An amplifier boosts an audio signal enough to drive a speaker. You need a separate amplifier for passive speakers; powered speakers already have amplification built in. The right amp matters when it must provide enough clean power at the volume you want and safely handle the speaker’s impedance—but adding a bigger or more expensive amp does not automatically improve sound.
What an amplifier does
A player, computer, mixer, or preamplifier sends an audio signal. That signal may not have enough power to move a passive speaker’s drivers. A power amplifier raises it and supplies the current the speaker needs to reproduce sound. Without suitable amplification, a passive speaker cannot play as intended.

An integrated amplifier combines power amplification with source control or preamplifier functions. A stereo receiver adds a radio tuner. A standalone power amplifier is intended to amplify a signal from another component, such as a preamplifier.
Do your speakers need a separate amplifier?
Check whether the speakers are passive or powered. Passive speakers need an external amplifier in the signal chain. Powered, or active, speakers have amplification built in, so you generally do not add a separate power amp to drive their drivers. You still need a compatible source and the right connections.

- Bass & Treble Control】Designed with volume, treble and bass control knobs for more delicate adjustment of the sound, much fun and high playability. Include controller for distant audio adjustments. Note: There is an isolation plastic sheet at the bottom of the remote control, which needs to be removed before use.
For a PA system, powered speakers or a powered mixer can reduce the number of separate components and connections. The best arrangement depends on the equipment and the system’s output needs.
How much does an amplifier affect sound quality?
An amplifier matters when it is a limiting or incompatible part of the system. If it cannot deliver enough clean output for the intended listening level, the system may not reach that level without clipping or overload. If it is not rated for the speakers’ load, it may not operate safely or as intended.

- Amplify and enjoy your home audio experience in the comfort of your home.Frequency band : 2,400 MHz – 2,483.5 MHz, Maximum output power : ≤ 5.0 dBm..Connector Type: Bluetooth
- 100 watts x 2 (8 ohms, 1 Kilo Hertz). Speaker impedance - 6–16 ohms
- Phono input, 4 stereo RCA audio inputs, 3.5 millimeter input, stereo RCA output
- Built in Bluetooth lets you wirelessly stream your favorite music service, podcasts, and more from other Bluetooth devices.
- Connect up to 4 speakers; A/B switching to play all at once, or in separate zones
When an amplifier already provides adequate output and is compatible with the speakers, upgrading to a higher-wattage or more expensive model is not, by itself, a guarantee of better sound. Sound depends on the whole system and its use: the speakers, room, listening distance, source, connections, and desired volume all matter.

- Check impedance and load rating. Compare the speakers’ impedance with the amplifier’s supported speaker loads. Lower-impedance speakers can demand more current, and the amplifier’s output can change with the load. If you connect multiple speakers, account for how they are wired; the resulting load matters too.
- Compare output ratings under like conditions. Check the amplifier’s output at the relevant impedance, along with channel count and the rating conditions. Note whether a figure is continuous or peak rather than treating all wattage claims as equivalent.
- Distinguish amplifier output from speaker power handling. An amplifier’s rating describes what it can deliver under stated conditions; a speaker’s power-handling rating describes the input it can handle. These are different measures. Speaker wattage is not a measure of how loud it will play.
- Start with the listening level you need. A small room at moderate volume and a PA serving an audience have different output goals. Room size and listening distance also affect what is needed. For a PA, speaker sensitivity and peak capability help determine whether the system can reach the target sound-pressure level.
- Confirm the connections and system role. Make sure the amplifier accepts the source you plan to use and connects correctly to the speakers. Decide whether you need a power amplifier, an integrated amplifier, or a receiver based on what the rest of your system already does.
There is no universal watts-per-speaker formula. Yamaha’s commercial PA guide gives a general example of amplifier output around 0.8 to 1.25 times a speaker’s program rating for the PA context it describes; that range should not be treated as a rule for home audio: Yamaha’s PA amplifier guide. For your own equipment, follow its specifications and manuals.

| Setup | Separate power amplifier? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Passive speakers | Yes; the speakers need amplification from an external component. | Amplifier output at the speaker impedance, supported load, connections, and required listening level. |
| Powered speakers | Generally no; amplification is built in. | Source compatibility, input connections, and whether the speakers can meet the system’s output needs. |
| PA using powered speakers or a powered mixer | Often not as a separate box for the speakers being driven by that equipment. | System output goal, connections, and whether the powered equipment suits the speakers and use. |
For passive speakers, the question is not whether an amplifier is optional, but whether the chosen one can drive them properly. For powered speakers, an extra power amp is generally unnecessary; focus instead on the built-in amplification, inputs, and the output required for your use.
