Claude Artifacts are substantial, self-contained outputs that Claude opens in a dedicated window beside your conversation. Instead of leaving a long document, code sample, or interface buried in chat, Claude gives the result its own editable, reusable workspace. You can inspect the underlying code, request revisions in natural language, switch among saved versions, copy the content, download it, or share a particular version.
An Artifact can be a document, code snippet, single-page website, SVG graphic, diagram, flowchart, or interactive React component. Some can also include limited Claude-powered text behavior. They are best understood as a way to turn a conversation into a durable working object—not as a separate physical product or an unrestricted application-hosting platform.

What makes an Artifact different from a normal Claude reply?
Anthropic describes the feature this way: “Claude can share substantial, standalone content with you in a dedicated window separate from the main conversation.” That separate window is the key distinction. A normal reply is primarily a message in a conversation thread. An Artifact is content you are expected to work on after Claude generates it.

| Question | Ordinary chat response | Claude Artifact |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the result live? | Inside the conversation stream | In a dedicated Artifact window beside the conversation |
| What is it suited to? | Explanations, short answers, brainstorming and one-off snippets | Substantial documents, complete code, visual work and interactive prototypes |
| How do revisions work? | You ask for another reply, often creating a long chain of alternatives | Follow-up requests update the Artifact and create selectable versions |
| Can you reuse the result? | You can copy text from the message | You can inspect, copy and download a self-contained output |
| Can another person use it? | They normally need the conversation or pasted content | A shared Artifact can be viewed and, where allowed, interacted with or customized |
The output is still generated through a Claude conversation. The Artifact window does not mean Claude has created a permanently hosted service, connected to every outside system, or granted unrestricted access to Anthropic’s application programming interface (API).

What can Claude create as an Artifact?
Documents and structured content
Ask for a substantial memo, lesson plan, project brief, outline, checklist or other standalone document when you want to edit the result over several turns. The Artifact gives the document a stable place while you ask Claude to change its tone, reorganize sections, add examples or adapt it for another audience.
Code and single-page websites
Claude can place a code snippet or a complete small web page in the Artifact pane. A single-page site can be useful for a prototype, a demonstration, a draft interface or a self-contained teaching example. You can ask for a change such as “replace the table with cards” or “add a filter,” then review the revised code in the updated version.
SVG images, diagrams and flowcharts
Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) Artifacts can represent illustrations, icons, process diagrams and flowcharts as editable markup rather than a flat screenshot. This is useful when you need to inspect labels, change colors, move elements or reuse the graphic elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInteractive React components
Claude can produce an interactive component built with React, such as a calculator, quiz, dashboard mock-up or data-exploration interface. Interactivity makes the Artifact more than a static answer, but it does not automatically provide the database, authentication, deployment pipeline or external services that a production application needs.
How to create an Artifact: the complete workflow
- Describe the outcome. Start with the problem and the audience, not just a file type. State what the result should help someone do, the information it must contain and any constraints such as length, visual style or technology.
- Ask Claude to create it. Direct prompts such as
Can you create this for me?orLet's build this now.are valid starting points. A more specific request produces a more useful first version: Create a one-page project-status dashboard with sections for risks, milestones and owners. Use sample data and make each status easy to scan. - Review the dedicated window. Claude places substantial standalone content in the Artifact pane. Read the rendered result as well as the source when source code is available. Check that the structure, calculations, labels and assumptions match your request.
- Request focused changes. Continue in the conversation with concrete edits. Examples include “add a table of contents,” “make the buttons keyboard accessible,” “change the chart to show monthly totals,” or “rewrite the introduction for a nontechnical reader.” Keeping each request focused makes it easier to identify what changed.
- Inspect the underlying content. For code, SVG and interactive work, open the source or code view when available. Look for hard-coded values, missing states, incorrect formulas, inaccessible controls and dependencies that the prototype assumes but does not provide.
- Use the version selector. Anthropic’s documented workflow creates a new version when you edit an Artifact. Use the selector to revisit an earlier version, compare a design direction or recover content that a later instruction replaced.
- Copy or download the finished output. When the result is ready, copy the content into your own editor or download the file. Treat that exported copy as the handoff point if you need source control, testing, deployment or long-term storage outside Claude.
How to write prompts that produce better Artifacts
Specify the job before the format
“Make a website” leaves major decisions to Claude. Explain the user, task, data and success criteria first: Build a self-contained expense splitter for three people. It should accept line items, show each person’s share and display a clear total. Use sample values and explain the calculation in the interface.

Set boundaries for a prototype
If you do not want a production-style system, say so. Ask for mock data, no login, no server and a single self-contained file. This prevents a prototype request from being interpreted as a request for infrastructure that Artifacts cannot supply.
Request test cases and accessible behavior
For an interactive Artifact, ask Claude to include empty states, invalid-input messages, keyboard navigation, readable contrast and a few test scenarios. These requests make omissions visible before you share the prototype.

