Alexa+ is Amazon’s generative-AI upgrade to Alexa. In the United States, Prime members get unlimited Alexa+ at no extra charge, while non-Prime customers can use a limited text-chat tier or pay $19.99 per month for unlimited full access. It is more conversational and personalized than the traditional Alexa experience, and Amazon says it can complete tasks such as reservations, ride bookings, shopping and smart-home routines where the required integrations are available.
What is Alexa+?
Alexa+ is Amazon’s next-generation assistant built on generative artificial intelligence. Amazon describes it as an extension of the familiar Alexa experience, but with substantially broader conversation, memory and task abilities. Instead of treating every request as a separate command, Alexa+ is designed to follow a discussion, retain relevant context and use information you have shared to help with later requests.

Is Alexa+ free with Prime?
For customers in the United States, Amazon says a Prime membership includes full, unlimited Alexa+ for the household at no additional charge. That access applies across compatible Alexa-enabled devices, Alexa.com and the Alexa app. The inclusion is part of the Prime benefit rather than a separate Alexa+ charge.
Amazon announced the U.S. Prime arrangement and the non-Prime tiers in its September 1, 2026 availability update. Read the current terms at Amazon’s U.S. announcement.
Prime inclusion does not make every Alexa+ feature universal. Device compatibility, third-party integrations, language support and regional rollouts can limit what your account can do. Amazon also notes that some Ring capabilities may require an additional Ring subscription; that subscription is not included with Alexa+.

Amazon says Alexa+ is available to customers in the United States and Canada and is in early access in several additional countries. Prices, languages and features can differ outside those markets, so check the offer displayed for your Amazon account before subscribing.
What a full Alexa+ subscription includes
Longer, more natural conversations
Alexa+ is designed to understand follow-up questions and ongoing conversations. You can ask for an initial answer, refine it and refer back to earlier details instead of restating the entire request. Amazon also says the assistant can remember context over time, although the useful context depends on what you provide and on the features available to your account.

Personalized help
Amazon says customers can share preferences and information such as recipes, important dates, dietary needs and documents. Alexa+ can use that context in later responses or tasks. For example, a dietary preference can inform a recipe conversation, while a date or calendar detail can be used when planning. Treat this as an Amazon-stated capability, not a guarantee that every document type or workflow is supported in every country.

Actions on your behalf
The upgrade is intended to move beyond answering questions. Amazon lists restaurant discovery and reservations, takeout orders, ride bookings, home-repair scheduling, calendar coordination and shopping among the possible tasks. These actions require the relevant service connection and may ask you to confirm details before anything is booked or purchased. Availability can change by region and integration.
Smart-home routines and integrations
Alexa+ can control compatible smart-home products and build or manage routines. Amazon names Philips Hue and Roborock among its examples and also discusses Ring-related capabilities. Those products are optional integrations, not requirements for an Alexa+ subscription. A device or service may need its own account, setup or subscription, and the exact controls depend on the integration.
More ways to access the assistant
Full Alexa+ is not confined to a smart speaker. Amazon lists Alexa.com and the Alexa mobile app alongside compatible Alexa-enabled devices. Its product announcement also describes Alexa+ experiences on Fire TV and in the Amazon Music app. The interface and available actions can vary between voice, text and screen-based experiences.
How Alexa+ differs from the Alexa you already use
Amazon positions regular Alexa as the established voice-assistant experience for commands, information and device control. Alexa+ keeps that foundation but adds a generative conversation layer, longer context, personalization and task-taking features. The table summarizes the distinction without implying that every older Alexa device receives every new capability.

