Drifting buoys, usually called drifters, are free-floating instruments that report their positions as they travel with near-surface ocean currents. NOAA’s Global Drifter Program deploys them throughout the world’s open oceans, while regional research teams release them in particular places to study local currents or specific events. A drifter’s route after release—not just its starting point—shows where the water carries it.
What is a drifting buoy?
A drifter is a satellite-tracked ocean instrument that floats freely rather than being anchored to the seabed. Its surface float carries a transmitter and sensors; a tether connects it to a drogue, or sea anchor, below the surface. The drogue helps the instrument follow the water’s movement instead of being carried mainly by wind at the surface.

In a standard Global Drifter Program design, the drogue is a holey-sock sea anchor centered at 15 meters deep. That is a common configuration, not a universal one: NOAA’s EcoFOCI regional program describes drifters with drogues at 25 or 40 meters. The depth and design affect which layer of water the instrument is intended to follow. (NOAA Global Drifter Program; NOAA EcoFOCI drifters information)

The transmitter sends the drifter’s position through a satellite system. Researchers compare successive position fixes to estimate the current’s speed and direction along the drifter’s path. NOAA’s Global Drifter Program describes its instruments as measuring location and sea-surface temperature. Other configurations can collect data such as atmospheric pressure, salinity, wind, or waves, but no single sensor package should be assumed for every drifter. - WHY YOU NEED MOOCY DRIFT SOCK?:MOOCY makes drift sock for fishing boat in all sizes (24''-53'') to match any technique and boat size. The drift control harness buoy features stainless steel clip that makes securing your drift sock to the boat simple, and allows for a quick release of the sock to make way for fighting a trophy fish. The blaze-orange Buoy is easily seen and retrieved.
- IDEAL FOR FISH:This drift sock will allow you to fish with peace of mind that your drift sock will stand up to the nastiest wind or waves.perfect for lake river ocean fishing.
- DURABLE MATERIAL:The construction is solid. Holding in your hands the sea anchor just plain out feels durable and strong.Tough PVC rip-stop fabric with reinforced webbing strap.
- SUITABLE SIZE FOR USE AND STORAGE:MOOCY drift anchors are specifically designed to provide enough resistance to help stabilize your boat; the right size ensures efficiency without unintentionally impeding your boat's movement or causing inconvenience; in addition, the compact size allows you to store and carry them easily and conveniently; check size information before ordering!
- WIDE APPLICATION: These trolling sock for fishing boat are practical and functional and can be used in a variety of situations such as inflatable boats, fishing boats, pontoon kayaks, sailboats, motorboats, jet skis and other power boats
Positioning methods vary too. NOAA’s AOML Data Assembly Center quality-controls position and temperature reports and produces records interpolated to six-hour intervals. Position sources include Argos Doppler calculations and GPS on Iridium and some Argos drifters. The processed records let researchers work with consistent tracks, while the raw observations come from the instrument’s reporting system. (NOAA AOML Data Assembly Center)
Where are drifting buoys found?
Across the world’s open oceans
The broad answer is that Global Drifter Program instruments are deployed throughout the world’s open oceans. The program aims for a roughly 5° by 5° grid of satellite-tracked drifters, coordinating deployments with national and international partners. Its overview describes an array of about 1,300 instruments and approximately 1,000 deployments per year to maintain it; these are approximate program figures, not a live count. Locations change as buoys move, are recovered, or stop reporting. NOAA’s Global Drifter Program page provides an updated map for current positions.

In regional research deployments
Researchers also release drifters in a chosen region to trace a current, river discharge, or other feature. NOAA has documented South Florida releases near the mouth of the Shark River, Riley’s Hump in the Dry Tortugas, the Caloosahatchee River discharge near Charlotte Harbor, Cape Romano, and Pulley Ridge. These are historical examples: NOAA says routine South Florida Program field deployments have been suspended since 2012. That status applies to the regional program, not to the Global Drifter Program as a whole. (NOAA South Florida Program)
A separate Gulf of Mexico study deployed 36 drifters in pairs in 2010. Their trajectories mapped features including a warm ring and the Loop Current, helping investigators examine where oil could be carried. This is an example of a past study, not the number or status of Gulf drifters today. (NOAA Surface Drifter Observations)

Why do scientists use drifting buoys?
Drifters provide direct observations of upper-ocean movement and surface conditions. NOAA identifies weather forecasting and ocean-state estimation among the Global Drifter Program’s goals. Because a moving drifter traces the path of the water layer it follows, its track can also help scientists study the dispersal of floating material, including oil, marine debris, and larval fish. A track is an observation of movement along one route; it does not by itself map every current or predict the exact path of all material in the ocean. (NOAA Global Drifter Program)

“Drifting buoy” describes a broad class of instruments, not one identical model. When comparing them, the useful distinctions are the depth and design of the drogue, the positioning and transmission system, and the sensors installed. Those choices determine what part of the ocean the instrument follows and what data it can report. For example, the 15-meter drogue used in the standard Global Drifter Program design differs from the 25- or 40-meter configurations described by NOAA EcoFOCI.