Change one dimension at a time
Separate content edits from visual edits and functional edits. For example, first ask Claude to correct the calculations, then ask it to restyle the layout. Distinct prompts make version history easier to understand and reduce accidental regressions.
AI-powered Artifacts: what the embedded AI can and cannot do
Claude supports a mode in which an Artifact can use a limited text-based completion capability. To use it, the creator enables Create AI powered artifacts in settings, describes the desired behavior and iterates through prompts as with any other Artifact.
This feature allows a shared prototype to respond to text in a way that feels like an AI application. A person using that AI behavior authenticates with their own Claude account. Their use is charged against their own Claude limits rather than the creator’s limits, according to Anthropic’s guidance.

| Capability | AI-powered Artifact behavior |
|---|---|
| Text generation | Limited text-based completion capability provided within the Artifact environment |
| Viewer authentication | People using the AI feature sign in with their own Claude account |
| Usage accounting | The viewer’s use counts against that viewer’s limits, not the creator’s |
| Third-party API calls | Not supported |
| Persistent storage | Not supported |
| Full Anthropic API access | Not available through the Artifact environment |
These restrictions matter when deciding whether an Artifact is sufficient. It can demonstrate an idea, gather feedback or show a lightweight interaction. It cannot, by itself, become a service that securely calls your payment provider, writes customer records to a durable database or uses the full Anthropic API with your production credentials.
What happens when you share an Artifact?
Public links
Anthropic’s help documentation describes discovery and publishing for Free, Pro and Max users. A public Artifact can be viewed and interacted with by people who have its link. Advanced actions—such as customizing the content or using AI-powered capabilities—require a Claude account.
A published link points to the specific version that was shared. Anyone who has that link can access it until you unpublish it. Before distributing a URL, verify that you selected the intended version and that the content contains no private information.
Customization by a viewer
A Claude user who receives a shared Artifact can start a new conversation with the existing content and customize it. This creates a new working context for that person; it does not mean the viewer can silently edit the original Artifact in place.
Claude for Work sharing
Work accounts have organization-scoped sharing controls rather than the same public-link model. The exact options depend on the organization’s settings. If an Artifact was created from a Project, access to the Artifact also depends on access to that Project.

Sharing checklist
- Open the exact version you intend to publish.
- Remove credentials, personal data, confidential text and private sample records.
- Decide whether the audience needs only viewing, interaction, customization or AI behavior.
- For a Work account, confirm that the recipients belong to the permitted organization or Project.
- Unpublish the link when it should no longer be accessible.
Artifact prototype versus a production application
An Artifact is a fast path from an idea to a demonstrable result. A production application is an operational system with infrastructure, security and maintenance obligations. The two can share code or design ideas, but they are not interchangeable.
| Concern | Artifact prototype | Production application |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Explore, explain, demonstrate or gather feedback | Serve real users reliably over time |
| Data | Typically self-contained or sample data; persistent storage is not available for AI-powered Artifacts | Requires a designed database, backups, retention rules and data protection |
| Integrations | Cannot make external API calls from the AI-powered Artifact environment | Needs authenticated, monitored integrations and secrets management |
| AI access | Limited text completion inside the Artifact environment | Requires an appropriate API architecture, quotas, logging and error handling |
| Deployment | Shared through Claude’s Artifact controls or exported for further work | Needs hosting, domains, releases, rollback procedures and monitoring |
| Security and compliance | Sharing scope is controlled by the available Claude account settings | Requires deliberate identity, authorization, auditing and compliance decisions |
When an Artifact proves useful, move the design or code into a proper development environment before adding production data, credentials or customer-facing dependencies. Anthropic positions Artifacts as suitable for prototyping and demonstrations and recommends a more robust implementation when an app needs capabilities beyond the Artifact environment.
Availability and account considerations
Anthropic announced general availability on August 27, 2024, after reporting tens of millions of Artifacts created since the feature preview began in June 2024. Those figures describe the launch period, not a current usage counter.
Plan names, publishing controls and discovery behavior can change. Anthropic’s current help pages describe public sharing for Free, Pro and Max accounts and organization-scoped sharing for Claude for Work, but the controls shown in your account are the authoritative guide. Check the sharing panel and your administrator’s policy before promising a recipient that a particular action will be available.
Common problems and practical fixes
“Claude gave me code, but no Artifact window appeared”
The request may have been interpreted as a short code answer rather than a substantial standalone deliverable. Ask explicitly for an Artifact and describe the complete output you want, such as a self-contained page or component. Very small snippets may remain ordinary chat content.
Best Value
“The prototype looks right but does not retain data”
Visual state in a prototype is not the same as persistent storage. Export the design and implement a database or other approved storage layer in a separate application when data must survive sessions.
“A shared viewer cannot use the AI feature”
AI-powered interactions require the viewer to authenticate with a Claude account. A person who can open a public link may still lack the account access needed for advanced actions.
“The wrong version was published”
Because a published link is tied to a specific shared version, return to the version selector, open the intended revision and publish that version. Unpublish the earlier link if it should no longer be reachable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“A Work colleague cannot open the Artifact”
Check organization sharing rules and, if the Artifact came from a Project, verify that the colleague has access to that Project. Public-link assumptions do not override Work account boundaries.
When Claude Artifacts are the right tool
Choose an Artifact when the output is substantial, needs several rounds of editing, benefits from a dedicated view, or should be copied, downloaded, demonstrated or shared. It is especially effective for turning a rough request into a document, visual explanation, code prototype or interactive proof of concept without first setting up a full development stack.
Choose a separate production implementation when the project requires external services, durable user data, unrestricted API calls, formal authentication, deployment controls, compliance guarantees or long-term operational support. The most useful mental model is simple: an Artifact is a versioned, shareable working object produced through Claude—not a replacement for the infrastructure behind a finished application.
