A leverage cap is the highest exposure a trading venue permits for a given amount of margin. It is usually expressed as a multiple—such as 5x, 10x or 50x—but the multiple is only one part of the limit. Exchanges commonly combine maximum leverage with notional (position-size) tiers, so a high multiple may be available for a small position while a larger position must use more collateral or a lower maximum leverage.
There is no single leverage cap for “crypto” as a whole. The live limit depends on the exchange, contract, position size, margin mode, customer eligibility and jurisdiction. Initial margin determines what you need to open or increase a position; maintenance margin determines whether you can keep it open. If account equity falls below the maintenance threshold, the venue’s liquidation process can begin.

What a leverage cap means
Leverage measures the exposure controlled relative to the margin posted. Coinbase states the single-position relationship as Leverage = Position size ÷ Margin. A 10 BTC position backed by 0.5 BTC of margin therefore represents 20x leverage, before considering fees, funding, collateral haircuts or other venue rules. A leverage cap limits that ratio. If a contract is capped at 10x, the initial margin cannot be less than roughly 10% of the position’s notional value under the basic ratio. The cap does not promise that a trader can open any size position at 10x: a separate notional ceiling or a higher margin tier may apply.

Maximum leverage versus maximum notional
Trading interfaces can show two different constraints:
- Maximum leverage: the highest permitted exposure-to-margin multiple for the selected contract and tier.
- Maximum notional or position size: the largest exposure allowed at that multiple or within that tier.
For example, a venue might allow 20x on a small position but require 10x or less after the position crosses a notional band. This structure limits the amount of exposure that can accumulate at the most aggressive leverage settings. Coinbase International Exchange documents contract-specific notional ceilings that vary by leverage and also lists account-level limits for positions above default leverage; its published figures are venue-specific, not an industry standard. How the leverage calculation works
The arithmetic is straightforward, but the amount a platform actually reserves can include additional requirements. An illustrative $10,000 notional position at 5x implies about $2,000 of initial margin. At 10x, the same notional implies about $1,000. Those figures illustrate the ratio only; trading fees, unrealized profit or loss, funding, collateral valuation, contract specifications and risk tiers can change the amount required in an account.

Binance’s Coin-M futures documentation expresses the basic initial-margin relationship as initial-margin rate = 1 ÷ leverage. Thus a 5x setting corresponds to a 20% initial-margin rate before any bracket-specific adjustments. The same guide says maximum leverage generally falls as notional position value rises. Read the current contract table rather than inferring a limit from the headline multiple.

Initial margin and maintenance margin do different jobs
Initial margin: the amount needed to open
Initial margin is the collateral required when you open or increase a derivatives position. Selecting a higher leverage setting normally lowers the initial margin percentage, allowing a larger notional position for the same collateral. It does not remove the requirement to keep sufficient equity in the account after the trade is open.
Maintenance margin: the amount needed to keep it open
Maintenance margin is the minimum equity the venue requires while the position remains open. Losses, fees, funding payments and changes in collateral value can reduce available equity. If it falls below the maintenance threshold, the venue can start liquidation. Kraken explains this distinction in its derivatives leverage and margining documentation.
Maintenance requirements may be bracketed by position size and can be calculated independently from the leverage setting. Binance’s Coin-M guide, for instance, separates the initial-margin rate (which is tied to the selected leverage) from a maintenance-margin bracket model. Consequently, choosing a lower leverage setting does not eliminate liquidation risk: a sufficiently adverse price move can still reduce equity below maintenance margin.

Use the liquidation estimate shown for the specific contract and account, and treat it as an exchange calculation rather than a market-wide constant.

Why maximum leverage usually decreases as a position grows
Large positions can be harder to close without moving the market and can create greater loss concentrations during a fast price move. Exchanges therefore commonly assign risk tiers based on notional value. As a position enters a higher tier, the maximum leverage may fall, the maintenance-margin percentage may rise, or both may occur.
This is why a trader can see a 25x or 50x option for a small order but receive an error, a lower maximum or a larger margin requirement when adding to the position. The relevant variable is often the total position notional after the new order, not merely the size of that individual order. Reducing an existing position can move the account back into a lower tier, subject to the venue’s update rules.
Cross margin and isolated margin change where losses land
Cross margin
Cross margin allows eligible collateral in a margin account to support multiple positions. Coinbase describes cross-margin positions as sharing account margin. A loss in one contract can therefore consume equity that would otherwise support another position. Kraken notes that liquidation in a cross-margin account can affect all contracts in that margin account, according to its platform rules.

