Apple Home is Apple’s app and ecosystem for adding, automating and controlling accessories. HomeKit is Apple’s smart-home framework and API. They are related, but they are not interchangeable names for the same technology.
Apple Home can add and control compatible Matter accessories alongside traditional HomeKit accessories. During setup, an iPhone scans a Matter code and provisions the accessory onto Wi‑Fi or Thread when appropriate. Whether every function works depends on the accessory category, its transport, Apple software, and—especially for remote access, automations or Thread devices—the available home hub.

Matter, Apple Home and HomeKit: the layers to understand
Smart-home products involve several layers. Confusing those layers is the main reason a product described as Matter-compatible can still behave differently in Apple Home, Google Home or another controller.

Apple added Matter support to its platforms beginning with iOS 16.1. Apple Developer describes iOS 16.1 and later as supporting Matter so a wide range of accessories can work across platforms. In practical terms, Matter is the common language and Apple Home is one place where that language can be used.

How Matter appears in Apple Home
When a compatible Matter accessory is added to Apple Home, it can be exposed through the Home app and supported Apple interfaces such as Siri and Control Center. A third-party app that uses Apple’s HomeKit API can control a Matter accessory that is already in Apple Home; the accessory does not necessarily have to be paired again in each HomeKit-based app.
The accessory still has to be a product that Apple supports. Matter certification alone does not promise that Apple Home exposes every feature, nor that all platforms support a category at the same time. A lock, thermostat, light or sensor may be certified for Matter while a particular platform initially supports only part of its feature set.
How Matter setup works
Commissioning is the process of joining a Matter accessory to a controller and its home network. Apple’s documented flow uses a setup code, usually printed on the product, its packaging or an included card.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the exact model. Confirm that the product is Matter-certified and explicitly lists Apple Home support. Check its supported accessory category, firmware requirements and whether it uses Wi‑Fi or Thread.
- Prepare the Apple device. Update the iPhone or iPad to the software version required by the accessory. Make sure Bluetooth and the local network are available during commissioning.
- Open the add-accessory flow. In the Home app, choose the command to add an accessory. Apple’s current instructions may also allow the process from a compatible HomeKit-based app.
- Scan or enter the Matter code. Use the camera to scan the product’s Matter setup code, or enter the code manually if the camera cannot read it.
- Allow network provisioning. iOS supplies the relevant network credentials and places the accessory on Wi‑Fi or Thread, as appropriate for that model. A Wi‑Fi product joins the home Wi‑Fi network; a Thread product needs a functioning Thread network.
- Assign and test it. Give the accessory a name and room, then test its primary control in the Home app. Test the functions you actually intend to automate rather than assuming every advertised function is available in Apple Home.
Apple also supports adding a Matter accessory that was paired previously with another Matter app. In the add-accessory flow, select the option for an existing accessory and follow the product maker’s instructions. The exact wording and sequence can differ between products.
Thread is a transport, not a replacement for Matter
Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology designed for smart-home devices. Thread-enabled devices can pass traffic through the mesh, which can improve coverage without requiring every battery-powered device to use Wi‑Fi. Matter, by contrast, defines the interoperability and application layer above the network.
A Matter product can use Wi‑Fi, Ethernet or Thread. Therefore, a label saying Matter does not tell you whether a hub, Thread border router or particular Wi‑Fi configuration is required. A Thread Matter accessory still needs suitable Thread network support. Thread and Matter are complementary: Thread carries the traffic, while Matter describes how compatible devices and controllers communicate.

