Every app installed from the App Store occupies local space. An app may also keep saved settings, accounts, downloaded resources, caches, or other data. Apple’s storage-management screen reports usage by app, so the amount shown is the practical measure to use when deciding what to remove. The support documentation does not publish a universal storage figure for every Apple TV model, and app size varies by software and content.

When Apple says Apple TV streams video and music, it is distinguishing playback from maintaining a permanent local library. A movie or song you watch through a streaming service is not automatically evidence that a complete copy has been saved in Apple TV’s user-accessible storage. Temporary operating data may exist during playback, but Apple’s cited guide identifies apps—not a personal video or music archive—as the local storage category it explains. Do not use the presence of a title in a streaming app as proof that Apple TV has stored the title as a file you can browse or move.

How to see what is using space

- Open Settings.
- Choose General.
- Select Usage.
- Open Manage Storage.

Use the list to make a targeted decision
- Start with apps you no longer use, especially large games or media apps that you installed for a one-time event.
- Check whether an app is still needed before removing it; an account login or local settings may be important to you.
- After an action, return to Manage Storage and confirm that the available-space reading changed.
- If the list does not explain a warning, avoid assuming that a hidden personal file store exists. Apple’s guide centers on app usage and does not provide an exhaustive inventory of every system-managed byte.
Offloading versus deleting an app
Apple provides two different ways to reclaim space. The distinction matters because one preserves app data and the other removes it. Apple’s installation guide describes the consequences as follows.

What happens after an offload
When an offloaded app remains available in the App Store, you can download it again. Retention applies to the data Apple’s guide describes; it is not a promise that every service will recreate information held on a provider’s servers or that an app that has been withdrawn will remain downloadable.
What happens after deletion
Deleting removes both the app and its data. Apple warns that the data may not be restored simply by downloading the app again. Treat deletion as a reset: any information that existed only on Apple TV can be lost, while information synchronized to an account may depend on that service’s own recovery process.

Automatic offloading
Apple also documents an Offload Unused Apps option under Settings > Apps. The purpose is to remove apps that are not being used while keeping their data. Because the option is software- and model-dependent, look for it in that location rather than assuming every Apple TV presents the same control. If you need predictable results immediately, use the per-app controls in Manage Storage.

Apple TV can show photos and videos through iCloud Photos and Shared Photo Library. Apple’s synchronization guide says iCloud Photos automatically stores full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud. The TV is an access point to cloud content
The documented workflow makes Apple TV a screen and access point for your cloud-synchronized library. It does not say that the full-resolution library is downloaded into the device’s local storage. Therefore, seeing an image in Photos should not be interpreted as proof that Apple TV has become a backup drive for that image. The cloud copy remains the location Apple identifies for the full-resolution originals.

Profile and library limitations
Apple specifies that only the default profile on Apple TV 4K can sync photos and view content in Photos. If another household member cannot see the expected library, check which profile is active before treating the problem as missing storage. Shared Photo Library access and iCloud synchronization also depend on the Apple account and settings used for the device.
Why Photos can still affect your expectations
Photos presents a familiar grid of local-looking content, but the interface does not change the storage model described by Apple. Browsing, memories, albums, and slideshows are viewing features. They should be kept conceptually separate from the app storage meter in Manage Storage, which is where Apple directs you to investigate local space usage.
What “cannot store” safely means
The title’s wording can invite broader claims than Apple’s documentation supports. The guides establish a contrast: Apple TV 4K streams video and music, stores apps locally, and displays Photos content synchronized from iCloud. They do not publish an exhaustive list of unsupported file types or every item that cannot be written to local storage.
Do not treat Apple TV as a general file cabinet
Nothing in the cited support pages describes a user-facing folder system for arbitrary documents, downloaded video files, music files, or backups. As a result, you should not plan to copy a personal file collection to Apple TV in the way you would copy files to a computer. Use the app or cloud service designed for the content you want to view, and regard Apple TV’s local space as primarily app space unless Apple documents a specific feature otherwise.
External-drive expansion is not established here
The Apple storage and Photos guides do not say that connecting an external drive expands Apple TV capacity. They also do not provide a supported procedure for formatting a drive, moving apps to it, or selecting it as a media library. That is an evidence limit, not a claim that every conceivable accessory is impossible. Before relying on an external-drive setup, look for documentation for your exact model and tvOS version; the pages cited here cannot confirm it.
Cloud storage is not the same as device storage
iCloud capacity and Apple TV’s local app capacity are separate concepts. A large iCloud Photos library can be available for viewing without occupying the same amount of local space on the television. Conversely, adding apps can consume local space even if your photo library is entirely cloud-managed.

- Open Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage on the Apple TV 4K path documented by Apple.
- Sort your decisions by the apps using the most space, not by how many icons appear on the Home Screen.
- Choose Offload for an app you may use again and whose data you want to retain.
- Choose Delete only when removing the app’s data is acceptable.
- If available on your software, enable Settings > Apps > Offload Unused Apps for automatic reclamation of unused app space.
- Reopen Manage Storage to verify the result, then reinstall an offloaded app if you need it and it is still offered in the App Store.
If the warning returns quickly
A warning that returns after removing one app usually means another installed app is consuming the newly available space or that the app you removed was not the largest user. Recheck the usage list instead of deleting Photos content on the assumption that the full iCloud library is stored locally. If the available controls do not match Apple’s tvOS 27 instructions, account for differences in model, software version, or region before troubleshooting further.
