What Are Clonal Animals, and How Do They Reproduce?

Clonal animals are animals that produce genetically identical or nearly identical descendants without the usual genetic contribution of two parents. They do this in several ways: an individual can split and regenerate, grow a bud, shed a body fragment that develops into a new animal, or produce an offspring from an unfertilized egg. “Clonal” describes the genetic relationship among the animals; it does not name one single reproductive process.

The distinction matters because asexual reproduction is broader than perfect cloning. Some asexual mechanisms preserve a genome almost exactly, while others involve chromosome changes, recombination within the egg, or mutations. The resulting offspring can therefore be identical, near-identical, or genetically different in limited ways.

What “clonal animal” means

A clone is an organism genetically identical to another organism, or a lineage of genetically identical organisms descended asexually from one ancestor. In practice, natural clones are rarely guaranteed to remain perfectly identical forever: mutations can arise as cells divide, and some reproductive mechanisms alter or reshuffle chromosomes.

Clonality is therefore a relationship, not a body plan. A clone may be a free-living individual, a new member of a colony, one of several animals produced by a divided parent, or one of many offspring developing from unfertilized eggs. The word does not imply that every clone is female, that every clone lives attached to its parent, or that every asexual offspring is an exact copy.

Asexual reproduction means reproduction without the usual fusion of sex cells from two parents. It includes cloning processes such as fission and budding, but also parthenogenesis and other mechanisms that may not produce a mathematically perfect copy of the parent.

How clonal animals reproduce

Mechanism What happens Typical examples What happens to the offspring
Fission One animal divides into two or more parts; each part may regenerate missing structures. Planarian flatworms; some sea anemones and sea cucumbers Parts usually separate and become independent animals.
Budding A new animal grows as an outgrowth from the parent. Hydra; some corals The bud may detach or remain connected in a colony.
Fragmentation A body fragment becomes a complete individual when the species and fragment contain the necessary regenerative capacity. Some sponges, cnidarians, flatworms, echinoderms and annelids; some sea stars The original body may be damaged or divided, while the fragment regenerates.
Parthenogenesis An egg develops without fertilization by sperm. Water fleas, rotifers, aphids, stick insects, ants, wasps, bees and some reptiles, amphibians and fish The offspring may be haploid or diploid and is not necessarily a perfect copy of its mother.
Polyembryony One fertilized egg splits into multiple embryos. Discussed among clonal or quasi-clonal vertebrate systems The embryos are genetically identical siblings, but the process begins with fertilization.

Fission: dividing into regenerating animals

In fission, an animal divides and the resulting sections regenerate structures they do not contain. A planarian flatworm, for example, can be divided across its body; each viable section can rebuild a complete animal. Some sea anemones and sea cucumbers also use forms of division followed by regeneration.

Fission is not simply “an animal breaking.” The division must occur in a species whose tissues can reorganize and rebuild the missing body regions. The exact direction and location of division vary by species, and a damaged animal will not automatically produce two healthy clones.

Budding: a new individual grows from the parent

Budding starts with an outgrowth on the parent’s body. Cells multiply in the bud as it develops the structures needed for independent life. In hydra, a bud eventually detaches and lives as a separate animal. In some corals, buds remain attached, creating or enlarging a colony of genetically related modules.

Because a bud begins as part of the parent, it is usually genetically very similar to the parent. Continued cell division can still introduce mutations, and a colonial bud may remain physiologically integrated with older parts rather than becoming a solitary animal.

Fragmentation: viable pieces become new animals

Fragmentation occurs when a piece of an animal grows into a complete individual. It is common among certain sponges, cnidarians, flatworms, echinoderms and annelids, and some sea stars can regenerate an entire animal from a sufficiently complete fragment.

Fragmentation and fission overlap in everyday descriptions, but they are not interchangeable. Fission is an organized division of the body into parts that regenerate. Fragmentation emphasizes that a detached piece can become a new individual. In both cases, success depends on the species and on whether the fragment contains the tissues or organizing regions needed for regeneration. A random piece of an ordinary animal will not become a clone.

Parthenogenesis: development from an unfertilized egg

Parthenogenesis begins with an egg, but no sperm fertilizes it. The egg activates and develops through a species-specific cellular process. Parthenogenetic reproduction occurs in invertebrates such as water fleas, rotifers, aphids, stick insects, ants, wasps and bees, and in some vertebrates, including certain reptiles, amphibians and fish.

The offspring’s genetics depend on how the egg’s chromosomes are handled. It can be haploid, carrying one chromosome set, or diploid, carrying two. In some species, the egg’s own chromosome copies are combined or duplicated; in others, meiosis is modified or suppressed. Those differences determine how closely the offspring resembles its mother.

For that reason, “parthenogenetic” does not automatically mean “a perfect female clone.” Some lineages produce daughters that are effectively clonal apart from new mutations, while others produce offspring with reduced genetic variation or with chromosome combinations that differ from the mother. Matthew K. Fujita, Sonal Singhal, Tuliana O. Brunes and Jose A. Maldonado define parthenogenesis in their 2020 vertebrate review as “asexual reproduction without any required participation from males.” The definition identifies the absence of required male participation; it does not claim that every outcome is genetically identical.

