Hidden degrees of freedom are physical variables left out of the state you measure: microscopic bath coordinates, internal apparatus states, or environmental modes. They can retain correlations with an observed system and later return information to it. That stored non-equilibrium free energy and correlation can be converted into work, so an experiment that watches only the visible coordinate may appear to extract more work than that coordinate contained.

No energy is created. The apparent excess comes from free energy and information stored in degrees of freedom that the first measurement ignored. Whether it can be recovered depends on the system’s memory, the measurements available, and the feedback operations allowed.

What a hidden degree of freedom is

Suppose a coordinate x describes a Brownian particle in an optical trap. The particle is also colliding with countless molecules in the surrounding fluid. Their positions, velocities and internal states are not recorded in the usual experiment, so they form hidden degrees of freedom, which we can call y. The complete microscopic state is therefore (x, y), while the observer sees only x.

The full state can obey an ordinary Markov rule: once both x and y are known, the future does not depend on the earlier history. After y is discarded, however, the probability of the next value of x depends on how the particle arrived there. The observed coordinate has memory because the omitted variables still carry records of the past.

Hidden variables need not be microscopic bath particles. They can be an unmeasured conformation of a molecule, a memory state in a controller, a slowly relaxing mode in a material, or a detector’s internal state. “Hidden” means inaccessible to the chosen description, not unreal or physically negligible.

Where the extractable work is stored

Non-equilibrium free energy

A system out of equilibrium can do work as it relaxes. For a distribution ρ in a potential V, the available amount is its non-equilibrium free energy above equilibrium. In the setting discussed by stochastic thermodynamics, the excess is written as a relative entropy (Kullback–Leibler divergence):

Wm ≤ kBT DKL[ρm(x) || ρeq(x)] = Fneq[ρm;V] − Feq

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Here m labels a measurement result, ρm is the state conditioned on that result, ρeq is the equilibrium state, kB is Boltzmann’s constant and T is the bath temperature. The divergence is zero at equilibrium and positive when the conditioned distribution is distinguishable from equilibrium. Relaxation normally destroys this excess, so a controller tries to extract it before it is dissipated.

Correlation free energy

With hidden variables, the relevant distribution is the joint state ρ(x,y), not just the marginal distribution of x. Correlations between x and y are a thermodynamic resource because knowing one variable changes what can be predicted about the other. A marginal description can therefore report little visible energy while the joint state remains far from equilibrium.

This is why “extra work” is a bookkeeping effect, not a violation of the second law. The work was associated with the full state all along. A protocol that measures only x leaves part of that resource unused; a later measurement can recover some of it if the hidden variables have influenced the particle in a detectable way.

W ≤ −ΔF + kBT I(Z:M)

W is the average net extracted work, ΔF is the equilibrium free-energy change associated with the extraction protocol, Z is the full microscopic state, M is the measurement outcome and I(Z:M) is their mutual information. Mutual information quantifies how much the outcome reduces uncertainty about the microscopic state. Multiplying it by kBT gives its thermodynamic value at temperature T.

The equation has two distinct contributions. The free-energy term describes what the controlled system would yield from its equilibrium change. The information term accounts for the extra work made possible by tailoring feedback to the measured state. If a measurement reveals only the visible coordinate while hidden correlations remain inaccessible, the usable information is smaller than it would be for a measurement of the full state.

How a delayed measurement can recover hidden work

The directly matching experiment, The extraction of work from hidden degrees of freedom by Muruga, Ginot, Loos and colleagues, uses time-resolved observations of an optically trapped Brownian particle and a time-delayed double-measurement protocol. The logic of such a protocol is:

  1. Prepare and measure. The particle is held in a known optical potential and its position is recorded. This first result gives only a partial description of the complete particle-plus-bath state.
  2. Allow evolution. The particle interacts with the surrounding bath. Hidden bath coordinates retain correlations with the earlier position and with the forces that acted on it.
  3. Measure again after a chosen delay. The second observation can reveal information that has flowed back from the hidden variables into the particle’s position. The useful delay is set by the bath’s memory time, not by a universal constant.
  4. Apply feedback. The trap or another control parameter is changed conditionally on the measurement record. The operation is selected to convert the inferred non-equilibrium state into mechanical work.
  5. Account for the complete cycle. Work spent on the measurement, control and eventual reset of memory must be included when calculating net extraction. Gross work from one stroke is not the thermodynamic result.

In a memoryless environment, waiting usually allows non-equilibrium free energy to decay. In a memory-bearing environment, waiting can instead expose information that was not available at the first measurement. The timing decision is therefore part of the thermodynamic control problem.

Markovian and non-Markovian environments compared

Feature Markovian description Non-Markovian description
State needed for prediction The measured state is sufficient once the relevant variables are included. Omitted variables retain correlations, so the observed state alone has history dependence.
What happens during passive relaxation Non-equilibrium free energy decreases in a fixed potential. Information and correlations can flow from hidden variables back to the observed system.
Preferred extraction timing in the rigid-potential protocols discussed An immediate potential shift is favored over waiting for relaxation. A delayed measurement can outperform an immediate one when it captures information backflow.
Meaning of an observable-only energy balance It is adequate when the chosen state captures all relevant memory. It can underestimate the work available from the full joint state.

