The exact view depends on the assistant, your account, your region and the settings you have enabled. No single rule says that every assistant can read all of your browsing or purchase history.
The important distinction is between data an assistant can access while answering you and data its provider may retain or use for service operations, personalization or model improvement. Those are related but separate questions.

What an AI shopping assistant can see
An assistant starts with the information in the current interaction. It may then receive extra context from integrations you enabled or from the service’s own account systems. The following categories are possible, not universal permissions.

A product’s privacy notice and settings determine which rows apply. Seeing a service listed as capable of using a type of data does not prove that the feature is active for every user.

What you share in the current conversation
Text, images, files and imported material
Gemini’s notice says users can provide messages, files, images, imported chats and browser-page content. If you upload a receipt to identify a product or paste a page for comparison, that material becomes part of the interaction’s input. The assistant cannot infer that you own a product merely because it is mentioned; it sees the content you supplied and any additional context the feature is authorized to retrieve.
Voice and live interactions
In Gemini Live interactions, the notice describes transcripts and recordings. A spoken shopping question can therefore create both an audio interaction and a text representation, subject to the service’s settings and retention rules. Check the Live-specific controls rather than assuming that deleting a text conversation handles every associated recording.
Screen and browser sharing
Some experiences can use a screen, an open browser page or a page URL. That is different from silently reading every tab. A page-aware feature normally receives the page or screen you selected, while a connected browser feature may provide broader context as described in its permission prompt. Read that prompt before enabling the connection.
Can AI shopping assistants see your browsing history?
Sometimes, but not automatically in every product. Browsing history can enter an assistant’s context in several distinct ways:

- You share a page, tab, screenshot or URL in the chat.
- You connect a browser or service that supplies page context.
- The provider uses account-level activity, such as search or video history, for personalization.
- A retail account supplies product views, orders or saved preferences to its shopping assistant.
Gemini’s disclosure lists Chrome page context and URL, information from connected apps and other Google services, and signals from some device or remote-browser experiences. It also mentions Search or YouTube history in the information that may be available through connected services. Those disclosures describe possible sources, not a guarantee that a particular Gemini feature has access to all of them.
Private browsing, deleting one conversation or removing a single permission should not be treated as a universal off switch. Each control affects a particular service or data store. Verify the assistant’s connected-app, browser-context and activity settings separately.
How retail assistants use shopping history
Amazon Rufus as a concrete example
Amazon describes Rufus as a shopping assistant that can connect a current request with past Amazon shopping activity. It can help discover products, answer questions about remembered shopping information, compare options and add products to a cart for later checkout. That makes shopping history directly relevant: a request such as “find replacement filters for the one I bought” can depend on the retail account’s records rather than only on the words in the new prompt.
Amazon quotes Rajiv Mehta, vice president of Search and Conversational Shopping, describing an assistant that “knows you and your preferences,” helps discover products, compare options and prices, support buying decisions and take action. The practical implication is that personalization and action features require more account context than a one-off product question.

What remembered information means
“Remembered” does not necessarily mean an assistant has a complete, permanent copy of everything you have ever done. It can refer to records the retailer makes available for a feature, saved preferences, order information or context retained under that service’s account rules. Ask the assistant what shopping information it remembers, then inspect the account controls that govern the underlying records.
Assistant visibility is not the same as provider use
There are two separate questions:
- Could the assistant receive the data? This concerns prompts, uploads, permissions, connected accounts and context supplied during a request.
- What may the provider do with that data? This concerns service delivery, security, personalization, retention, human review and model-improvement policies.
Google says Gemini activity can be used to provide, maintain, improve, personalize and customize Gemini Apps. Its notice also says some collected data may be reviewed by human reviewers. OpenAI says consumer content may be used to improve model performance depending on your settings and account type. These are provider-specific disclosures; they are not evidence that every shopping assistant follows the same practice.
A feature can therefore have narrow real-time access but broad account-level retention, or broad context access while offering an opt-out from model improvement. Read both the assistant’s feature permissions and the provider’s data-use controls.

How long data may remain
Retention periods are not interchangeable. A setting for automatic activity deletion is different from a safety hold on temporary conversations, and neither necessarily deletes records held in another service.

Google and Gemini
- Open Gemini’s settings and review connected apps. Disconnect services you do not need for shopping tasks.
- Check whether the feature can use browser or page context, screen sharing, location or device permissions. Disable each permission that is unnecessary.
- Review Gemini Apps Activity and choose the auto-delete period that fits your needs: 3 months, 18 months (the stated default), 36 months or indefinite.
- Review your broader Google account activity controls. Search, Maps and Shopping activity may be saved to Search Services History, while some other Google-service activity may be saved to Web & App Activity, depending on settings.
- Delete records in the specific service that created them. Google notes that changing Gemini settings does not change other Google settings, and deleting Gemini activity does not delete data saved in other Google services.
OpenAI consumer services
- Open Settings and go to Data Controls. Review the option governing whether consumer content can be used to improve model performance.
- Check Memory settings and remove saved memories you no longer want used for personalization.
- Use Temporary Chat for conversations where you do not want them saved as ordinary chat history. Temporary Chats may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety.
- Clear individual conversations or use the available deletion controls. Cleared chats are documented as deleted within 30 days, subject to exceptions.
- If you use a work or school workspace, confirm the administrator’s policy. Available controls depend on plan, account type and workspace settings.
A retired browser product should not be treated as a current privacy route. The Atlas help page says Atlas is retired and that its browser data and ChatGPT conversations are separate, so removing or changing one category does not automatically change the other.
A practical privacy checklist before asking for shopping help
- Remove order numbers, full addresses, payment details and loyalty IDs from screenshots unless the task truly needs them.
- Crop receipts and shipping labels to the product information required for the answer.
- Use a generic description when a precise brand, model or account identifier is unnecessary.
- Check the page or screen you are sharing for open tabs, notifications and personal messages.
- Review connected-app permissions and disconnect them after a one-time task if ongoing access is unnecessary.
- Inspect both assistant-specific settings and the provider’s account-level privacy controls.
- Ask what the assistant remembers, then delete the relevant memory, activity or conversation using the control that owns it.
- Do not assume that deleting a chat removes data copied into a connected shopping, search or browser service.
Common misunderstandings and fixes
“If it can recommend a product, it must know my entire purchase history.”
Not necessarily. A recommendation may use only the current prompt, a shared page, a saved preference or a limited retail record. Ask which information the feature used and inspect the account connection.

“Turning off Gemini activity changes every Google history setting.”
It does not. Gemini controls and other Google-service controls are separate, so review Search, Maps, Shopping and Web & App Activity settings individually.
“Temporary means no copy exists.”
OpenAI documents up to 30 days of possible Temporary Chat retention for safety. Temporary describes the chat’s product treatment, not an immediate zero-retention guarantee.
“Deleting a conversation deletes all related data.”
Deletion applies to the specified conversation or service and can have exceptions. Connected-service records, account history and saved memories may require separate actions.
Bottom line for shoppers
Give an AI shopping assistant only the context needed for the decision. Treat page sharing, connected apps, shopping history, memory, account activity and model-improvement settings as separate levers. The assistant’s ability to personalize a recommendation can be useful, but the same context can reveal your purchases, preferences, routines or location. Check the exact permissions and retention terms for the service you are using instead of relying on a blanket assumption about what “AI” can see.
