Dynamax and Gigantamax are two forms used in Pokémon GO’s Max Battles. Dynamax makes an eligible Pokémon much larger and gives it Max Moves. Gigantamax also changes the Pokémon’s appearance and replaces its first Max Move with a species-specific G-Max attack. Both forms appear at Power Spots, use Max Particles to enter battles, and can use the support moves Max Spirit and Max Guard.
Dynamax and Gigantamax: the essential difference
The simplest way to distinguish the forms is to look at two things: appearance and the identity of the Pokémon’s first Max Move.

In other words, Gigantamax is not simply a larger version with a different graphic. Its defining battle distinction is the G-Max attack. Dynamax’s attack follows the Fast Attack type, while Gigantamax’s first attack is tied to the species.

The official Pokémon GO guide describes Dynamax as a phenomenon that causes Pokémon to appear much larger, surrounded by a mysterious red glow and swirling clouds overhead. The effect is visible during the Max Battle system rather than being a permanent change to the Pokémon’s ordinary appearance.

A Dynamax Pokémon can learn up to three Max Moves:
- A Max attack: The first Max Move is a powerful attack based on the type of the Pokémon’s Fast Attack. Changing the Fast Attack therefore determines the attack type used by this first Max Move.
- Max Spirit: A support move that heals the user and its allies.
- Max Guard: A defensive move that reduces damage received from a Power Spot Boss.
The official wording is specific: “While a Pokémon is Dynamaxed, their first Max Move is a powerful attack that’s based on the type of their Fast Attack.” That rule is the practical way to predict what a Dynamax Pokémon’s primary Max attack will do in terms of type.
Max Spirit and Max Guard are not exclusive to Dynamax. They are part of the shared support-move system and can also be learned by Gigantamax Pokémon.
What makes Gigantamax different?
Gigantamax changes both the Pokémon’s size and its visual design. The transformation is species-specific, so the Pokémon does not merely receive the same enlarged appearance used by a Dynamax Pokémon.
Its first Max Move is also different. The official guide states: “While a Pokémon is Gigantamaxed, their first Max Move is a powerful G-Max Move.” A G-Max Move is unique to the species and may have a different type from the Pokémon’s Fast Attack. That means you cannot always predict a Gigantamax attack by checking the Fast Attack alone.
Gigantamax Pokémon can still learn Max Spirit and Max Guard. The distinction is therefore not that one form has support moves and the other does not. The distinction is the special appearance and the species-specific G-Max attack.

Because the G-Max attack is attached to the species, two Pokémon with similar Fast Attacks can still have different first Max Moves if only one is Gigantamax-capable or if their species have different G-Max attacks.

Where Dynamax and Gigantamax are used
Both forms belong to Pokémon GO’s Max Battle system. Max Battles take place at selected Power Spots, which are the locations where players encounter and challenge Power Spot Bosses.
Only Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon can be used in Max Battles. Ordinary Pokémon that have not gained one of these forms cannot be substituted simply because they are strong in other Pokémon GO battle formats.
Trainers spend Max Particles to enter a Max Battle. The number required depends on the strength of the Power Spot Boss, so a tougher encounter costs more particles than a weaker one. The live game shows the entry requirement before you commit your resources.
The official guide says that as many as 40 Trainers can join a Max Battle. Those trainers are divided into groups of four or fewer. The maximum lobby size is not a promise that every battle needs 40 people; it is the stated upper limit for participation in the system.

How to get Dynamax Pokémon
The normal route is to participate in a Max Battle and catch the Pokémon offered after the encounter. The official guidance says Dynamax Pokémon can be encountered, battled, and caught through Max Battles, and that they can be found at Power Spots.

- Find a Power Spot. Look for a current Power Spot in the Pokémon GO map and inspect the Power Spot Boss shown there.
- Collect enough Max Particles. The required amount is tied to the boss’s strength and is displayed by the game.
- Enter the Max Battle. Use the entry prompt at the Power Spot and select eligible Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon for your party.
- Defeat the Power Spot Boss. Coordinate with the available trainers and use Max Moves, including support moves when they help the group survive.
- Complete the encounter. A successful Max Battle can lead to an encounter with a Dynamax Pokémon that you can catch.
This process does not establish a permanent, universal roster. Species appearing at Power Spots are controlled by current events and game updates. A species listed in an older event announcement should not be treated as proof that it is available today.
How to collect and manage Max Particles
Max Particles are the resource used to enter Max Battles. They also matter after capture because Candy and Max Particles are used to unlock or improve Max Moves.
The official guidance lists several ways to collect them:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Visit and interact with Power Spots.
- Explore the world, including through Adventure Sync.
- Engage with a Power Spot for the first time each day for additional particles, where the current game rules provide that bonus.
- Obtain them from shop packs when those packs are offered.
Max Particles have a storage limit and a daily collection limit. The exact limits and shop contents can change, so use the values shown in the current Pokémon GO interface rather than relying on an old guide or event post.
A practical routine is to collect particles before travelling to a difficult Power Spot, check the entry cost at the location, and spend only after confirming that the desired battle is available. Keeping the storage cap in mind also prevents exploration rewards from being wasted when the account is full.
Unlocking and improving Max Moves
Max Moves are not limited to the initial attack. Max Spirit and Max Guard provide recovery and defense options, and the game allows Max Moves to be unlocked or improved using Candy together with Max Particles.

