The safest starting point is a recent Snapdragon Android device with an Adreno GPU, Vulkan support, enough free memory and storage, and cooling suitable for sustained play. The exact floor depends on the Winlator variant, the game and its graphics API.
The documented minimum for Winlator
For the Winlator WB64 build, the published minimum is Android 9.0 or later, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 or newer processor, an Adreno 610 or newer GPU, Vulkan 1.1 or later, 2 GB of free storage and at least 1 GB of free RAM available to the game. The RAM figure is expressed as available memory and varies with the title. These are application requirements, not a promise that every Windows game will start or run well.

Winlator@Frost is a separate community variant with different figures: Android 8.0 or newer, 3–4 GB of RAM as its minimum wording, 6 GB recommended, 64 GB of internal storage minimum and 128 GB recommended. Do not combine the Frost figures with the WB64 figures; install the variant you intend to use and follow that project’s current README.
| Winlator variant | Android version | Memory guidance | Storage guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winlator WB64 | Android 9.0 or later | At least 1 GB free, depending on the game | 2 GB free minimum |
| Winlator@Frost | Android 8.0 or newer | 3–4 GB minimum; 6 GB recommended | 64 GB minimum; 128 GB recommended |
The WB64 README also recommends an XInput or Xbox-style controller, but a controller is optional. Touch controls can work for some games, while titles designed around a gamepad are usually more practical with a Bluetooth or USB controller.

Why the GPU and driver matter more than the phone’s name
Winlator is not a Windows PC compressed into an Android package. Its official project description says it runs Windows x86_64 applications through Wine and Box86/Box64, with graphics components including Mesa, DXVK and VKD3D. The processor executes translated instructions and the graphics stack translates or maps PC graphics work to Android’s drivers. A phone can therefore meet a paper specification yet fail with a particular game because of an instruction, driver or graphics-API incompatibility.
Adreno is the conservative choice
The Winlator hardware and GPU compatibility guide describes Turnip as an Adreno-specific driver. That makes a Snapdragon system with Adreno graphics the least complicated target when you are choosing hardware for a broad range of 3D games. The guide also documents differences between Adreno generations, so “Snapdragon” alone does not identify performance or compatibility. Check the exact GPU generation and the driver support for the Winlator build you plan to install.
Mali and other GPU families need closer checking
The same guide describes narrower or weaker compatibility paths for Mali graphics. This does not mean every MediaTek or other non-Adreno phone is unusable; it means the driver route and game support require title-specific checking. Look for reports for the exact SoC, GPU, Winlator variant, driver and game rather than assuming that a high benchmark score translates to Windows compatibility.
Vulkan is a requirement, not a performance rating
WB64 lists Vulkan 1.1 or later as its baseline. Vulkan support only confirms that the API is present; it does not tell you whether the driver exposes every feature a game or DXVK/VKD3D path needs. Verify Vulkan support on the device and confirm that the selected build can use its available driver.

How to choose hardware for more than the lightest games
If your goal is a few older 2D or lightly rendered games, the WB64 floor may be sufficient. A broader 3D target needs headroom in several areas at once.
Processor and graphics
Use the app’s stated minimum as a floor, then favor a stronger Snapdragon with Adreno graphics for demanding 3D software. The compatibility guide’s comparisons point toward stronger Snapdragon/Adreno hardware for wider results. It does not establish that all games work on every Snapdragon generation, so treat a chipset recommendation as a screening step, not a guarantee.
RAM
Free RAM is what the container and game can actually use. WB64 names 1 GB free depending on the game, while Frost recommends 6 GB total. Those numbers describe different builds and should not be merged into one universal requirement. More total RAM leaves room for Android services, the container and the game at the same time; it cannot fix an incompatible driver or a title that needs more graphics capability.

The WB64 minimum of 2 GB free covers the application baseline, not an entire PC game library. You also need space for containers, installers, shader or cache data and the game files themselves. Frost’s 64 GB minimum and 128 GB recommendation illustrate the practical headroom needed by that variant. If you use removable storage, confirm that the chosen build supports it and that read/write performance is adequate for your games.

