GGUF is the file format used by llama.cpp-compatible local runners to package a language model’s tensors and the metadata needed to load them. Quantization is a separate choice that reduces the numerical precision of those tensors so the model takes less storage and memory, usually at some loss of accuracy. A name such as Q4_K_M describes one quantized build; it is not a different model family.
To choose a file, first identify the model and its runtime support, then match the quantization level to your available RAM and GPU VRAM. Q4_K_M is a practical starting point for many models, while Q5_K_M or Q6_K preserve more quality when you have room. Model variants such as base versus instruction-tuned, context-length settings, chat templates, and multimodal projectors are separate decisions from quantization.

What a GGUF file contains
llama.cpp requires models to be stored in GGUF format. GGUF is a portable, self-describing container: it holds the model tensors plus metadata such as the model architecture and tokenizer information. A compatible runner can read that information instead of relying on a collection of separate configuration files.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The format is an interchange and runtime container, not a model family and not a quality score. Two files can both be GGUF while representing entirely different architectures, parameter counts, training data, or instruction behaviors. Conversely, the same underlying model can be exported to several GGUF files with different precision levels.

Repositories on Hugging Face commonly publish many files for one model. You normally select one specific file rather than downloading the entire repository, which may contain every quantization, split shards, documentation, and auxiliary assets.
Why GGUF is useful for local inference
- Portability: architecture and tokenizer metadata travel with the weights.
- Local execution: llama.cpp-based applications can load the file directly without the original training framework.
- Selectable precision: publishers can offer several size and quality trade-offs for the same model.
- Conversion path: models supplied in another format can be converted with llama.cpp’s conversion scripts and then quantized.
What quantization changes
Quantization reduces the numerical precision used to store model weights. A high-precision representation such as F32 or BF16 uses more bits per value; a quantized representation stores values in compact, structured blocks. The result is a smaller file and often faster inference, but the approximation can reduce accuracy. Perplexity and KL divergence are common ways to measure that change.
The usual process has two distinct phases:
- Convert the original model to GGUF. This creates a GGUF representation at the source precision.
- Quantize the converted GGUF. A quantization tool produces the selected Q2, Q4, Q5, Q6, Q8, or other build.
Keeping the original high-precision GGUF is useful if you later need another quantization or want to evaluate the model without quantization loss. Quantizing an already quantized file is not a substitute for starting from the highest-quality source available.

How to read a filename such as Q4_K_M
| Part | Meaning | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, Q8 |
Approximate bit tier | Lower numbers generally produce smaller files and greater quality loss; higher numbers use more memory and retain more quality. |
K |
K-quant family | Uses structured block or super-block schemes with mixed tensor types rather than one uniform precision everywhere. |
S, M, L |
Small, medium, or large variant within a family | Indicates a practical tensor mix and size choice. It is not a universal quality ranking across every architecture. |
F16, BF16, F32 |
Floating-point format | Higher-precision storage rather than an integer-style Q tier; files are much larger but preserve more numerical fidelity. |
IQ |
Importance-aware (“i-quant”) family | Uses importance information to improve low-bit quality. Availability and runtime support must be checked for the particular model and application. |
The letters do not replace the model name. For example, a file named with a model’s 8-billion-parameter instruction variant and Q4_K_M identifies both the behavior of the model and the way its weights were stored. Changing only the suffix changes precision, not the training or instruction tuning.
Q2, Q4, Q5, Q6, and F16 compared
| Choice | Storage and memory | Expected quality | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q2/Q3 | Smallest among common choices | Noticeably greater loss, especially on difficult reasoning, exact wording, and long outputs | When available memory is the hard limit and running this model is more important than maximum fidelity |
| Q4_K_M | Moderate size | Balanced quality for many general workloads | A sensible first download when you need a practical size/quality compromise |
| Q5_K_M | Larger than Q4 | Very low quality loss in the cited LLaMA 7B model card | When you can spend additional memory for more reliable output |
| Q6_K | Larger again | Extremely low quality loss in the cited LLaMA 7B model card | Quality-sensitive use with enough RAM or VRAM headroom |
| Q8 | Close to high-precision storage | Usually the smallest loss among common integer quantizations | When memory is ample and you still want a quantized runtime format |
| F16/BF16 | Much larger | High numerical fidelity | Evaluation, further conversion, or inference on hardware that can hold the larger file |
| F32 | Largest | Highest source precision | Specialized evaluation or conversion workflows where storage and memory are not constraints |
No level is universally best. Quality differences depend on the architecture, the task, the context length, and the runtime. A small quantization that fits entirely in memory can feel faster and more usable than a larger one that constantly spills work between devices.
Concrete file-size examples
The following figures are named entries in the official llama.cpp table from 2026. They illustrate scale; they are not a universal conversion ratio. Parameter count, tensor mix, vocabulary, metadata, and sharding all affect the final size.

