Apple’s September 14 availability notice confirmed that the major releases began rolling out, but installing an operating system is not the same as receiving every headline feature.
The practical test is your exact model, the specific function you want, and your language and region. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI have a narrower hardware list than general operating-system eligibility, and rollout conditions can change.

What Apple announced, and what is available now
On June 8, 2026, Apple used WWDC26 to preview its next major software releases: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27 and tvOS 27. The announcement described the features as free software updates planned for fall 2026. You can read the original preview in Apple’s WWDC26 announcement.
On September 14, Apple said the major updates had begun rolling out across those platforms. That later notice is the relevant source for availability, rather than the June preview. Apple also cautions in the release notice that “Features are subject to change.” A feature shown at an event can therefore be revised, delayed, limited by geography or language, or distributed in stages.

For the current rollout status, use Apple’s September software-platform availability notice. It establishes that distribution started; it does not replace the device-specific support information for every individual feature.
Why operating-system support and feature support are different
A device may be able to install iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27 or tvOS 27 while lacking the processor, memory, sensors, paired-device requirement or regional authorization for one advertised capability. Apple’s September list is specifically an eligibility list for Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. It is not a complete compatibility matrix for every new function in all six operating systems.
That distinction prevents two common mistakes:
- Assuming that an available system update automatically unlocks Apple Intelligence or Siri AI.
- Assuming that a device absent from the AI list cannot receive the ordinary operating-system update or other new features.
Apple has not published, in the announcements covered here, a single model-by-model table covering every feature across all platforms. For a purchasing or upgrade decision, check the support page for the exact model and function instead of relying on a headline such as “supports iOS 27.”
Devices Apple lists for Apple Intelligence and Siri AI
The following hardware appears in Apple’s September 2026 eligibility notice. The list applies to Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, not to all iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27 or tvOS 27 features.

| Product category | Models identified by Apple | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max | Eligibility is for Apple Intelligence and Siri AI; ordinary software-update support is a separate question. |
| iPad | iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad models with M1 or later | The chip requirement applies to the listed AI capabilities, not necessarily to every iPadOS feature. |
| Mac | MacBook Neo (A18 Pro) and Mac models with M1 or later | Check the exact Mac model and operating-system support separately. |
| Spatial computer | Apple Vision Pro | Language and regional availability still apply. |
| Apple Watch | Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later | Some Watch features require the paired iPhone to be nearby. |
| Apple Watch SE | Apple Watch SE 3 | It must be paired with an iPhone that is itself enabled for Apple Intelligence. |
Apple’s September notice is the source for these model examples. Apple Intelligence availability can also depend on the software build, account settings and staged rollout, so the table should be treated as a starting point rather than a permanent guarantee.
Language and location can block a feature even on eligible hardware
Hardware eligibility is only one layer. Apple says availability can vary by language and region and can be affected by local law. The June announcement listed supported languages for Apple Intelligence and warned that some functions would not be offered everywhere.
In its September Siri AI announcement, Apple said the upgraded assistant began rolling out in English beta. The notice described French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish as coming in October. That wording described Apple’s planned schedule; it is not independent confirmation that every language rollout completed in every country. Check the current Apple support documentation before changing a device’s primary language for a feature.

- Siri AI was not initially available in iOS, iPadOS and watchOS in the EU.
- Siri AI and other new Apple Intelligence features were not available in China while Apple worked through regulatory requirements.
These are time-sensitive launch conditions, not a statement that availability can never change. Apple may alter them as approvals, translations and software releases progress.
How to check your own device before updating or buying
Use this three-part check whenever an event headline raises a compatibility question. Record the date because Apple can change a rollout or support page after your first check.
- Identify the exact hardware. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > About and note the model name and software version. On a Mac, open Apple menu > About This Mac and record the model and chip. In the Watch app on the paired iPhone, open My Watch > General > About. Do not stop at a label such as “iPhone,” “iPad” or “Mac”; generation and chip determine eligibility.
- Name the function you need. Separate “install the new operating system” from “use Apple Intelligence,” “use Siri AI” or another specific feature. Search Apple’s current support documentation for that function and your exact model. A general OS-compatibility page cannot answer a narrower AI requirement by itself.
- Apply language, region and pairing conditions. Check the device’s country or region, selected language, account configuration and, for Apple Watch, whether the required iPhone is nearby and eligible. Confirm the current rollout date and any beta label before treating the feature as fully available.
If the update appears in Software Update but the feature does not, that is not automatically an error. Recheck the model, language, region and pairing conditions, install the latest available build, and consult Apple’s current feature-specific support page.

