CarPlay entitlements are Apple-controlled permissions that determine which apps may present a driving interface in CarPlay. An iPhone app must fit an approved category, receive the matching managed capability after Apple review, and implement the CarPlay scene, templates and APIs allowed for that category. Plugging an iPhone into a compatible vehicle does not turn the car screen into a general-purpose mirror of the phone.
That distinction explains both sides of the issue: why an installed app may be absent from CarPlay, and why developers cannot simply add a CarPlay icon through an Xcode checkbox. CarPlay is a separate, safety-constrained application environment with its own entitlement, signing, user-interface and review requirements.

What a CarPlay entitlement actually is
An entitlement is a capability recorded in an app’s code-signing and provisioning configuration. In practical terms, it is Apple’s permission for an app to use a defined CarPlay experience. It is not a preference that a user can enable in Settings, and it is not automatically granted because an app already has audio, navigation or communication features on the iPhone.
Apple requires a developer to request the appropriate capability through its CarPlay contact process and agree to the CarPlay Entitlement Addendum. Apple then evaluates the application against predefined criteria. If the request is approved, Apple adds the managed capability to the developer account. The developer can update the App ID and provisioning profile, add the capability to the project’s entitlements, and submit the resulting app for the normal App Store process plus CarPlay-specific review.

The entitlement is therefore both a policy gate and a technical gate. Without the approved capability in the signing chain, the app cannot legitimately use the protected CarPlay APIs or appear as an eligible CarPlay app, even if its ordinary iPhone code is otherwise complete.
Which CarPlay categories Apple recognizes
CarPlay does not expose one unrestricted app mode. Apple assigns capabilities by the job an app performs while the driver is connected. The principal entitlement keys are:

The category list is important because an app cannot claim a broader entitlement simply by describing itself differently. A general shopping, social, finance, video or productivity app has no corresponding general-purpose CarPlay entitlement in this model. Even an app that performs a qualifying task must use the templates and interaction patterns Apple permits for that category.

Why an ordinary iPhone app cannot just appear on the car screen
CarPlay is not a second iPhone display
When an iPhone connects to a vehicle, CarPlay launches a vehicle-specific environment. It does not stream the phone’s complete interface to the dashboard. Apple controls navigation, touch targets, text presentation and the set of actions exposed while the car is moving. That design prevents an arbitrary app from placing dense feeds, unrestricted web pages, games or other phone-only screens in front of the driver.
The permission is reviewed before code can use it
The developer must show that the app belongs to an eligible category and accept additional contractual terms. Apple’s review of the request is separate from the user’s decision to install the app. A user cannot override a rejected or missing entitlement by changing an iPhone or vehicle setting.
The APIs are deliberately segmented
CarPlay templates expose only the controls relevant to an approved use case. Apple marks audio templates as exclusive to apps with the audio entitlement, navigation symbols as exclusive to navigation apps, and point-of-interest or information templates as exclusive to parking, charging or quick-ordering apps. A developer cannot assemble a menu from a category it was not approved to use.

The safety rationale has limits to what Apple publishes
The constrained templates, short interaction paths and vehicle-specific review clearly support safer driver interaction, but Apple’s public documentation does not publish a numeric safety threshold, acceptance rate or formula that predicts approval. Treat statements about safety as the rationale for the controlled design, not as a promise that an app will be accepted.

A separate CarPlay scene
The app declares a CarPlay scene in Info.plist. That scene has its own lifecycle and delegate rather than reusing the phone’s view-controller hierarchy unchanged. The usual entry point is an implementation of CPTemplateApplicationSceneDelegate, which receives the CarPlay interface connection and supplies the approved template hierarchy.
Templates and an interface controller
Most categories build their dashboard experience from CarPlay templates. The app creates lists, grids, tabs, now-playing views, search screens or point-of-interest details using Apple’s template APIs, then presents them through the CarPlay interface controller. The templates impose consistent typography, navigation behavior and interaction limits across vehicles.

The navigation exception
Navigation apps are the only category with access to the CarPlay-managed window used to draw map content. A navigation implementation still uses CarPlay templates for destination selection, search and guidance controls, but it receives this additional map surface for rendering its map. Other categories do not receive that window and cannot use it as a back door for a custom dashboard.
System frameworks extend, rather than replace, entitlement rules
- SiriKit: supports voice-driven messaging and other intents that fit the app’s approved communication or media workflow.
- CallKit: can provide system calling integration for VoIP applications, commonly alongside SiriKit, but does not itself grant a CarPlay entitlement.
- MapKit: supplies mapping services for navigation implementations; using MapKit alone does not make an app a CarPlay navigation app.
How developers obtain CarPlay access
The following sequence describes the practical path from an iPhone project to a reviewable CarPlay app.

