An ontology or schema gives those links consistent meaning. In legacy modernization, that semantic map helps teams discover hidden dependencies, assess change impact, map data transformations and plan work in bounded increments.
You do not necessarily have to move an existing database into a graph database. A virtual knowledge graph can expose relational and other sources through mappings, while selected facts can be materialized where reasoning, cross-system traversal or predictable performance requires graph-native storage.

What a knowledge graph is
A graph plus shared meaning
A basic graph stores nodes and edges. A knowledge graph adds a formal vocabulary: the ontology or schema defines concepts in the domain, the types of relationships that may connect them, and constraints on valid data. Instead of an unlabeled link between two records, the graph can state that a Billing Program reads a Customer Table, that a Policy governs a Transaction, or that a source field is transformed into a target attribute.

This semantic layer lets people and software ask questions in business terms. It can support queries such as “Which customer-facing processes depend on this table?” or “Which target fields receive values derived from this legacy attribute?” The precise ontology language, query interface and inference engine vary by implementation; not every knowledge graph uses RDF, SPARQL or the same schema technology.

The building blocks
- Entities: programs, jobs, services, files, tables, columns, APIs, processes, products, contracts, policies and business capabilities.
- Relationships: reads, writes, calls, implements, owns, transforms, replaces, depends on, satisfies or is governed by.
- Ontology or schema: definitions for concepts, permitted relationship types and constraints.
- Identifiers and entity resolution: rules for deciding when names from different systems refer to the same thing.
- Provenance: links back to source records, code locations, mapping rules and transformation steps.
- Validation and inference: checks for invalid structures and, where appropriate, derived relationships based on declared rules.
The result is a navigable model of how technical assets and business meaning fit together, rather than another isolated inventory.
Why legacy modernization benefits from a knowledge graph
Recovering architecture from incomplete documentation
Older applications often have scattered documentation, duplicated data definitions and dependencies hidden in batch jobs or interface conventions. Code, database schemas and operational artifacts can be loaded into an analysis graph so architects can inspect relationships that are difficult to see in source files or spreadsheets.
IBM Research’s paper Incremental Analysis of Legacy Applications Using Knowledge Graphs for Application Modernization, dated January 8, 2022, describes a customizable ontology for source code and artifacts such as data schemas. Analysts can draw logical boundaries around dependent programs, transactions and database tables, then explore dependencies between those boundaries. The paper reports an initial study on two client applications; it does not provide a universal modernization success rate or return-on-investment figure.

When a column, transaction or service changes, the graph can trace paths to affected programs, reports, interfaces, business processes and contracts. Teams can filter the impact by application, owner, environment or business capability and use the result to define a modernization increment. This is more actionable than a flat list of assets because the relationship type explains why an asset is relevant.
Connecting technical structures to business concepts
A migration effort must translate technical fields into concepts that make sense in the target system. A metadata graph can connect source databases, interfaces and artifacts, while a semantic transformation graph represents business concepts and the rules that convert source values into target values. The combination supports dependency discovery, transformation modeling, migration-template population and end-to-end traceability.
A conference session describing a black-box mainframe and a customized MOVEX installation illustrates the scale such work can reach. The description says more than 6,500 attributes, business processes, user interfaces, contracts and target-system structures required analysis despite incomplete documentation and limited source-code access. It presents the graphs as tools for finding hidden dependencies and tracing information from source systems through transformations to target imports. That figure describes the scope of the cited case, not an industry benchmark.

