Ao Air introduced the Atmos Faceware in January 2020 with an announced price of $350 and a pitch built around filtered air for the wearer. But its launch-era promise should not be confused with proof that it outperformed a certified respirator: reporting at the time said the company had not shown that its filters were more protective than standard NIOSH-certified masks, and its commissioned study was unpublished and not peer reviewed. What was the Atmos Faceware?
Ao Air presented Atmos Faceware at CES in January 2020 as a personal air-filtering device aimed at pollution, including wildfire smoke. Contemporary reports described a fan-driven design intended to create a pocket of filtered air in front of the nose and mouth rather than relying on a conventional full-face seal. That description reflects the product’s launch-era design and company claims relayed by reporters, not a finding that the device provided equivalent protection to a tight-fitting respirator.

Futurism reported an announced launch price of $350 on January 8, 2020. That is not a current quote. The evidence available here does not establish whether Atmos is still sold, what it costs now, whether replacement filters remain available, or whether its specifications or certification status changed after launch.
What did the company claim, and what was established?
At launch, Ao Air’s head of US Mikal Peveto told Engadget, as quoted by Futurism, “It’s 50 times better [than a regular mask].” That was a company representative’s claim, not an independently established result in the cited coverage. Futurism reported that Ao Air had not then demonstrated that its filters were more protective than standard NIOSH-certified masks; the company’s commissioned study had not been published or peer reviewed at that time.

Those limits matter because a striking performance comparison is meaningful only when the device, test conditions, comparator, and results can be scrutinized. The launch-era reporting supports describing Atmos as an ambitious product pitch, but it does not support presenting the “50 times” statement as a verified protection rating.
How does that compare with wildfire-smoke protection guidance?
For workplace wildfire-smoke protection, Washington State’s official guidance identifies a NIOSH-approved N95 filtering-facepiece respirator as the minimum level of protection and emphasizes proper fit. Its appendix says: “A NIOSH-approved N95 filtering-facepiece respirator, shown in the image below, is the minimum level of protection for wildfire smoke.” The recommendation concerns workplace wildfire-smoke protection in Washington State; it is not a certification statement about Atmos.

A respirator is not interchangeable with any device marketed as a mask or air filter. Fit is part of its protection: Washington guidance warns that poor fit can let smoke leak around the respirator and advises following the manufacturer’s instructions. Particle-filtering respirators also do not protect against gases or vapors and do not supply oxygen.

Can indoor air filtration help during smoke events?
Indoor filtration addresses a different problem from personal outdoor protection. A 2022 National Academies chapter summarizes an EPA review finding that portable air cleaners often reduced indoor PM2.5 concentrations by around 50% on average across residential measurement studies. The underlying studies were not all specific to wildfire smoke, and that average is not a promise for a particular cleaner, room, or home.
HVAC filtration results also depend on the home and system. The National Academies summarizes a single California test house in which HVAC filtration with high-efficiency MERV filters reduced PM2.5 by 90% under typical ambient conditions. A separate 2020 analysis summarized in the same chapter found about 40% average in-home effectiveness for HVAC filtration, with wide variation among homes. These findings illustrate why household filtration results should not be transferred to a wearable product or treated as guaranteed performance.

What should a buyer verify before choosing a smoke-protection device?
- Certification and target: Confirm whether the device is NIOSH-approved and what contaminants it is designed to filter. Particle filtration does not address gases or vapors.
- Fit: For a tight-fitting respirator, follow the manufacturer’s fitting instructions; a poor seal can allow smoke around the filter.
- Evidence: Distinguish independently reviewable test results from a company’s performance claims. The cited launch reporting did not establish Atmos’s superiority over certified masks.
- Use case: A wearable respirator is for personal exposure reduction; a portable cleaner or HVAC filter is intended to reduce particles in indoor air. They solve different problems.
- Ongoing costs and access: Check current device availability, replacement-filter supply, and recurring costs. Present-day Atmos sales status and filter access are not established by the launch-era sources.
