Applied Materials and Lam Research make the industrial equipment and process systems that semiconductor manufacturers use to build chips on silicon wafers. Their products deposit films, remove selected materials, alter material properties, clean residues, and measure changes during fabrication; they are not finished processors, memory chips, or consumer electronics.
The distinction matters because a modern chip is produced through hundreds of tightly controlled operations. A wafer may receive a conductor or insulator, have parts of that film etched away, be cleaned, measured, and processed again many times. Applied Materials offers a broader portfolio across those stages, while Lam Research’s process overview centers on deposition, plasma etch, strip, cleaning, and mass metrology. There is meaningful overlap, especially in deposition and etch, so the useful comparison is what each process family does in the wafer flow—not a blanket claim that one company is better.

What do Applied Materials and Lam Research make?
Both companies sell capital equipment and related process technologies to semiconductor fabs. A fab uses these systems on silicon wafers before the wafers are cut into individual dies and packaged. The equipment controls materials at dimensions where a small thickness, profile, particle, or residue difference can affect whether a device works.
The basic jobs are complementary:
- Deposition adds a controlled film, such as a metal conductor or an insulating dielectric.
- Etch selectively removes portions of films to create trenches, contacts, lines, holes, and other features.
- Cleaning and stripping remove photoresist, particles, contaminants, and residues before a subsequent operation.
- Modification changes a material’s electrical or physical properties, for example through ion implantation or thermal treatment.
- Metrology and defect control measure what changed and identify process variation.
These are production tools, not standalone chip-design software. Their output is a wafer with precisely formed structures that later steps will turn into transistors, interconnects, memory cells, or packaged devices.

What does Applied Materials sell?
Applied Materials’ official semiconductor portfolio is organized around creating materials, shaping or removing them, modifying them, analyzing them, and connecting devices through heterogeneous integration. The overview is a portfolio map rather than a complete list of every product or market position.
Creating and depositing materials
Applied lists atomic layer deposition (ALD), dielectric and metal deposition, epitaxy, plating, and selective deposition. ALD builds a film in repeated, self-limiting surface reactions, which is useful when a thin layer must cover complex three-dimensional surfaces. Epitaxy grows a crystalline layer aligned with the underlying material. Plating can add metal in structures that will carry electrical current. Selective deposition aims to place material on chosen surfaces while limiting growth elsewhere.
Shaping and removing materials
The portfolio includes chemical mechanical planarization (CMP), etch, pattern shaping, photomask-related work, and selective etch. CMP combines chemical reactions and mechanical polishing to flatten a wafer so later layers can be aligned and processed. Etch and pattern-shaping systems transfer a pattern into a film or adjust the profile of a feature. Selective etch targets one material more than another, an increasingly important capability when a stack contains several similar layers.
Modifying materials
Applied lists ion implantation and thermal processing in this group. Implantation introduces dopant atoms into selected regions to set transistor behavior. Thermal steps activate dopants, repair or transform films, and control reactions without adding a new patterned layer.
Analyzing and integrating devices
Defect and patterning control tools analyze wafers for unwanted particles, defects, and dimensional variation. Applied also identifies heterogeneous integration, the assembly of different dies or components into a combined system, as part of its semiconductor offering. That places the company across both front-end wafer processing and later integration activities, rather than limiting it to one operation.

What does Lam Research make?
Lam Research’s process overview emphasizes five linked areas: thin-film deposition, plasma etch, photoresist strip, wafer cleaning, and mass metrology.
Thin-film deposition
Lam describes deposition systems that form conducting metal and insulating dielectric layers. The film must have the required thickness, composition, uniformity, and coverage across the wafer. In a three-dimensional feature, coverage at the bottom and sidewalls can be as important as the average thickness on an open surface.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Plasma etch
Plasma etch removes selected portions of wafer films to define features. The process has to stop at the intended layer, preserve the desired sidewall shape, and avoid damaging nearby materials. As structures become narrower or taller, controlling profile and selectivity becomes harder.
Strip and wafer cleaning
After a pattern-transfer or deposition step, photoresist and reaction by-products may remain. Strip systems remove resist, while cleaning systems remove particles, contaminants, and residues. Cleaning is not cosmetic: material left on a wafer can interfere with adhesion, electrical contact, or the next lithography and etch step.
Mass metrology
Lam’s overview includes mass metrology that measures material changes after deposition, etch, and cleaning. A measurement can indicate whether the intended amount of film was added or removed and whether a process is drifting. That information lets engineers adjust a recipe or hold a lot before variation spreads through many wafers.

How the tools work together in a fab
A chip is not made by running one machine once. The wafer moves through a repeated sequence in which each operation creates the conditions for the next one.