Supporting incremental modernization
A graph allows a team to start with one bounded system or domain instead of modeling the entire enterprise. You can begin with a payment process, a customer master or a high-risk interface, then add adjacent entities as a concrete decision requires them. This reduces the risk of building a large ontology that has no operational use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow graph-assisted modernization works
- Define the decisions to support. Specify whether the first release must answer dependency, impact-analysis, migration-lineage or data-reconciliation questions. A useful scope is a system boundary or business capability, not an abstract “enterprise graph.”
- Inventory source artifacts. Collect code metadata, schemas, table and column definitions, interface specifications, batch schedules, contracts, process documentation and ownership information. Record the source and extraction time for each fact.
- Design a minimal ontology. Define only the concepts and relationship types required for the first decisions. Include identifiers, ownership, lifecycle state and confidence where they affect use.
- Map source structures to concepts. Establish how a program, table or field in each source corresponds to an ontology entity. Keep mapping rules versioned; source names alone are not reliable identity keys.
- Load and validate an analysis graph. Ingest relationships and run structural checks. Flag missing owners, impossible relationship types, duplicate identities and references to deleted artifacts.
- Review semantics with domain experts. Architects can define technical links, but business analysts and subject-matter experts must confirm that concepts such as “customer,” “order” or “active policy” mean the same thing across systems.
- Use the graph to plan a slice. Select a dependency boundary, migration wave or replacement service. Trace upstream and downstream effects before changing code or data.
- Capture transformations and outcomes. Record source-to-target mappings, conversion rules, exceptions, validation results and the destination of each migrated fact. Update the graph as the target design changes.
Do you have to move your database?
No. A virtual knowledge graph can leave records in existing relational, warehouse or distributed stores and expose them through mappings. AWS describes an ontology-based data-access pattern in which SPARQL queries against an ontology are translated into SQL for relational sources using R2RML mappings and OWL ontologies.
Virtualization is useful when source systems remain authoritative, copying data would be expensive or freshness matters. It still requires carefully maintained mappings, compatible query performance, access controls and handling for source outages. A virtual layer is not a way to avoid data-quality work.
Materialization stores selected facts in graph-native storage. This is appropriate when cross-domain links, extracted propositions, inference results, stable low-latency traversal or source-independent availability are important. A hybrid design virtualizes authoritative operational data and materializes only the relationships or derived facts that need those properties. AWS guidance presents incremental delivery in this form: virtualize first, then materialize and enrich where a use case justifies it.
| Approach | Where facts live | Best fit | Trade-offs to assess |
|---|---|---|---|
| Analysis graph | Extracted metadata and relationships | Reverse engineering, dependency discovery and modernization planning | Must refresh as code and schemas change; completeness depends on extraction |
| Virtual knowledge graph | Existing relational or distributed sources behind mappings | Semantic access without wholesale migration | Mapping maintenance, source availability and query translation performance |
| Materialized graph | Selected facts and derived relationships in graph storage | Inference, cross-domain traversal and predictable graph queries | Replication, freshness, storage and reconciliation responsibilities |
| Hybrid graph | Authoritative sources plus persisted graph facts | Incremental adoption with targeted graph-native capabilities | More complex provenance, synchronization and operational ownership |
Analysis graph or operational graph?
The first architectural decision is whether the graph is primarily an engineering instrument or a production data product.
Recommended Free Tools
| Question | Analysis graph | Operational graph |
|---|---|---|
| Primary users | Architects, engineers and migration teams | Applications, analysts and customer-facing workflows |
| Typical content | Code dependencies, schemas, interfaces, ownership and transformation metadata | Business entities and relationships used during live operations |
| Update pattern | Refresh after scans, releases or modeling changes | Continuous or transactional updates with defined service levels |
| Success measure | Faster, more complete impact analysis and traceability | Correct answers, latency, availability and safe updates for consuming applications |
| Main risk | Stale or incomplete extraction | Incorrect semantics or synchronization affecting production decisions |
The distinction matters because a graph that is excellent for exploring dependencies may not meet the availability, write-consistency or latency requirements of a production application. Conversely, a production product graph may not contain the code-level metadata needed for modernization planning.

Governance: the work a graph does not automate
Ontology ownership
Assign responsibility for definitions, relationship types and lifecycle changes. Knowledge practitioners can maintain ontology and mapping rules, while business domain experts validate whether the model reflects current policy and terminology. Treat ontology changes like code: review them, version them and test their downstream effects.
Identity and mapping quality
Two systems may use different identifiers for the same customer, product or process, or the same label for different concepts. Establish matching rules, confidence levels and an exception queue. Do not merge entities solely because their names look similar.
Provenance and lineage
Every important fact should be traceable to a source record, code location, extraction run or transformation rule. For migration, retain the path from the original field through conversions and validation to the target import. Provenance makes disputed mappings reviewable and supports reconciliation after cutover.
Constraints and validation
Validate required properties, relationship cardinality, value formats and prohibited combinations. The product-information case from AWS describes RDF with SHACL validation for product attributes, demonstrating one implementation pattern; other projects may use different constraint technologies.
Security and operations
Apply source-level authorization to virtual queries and graph-level controls to materialized facts. Define refresh schedules, failure handling, retention, audit logging and ownership before the graph becomes a dependency for migration decisions. Monitor stale mappings and broken source references, not only database availability.
Documented examples and what they show
IBM’s legacy-application analysis
The 2022 IBM Research work demonstrates an interactive, customizable analysis graph that combines application and data artifacts. Its contribution is a method for defining logical boundaries and exploring dependencies incrementally. The initial study covered two client applications, so it supports the feasibility of the approach rather than a claim that every modernization program will achieve a particular saving.