Clonal reproduction versus sexual reproduction

The key difference is whether reproduction can be completed by one individual and whether offspring inherit a newly combined genome from two parents.

Question Asexual or clonal mode Sexual mode
How many parents are required? One individual can be sufficient; sperm is not required in parthenogenesis. Usually involves the fusion of reproductive cells from two parents.
How does the offspring begin? As a divided body, a bud, a regenerative fragment or an unfertilized egg. As a fertilized egg formed by the union of gametes.
How similar is the offspring? Often genetically identical or near-identical, but mutations and chromosome processes can create differences. Usually genetically recombined, producing a new combination of parental variants.
How quickly can reproduction occur? One individual can reproduce without finding a mate, and some systems can produce many offspring rapidly. Finding a mate and producing gametes can add time and energy costs.
What is the main evolutionary trade-off? Efficient multiplication when conditions are favorable and stable, but often less standing genetic variation. More genetic combinations that may help a population respond to changing conditions, at the cost of requiring mating and investment in two-parent reproduction.

These are broad evolutionary tendencies, not rules that make one strategy universally superior. Asexual lineages can persist for long periods, and sexual populations can also be vulnerable when conditions change. The ecological setting, mutation rate, population size and life cycle all matter.

Are clonal animals always female?

No. Some famous vertebrate clonal lineages consist entirely of females, but clonality itself does not require femaleness. The sex of an asexual offspring depends on the species’ genetics and reproductive system. Some parthenogenetic systems produce only females; others can produce males, both sexes, or different offspring types under different conditions.

James C. Avise’s 2015 review reported approximately 100 all-female vertebrate “species” or biotypes in which females produce daughters genetically identical to one another and to their mother, apart from new mutations. Avise placed “species” in quotation marks because many of these taxa may not satisfy the usual biological-species definition. The figure is an approximate count from that review, not a current exhaustive census of every clonal vertebrate.

Clonal and quasi-clonal vertebrates

Vertebrate clonality is more varied than a simple mother-to-daughter copy. Avise’s review discusses several systems in which whole or partial genomes are transmitted without ordinary sexual recombination.

Gynogenesis

In gynogenesis, sperm is needed to activate development, but the sperm genome does not normally contribute to the offspring’s inherited nuclear DNA. The egg supplies the developing individual’s genome. Because the sperm’s role is activation rather than ordinary genetic fusion, gynogenesis is often described as a clonal or quasi-clonal reproductive mode, depending on the species and the details of chromosome transmission.

Hybridogenesis and kleptogenesis

Hybridogenetic and kleptogenetic systems involve more complicated genome histories. A lineage may transmit one parental genome clonally while discarding, replacing or acquiring another genome during reproduction. These animals cannot be described accurately as simple exact copies of one parent; their inheritance is partial, alternating or dependent on interactions with other species.

Polyembryony

Polyembryony occurs when one fertilized egg divides into genetically identical embryos. The resulting siblings are clones of one another, but this is not parthenogenesis: fertilization happened first. It is best understood as within-generation clonality produced by embryo splitting rather than asexual development from an unfertilized egg.

Why clonality can be advantageous

  • No mate is required. A solitary individual can establish a lineage where partners are scarce.
  • Successful genetics can be copied. If an animal is well suited to a stable environment, its descendants retain much of that same genetic setup.
  • Population growth can be fast. Budding, fission and some parthenogenetic cycles can produce many descendants without the delay of mating.
  • Colonies can expand efficiently. Coral buds and similar modules allow one successful genotype to occupy more space while remaining connected.

Those benefits come with costs. A lineage that produces near-identical offspring may have fewer genetic combinations available when temperature, food supply, disease pressure or habitat changes. A mutation harmful in one individual can also be inherited by many descendants. Sexual reproduction can generate combinations that help populations adapt, although it requires additional energy and often a second parent.

Common misconceptions and precise wording

  • “Asexual” means “perfect clone.” Not always. Asexual reproduction includes parthenogenesis and other processes that can produce haploid, diploid or genetically varied descendants.
  • “Fission” and “fragmentation” are identical. They overlap, but fission describes division of the organism, while fragmentation emphasizes a detached piece regenerating into an individual.
  • Any fragment can grow into an animal. Regeneration is species-specific and depends on the fragment’s size, tissues and developmental capacity.
  • Every parthenogenetic offspring is female. Sex outcomes vary among species.
  • Every clonal animal lives alone. Buds may remain attached, and genetically identical modules can form colonies.
  • Clones never differ. New mutations and the details of chromosome transmission can make natural clones near-identical rather than absolutely identical.

How to identify the reproductive mode in an example

  1. Check what starts the new individual. A divided body indicates fission; a detached piece indicates fragmentation; an outgrowth indicates budding; an unfertilized egg indicates parthenogenesis.
  2. Ask whether fertilization occurred. If one fertilized egg split into identical embryos, the case is polyembryony rather than parthenogenesis.
  3. Separate genetic identity from reproductive mechanism. Determine whether the offspring is an exact clone, a near-clone, a recombined or partially inherited genome, or simply a genetically identical sibling.
  4. Check whether offspring separate. A bud may become independent, while coral buds or other modules may remain in a colony.
  5. Look for species-specific qualifications. Do not generalize from one planarian, insect or reptile to all animals; the chromosome process and sex outcome can differ substantially.