- Identify one qualifying category. Define the user task that occurs in the vehicle and match it to audio, communication, navigation, EV charging, parking or quick food ordering. Do not start by selecting an entitlement key based only on a desired screen.
- Submit the request through Apple’s CarPlay contact process. Provide the app and business details Apple requests, then accept the CarPlay Entitlement Addendum. The entitlement is not available for unrestricted self-service use before this step.
- Pass Apple’s predefined criteria. Apple reviews the application. Approval adds the managed capability to the developer account; a normal App Store listing or a compatible head unit does not substitute for this decision.
- Update signing resources. Enable the approved capability for the App ID, refresh the provisioning profile, and make sure the project’s signing configuration can carry the entitlement. A profile created before approval may not contain the new capability.
- Add the entitlement in Xcode. Enable the category capability and verify the generated
Entitlements.plistcontains the exact key Apple granted. The key must match the approved category; inventing a similar key will not authorize the app. - Declare the CarPlay scene. Add the CarPlay scene configuration to
Info.plist, point it to the correct scene delegate, and implementCPTemplateApplicationSceneDelegate. Keep phone and car lifecycles separate so a disconnected session can be recreated cleanly. - Build only with permitted surfaces. Use the templates and APIs assigned to the entitlement. A navigation app can implement the managed map window; audio, communication, charging, parking and ordering apps must stay within their approved template families.
- Test connection and state changes. Exercise first connection, disconnect and reconnect, locked-phone states, poor network conditions, route cancellation and interrupted calls or audio. Confirm that the interface returns to a valid template hierarchy instead of assuming the phone scene is still active.
- Submit for the additional review layer. CarPlay-enabled apps are subject to extra CarPlay App Store Review Guidelines in addition to the ordinary App Store rules. Passing technical tests does not guarantee approval if the user flow or category fit is unacceptable.
A minimal scene declaration is conceptually separate from the phone interface. The exact keys and delegate class must follow the current SDK documentation and the capability Apple granted; copying a scene declaration without the matching entitlement will not produce a supported app.

Why an app may be missing from your CarPlay app list
If an installed iPhone app does not appear in the vehicle, check the cause in this order:
- It has no eligible category. Many perfectly valid iPhone apps have no CarPlay entitlement because their core task is not one Apple has opened for dashboard use.
- The developer has not received approval. A public iPhone release can exist before a CarPlay request is submitted, approved or included in a shipped build.
- The app supports CarPlay only in a different build or region. CarPlay capabilities can be tied to the signed app variant and release configuration; the presence of the phone app alone proves nothing about the connected build.
- The app’s capability or profile is wrong. A signing or provisioning mismatch can prevent a legitimately approved integration from being recognized. This is a developer-side issue, not a setting the driver can repair.
- The app is installed but not enabled in the vehicle’s CarPlay settings. If the developer has shipped a supported integration, check the iPhone’s CarPlay settings for the connected vehicle and its app arrangement. This step cannot add support to an app that lacks the entitlement.
- The vehicle or iOS version does not support the required feature. Compatibility varies by vehicle, connection method and operating-system release. Update the phone and vehicle firmware where applicable, then test a known-supported app to separate a connection problem from an app-eligibility problem.
Common misconceptions and their corrections
“The app plays audio, so it should qualify automatically.”
Audio playback on the iPhone is not the same as the audio CarPlay entitlement. Apple still decides whether the app qualifies and which audio templates it may use.
“I can mirror any app if I use a cable or wireless adapter.”
A cable or wireless connection transports an authorized CarPlay session; it does not grant new code-signing capabilities. Hardware cannot turn an unsupported app into a CarPlay app.

“CallKit or MapKit is the entitlement.”
Those frameworks provide system services. The CarPlay category entitlement remains a separate Apple-managed capability, and the app must still implement the matching CarPlay scene and review requirements.
“A developer can hide the normal iPhone UI inside a template.”
CarPlay templates are not a generic web view or screen-mirroring container. Apple’s APIs restrict what information, controls and navigation patterns can be exposed, and review can reject an implementation that technically uses templates but does not fit the approved driving task.

So the answer to “Can any app be added to CarPlay?” is no. Only apps that fit an Apple-recognized category, receive the corresponding managed entitlement, implement the restricted CarPlay architecture and pass the extra review process can appear there. For users, the missing icon usually reflects that policy and signing decision rather than a fault with the iPhone connection.
