Short answer: an Android launcher replaces the phone’s home-screen layer. It controls how you arrange apps, shortcuts, widgets, folders and (depending on the launcher) the app drawer, icons, gestures and search. It does not replace Android or give you control of every screen and system service.
The Android Open Source Project puts it plainly: “Android includes a launcher application (home screen) and support for third-party applications to replace the device launcher (home screen).” Think of a launcher as the interface you see after unlocking and pressing Home, not as a new operating system.

What an Android launcher is
A launcher is the system app responsible for the home screen and, on most phones, the app-drawer experience. It displays your wallpaper, places app icons and folders, hosts widgets, handles home-screen pages and responds to launcher gestures such as swipes or double taps when those gestures are supported.

Android also supports third-party launchers that can become the default Home app. Installing one changes the presentation layer while Android continues to provide the kernel, system settings, permissions, notifications, lock screen, installed applications and hardware support.

This distinction matters when choosing a launcher. You can redesign the way you reach apps without replacing the operating system underneath. A launcher can make a crowded phone easier to scan, create a minimalist list, or add shortcuts and gestures; it cannot turn an Android phone into a different platform.
What changes when you install one
Home-screen pages and favorites
The launcher determines how many home-screen pages you have, how icons are placed and how your favorite apps are presented. You can generally add an app to Home, move it between pages, remove it from a page, and change the grid or spacing when the launcher exposes those controls.
Removing an icon from Home does not uninstall the app. Android distinguishes the two actions: Remove takes the shortcut off the home screen, while Uninstall removes the application from the device. A launcher’s “hide” function is also a visibility feature, not proof that the app has been deleted or disabled.
App drawer organization
Launchers choose how you browse the full app list. A conventional design uses a paged or scrolling grid. Other designs use categories, search-first navigation or a vertical list. Drawer folders, sorting rules, hidden-app lists and alphabetization are launcher-specific, so read the feature list for the particular app rather than assuming every launcher offers them.
Widgets and app shortcuts
Widgets are supplied by apps; the launcher hosts them on a home-screen page. A calendar, weather panel or music control remains part of its original app, while the launcher decides where it can be placed and how it participates in the layout. Resizing is possible only when the widget itself supports resizing.

App shortcuts are actions exposed by an app, such as opening a particular conversation or starting a navigation route. A compatible launcher can place those shortcuts on Home, but it cannot invent shortcuts that the app does not provide.
Folders and icon presentation
You can usually group apps in folders and name those folders. Icon shape, size, labels, padding, adaptive-icon treatment and icon-pack support vary by launcher and by the icon resources supplied by the app or pack. A launcher may let you change the visual treatment without changing the underlying app.
Gestures, badges and search
Some launchers add gestures such as swiping on the home screen, tapping an empty area or swiping an icon to trigger an action. Notification badges, home-screen search, drawer search and quick access to settings are also optional features. They work only within the permissions and APIs Android exposes, and some gestures can conflict with the phone’s system navigation mode.

These examples illustrate design choices, not a universal ranking. Features can change with updates, Android versions and device firmware.

The practical comparison is not “which launcher is best?” It is whether the launcher’s navigation model matches your habits. A grid can make many apps visible at once; a list can reduce visual clutter; a feature-rich drawer can help organize a large library. Test your essential tasks—opening a widget, finding a rarely used app, invoking a shortcut and returning Home—before moving your entire layout.

What a launcher cannot change
It does not replace Android
The launcher is one application in Android’s system. It does not replace the operating system, change the phone’s Android version, add hardware features or rewrite the system framework. Security updates, kernel behavior, battery-management policy and manufacturer firmware remain controlled by Android and the device maker.

Do not assume a launcher can redesign the lock screen, notification shade, Quick Settings, Settings app, keyboard, power menu or every recent-apps view. Android may expose limited integrations, and a manufacturer may impose additional restrictions. A launcher can offer a shortcut to a setting, but that is different from replacing the setting screen.
It cannot redesign an individual app
Once you open an app, that app’s own interface, navigation and account controls apply. A launcher can create a shortcut to an app or activity when Android permits it; it cannot change the app’s internal screens without support from the app developer or special system access.
It cannot guarantee better performance or battery life
A lightweight layout may feel less distracting, but installing a launcher does not guarantee faster performance, longer battery life or lower memory use. Widgets, animations, live wallpapers, background services and accessibility features can affect resource use. Results depend on the launcher, the phone, Android version and your configuration.
It does not automatically bypass permissions
Launcher features are constrained by Android permissions and platform roles. For example, Android 15’s Private Space behavior requires a launcher to hold the ROLE_HOME role and declare ACCESS_HIDDEN_PROFILES for apps in Private Space to appear, along with additional handling requirements. If a launcher lacks the required integration, Private Space apps may not appear in its drawer even though they remain installed.

