiferroics

Start with symmetry and a target response

Material design begins by asking which electric and magnetic states are allowed by a crystal’s symmetry and which tensor components could connect them. The target might be voltage control of magnetization, a large magnetic-field-induced polarization, or a response that remains stable at a selected temperature. This prevents the common mistake of treating the word “multiferroic” as proof of a useful device response.

Calculate before fabricating

First-principles methods estimate candidate structures, magnetic configurations, polarization, and coupling. Effective Hamiltonians can model collective behavior over larger length and time scales than a direct atom-by-atom calculation. Machine-learning potentials are being explored to accelerate those simulations, especially for low-dimensional systems and complex energy landscapes. Predictions still need experimental verification because defects, interfaces, disorder, and fabrication conditions can change the observed behavior.

Measure the complete device stack

Material-level measurements should be followed by measurements on the patterned device: voltage and current waveforms, magnetic or electrical readout, switching distributions, retention, endurance, thermal dependence, and energy per successful operation. Reporting only a polarization loop or a magnetoelectric coefficient cannot establish a low-power circuit advantage.

How close is the technology to everyday electronics?

Multiferroics are best understood as an active research route within a larger low-power-electronics portfolio. The 2024 Roadmap on low-power electronics places multiferroic ideas alongside many other advanced materials and device approaches; a roadmap identifies important research directions, not a product guarantee. APL Materials (2024)

There is no single commercialization threshold because the answer differs for a memory cell, a sensor, an antenna, and a logic element. A convincing demonstration must show that the coupling survives fabrication, that switching and readout meet the application’s timing and error requirements, and that the full system—not just the active film—uses less energy than a comparable alternative. Until those conditions are demonstrated under matched conditions, proposed applications should be described as developmental.

A practical checklist for judging a low-power claim

  1. Identify the material and phase. Confirm that the claim concerns a defined multiferroic or a specified magnetoelectric device stack, not the category in general.
  2. Find the coupling pathway. Ask whether the response is direct, strain-mediated, interface-mediated, or spin-induced, and which symmetry allows it.
  3. Check the operating conditions. Record temperature, magnetic bias, electric-field amplitude, pulse duration, film thickness, and device area.
  4. Separate material energy from system energy. Include drivers, sense amplifiers, interconnects, leakage, and any assist fields.
  5. Demand reliability data. Look for switching probability, retention, endurance, variability, and read-disturb results.
  6. Compare like with like. A lower energy per pulse is meaningful only when the competing device performs the same operation at comparable speed, error rate, and temperature.

Bottom line

Multiferroic materials bring electric and magnetic order together; magnetoelectric coupling is the feature that could let voltage control a magnetic state. That capability motivates nonvolatile memory, logic-memory, sensing, and RF or electromechanical concepts that might avoid some current-driven or magnetic-field-driven losses. It does not make every multiferroic automatically efficient. Material-specific coupling, temperature stability, switching and readout behavior, fabrication, and full-system measurements will decide whether a proposed device delivers a real energy advantage.