A model may be split into several shard files. Treat the sum of the shards as the model’s storage requirement, and leave additional disk space for downloads, temporary conversion files, and the runtime.

The file size is the lower bound, not the complete memory requirement. During inference, the runner also needs memory for the context window’s key-value cache, temporary work buffers, loaded metadata, and the operating system. Longer contexts increase cache use. GPU offload places some or all layers in VRAM; layers that do not fit remain in system RAM, if the application supports split execution.
A practical planning method
- Read the exact file size. Use the listed size of the chosen GGUF, adding all shards if it is split.
- Check the machine’s usable memory. Count system RAM and available VRAM separately; do not treat total installed memory as fully available to the model.
- Reserve headroom. Leave room for the context window, runtime buffers, your operating system, and other applications. A file that barely fits may fail when you increase context or batch size.
- Decide where layers will run. Full GPU loading needs VRAM at least comparable to the model plus runtime overhead. With less VRAM, use partial offload or CPU execution if your runner supports it.
- Test the intended context length. A short prompt can work while the same model fails at a long context because the cache grows with the context.
For orientation, the 4.9 GB Q4_K_M example for Llama 3.1 8B cannot be treated as a 4.9 GB total system requirement; it needs additional working memory. The 43.1 GB 70B example likewise requires a machine configured for tens of gigabytes plus overhead, or a split CPU/GPU setup. Exact requirements vary by runner settings and are not established by the file size alone.

How to choose a GGUF file
- Confirm the architecture. Make sure the runner supports the model family and that the repository identifies the correct tokenizer and architecture metadata.
- Choose the behavior you want. Select an instruction-tuned model for chat and following commands, or a base model for continuation and specialized fine-tuning workflows.
- Match memory first. Start with
Q4_K_Mwhen you need a broadly useful balance. Move toQ5_K_MorQ6_Kif quality matters more and the extra memory is available. - Use Q3 or Q2 deliberately. These are fallback choices when memory is the binding constraint, not automatic upgrades or “faster” versions in every workload.
- Prefer F16 or BF16 for fidelity. Use them when hardware can hold the larger file, when evaluating the model, or when you plan to create additional quantizations.
- Download one exact file. Avoid cloning every quantization variant unless you are maintaining a mirror or performing comparisons.
Benchmark claims should be treated as hardware- and model-dependent. A quantization’s apparent speed depends on CPU instructions, GPU offload, context length, batch size, and the runner version.
Model variants that are not quantization
A repository can contain several materially different versions even when every file ends in .gguf.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Base versus instruction-tuned
A base model predicts continuations from text. An instruction-tuned or chat model has additional training for following requests and formatting conversational answers. Loading the file successfully does not make a base model behave like a chat model; choose the variant that matches your use.
Best Value
Context-length configurations
Some releases are configured or advertised for different maximum context lengths. A larger advertised context does not remove the memory cost of the key-value cache, and the practical limit also depends on the runtime and available memory.
Chat templates
Instruction models rely on a particular arrangement of system, user, and assistant tokens. GGUF metadata may identify a template, but a frontend can still apply the wrong one. Symptoms include an assistant that repeats role labels, ignores system instructions, or produces malformed turns. Select the template documented for that model rather than assuming all chat models use the same format.
Multimodal components
Vision and audio systems may require a separate mmproj GGUF containing the multimodal encoder or projector. llama.cpp documents these companion files separately. They are often kept at BF16 or Q8 because they are smaller than the main language model and can be sensitive to quality loss. A text-only GGUF can therefore load correctly while image or audio input fails because its projector file is missing or incompatible.
Common problems and fixes
The file will not load
- Verify that the architecture is supported by the installed runner version.
- Check that all shard files are present in the same directory and have their original names.
- Confirm that the download completed and that available RAM or VRAM exceeds the file plus runtime overhead.
It loads but responses are poor
- Check whether you selected a base model instead of an instruction-tuned variant.
- Apply the model’s documented chat template.
- Try a higher quantization such as
Q5_K_MorQ6_Kif memory allows. - Ensure the tokenizer and architecture metadata came from the same model release.
It runs out of memory after increasing context
- Reduce the requested context length or batch size.
- Use a smaller quantization, reduce GPU offload, or move more layers to system RAM if supported.
- Close other GPU- and memory-intensive applications before starting the runner.
Vision or audio input is ignored
Check whether the model requires an mmproj GGUF and whether the projector’s architecture and precision are supported by the same runtime. The language-model file alone may be insufficient.
Bottom line
Think of GGUF as the loadable container and quantization as the storage-precision choice inside it. Pick the model behavior first, then select the highest-quality quantization that fits your real RAM, VRAM, context length, and runtime support. For many first installations, Q4_K_M is the sensible starting point; upgrade to Q5_K_M or Q6_K when quality is worth the additional memory, and use F16 or BF16 when preserving precision is more important than size.
