What allocation unit size should you choose for large files on NTFS?

Keep the NTFS default 4 KB for a general-purpose volume. Choose 64 KB only when the volume is dedicated to large-file workloads covered by Microsoft guidance, such as VHDX files larger than 1 TB or Windows Server Data Deduplication. Microsoft community guidance also commonly points to 64 KB for Hyper-V and SQL Server data or log volumes, but those designs should be validated against the complete storage layout. A large disk by itself is not a reason to change the setting.

What an NTFS allocation unit is

An allocation unit, also called an NTFS cluster, is the smallest block of volume space that NTFS assigns to a file or to a portion of a file. NTFS grows a file in whole-cluster increments. If a file ends partway through its final cluster, the unused bytes in that cluster remain reserved for that file as slack space.

The allocation unit size is selected when a volume is formatted. Common choices include 4 KB (4,096 bytes) and 64 KB (65,536 bytes). The setting applies to the entire volume, not to individual folders or files. Changing it later requires reformatting, so the data must be copied or restored elsewhere first.

Choose by workload, not by disk capacity

Volume workload Recommended starting point Why
Documents, applications, photos and files of mixed sizes 4 KB (default) Limits slack space for small files and offers the broadest compatibility.
VHDX files larger than 1 TB on a dedicated volume 64 KB plus large FRS, as documented by Microsoft Matches Microsoft’s explicit large-file formatting instruction.
Windows Server Data Deduplication volume 64 KB plus large FRS, as documented by Microsoft Matches Microsoft’s documented feature guidance.
Hyper-V virtual-disk volume 64 KB is a Microsoft community recommendation Virtual-disk I/O is dominated by large, structured files; confirm it fits the storage design.
SQL Server data or log volume 64 KB is a Microsoft community recommendation Database files and logs usually issue large, regular I/O; test and validate with the database design.
Many small files Usually 4 KB A larger cluster can reserve substantially more space than the file actually contains.
Movie, backup or archive files mixed with ordinary files Usually 4 KB unless the volume is dedicated to large files Large media files gain little practical advantage if the same volume also stores small metadata, thumbnails or application files.

The table describes starting points rather than performance guarantees. The right value depends on file-size distribution, access pattern, storage hardware and the applications using the volume.

When 64 KB is the right fit

VHDX files over 1 TB

Microsoft’s large-file instruction specifically cites .vhdx files larger than 1 TB. For a volume dedicated to that type of virtual disk, the documented format uses a 64 KB allocation unit and enables a large File Record Segment (large FRS). The guidance is about the workload and file size, not the nominal capacity of the physical disk.

Data Deduplication

Microsoft also gives the 64 KB and large-FRS configuration for volumes used with Windows Server Data Deduplication. If deduplication is planned, follow the feature’s documented requirements rather than applying a generic “large disk” rule.

Hyper-V and SQL Server

Microsoft community guidance commonly recommends 64 KB for Hyper-V and SQL Server data or log volumes. These workloads often use large virtual-disk or database files and predictable I/O patterns. Treat that recommendation as workload-specific design guidance: controller settings, storage resiliency, caching, queue depth, database file layout and the hypervisor configuration can matter as much as the cluster size.

Why larger clusters can help large files

A sequential file needs fewer allocation units when each unit is larger. A 1 TB file represented with 64 KB clusters has one quarter as many clusters as it would with 16 KB clusters and one-sixteenth as many as with 4 KB clusters. Fewer allocation units can reduce allocation metadata and bookkeeping for some workloads, particularly when applications read and write large, sequential ranges.

That mechanism does not create a universal speed increase. Storage devices, fragmentation, compression, caching, random versus sequential access, queueing and application behavior all influence results. Microsoft’s guidance notes that any benefit depends on the deployment and workload. Without a benchmark of your own configuration, do not promise that 64 KB will be faster.

The slack-space cost of 64 KB

NTFS rounds each file’s allocated space up to a whole number of clusters. A 1 KB file on a 64 KB volume can therefore reserve a full 64 KB allocation unit. On a 4 KB volume, the same file generally needs one 4 KB unit. The difference is repeated for every file, not just once per folder.

For illustration, 100,000 files that are each 1 KB would require roughly 6.1 GB of cluster space with 64 KB clusters versus about 0.4 GB with 4 KB clusters, before accounting for NTFS metadata and other overhead. Real directories contain files of many sizes, so the exact result varies, but the direction is consistent: larger clusters increase slack when many files are smaller than the cluster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large media or backup files have little slack in either configuration because their final cluster is a tiny fraction of the total. The decision becomes important when a supposedly “large-file” volume also contains sidecar files, indexes, logs, thumbnails, installers or other small objects.