How to install and make a launcher the default
Menu names differ among manufacturers and Android versions. Google’s Android Help notes that steps can vary by device, so use the following as a map rather than a promise of identical wording.
- Install the launcher from your phone’s app store. Check the app’s Android-version requirements and permissions before opening it.
- Open the launcher once. It may offer an onboarding flow, import your existing layout or ask you to choose a navigation style.
- Open Settings and search for “default apps” or “Home app.” On some phones this is under Apps; on others it is under Home screen, Default applications or a similarly named section.
- Select the new launcher as the Home app. Confirm the system prompt. Press Home to test it, then open the app drawer, a widget and a folder.
- Grant only permissions you understand. Notification access, accessibility access or usage access may enable specific features, but they also provide additional visibility or control. If a feature works without a permission, do not grant it solely because the launcher asks.
- Keep the previous launcher available while testing. If the new layout has a problem, return to the same Home-app setting and choose the original launcher.
If you cannot find a Home-app choice, use Settings search for “launcher,” “Home,” or “default.” The exact path is controlled by the phone maker and firmware, not by the launcher developer alone.

When Android keeps reverting to the old launcher
Check that the new app is installed for the current user profile, that it is enabled, and that the Home-app selection was confirmed after installation. A system update, work profile policy or device-management rule can restore the manufacturer launcher. Repeating the selection after a reboot can reveal whether the setting persists.
Xiaomi HyperOS example
Niagara’s support documentation, last updated June 23, 2025, describes an issue on Xiaomi devices running HyperOS 2.0 and above that can prevent a third-party launcher from being set as default and provides a workaround. Treat that as a vendor- and firmware-specific example, not as a universal rule for every Xiaomi phone or every later build. Check the current behavior on your exact model and software version before relying on any workaround.

Widgets or shortcuts are missing
Confirm that the app providing the widget is installed for the same user profile and that the widget supports your launcher and Android version. Some work-profile or Private Space apps are intentionally hidden. A launcher update can also change the available widget picker or shortcut list.
Gestures conflict with system navigation
Try the launcher’s gesture settings with both three-button and gesture navigation if your phone allows that choice. A swipe from the edge may belong to Android’s Back action rather than the launcher. Disable overlapping launcher gestures first, then re-enable only the ones you can trigger reliably.
The launcher crashes or feels incomplete
Update the launcher and Android, then test with live wallpapers, third-party icon packs and optional accessibility services disabled. If the problem disappears, re-enable those components one at a time. You can clear the launcher’s cache, but clearing its data may erase its layout and settings, so export or back up the layout first when the launcher supports it.
Choosing a launcher by your priorities
For a familiar grid
Look for adjustable rows and columns, icon labels, folders, a conventional drawer and reliable widget placement. This suits users who want a different visual style without changing their basic muscle memory.
For a minimal, list-first experience
Check how quickly you can reach favorites, search the full app list and open widgets. A list interface can reduce the number of home-screen decisions, but it may require more scrolling to reach an infrequently used app.
For organization-heavy setups
Prioritize drawer folders, sorting, hidden-app controls, custom gestures and backup/export tools. Verify whether those functions are available in the edition you plan to use and whether they survive a launcher reset.
For privacy-sensitive use
Review the launcher’s permissions and data practices, then test Android features such as work profiles and Private Space. A launcher should not be expected to make a hidden app visible or invisible when Android’s role and permission rules prohibit that behavior.
Before you switch: a practical checklist
- Record your current home-screen arrangement or enable the launcher’s backup option.
- Confirm the launcher supports your Android version and navigation mode.
- Test your most-used widget, app shortcut, folder and gesture.
- Check how the launcher handles work-profile and Private Space apps.
- Find the Home-app setting so you can switch back quickly.
- Separate “remove from Home” from “uninstall” when cleaning up icons.
- Review permissions, notification access and accessibility access before enabling optional features.
The boundary in one sentence
An Android launcher changes the phone’s home-screen experience—layout, app access and launcher-defined presentation—while Android continues to control the operating system and protected system interfaces. The exact reach depends on the launcher, Android version, permissions and the phone maker’s firmware.
