The Android RPCS3 path is an experimental arm64-v8a port, and its own description warns that users should expect breakage. A recent flagship-class 64-bit ARM phone is the sensible starting category for experimentation, but no chipset, RAM capacity, price tier or phone model guarantees that a particular PS3 game will run well.
The practical answer is to choose a phone for its exact system-on-chip, graphics drivers, sustained cooling and your target game’s compatibility status—not by RAM alone or by assuming desktop RPCS3 requirements apply to Android.

What is actually supported on Android?
RPCS3 documentation and search results list Android arm64-v8a among supported platforms. That establishes an architecture and platform target, not a performance floor. Android support is being developed through an experimental fork rather than a mature, universally tested consumer app. The fork describes itself as experimental and tells users to expect breakage.

Desktop RPCS3 support does not mean that an Android build offers the same renderer maturity, controller handling, shader behavior, game coverage or stability. A phone can meet the 64-bit ARM requirement and still fail to boot a title, render incorrectly, crash during a scene transition or run too slowly for practical play.

Why “minimum specs” are not published
No authoritative Android-specific table identifies a minimum CPU model, GPU, RAM amount, storage capacity, Android release, cooling system or controller. Treat any article claiming that a particular Snapdragon tier or a fixed RAM number is a guaranteed minimum as an extrapolation, not an established RPCS3 requirement.
Performance also varies by game. The project maintains a compatibility wiki with a status for each title, so the relevant question is not “Can this phone emulate PS3?” but “How does this Android build perform with the exact game I want to play?”
The phone characteristics that matter
The following are decision factors for choosing an experimental device. They are not verified minimum requirements.
64-bit ARM CPU and the exact SoC
The Android target is arm64-v8a, so a 64-bit ARM processor is the basic architectural starting point. Beyond that, the exact SoC matters more than a marketing label. CPU core design, sustained clock behavior, memory bandwidth, virtualization or translation overhead and the emulator build can all affect frame pacing.
A current flagship-class or upper-tier 64-bit ARM SoC gives you more headroom than an entry-level chip, but the available evidence does not identify one model as required. Two phones using similarly named chips can behave differently because of firmware, thermal limits and driver versions.

GPU and driver quality
PS3 emulation relies heavily on the graphics driver and renderer as well as raw GPU speed. Check whether the phone’s Android build supplies stable Vulkan and OpenGL drivers, whether the emulator recognizes the GPU correctly and whether known rendering issues affect your target game.
Do not infer compatibility from the GPU name alone. A powerful GPU with a problematic driver can be less useful than a slower one with a mature driver path. Driver updates can also change results, so record the Android build and driver version when testing.

No Android-specific RAM minimum was established. More memory can reduce pressure from the operating system and background apps, but it does not turn an incompatible game into a playable one. RAM capacity should therefore be treated as headroom for the emulator, shaders, caches and normal multitasking rather than as a pass/fail specification.
A 12 GB configuration appears in one creator’s April 2, 2025 video description for a Poco F6. That is a reported device configuration, not a controlled measurement, official recommendation or proof that 12 GB is required. It cannot be generalized into a minimum.
Storage capacity and speed
No verified Android storage requirement was found. In practice, you need room for the emulator, game dumps that you legally own, shader or pipeline caches, save data, Android updates and free space for the phone’s normal operation. A fast internal storage system can make loading and cache operations less frustrating, but no tested capacity or throughput threshold has been published for the Android fork.

Sustained cooling
PS3 emulation can maintain a heavy CPU and GPU load for long sessions. A phone that performs well for a short benchmark may throttle after it heats up. Look for evidence of sustained performance in long sessions, not only a peak score. Thermal design, ambient temperature, case thickness and charging behavior all affect the result.
Cooling accessories may be helpful for a particular handset, but the available evidence does not establish one as required or quantify its benefit for RPCS3 on Android.
Android version, firmware and controller support
The Android fork’s documentation does not state a universal Android-version minimum, controller requirement or firmware whitelist. Keep the phone updated, but recognize that an update can also alter graphics drivers or break a previously working configuration. Test your controller, display output and input mapping with the specific build you plan to use.
Do not apply Linux ARM64 requirements to an Android phone
An RPCS3 ARM64 project post dated December 9, 2024 surfaced requirements for Linux ARM64: an armv8.2-a CPU, 8 GB of RAM and OpenGL 4.3 or Vulkan-capable graphics and drivers. Those figures describe a Linux environment. They are not Android-phone requirements and should not be presented as an Android minimum.
| Figure or statement | What it applies to | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| armv8.2-a CPU | Linux ARM64 requirements in the December 9, 2024 project post | Do not relabel it as an Android phone floor |
| 8 GB RAM | Linux ARM64 requirements in the same post | Not evidence of an Android RAM minimum |
| OpenGL 4.3 or Vulkan-capable graphics/drivers | Linux ARM64 requirements in the same post | Useful context about graphics APIs, not an Android guarantee |
| Android arm64-v8a | Platform listed in the RPCS3 FAQ search result and Android fork | Confirms the target architecture, not expected speed or compatibility |

The description does not establish test methodology, sustained frame rates, game selection, thermal conditions or long-session reliability. Use the example only as an indication that experimentation is occurring on upper-tier modern hardware. Do not buy that model—or any phone with the same chip—on the assumption that it will run a representative PS3 library acceptably.