Isolated margin assigns a separate collateral amount to a position. Coinbase says isolated positions keep their margin separate from other positions. A liquidation generally confines the allocated collateral to that position, although the exact treatment of additional margin, order fees and platform insurance mechanisms is venue-specific. Isolation limits the spread of a single position’s loss; it does not prevent that position from being liquidated.

Changing margin mode can alter the amount available to absorb losses and the scope of a liquidation event. Check the mode before submitting an order, especially when an interface preserves the previous setting for a new contract.

These examples demonstrate how caps are presented; they do not establish a global maximum. A contract, account or region may have a lower limit than the platform-level headline, and a venue can revise its schedule.

- Confirm eligibility and jurisdiction. Derivatives products are not available to every customer or in every country. Read the venue’s eligibility notice and the terms for your account region.
- Open the exact contract specification. Select the coin, expiry or perpetual contract and settlement currency. Do not rely on a generic futures page when the instrument has its own table.
- Check the leverage selector and tier table. Record the maximum multiple and the notional range associated with it. Look for separate account-level or position-size limits.
- Identify the margin mode. Verify whether the order uses cross or isolated margin and note which collateral assets are eligible.
- Read both margin figures. Confirm the initial-margin requirement for opening and the maintenance-margin rate or bracket for staying open.
- Recheck after changing size. Adding an order can move the combined position into a lower-leverage or higher-maintenance tier. Review the preview after the order size, leverage or margin mode changes.
- Use the live contract page before submission. Exchanges can update limits; Coinbase says its limits are reviewed frequently, and Kraken’s EEA schedule may change without warning.
Worked examples
Same notional, different leverage
Suppose a trader considers a $10,000 notional position. At 5x, the ratio implies approximately $2,000 of initial margin; at 10x, approximately $1,000. If the venue assigns a 6% maintenance requirement to that position, the trader must retain enough equity to satisfy that requirement after losses and charges. The 10x choice leaves less initial collateral relative to exposure, so a smaller adverse move can consume the available buffer. The exact liquidation point still requires the venue’s mark-price and fee calculations.
A larger position enters a new tier
Assume the contract permits 20x up to a stated notional band but only 10x above it. A $5,000 position could fit within the first band, while adding another $6,000 makes the combined $11,000 position subject to the second band. The exchange may require additional collateral or reject the order until leverage is reduced. This is a notional-tier rule, not a contradiction of the original 20x maximum for smaller positions.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Treating a headline maximum as guaranteed: “Up to 50x” is a platform statement, not a promise for every contract, region or account.
- Confusing leverage with a loss limit: Leverage changes the collateral-to-exposure ratio. It does not cap the dollar loss before maintenance margin is breached.
- Ignoring total notional: Risk tiers usually consider the resulting position, including existing exposure and sometimes open orders.
- Assuming isolated margin makes liquidation impossible: It limits which collateral is exposed, but the isolated position can still be liquidated.
- Using an old schedule: Contract limits and regional rules can change. Check the date and the live instrument page every time the venue warns of an update.
- Comparing percentages without the same definitions: An initial-margin rate and a maintenance-margin rate answer different questions. Compare like with like.
- Overlooking collateral rules: Haircuts, eligible assets, fees and funding can reduce usable equity even when the displayed leverage setting is unchanged.
Why leverage caps exist
Caps are a risk-control mechanism for both the trader and the venue. Requiring more collateral as exposure grows provides a buffer against rapid price moves. Notional ceilings also limit concentrated positions that could be difficult to liquidate in a thin order book. Venues may adjust tiers after reviewing liquidity, trading volume, stress-test results or insurance-fund capacity, as Coinbase International Exchange says it does.
A cap cannot make a derivative safe or predict prices. It only constrains how much exposure can be created for a given amount of collateral. The remaining risk depends on the contract, the market, the account’s margin mode and the trader’s ability to maintain equity above the maintenance requirement.
What to remember when a platform changes your maximum
A lower maximum after increasing size is normally evidence that the position crossed a risk tier, not a malfunction. First compare the new combined notional with the contract’s schedule. Then check whether an open order, unrealized loss, funding charge or collateral haircut changed the available margin. If the interface still shows an unexpected limit, cancel or reduce the order and consult the venue’s current contract-specific support page; do not infer a universal rule from another coin or another exchange.