When deciding what to improve first, consider the role your Pokémon will play:
- Prioritize the attack when you need more direct damage and understand that a Dynamax attack follows the Fast Attack type.
- Prioritize Max Spirit when keeping the user and allies healthy is the greater problem.
- Prioritize Max Guard when reducing damage from the Power Spot Boss is more valuable than adding another offensive upgrade.
The available move levels, costs, and interface labels can be adjusted by the game, so confirm the current Candy and Max Particle requirement on the Pokémon’s Max Move screen before spending resources. Do not assume that an upgrade cost from a previous event remains unchanged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Eligibility: not every Pokémon can use either form
Dynamax and Gigantamax are limited to eligible Pokémon. The official material does not support the claim that every species can use either form, and availability changes with events and game updates.
There can also be event-specific capture restrictions. For example, Niantic’s Pokémon GO Wild Area: Global announcement in November 2024 stated that only Pokémon caught from Max Battle encounters, plus their Evolutions, could Dynamax during that event. That was a rule for the named event, not a universal statement about every future Max Battle season.
Before investing Candy or travelling to a Power Spot, check the Pokémon’s current details in the game and read the latest official announcement for the event. A Pokémon’s ordinary availability, evolution line, or performance in another battle format does not by itself prove that it is currently eligible to Dynamax or Gigantamax.
A dated example: Gigantamax Toxtricity
Niantic announced that Gigantamax Toxtricity would appear in six-star Max Battles during the November 2024 Pokémon GO Wild Area: Global event. The event page estimated that groups of 10–20 Trainers should be able to defeat the Gigantamax Toxtricity Power Spot Boss.
Best Value
That figure is useful only as historical context. It was Niantic’s estimate for that specific boss and event, not a general requirement for every Gigantamax battle. Boss strength, available counters, player preparation, and event rules can all change. It should not be presented as current guidance for a different Gigantamax encounter.
How to prepare for a Max Battle
Before leaving for the Power Spot
- Check that you have enough Max Particles for the displayed entry cost.
- Confirm that your selected Pokémon are eligible for Max Battles.
- Review the Max Moves you have unlocked and decide whether attack, healing, or damage reduction is the immediate priority.
- Check the current event announcement for the boss and any capture or eligibility restrictions.
At the Power Spot
- Read the boss information and entry requirement before spending particles.
- Coordinate with the trainers in your group; the system supports groups of four or fewer within a larger gathering of up to 40 participants.
- Use Max Spirit when healing the team is more important than dealing another attack.
- Use Max Guard when reducing incoming damage from the Power Spot Boss can keep the party in the battle longer.
After the battle
- Complete the encounter promptly if the battle awards one.
- Check the caught Pokémon’s Max Move options and eligibility status.
- Spend Candy and Max Particles on upgrades only after deciding whether the Pokémon’s role is offensive, supportive, or defensive.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming Gigantamax is only a visual upgrade
The visual change is obvious, but the important mechanical difference is the G-Max attack. Its type may differ from the Fast Attack type, so evaluate the move shown in the game rather than predicting it from the ordinary moveset.
Assuming the Fast Attack rule applies to every form
The Fast Attack type determines the first Max attack for Dynamax Pokémon. Gigantamax Pokémon use a species-specific G-Max attack instead. Applying the Dynamax rule to a Gigantamax Pokémon can lead to the wrong expectation about its attack type.

Power Spot availability is time-sensitive. Event rosters and featured bosses can change, and the official material does not establish a permanent species list. Verify the current roster in Pokémon GO or in the latest official announcement.
Treating an event estimate as a universal team requirement
The 10–20-Trainer estimate for Gigantamax Toxtricity in November 2024 described one event encounter. It does not define the number of players needed for every boss.
Ignoring resource caps
Max Particles have storage and daily collection limits. Collecting more when the account is already at its cap may not help, so check the resource display before exploring or visiting another Power Spot.
What to remember
Dynamax enlarges an eligible Pokémon and gives it Max Moves, with the first attack based on the Fast Attack type. Gigantamax enlarges the Pokémon, changes its appearance, and gives it a species-specific G-Max attack that may use a different type. Both forms can use Max Spirit to heal and Max Guard to reduce damage from a Power Spot Boss.
You encounter these mechanics in Max Battles at Power Spots. Max Particles pay the entry cost and also help unlock or improve Max Moves alongside Candy. Because eligible species, event rules, particle limits, and shop offerings can change, use the current Pokémon GO interface and official announcements when making a battle plan.