Formatting a 64 KB large-file volume

Microsoft documents a PowerShell Format-Volume command that sets -AllocationUnitSize 65536 and enables -UseLargeFRS. A representative elevated command is:

Format-Volume -DriveLetter X -FileSystem NTFS -AllocationUnitSize 65536 -UseLargeFRS

Replace X with the intended drive letter and verify the target carefully. Formatting destroys the existing file-system contents. Run the command only in an elevated PowerShell session and only after the data has been backed up or migrated.

Microsoft also documents an elevated command-line form using the large-volume switch /L and a 64 KB allocation unit switch /A:64k:

format X: /FS:NTFS /A:64K /L

The switches express the same design choice: 64 KB clusters and a large File Record Segment. Use the syntax supported by the Windows version you administer, and check the target volume before confirming the format.

What happens if you change an existing volume

NTFS does not provide an in-place switch that converts a populated volume from 4 KB to 64 KB clusters. The practical process is a migration:

  1. Inventory the files and applications that use the volume. Separate genuinely large, sequential data from small-file content.
  2. Make a verified backup or copy the data to another volume. Include permissions, ownership, timestamps, reparse points and application-specific metadata when those matter.
  3. Schedule downtime for applications, virtual machines, databases and services that have open files.
  4. Format the empty volume with the chosen allocation unit. For the documented large-file case, use 64 KB and large FRS; for general use, retain the 4 KB default.
  5. Restore or migrate the data, then update drive letters, mount points, service paths and backup jobs.
  6. Validate that applications can open their files and that the expected free-space and performance characteristics are present before retiring the original copy.

Because a reformat is destructive, a backup that has not been tested is not a sufficient migration plan. Keep the source data until the restored volume and its applications have been verified.

Is 64 KB faster than the 4 KB default?

There is no universal winner. A larger cluster can reduce allocation-unit counts for large sequential files, but it can also increase slack and does not remove bottlenecks elsewhere. An SSD, RAID set, storage-area network, virtualized datastore or hard disk can each behave differently. Random small-block workloads may see no benefit, while a dedicated virtual-disk volume may align better with 64 KB clusters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not select 64 KB merely because a disk is large, because a file is measured in gigabytes, or because a benchmark from another storage stack showed an improvement. If performance is the reason for changing the setting, test representative application operations on the actual storage design and compare throughput, latency, queueing and free-space impact.

Capacity and compatibility considerations

NTFS volume and file-size limits depend on cluster size and Windows version. Microsoft’s current NTFS overview lists 4 KB as the default and shows larger theoretical limits as cluster size increases. Those are file-system limits, not promises that every application can create or manage files of that size. Backup software, database engines, virtualization tools and other services may impose lower limits.

Compatibility is another reason to keep 4 KB on mixed-use volumes. A workload-specific 64 KB format is still NTFS, but software may have assumptions about alignment, sparse files, compression, deduplication or other features. Check the requirements for the applications and Windows roles that will own the volume before formatting it.

Practical decision checklist

  • Identify the files: Estimate how many files are below 64 KB and how many are large sequential objects.
  • Identify the owner: Decide whether the volume is general-purpose, a dedicated virtual-disk store, a database volume or a Data Deduplication target.
  • Check documented requirements: For VHDX files larger than 1 TB and Data Deduplication, Microsoft documents 64 KB with large FRS.
  • Account for slack: Model the space cost of small files before choosing 64 KB.
  • Plan migration: Changing the cluster size means formatting, restoring data and reconnecting applications.
  • Validate performance: Treat 64 KB as a design option, not a guaranteed speed setting, and test the real workload when performance is the objective.

Examples

One workstation data drive

A drive containing office documents, source code, photos, browser data and application folders should remain at 4 KB. Even if several video files are present, the mixed population makes the default the safer balance of space efficiency and compatibility.

A dedicated virtual-machine repository

A volume reserved for VHDX files larger than 1 TB fits Microsoft’s documented large-file case. Format it with 64 KB allocation units and large FRS, then confirm that the hypervisor, backup system and storage platform support the planned layout.

A media archive with no small-file workload

A volume containing only large movie masters or backup images can technically use 64 KB, but the benefit is workload-dependent and usually modest compared with the cost of reformatting. If the archive may later acquire catalogs, thumbnails, project files or application data, 4 KB avoids locking in the larger slack-space cost.

A SQL Server data and log design

Microsoft community guidance commonly starts at 64 KB for SQL Server data and log volumes. Confirm the choice with the database administrator and the storage vendor’s design, especially where snapshots, thin provisioning, deduplication or replication are involved.