Do you need a hub for Matter in Apple Home?
The answer depends on the accessory, Apple software version and what you want to do. Apple’s home-hub support documentation says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app and identifies Thread-capable hub examples. Apple’s newer pairing instructions state that an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub under additional conditions, with separate requirements for Thread accessories.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBecause Apple’s instructions describe different scenarios, do not treat either statement as a universal rule for every model and software release. Check the live Apple requirements for the exact accessory and your iOS version before buying. A hub is still the practical choice when you need functions that depend on a resident device in the home.
What a home hub adds
- Remote access: control the home while you are away instead of only when your phone is on the local network.
- Automations: run scenes and rules when nobody’s iPhone is present to act as the controller.
- Shared control: provide the household with consistent access through Apple Home sharing.
- Thread support: provide the Thread capability needed by Thread accessories when the chosen hub or border-router arrangement supports it.
Apple lists HomePod mini and certain Apple TV 4K models as examples of devices that can provide home-hub functions and, for applicable models, Thread support. Not every Apple TV model is Thread-capable, and older Apple TV or HomePod hardware can have additional compatibility qualifications. Verify the model rather than relying on the product family name alone.
Using one Matter accessory with multiple ecosystems
Matter was designed for multi-ecosystem control. Apple documents adding an accessory that was previously paired in another ecosystem app, and Google describes Matter accessories being controlled simultaneously by multiple Matter-certified apps.
This does not mean one universal pairing button works identically on every product. You may need the accessory maker’s app, a second commissioning code or a multi-admin option in the first ecosystem. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, then add the same accessory to Apple Home through the existing-accessory path. Check each ecosystem separately: one platform may expose a device’s basic on/off control while another exposes additional settings.
What to check before buying a Matter product for Apple Home
- Certification and Apple support: look for Matter certification and an explicit statement that the exact model works with Apple Home.
- Category support: confirm that Apple Home supports the product type and the individual functions you need.
- Transport: identify whether it uses Wi‑Fi, Ethernet or Thread.
- Software: check the required iOS, iPadOS, macOS or accessory firmware version.
- Hub or border router: determine whether your setup needs a home hub, Thread-capable hub or compatible Thread border router.
- Use case: decide whether you need local control only, remote access, automations, household sharing or simultaneous control from more than one ecosystem.
- Manufacturer instructions: read the model-specific commissioning and multi-ecosystem steps, especially if the product was already paired elsewhere.
Platform support evolves independently. Certified platforms add accessory categories and capabilities on different schedules, so the Matter logo is a starting point for compatibility checking, not a complete feature matrix.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
The setup code will not scan
Increase the screen brightness or improve the lighting on a printed code, clean the camera lens and try manual entry if Apple offers it. Confirm that you are using the Matter setup code rather than a Wi‑Fi password, serial number or a code intended only for the manufacturer’s app.
The accessory is found but will not join the network
Check whether the model is Wi‑Fi or Thread. A Wi‑Fi device may require the phone and accessory to be on a compatible local network during setup. A Thread device needs Thread infrastructure supplied by a suitable hub or border router. Restarting the accessory and repeating commissioning can clear a failed first attempt, but do not assume a Wi‑Fi troubleshooting step can fix a missing Thread network.
Basic control works but a feature is missing
Compare the accessory’s advertised feature list with Apple Home’s supported category and the current firmware notes. Matter standardizes communication, but platforms add categories and optional capabilities at different times. A missing function is not proof that the product is not Matter-certified.
Remote control or automations do not work
Check whether the home has a configured hub and whether that hub is online. Local control from an iPhone can work even when remote access and resident automations are unavailable. For Thread products, confirm that the hub or border router is Thread-capable and meets Apple’s current model requirements.
The accessory was already paired in another app
Use Apple Home’s existing-accessory option and follow the manufacturer’s multi-ecosystem instructions. Removing the device from the first ecosystem may be unnecessary and can create another commissioning job, so try the supported sharing flow first.

Matter reduces the risk that choosing one smart-home ecosystem permanently locks an accessory to it. A certified product can, when the product and platforms support the same category, be commissioned into more than one ecosystem and controlled through each ecosystem’s apps.

It does not remove the need to check models, transports, software and hubs. Matter also does not make every accessory feature identical in Apple Home, nor does it turn Thread into Wi‑Fi. The reliable buying method is to verify the exact model’s Apple Home support and then match its network and hub requirements to your home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Matter automatically mean a device will work with HomeKit?
No. Matter improves cross-platform interoperability, but Apple Home still needs support for the accessory category and the product’s available functions. Check the exact model’s Apple Home compatibility, transport and software requirements.
Can I use the same Matter device with Apple Home and Google Home?
Often, yes. Matter supports multi-ecosystem control, and both Apple and Google document adding previously paired accessories. The accessory maker may require a specific multi-admin or sharing procedure.
Do I need a hub for a Matter accessory in Apple Home?
Not in every current setup. Apple’s instructions vary by iOS version, accessory and transport: iOS 18 or later can support some hub-free iPhone pairing, while remote access, automations and many Thread arrangements still depend on suitable home-hub or border-router support.
The Bottom Line
Matter is the shared connectivity standard; Apple Home is Apple’s control ecosystem; HomeKit is Apple’s framework and API. A Matter accessory can work in Apple Home, but certification alone does not guarantee every feature or eliminate network and hub requirements. Verify the exact model, transport, Apple software and intended use before purchase.
