What an Unlocked Phone Is—and How to Check Yours in 10 Seconds

An unlocked phone is not restricted to one mobile carrier. To check an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for Network Provider Lock: “No SIM restrictions” means it is unlocked. Android has no single reliable menu path across all brands, so check its settings or ask the original carrier. Either way, verify the phone’s compatibility with your next carrier separately.

What is an unlocked phone?

A carrier-unlocked phone is not restricted to a single mobile network. It can use another provider’s SIM or eSIM, provided that provider supports the phone’s exact model. Motorola describes an unlocked phone as one that can recognize SIMs from different networks (Motorola Support).

“Unlocked” answers only whether a carrier restriction applies. It does not establish that the phone will work fully—or at all—on a particular network.

How to check if your phone is unlocked

iPhone: check Network Provider Lock

  1. Open Settings > General > About.
  2. Scroll to Network Provider Lock.
  3. If the status says “No SIM restrictions,” Apple identifies the iPhone as unlocked.

Apple’s instructions say this status display applies on iOS 14 and later. If you have an older iOS version or the status is unclear, ask the carrier that currently provides service to confirm the unlock. Apple does not unlock iPhones; only the current network provider can do that, and processing may take a few days (Apple Support, January 26, 2026).

Android: check settings or contact the original carrier

Android menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and software version. Look in Settings > About phone or in a related SIM or network section for a SIM-lock or network-lock status, if your device provides one. The official guidance cited here does not establish a single path that works across all Android phones.

If you cannot find a clear status, ask the original carrier to check the phone using its official process. Have the IMEI ready if requested; Motorola says its support can use it to check whether a device is registered to a particular network (Motorola Support).

Try another provider’s SIM, but treat the result carefully

If one is available, inserting a SIM from another provider—or testing an eSIM—can provide a useful second check. A request for a network unlock code or a “SIM not supported” message may point to a lock. But no service by itself does not prove the phone is locked: compatibility, a block on the device, activation, and carrier-specific features can also affect the result.

Check compatibility separately before switching

An unlocked phone may still lack the network support needed by your intended carrier, or may work with reduced performance or feature support. Check the exact model with the destination carrier’s official compatibility or bring-your-own-device (BYOD) tool. For example, T-Mobile’s checker treats compatibility, blocked status, unlock confirmation, and eSIM capability as separate results (T-Mobile BYOD checker).

When comparing phones or preparing a switch, verify each of these independently:

  • Carrier lock: Is the phone restricted to its original provider?
  • Compatibility: Does the destination network support the exact model?
  • Blocked status: Does the destination carrier report that it can be used on its network?
  • Needed features: Will features you rely on work, including eSIM if you plan to use it?

Carriers may support a device only partially, and features configured for the original provider may not work the same way on another network. Rogers likewise conditions use on another network on the device being compatible with that network and notes that some features may not work as configured for the original carrier (Rogers Device Unlocking FAQs).

What an unlocked phone does not tell you

  • It does not mean the phone is paid off. Unlock status alone does not settle financing, account standing, or promotional-credit obligations. Check the terms with the seller or original carrier before buying or switching.
  • It does not mean the phone is unblocked. A carrier may report that a phone is not blocked without confirming that it is unlocked; ask what each status means in the carrier’s checker.
  • It does not guarantee international service. The phone still needs to be compatible with a network that provides service at your destination.

If your phone is still locked

Contact the carrier that locked it and follow its current eligibility and unlocking process. For an iPhone, only the current network provider can unlock it. Once that provider confirms the unlock, follow its instructions; Apple’s guidance includes inserting another carrier’s SIM and, in some situations, backing up, erasing, and restoring the iPhone (Apple Support).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android unlocking steps depend on the carrier and device. Motorola lists carrier-specific routes and notes that some phones cannot be unlocked because of network or software limitations (Motorola Support). Confirm the process directly with the original carrier rather than assuming a universal method or timeline.