Sustained cooling
Long sessions can behave differently from a short launch test. The WB64 documentation warns that results vary with environmental conditions, simultaneous processing and processor capabilities. That is a reason to value a device with effective cooling and a stable performance mode, not a license to quote a universal temperature or throttling threshold; no standardized cross-phone thermal benchmark is established here.
Controls and display
Touch input is workable for games with simple controls or a configurable overlay. An XInput-compatible gamepad is the better fit for controller-first titles. Also consider screen size, aspect ratio, USB or Bluetooth latency and whether the phone can remain comfortable while connected to a controller and charger.
A practical hardware-audit checklist
Before buying or installing anything, check the phone in this order:
- Identify the exact SoC and GPU. Record the Snapdragon model and Adreno generation, or the non-Adreno GPU family. Do not rely on a retail description that only says “gaming processor.”
- Check the Android version. WB64 requires Android 9.0 or later; Frost lists Android 8.0 or newer. Confirm the installed version, not merely the manufacturer’s original launch version.
- Verify Vulkan. Confirm Vulkan 1.1 or later and check whether the app variant supports the device’s available driver path.
- Measure usable memory. Compare total RAM with the build’s guidance, then check how much remains after Android has started. A phone that technically has enough RAM can still run out when background applications are active.
- Calculate storage headroom. Reserve space for the app, containers, installers and game data instead of comparing only the advertised capacity.
- Check the specific game. Search for reports using the exact game version, Winlator variant, driver and device. A result for another Snapdragon generation or another graphics API is not equivalent evidence.
- Plan controls and cooling. Decide whether touch is acceptable, whether an XInput controller is needed and whether the phone can sustain the intended session without becoming uncomfortable or unstable.
What performance can you realistically expect?
Performance depends on the game engine, resolution, rendering path, translation overhead and driver. The compatibility guide gives examples of expected ranges such as 40–60 frames per second for certain classes of games on recommended Snapdragon 870 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 hardware. Those are the guide’s estimates, not standardized independent tests, and they cannot be applied to every game or device.

Older, less demanding games generally have a wider chance of working. Newer 3D games can be limited by shader compilation, memory, driver features or CPU translation even when the frame rate looks promising in another title. There is no established independent statistic for the percentage of Windows PC games that work on Android, so a device specification cannot be converted into a reliable “number of games supported.”
A demonstration reported by Tom’s Hardware in February 2026 showed several games on a high-end Snapdragon device with 16 GB of RAM. It demonstrates that the category is viable on powerful hardware, but it is one demonstration rather than a representative benchmark. The report also characterizes Android PC emulation as imperfect.

Winlator gives you direct control over containers, compatibility settings and graphics drivers. That flexibility is useful when a title needs a particular Wine, Box64, DXVK or VKD3D configuration, but it also means more troubleshooting.

GameHub is another route discussed in current reporting. Android Central reported its Google Play launch in November 2025, including the ability to sign in to a personal Steam account and download Windows games. The Play Store and direct-download versions have differed in features, so check the current listing and permissions before relying on a specific function. A more guided interface does not remove the underlying hardware and compatibility limits.

In either app, you still need legally obtained game files and a device whose CPU, GPU, driver and memory can handle the title. Steam integration changes how files are obtained; it does not turn an Android phone into a native Windows machine.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying by CPU name alone: Two Snapdragon phones can expose different Adreno generations, drivers and cooling designs.
- Treating the minimum as a target: The WB64 figures are a floor for the app, not a playability promise for a game.
- Mixing variant requirements: Frost’s Android, RAM and storage guidance belongs to Frost; WB64’s figures belong to WB64.
- Ignoring free space: Installing the app with only the stated minimum left can leave no room for containers or game data.
- Assuming a benchmark proves compatibility: Synthetic scores do not test Wine translation, DXVK/VKD3D or a game’s startup path.
- Overlooking sustained use: A short demonstration may not reflect performance after a long session or while other Android processes run.
- Expecting every controller to map correctly: Prefer an XInput-compatible pad for games that require standard controller mappings.
Buying guidance: what to prioritize in a Snapdragon Android gaming phone
For a new purchase, prioritize the exact SoC/GPU combination and driver support before camera features or peak benchmark numbers. A stronger Snapdragon with Adreno graphics, Vulkan 1.1 or newer, at least the memory recommended by your chosen build and ample storage is the conservative specification. If you plan to install multiple large games, 128 GB of storage gives more practical room than the WB64 application’s 2 GB baseline.
Compare candidate phones on seven points: SoC and CPU generation; Adreno or other GPU family; available RAM; usable storage; Android version and Vulkan support; sustained cooling; and controller/display ergonomics. No independent head-to-head device testing establishes a single best model, so tie any performance claim to a named game, app version, device, resolution and source.

If you already own an Android phone
Check the exact Android version, SoC, GPU, Vulkan support, free RAM and free storage against the Winlator variant’s README. Then look for reports for your specific game. Meeting the WB64 minimum means the experiment is plausible; it does not predict a smooth result.
If you are buying specifically for Windows games
Choose a Snapdragon/Adreno device with more capability than the minimum, sufficient memory and storage, and cooling suited to long sessions. Favor a phone with an established driver path and a comfortable way to connect an XInput controller.
If your target is a new, demanding 3D release
Expect the highest uncertainty. Even powerful hardware can encounter title-specific translation or driver problems, and neither Winlator nor a more guided app can guarantee compatibility. Verify a report for the exact game and software combination before treating the phone as a replacement for a Windows gaming PC.