“Markovian” is not a property of a system in isolation; it is a property of a chosen state description and timescale. Adding enough environmental variables can restore Markovian dynamics. Declaring a process non-Markovian means that the currently observed variables do not contain the memory needed for prediction.

Why coarse-graining changes thermodynamic conclusions

Coarse-graining replaces many microscopic states with a smaller set of mesostates. It is indispensable for real experiments, but it changes what can be inferred. Paths that are distinct microscopically may look identical after hidden coordinates are removed. Entropy production occurring in those coordinates then disappears from the observed trajectory.

Udo Seifert’s 2019 review, From Stochastic Thermodynamics to Thermodynamic Inference, develops methods for inferring thermodynamic quantities when only some mesostates are accessible. The central caution is that an observed trajectory can look nearly reversible even when the unresolved dynamics are dissipative.

Seifert’s review Universal bounds on entropy production from fluctuating coarse-grained trajectories, published 20 July 2026, addresses model-free lower bounds obtained from coarse-grained trajectories. Such bounds cannot recover every hidden contribution, but they prevent an observer from claiming less irreversibility than the accessible data require.

A related control-constraint framework separates accessible free energy from inaccessible free energy. The first is extractable with the operations and measurements actually allowed. The second cannot be controlled under those restrictions and must ultimately appear as entropy production. Improving a detector or adding a feedback channel can move free energy from the inaccessible category into the accessible one without changing the underlying physical state.

What the 16 October 2026 experiment establishes

The Nature Physics article by Muruga, Ginot, Loos and colleagues reports that information backflow from hidden bath degrees of freedom changes the relaxation dynamics of an optically trapped Brownian particle. When the delayed measurement is timed to that backflow, the protocol enhances work extraction. In some regimes, the extracted work exceeds the energy stored in the observable degree of freedom alone.

The last comparison is deliberately limited. It does not say that the experiment extracted more energy than exists in the complete particle-and-environment state, nor that it exceeded the generalized bound. It says that an accounting based only on the tracked coordinate misses resources held in correlations and hidden bath modes.

The result is an experimental demonstration of a general principle: environmental memory can be a resource when it is measurable indirectly and when feedback can act quickly and selectively enough to use it. If the hidden variables never imprint information on an accessible signal, or if control is too slow, their free energy remains inaccessible.

How to analyze a hidden-degree-of-freedom problem

  1. Define the observation boundary. List every variable actually measured and every variable treated as part of the environment. “Hidden” is always relative to this choice.
  2. Write the full state. Use a joint state such as (x,y) and identify which interactions can create correlations.
  3. Test for memory. Check whether the conditional distribution of the next observed state depends on earlier observations after conditioning on the current measured state. Dependence indicates unresolved memory.
  4. Estimate conditioned distributions. For each measurement outcome, determine how far the state is from equilibrium. The relative entropy in the conditional-work bound gives the idealized ceiling before implementation costs.
  5. Quantify information. Evaluate the mutual information between the measurement record and the full state, or a defensible lower bound when the full state is inaccessible.
  6. Optimize timing and control. In a memoryless model, delay generally loses free energy. In a non-Markovian model, scan delays for information backflow and choose controls that convert it into work.
  7. Close the accounting. Include measurement energy, actuation, feedback errors and memory reset. Report net extracted work, not only the favorable stroke.

A concrete mental model

Imagine a trapped particle displaced from the center and then released. At first, the particle’s position reveals a large visible imbalance, so an immediate trap shift can extract work. As the particle moves, nearby bath molecules are pushed and their configurations become correlated with the motion. Later, those molecules relax and exert a correlated force that nudges the particle in a way not predicted by its current position alone.

If the controller measures only the initial displacement, it misses that later correlation. A delayed measurement can detect the returning signal and choose a second trap operation. The additional work comes from the non-equilibrium joint distribution of particle and bath. Once the bath has fully randomized, the correlation is gone and no delayed protocol can recover it.

Common mistakes and practical limits

  • Treating hidden work as free energy from nowhere. The full-system free-energy and information bounds still apply.
  • Assuming a delay always helps. Delay is useful only while hidden variables remain correlated and their information is accessible.
  • Calling every unmeasured variable a resource. An inaccessible variable may contain free energy that no permitted operation can extract.
  • Using an observable-only entropy balance. Coarse-graining can hide entropy production and make an irreversible process look deceptively efficient.
  • Ignoring apparatus memory. A controller’s stored record and the cost of resetting it belong in the cycle-level accounting.
  • Confusing a model with a measurement. A fitted hidden-variable model can estimate missing dissipation, but its bounds depend on whether the model captures the relevant bath modes.

The practical lesson

Hidden degrees of freedom explain why thermodynamic behavior can change when the observer changes the state description. A visible coordinate may look relaxed while correlations with an environment still carry predictive information and non-equilibrium free energy. Measuring that information at the right time and applying allowed feedback can convert part of it into work. The apparent surplus is recovered energy from the full system, not a loophole in the second law.
