A computer driver is the software interface that lets Windows and your applications communicate with a hardware device. When a driver is missing, damaged, incompatible or incorrectly installed, the device may disappear, show a warning icon, stop working or cause crashes. Start with Windows Update, then use Device Manager to identify the exact device and problem code before reinstalling or replacing anything.
What a computer driver does
Windows cannot operate every keyboard, graphics adapter, audio chip, Wi-Fi card, printer, storage controller or USB device directly. Each device exposes its own commands and capabilities. A driver translates Windows requests into commands the device understands and returns the device’s status to Windows and applications. Microsoft describes drivers as translators between Windows and a device.

A driver package normally comes from the hardware maker or another software provider. Providers can submit packages to Microsoft’s Windows Hardware program for testing and certification. Windows Update is therefore the first supported place to look for a suitable certified package. Certification helps establish compatibility with a particular Windows release, but it does not mean every driver works with every model or configuration.
Drivers are tied to a specific device, model, operating-system edition and sometimes hardware revision. A desktop’s audio driver, for example, is not interchangeable with its Wi-Fi driver. Even two computers with the same processor may require different motherboard, network or graphics packages. Identifying the exact device is more reliable than searching by a generic description such as “sound driver.”

How to recognize a driver problem
Symptoms vary according to the affected hardware. Common signs include:
- A device is absent from an application or from Windows settings.
- Audio, wireless networking, Bluetooth, printing, display output, USB connectivity or storage access stops working.
- Windows shows a yellow exclamation mark beside a device in Device Manager.
- A device works intermittently, resets, disconnects or performs with reduced functionality.
- The problem begins immediately after a Windows or driver update.
- Windows reports that it cannot start the device, cannot find a driver, or has stopped the device to prevent damage.
- A game, video application or other program crashes when it uses a particular hardware feature.
A yellow exclamation mark means Windows has detected a problem with that device. Open the device’s Properties dialog to see the status message and numeric problem code; the code is more useful than the icon alone.
Before changing a driver
Record the current state so that you can reverse a change and describe the issue accurately if you need support.
- Write down what stopped working, when it started and whether the failure affects one program or all of Windows.
- Note the hardware category and any model, manufacturer or device name shown in Device Manager.
- Capture the Driver tab’s provider, date and version, plus the message on the General tab.
- Disconnect only unnecessary external devices. Leave the affected device connected so Windows can detect it during diagnosis.
- Save important work and, for a critical machine, create a restore point or another recovery backup before removing a working driver.
Use an administrator account for installation and removal. Download packages only from Windows Update or the identified manufacturer’s official support site; third-party download mirrors can supply the wrong model or a modified installer.
Step 1: Install the supported updates through Windows Update
Windows Update should be your baseline because it evaluates packages for the installed Windows release and can install certified updates automatically.

- In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and allow all applicable updates to finish.
- Restart even if Windows does not immediately require it. A driver may not become active until the next boot.
- Test the affected device before making another change. If the issue is gone, record the installed driver version and stop.
Optional driver packages are separate from the normal update list. On Windows 11, look under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. On Windows 10, the label is generally View optional updates under Windows Update. Menu wording can vary by release. Microsoft’s distribution rules changed starting with Windows 10 version 2004: Device Manager searches the local computer first, while optional manual driver packages are exposed through Windows Update’s Optional updates area.
Step 2: Diagnose the device in Device Manager
Device Manager is the main diagnostic surface for driver issues. It shows the device type, status, manufacturer and driver information, and it identifies problems with warning icons.

- Select Start, type Device Manager, and open the result.
- Expand the category that matches the symptom, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Network adapters, Bluetooth, Printers, Universal Serial Bus controllers or Storage controllers.
- Look for a yellow exclamation mark, a down-arrow, an unknown device or a device that has disappeared from its expected category.
- Right-click the device and select Properties. On General, read the status and problem code. On Driver, note the provider, date, version, rollback availability and uninstall controls. On Details, inspect identifiers when you must distinguish similar devices. On Events, review recent installation or configuration entries.
Do not guess from the category name alone. An unknown device may be an internal card reader, chipset component or peripheral. The Properties and Details tabs give you the identifiers needed to find the correct package.
Step 3: Update one device manually
After identifying the device, use Device Manager’s update workflow.
- In the device’s Properties dialog, open the Driver tab and select Update Driver. You can also right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers. Windows checks its available local package and, on supported current versions, can offer a route to search Windows Update if no suitable package is found.
- If you downloaded an official package, choose Browse my computer for drivers, select the folder containing the extracted files and continue. Do not point Windows at an unrelated package merely because the device name looks similar.
- Restart and test the hardware. Check the Driver tab again to verify which provider and version is active.
If Device Manager says the best driver is already installed, that means it found no better matching package in the search locations; it does not prove that the driver is healthy. Check Optional updates and then the manufacturer’s support page if the symptom continues.