A mainframe and customized MOVEX migration
The conference session description presents two complementary graphs: one for metadata relationships and one for semantic transformations around business concepts. In the reported case, they were used to discover hidden dependencies, model complex transformations, generate and populate migration templates and preserve traceability across source and target structures. The description does not establish a publication year or independently measured project outcomes.
CSC Generation’s product-information platform
An AWS Database Blog case study describes CorePIM, a product-information system built around a knowledge graph powered by Amazon Neptune. The earlier product-information system used MySQL, and the post says its query approach did not scale efficiently with the company’s growing catalog. CorePIM models heterogeneous product information for discovery across brands and uses RDF and SHACL validation. It is a vendor-authored implementation example, not independent evidence that graph databases outperform relational databases in general.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose an implementation pattern
| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Purpose | Is the graph for reverse engineering, migration control, operational queries or several distinct workloads? |
| Data placement | Can authoritative records remain in place, or do reasoning, traversal, latency or source availability require materialization? |
| Semantic depth | Do you need a lightweight schema, formal ontology, inference or constraint validation? |
| Lineage | Can each fact be traced to a source record and transformation, and can reviewers inspect disputed mappings? |
| Integration | How will the graph connect to existing databases, catalogs, APIs, identity systems and query tools? |
| Ownership | Who maintains mappings, ontology definitions, refresh jobs, access policies and incident response? |
| Scope | What bounded domain can demonstrate value without requiring an enterprise-wide model? |
There is no evidence that one graph product, query language or storage model is universally best. Select the pattern that fits the workload and skills already available, then prove it with a narrow slice.
Measuring whether the graph helps
Set a baseline before implementation. Useful project-specific measures include:
- Time required to identify all upstream and downstream dependencies for a change.
- Percentage of migration mappings with an approved business owner and source lineage.
- Number of unresolved identity or semantic exceptions per release.
- Reconciliation defects discovered before and after target-system import.
- Time to produce a complete impact report for a modernization increment.
- Freshness of extracted metadata and rate of broken source references.
The cited IBM study, migration-session description and AWS case study do not provide comparable industry benchmarks for these measures. Use them to evaluate your own program rather than promising a generic percentage improvement.
Common failure modes and fixes
Modeling everything before serving a use case
Symptom: months of ontology design with no decision supported. Fix: choose one modernization question, model the minimum concepts needed and expand only when a new dependency or business rule requires it.
Best Value
Treating labels as identities
Symptom: duplicate entities or incorrect links across systems. Fix: define identity rules, retain source identifiers and route ambiguous matches to domain review.
Assuming a graph guarantees correct data
Symptom: visually convincing relationships based on stale schemas or unverified mappings. Fix: attach provenance, run constraints, timestamp extracts and show confidence or review status.
Copying all data unnecessarily
Symptom: a costly replication project delays the modernization decision. Fix: evaluate a virtual or hybrid design and materialize only facts that need graph-native traversal, inference or source-independent availability.
Using an analysis graph as a production system
Symptom: missing freshness, access controls or write guarantees. Fix: define production service levels separately and design ingestion, authorization and synchronization for that workload.
Promising savings without a baseline
Symptom: claims of faster delivery or lower cost that cannot be verified. Fix: measure dependency-analysis time, mapping completeness, defects and reconciliation effort for a defined modernization slice.
Bottom line
Knowledge graphs help modernize legacy software by turning hidden technical and business relationships into an explicit, queryable model. They are especially useful for dependency discovery, change-impact analysis, semantic data transformation and migration lineage. Start with a bounded decision, govern identity and meaning rigorously, and choose virtual, materialized or hybrid storage according to the workload. The graph is a reasoning and coordination layer—not a substitute for source-data quality, domain expertise or a clearly defined modernization goal.