- Prepare a surface. A wafer enters a module with a specified film or cleaned surface. Flatness, contamination, and prior-layer history affect the next result.
- Deposit a film. A conductor, dielectric, semiconductor layer, or other material is added with controlled thickness and composition.
- Pattern the target area. Lithography defines where material should remain or be removed. The equipment discussed here then has to transfer that pattern accurately into the underlying film.
- Etch selected regions. Plasma or other etch processes remove exposed material while protecting the layer that should remain and stopping at the correct interface.
- Strip and clean. Resist, particles, reaction products, and other residues are removed so they do not contaminate the next module.
- Modify the material. Implantation, thermal processing, or another treatment changes electrical properties, crystallinity, stress, or interfaces.
- Measure the result. Metrology and defect-control systems check dimensions, film changes, and unwanted defects. The data can trigger recipe corrections or a process hold.
- Repeat and integrate. CMP can planarize the surface, and the cycle repeats for additional layers. Later heterogeneous-integration steps connect separately manufactured devices or dies.
The exact order varies by device and layer. The important point is feedback: deposition, removal, cleaning, modification, and measurement form a controlled loop rather than isolated purchases.
Why do chipmakers need this equipment?
Advanced structures leave little process margin
Lam says chip production involves hundreds of individual steps. Each step can alter the surface presented to the next one. A slight thickness error, an incomplete clean, or an etch profile that leans instead of standing vertically can accumulate into a contact failure or a defective memory cell.
Modern logic and memory also use three-dimensional structures and multiple materials. A process must reach deep, narrow openings, cover sidewalls, remove one film without removing its neighbor, and preserve interfaces that may be only a few nanometers apart. Conventional “add material, then remove material” descriptions are therefore incomplete without selectivity, uniformity, profile control, and measurement.
Yield depends on repeatability across many wafers
A fab sells working dies, so the equipment must reproduce a recipe across a wafer and from wafer to wafer. Sensors and metrology reveal drift; cleaning limits particles; planarization creates a surface on which another layer can be aligned. Better control can reduce the number of wafers that fail inspection, although the financial effect of any particular tool depends on the customer’s process, recipe, and factory conditions.

New device architectures require new process capabilities
Gate-all-around (GAA) transistors, advanced wiring, 3D NAND stacks, DRAM, and high-bandwidth memory expose different problems. A transistor gate may wrap around a nanosheet; a memory stack may contain many repeated layers; a contact may need a metal that fills a narrow opening without damaging surrounding dielectrics. Equipment suppliers develop process modules for those geometries so chipmakers can turn a circuit design into a manufacturable structure.

How to interpret performance and adoption numbers
Equipment announcements often combine a technical objective with a customer or field figure. “More than 250 chambers in the field” refers specifically to Applied Materials’ February 2026 statement about Sym3 Z’s tool-of-record status in 2 nm logic manufacturing; it is not an independent count of the company’s installed base or a measure of total etch-market share.
Likewise, “up to 15 percent lower critical contact resistance” describes Applied’s comparison for the announced molybdenum ALD system against its stated Endura Volta selective-tungsten benchmark. “Up to” identifies a maximum reported improvement, not a guaranteed result for every wafer or product. The relevant baseline, recipe, integration scheme, and measurement method determine whether a customer sees the same outcome.
Lam’s “hundreds of individual steps” description communicates process complexity, not a universal fixed number. Different chips, technology generations, and factories use different flows. The practical lesson is that a single equipment step sits inside a long chain where variation can propagate.

A fab generally buys a process capability, not just a box. The purchase can include a chamber configured for a particular film, an etch recipe tuned to a stack, cleaning and strip modules, measurement hardware, software for recipe control, and service needed to keep the system qualified. The required combination changes with the device type: a 3D NAND line has different priorities from a GAA logic line, and a memory-contact process has different material constraints from a wiring layer.
Engineers therefore evaluate whether a tool can meet a target thickness, selectivity, profile, defect level, throughput, and repeatability inside the complete flow. A deposition system that produces an excellent film may still be unsuitable if its chemistry contaminates the next module; an etch system with a sharp profile may not be useful if it damages a sensitive dielectric. Metrology closes that loop by showing whether the intended result was achieved.
The practical takeaway
Applied Materials and Lam Research are enabling suppliers for semiconductor manufacturing. Applied’s published portfolio spans deposition, removal and planarization, material modification, analysis, and heterogeneous integration. Lam’s published process overview concentrates on deposition, plasma etch, strip, cleaning, and mass metrology. Their capabilities overlap, particularly where a fab must add and remove films, but each company’s listed emphasis covers different parts of the wafer flow.
Chipmakers need these systems because advanced devices are built by repeating tightly controlled material transformations across hundreds of steps. The equipment converts a circuit design into physical structures while cleaning, measuring, and correcting the wafer often enough to make those structures manufacturable at scale.