The project compatibility wiki reports title-by-title statuses. The September 2026 table, edited September 30, shows:
| Status | Count | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Playable | 2,809 | Project compatibility-list entries, not Android-specific results |
| Ingame | 721 | Project compatibility-list entries, not Android-specific results |
| Intro | 31 | Project compatibility-list entries, not Android-specific results |
| Loadable | 2 | Project compatibility-list entries, not Android-specific results |
| Nothing | 0 | Project compatibility-list entries, not Android-specific results |
From May 2024 onward, the wiki says these figures exclude entries that are not PS3 games. They still describe the project’s compatibility list as a whole, not performance on Android phones. A title marked playable on desktop hardware may remain impractical on an experimental Android build.
How to evaluate a phone before buying it
- List your target games. Write down the exact PS3 titles, editions and regions you care about. Compatibility can differ by title and sometimes by build.
- Check each title in the current compatibility wiki. Treat the status as a starting point, not a promise for Android. Read recent reports for crashes, graphical faults, required patches and renderer settings.
- Confirm 64-bit ARM. Verify that the phone uses a 64-bit ARM SoC and that its Android firmware exposes the arm64-v8a environment expected by the fork.
- Investigate GPU drivers. Look for the phone’s exact GPU and Android build, then check whether users report Vulkan or OpenGL issues with your target games. Avoid relying only on a generic chip-family label.
- Assess sustained performance. Prefer long-session evidence with temperatures and frame pacing over a short benchmark. Ask whether performance drops after the phone heats up.
- Leave practical headroom. Choose sufficient RAM and internal storage for the emulator, legally obtained game files, caches, saves and normal Android use. No published number guarantees success, so headroom is a comfort margin rather than a requirement.
- Check controls and display needs. Confirm that your controller, USB or Bluetooth connection, external display and button mapping work with the Android build before committing to a purchase.
- Buy only with a return path. Because the software is experimental and game-specific, a return period is more valuable than a claimed “PS3-ready” label.
A sensible buying framework
If you already own a recent high-end phone
Start by testing the exact game rather than replacing the phone. Install the experimental arm64-v8a build, keep a record of the Android version and renderer, and test a short session followed by a longer session. If the title fails, determine whether the cause is compatibility, a driver problem, a setting or sustained throttling before blaming the hardware.
If you are shopping specifically for PS3 experiments
Target a recent flagship-class 64-bit ARM phone with strong documented GPU drivers and a thermal design intended for sustained gaming. This is a risk-reduction strategy, not a guaranteed specification. Avoid choosing solely by RAM, benchmark peak or the presence of a single impressive demonstration.
If your budget only reaches mid-range hardware
Expect a narrower and more unpredictable experience. It may be suitable for development builds, lighter titles or troubleshooting, but there is no evidence-based threshold at which a mid-range phone becomes universally adequate. Buy only if you accept that some games may never become playable on that device.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Mistake: treating 8 GB RAM as the Android minimum. That figure belongs to Linux ARM64 documentation. Instead: treat RAM as headroom and test the game.
- Mistake: assuming Snapdragon branding guarantees PS3 performance. The available phone example does not establish a requirement or ranking. Instead: evaluate the exact SoC, GPU driver and sustained behavior.
- Mistake: using desktop compatibility labels as Android promises. The wiki is not an Android-only test database. Instead: find Android-specific reports for your title and build.
- Mistake: judging a phone after a five-minute run. Thermal throttling may appear later. Instead: test a representative long session and monitor frame pacing and temperature.
- Mistake: updating blindly after a working setup. Firmware or driver changes can alter emulator behavior. Instead: record versions, back up saves and change one variable at a time.
- Mistake: expecting the experimental fork to behave like a finished console app. Breakage is explicitly warned about. Instead: keep expectations experimental and maintain a fallback device or platform if a specific game matters.
What you should regard as a realistic expectation
A powerful modern Android phone can be a worthwhile platform for trying PS3 emulation, especially when your target game has favorable reports. It is not a substitute for a guaranteed compatibility list. The most defensible purchase rule is to buy the strongest 64-bit ARM phone you can reasonably return, prioritize proven drivers and sustained cooling, and make the game—not the phone’s RAM label—the unit of evaluation.