What earlier compatibility numbers can—and cannot—tell you
Apple’s 2026 Environmental Progress Report gives useful historical context, but it does not promise support for iOS 27 or later. The report says Apple’s most recent iOS release at the time, iOS 26, extended support back to iPhone 11 models introduced in 2019. It says iPadOS 26 supported the eighth-generation iPad from 2020, and macOS Tahoe supported MacBook models from 2019 onward.

| Release cited by Apple | Oldest support example in the report | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 26 | iPhone 11 (2019) | A historical iOS 26 boundary, not an iOS 27 guarantee. |
| iPadOS 26 | Eighth-generation iPad (2020) | A historical iPadOS 26 boundary, not a promise for later releases. |
| macOS Tahoe | MacBook models from 2019 onward | A Tahoe-era example; exact Mac model support still matters. |
The same report says that by February 2026, more than 74 percent of iPhone devices introduced in the previous four years had updated to iOS 26, while more than 66 percent of iPad devices introduced in that period had updated to iPadOS 26. Those adoption figures are attributed to Apple (2026) and describe iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, not the releases announced at WWDC26. They indicate uptake, not compatibility, performance or a requirement that every owner update.

Do not buy a new device solely because an event introduced a new operating system. First determine whether your current hardware can install the release and whether the specific feature you want has a narrower requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you want routine software updates
Use Apple’s compatibility page for the exact operating system and model. A device can receive security fixes and ordinary platform features without appearing in the Apple Intelligence and Siri AI list. The announcements do not establish that every older device receives every feature, so avoid inferring a cutoff from the AI table.

If you want Apple Intelligence or Siri AI
Compare your model with Apple’s AI eligibility list, then check language and region. An iPhone 16 model is one eligible upgrade option named by Apple for readers whose current iPhone does not qualify and who specifically want those AI capabilities. Apple’s announcement establishes eligibility, not a price, retailer listing, performance result or recommendation based on hands-on testing. An iPhone 16 is not presented as necessary for routine software updates or for every new feature.
If you use Apple Watch
Verify both the Watch generation and the paired iPhone. Apple lists Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, and SE 3 under the AI requirements, but notes that some Watch functions need the iPhone nearby. An eligible Watch paired to an ineligible phone may therefore fail the complete requirement for a particular feature.
What to do when a promised feature is missing
Work through the checks in this order rather than repeatedly reinstalling the update:

- Verify that the feature is one Apple lists for that platform, rather than assuming it is part of the general OS update.
- Check Apple’s current language and country availability, including EU or China restrictions.
- Install any supplemental software update and allow for staged rollout or beta status.
- For Apple Watch, confirm the paired iPhone is AI-enabled and nearby when the feature requires it.
- If the feature still does not appear, use Apple Support’s current device-specific documentation; the September announcement is not a full troubleshooting matrix.
Because Apple states that features are subject to change, a missing option can reflect a changed launch plan rather than a fault in your device. Keep the date of your compatibility check with your notes so you can distinguish a later policy change from a setup problem.
The practical takeaway for the 2026 releases
Apple’s event announcements tell you what the company previewed and when broad software distribution started. They do not provide a universal “all features on all devices” promise. Treat compatibility as a three-way match between the exact hardware, the desired function and the current language or regional rules. Use the event pages for chronology, the feature-specific support page for the decision, and the September rollout notice for the latest availability context.
