FAST channels are free, ad-supported, scheduled streaming-TV channels. A 24/7 YouTube channel is an always-on livestream on YouTube; it can use a similar linear schedule, but it is not automatically a FAST channel or carried by a FAST television service. To run one on YouTube, confirm live-stream eligibility, choose a source and streaming method, prepare programming you have rights to use, and test the continuous feed before promoting it.
What does FAST mean?
FAST stands for free ad-supported streaming television. An industry explainer describes FAST as a linear, scheduled, always-on channel funded by advertising. That is a useful description of the model, not a formal standards definition. FAST services distribute channels through streaming-TV platforms; the label alone does not describe every free livestream.

Is a 24/7 YouTube livestream a FAST channel?
Not by itself. A YouTube channel that continuously streams scheduled programming may resemble FAST in its always-on, linear presentation, but it remains a YouTube livestream unless it is also distributed through a FAST television service. YouTube describes live streaming as a way to interact with an audience in real time through video, chat, and more. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.

- Eligible channel: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to enable live streaming. Check eligibility before investing in equipment or building a schedule. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- A source and method: YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods. Encoder streaming is useful for production gear, gameplay, and overlays, but a dedicated hardware encoder is not required for every always-on channel.
- Programming and rights: Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every video, audio track, clip, and graphic you plan to broadcast. Continuous playback extends the period in which any rights or policy problem could occur.
- A tested operating plan: Test transitions, audio, stream-key handling, monitoring, and what you will do if the source or connection fails. These are prudent operating steps, not a YouTube-mandated redundancy design.
How to plan and launch a 24/7 YouTube channel
1. Decide what the channel will show
Define the format and schedule first: for example, a rotating set of programs or a themed playlist. Make a rights record for each asset, including music and artwork, rather than assuming that material available online is cleared for rebroadcast. YouTube’s monetization and content rules also apply; consult the current official policies for your channel and content before launch.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
2. Confirm that live streaming is enabled
Verify the channel and check for restrictions before setting up continuous playout. YouTube’s stated eligibility condition includes no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. If the channel cannot go live, resolve that eligibility issue before building the rest of the workflow.
3. Choose how the feed will be produced
Select among YouTube’s documented streaming methods—mobile, webcam, encoder, or console—based on the source. A feed made from prerecorded programming generally needs a way to play and schedule that material continuously; the YouTube setup guidance documents encoder streaming but does not prescribe a particular playout product. A computer-based setup gives you direct control but depends on the computer and its connection staying available. A hosted playout service moves that continuous operation to the cloud.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
4. Keep the continuous feed distinct from one-off broadcasts
If you build an integration using YouTube’s Live Streaming API, it distinguishes broadcast resources from stream resources. YouTube’s documentation gives the example of a channel running a 24/7 feed while creating a separate broadcast for an interview. This lets the ongoing channel and a scheduled special be treated as distinct broadcasts rather than assuming one live event must serve both purposes. See YouTube Live Streaming API: Broadcasts.
5. Test the full schedule before announcing it
- Run through the playlist and verify that transitions do not leave gaps or unintended blank output.
- Listen to the stream at the viewer end to check audio levels and synchronization.
- Confirm the stream key is handled securely and entered into the intended streaming workflow.
- Test how you will notice an interruption and restart or recover the feed.
- Check the schedule at different points, not only at the initial start, before promoting the channel as continuous.
Monetization and policy considerations
Do not treat hours online as guaranteed earnings. YouTube monetization features depend on channel eligibility and settings, and ad slots are not guaranteed to serve an ad. Review the current official YouTube Help and monetization-policy pages for the conditions that apply to your channel; a continuous schedule does not by itself establish eligibility or revenue. Rights and platform rules remain relevant to all scheduled content.