The key difference is not simply a new voice or a larger answer database. Alexa+ is meant to maintain context and coordinate multi-step work. Amazon’s descriptions are product claims; they are not independent tests of accuracy, speed or reliability.
Do you need an Echo device?
No universal Echo requirement is stated. Amazon lists Alexa.com and the Alexa app as access routes, so a customer can use Alexa+ for text or supported app interactions without buying a speaker. An Echo device is useful if you want hands-free voice conversations around the home, but purchasing one is optional where your account and region support the web or app experience.
If you plan to use an existing Echo, check Amazon’s current compatibility information for the exact model, account and country. The reviewed Amazon help material does not provide a complete, current model-by-model list, and compatibility can change as Alexa+ rolls out. Amazon’s help page is About Alexa+.
How to start using Alexa+
- Confirm your market. Open the Alexa app or Alexa.com while signed in and check whether Alexa+ is offered for your country. Amazon documents full availability in the United States and Canada, with early access in additional countries.
- Check your Prime status. In the United States and Canada, a qualifying Prime household should see full Alexa+ included rather than a separate monthly charge. Verify that the account you use for Alexa is the account with the Prime membership.
- Choose the appropriate tier. If you are not a Prime member in the United States or Canada, start with the free chat option if you only need occasional text answers. Select the paid unlimited option when you need full access across supported devices and services.
- Sign in on your preferred channel. Use Alexa.com, the Alexa mobile app or a compatible Alexa-enabled device. On an Echo, begin with the normal Alexa wake-word interaction; on the web or app, use the available chat or Alexa interface.
- Connect services only when needed. For reservations, rides, shopping, calendars or smart-home routines, follow the prompts to connect the relevant service or device. Read each confirmation carefully before authorizing a booking, purchase or schedule change.
- Test a simple conversation first. Ask a question, follow up without repeating the context and then try a routine or supported device command. If an action is unavailable, the likely causes are regional rollout, an unsupported device, a missing integration or an account limitation.
What the usage figures do—and do not—show
Amazon has published early usage observations to illustrate interest in Alexa+. Its U.S. availability article says customers are interacting with Alexa+ “more than twice as much overall.” Amazon Canada reports “2x more” engagement than the previous generation, a 60% increase in smart-home feature usage and five times as many recipe requests. These are Amazon-published observations, not independent studies; the cited announcements do not provide detailed methodology alongside the figures. They indicate reported usage, not improved factual accuracy or guaranteed performance.

Which Alexa+ tier makes sense?
Choose Prime-included Alexa+
If you already have Prime in the United States or Canada, there is no separate Alexa+ fee in the published terms. The decision is mainly whether the conversational and task features are useful to your household and whether your devices and services are supported.

The U.S. and Canadian free options are designed for non-Prime customers who want occasional text-based answers, planning, research or topic exploration. Usage limits make this tier less suitable for continuous conversations, voice use across devices or frequent task automation.
Consider the paid U.S. tier
At $19.99 per month in the United States, the standalone plan is aimed at non-Prime households that need unlimited full access. Compare that recurring cost with the value you place on hands-free use, personalization and connected actions; the free tier may be sufficient if you only ask occasional questions.

Canada’s published standalone price is CAD $27.99 per month plus tax, not the U.S. dollar price. Other countries may have different currencies, taxes, languages, limits or rollout status. The offer shown in your account is the authoritative price for your location.
Common limitations to expect
- Compatibility is conditional: “Alexa-enabled” does not establish that every model supports every Alexa+ feature. Check the current compatibility guidance for your device.
- Integrations control what Alexa+ can do: A reservation, ride, repair appointment or shopping action depends on the connected service and its regional availability.
- Feature availability varies by country: Amazon explicitly says availability and features differ by region, especially during early access.
- Some services may cost extra: Alexa+ does not include third-party memberships or subscriptions, including any additional subscription required for certain Ring features.
- Free access is limited: Non-Prime chat is usage-limited, so it is not equivalent to the unlimited full tier.
- Amazon’s performance claims are not independent results: Reported engagement figures should not be read as proof that Alexa+ always gives more accurate answers.

U.S. and Canadian Prime members receive full access under Amazon’s published terms; non-Prime customers can experiment with limited free chat or, in the United States, pay $19.99 per month for unlimited full access. Canada’s standalone price is CAD $27.99 per month plus tax. You do not automatically need an Echo, but you do need a supported account, region, device and integration for each feature you want to use.