Step 4: Roll back, uninstall and reinstall
Roll back after a recent update
If the device worked until a driver change, open Device Manager > device Properties > Driver and select Roll Back Driver when the button is available. Windows keeps this option only when an earlier package is present. Choose a reason, confirm, restart and test. If the button is unavailable, use the uninstall-and-reinstall procedure instead of forcing an unrelated older package.
Reinstall a device
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you have a replacement package or a reliable Windows Update path; removing the only network driver can leave the computer offline.
- Restart Windows. Plug-and-play detection may reinstall the device automatically.
- If it does not return, open Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes, and wait for detection.
- Run Windows Update or install the manufacturer’s package, then restart and test.
Microsoft documents uninstalling and rescanning as the standard response for Code 18 and similar reinstall cases. A problem code that remains after a clean reinstall points toward a wrong package, a blocked installation, a connection issue or failing hardware rather than a simple stale entry.
Step 5: Get the exact package from the manufacturer
Use the manufacturer’s official support page when Windows Update has no suitable package or when the vendor’s package contains a device-specific fix. Start with the computer’s exact model and Windows edition. For a separately installed component, identify the card or peripheral model and revision from its label, purchase documentation or Device Manager’s Details tab.
- Confirm the model, Windows version and whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit where the support page asks for it.
- Download the package listed for that exact model and operating system. Prefer a package with a clear version and release date over a generic “driver updater” download.
- Read the vendor’s installation notes. Some installers require the old package to be removed first; others expect the existing driver to remain in place.
- Close hardware-intensive applications, run the installer as an administrator, and restart when prompted.
- Return to Device Manager to verify the provider and version, then test the original symptom.
For a branded laptop or desktop, the computer maker’s package is often the right first choice because it may include firmware-specific settings. For an add-in card or peripheral, use that component maker’s support page. If the vendor does not publish a package for your Windows release, do not substitute one for a different model without confirming compatibility.
Step 6: Fix Windows Update when it cannot install a driver
A failed driver update may be an update-service problem rather than a device problem. Work through these checks in order:

- Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings and apply any recommended repair.
- Verify a stable internet connection and sign in with administrator rights.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB drives, docks, printers and other external hardware while the update runs. Leave the device you are repairing connected.
- Check that the system drive has free space and that the date, time and time zone are correct.
- Restart, check Windows Update again, and clear the update cache only when the troubleshooter or Microsoft’s instructions indicate that the cache is damaged. Record any error before clearing it.
- Repair component-store and system-file problems from an elevated Command Prompt. Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, wait for it to complete, then runsfc /scannow. Restart and retry the update.
Microsoft lists incompatible network or graphics drivers as one possible cause of update error 0xC1900101. If that error appears, note which device was recently changed, remove unnecessary peripherals, install the exact manufacturer package and retry rather than repeatedly running the same failed upgrade.
Step 7: Use problem codes and logs for persistent failures
When the basic workflow fails, preserve the evidence instead of repeatedly uninstalling drivers. In Device Manager, record the complete problem code and message from Properties > General. Also record the entries on the Events tab and any error shown by Windows Update.
Microsoft’s installation troubleshooting guidance uses Device Manager codes and installation logs to distinguish a missing package from a configuration, permission or hardware-detection failure. Provide those artifacts to the computer or component manufacturer if you request support. A precise code can change the remedy: one code may call for a reinstall, while another indicates that Windows cannot start the device or cannot locate required resources.

The device is not listed at all
In Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes. Check other categories for an unknown device and inspect its Details identifiers. For an external device, reseat the cable, try a known-good port and remove an unnecessary hub. If Windows still cannot detect it, the problem may be the connection, power, firmware or hardware itself rather than a Windows driver.

Verify that the package matches the exact model and Windows edition. Check whether Windows Update replaced it with another package after the restart. If the same code remains with the correct package, stop cycling through drivers and use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or support process.

The problem affects only one application
Check the application’s own hardware or audio settings and test the device in another Windows application. A driver change is justified when Windows reports a device error or multiple applications show the same failure; an application-specific crash may have a different cause.
The computer cannot connect to the internet after removing a network driver
Use another computer or a phone to obtain the exact network package from the computer maker or adapter maker, copy it by USB, and install it locally. Keep a backup of essential network packages before uninstalling one on a system that depends on Wi-Fi.
Are driver-updater utilities safe, and should you use one?
Windows Update and the hardware manufacturer’s support page should remain the baseline. They provide the strongest source trust and make it easier to match a package to a specific model. Device Manager gives the best diagnosis because it exposes the device, status, provider, version and problem code.

Treat a recommendation as a candidate package, verify the device identity yourself, and keep a backup before applying a batch of changes. Avoid any utility that hides the source of a driver, installs unrelated software or claims that every crash has a driver cause.

Practical safety rules
- Install one targeted change at a time when diagnosing a failure. Batch updates make it harder to identify the change that helped or caused the problem.
- Keep the current provider, version and problem code before replacing a driver.
- Do not delete a network, storage or display driver without a recovery path.
- Restart after installation, rollback or removal; many changes are not active until boot.
- Use Windows Update or the official hardware maker for downloads, and avoid packages that do not identify the supported model.
- If a driver update fixes the symptom, record the working version so you can restore it later.

Update one device, roll back a recent change when possible, or uninstall and rescan before installing the exact manufacturer package. If the error survives a correct reinstall, the recorded code and installation logs will tell you whether to pursue Windows configuration, a vendor-specific fix or a hardware repair.
