AI manuscript review is a bounded assistant, not a scientific referee. It can improve language, summarize and organize literature, check explicit formatting requirements, and flag possible inconsistencies or methodological concerns for a qualified person to investigate. It cannot certify that a study happened as described, that its data and statistics are valid, that references are genuine and supportive, that text is original, or that conclusions follow from the results.
Use an AI review as triage: let it identify items that deserve attention, then verify every consequential suggestion against the protocol, data, source papers, journal policy, and disciplinary expertise. There is no single independently validated accuracy percentage that applies to all AI manuscript-review systems or fields.

What “AI manuscript review” includes
The label covers several different activities, and their reliability is not interchangeable. A language assistant may edit grammar and readability without evaluating the science. A checklist tool may look for required sections, reporting items, or formatting patterns. A general-purpose large language model may summarize a paper, compare passages, explain statistical output, or point out an apparent contradiction. A specialized screening system may produce possible citation, plagiarism, image, bias, or methodological alerts.
Those outputs answer different questions. “Is this sentence clear?” is a surface-level question with a relatively observable answer. “Does this design identify the claimed causal effect?” requires domain knowledge, access to the underlying study materials, and independent reasoning. Treating both as the same kind of automated review is the source of many bad decisions.

What AI can help detect or improve
Language, grammar, and readability
AI is most dependable when the requested task is visible in the text. It can identify spelling and grammar errors, awkward constructions, inconsistent terminology, excessive passive voice, unclear transitions, and sentences that are difficult to parse. It can suggest a plainer explanation of a technical passage or flag where an abstract does not match the wording of the results section.
These suggestions still need author review. An edit that improves readability can accidentally change a qualifier, statistical meaning, tense, or level of certainty. “Associated with” must not become “caused,” and a confidence interval must not be described as a probability about the parameter unless the analysis supports that interpretation.

When the criteria are stated clearly, an AI system can scan for missing or misplaced material. Examples include an absent methods subsection, an unlabelled figure, incomplete conflict-of-interest information, missing keywords, inconsistent headings, or a checklist item that has no corresponding text.
This works because the tool is matching observable features to an explicit specification. It does not establish that the methods are adequate or that a reported control was actually run. A manuscript can contain every required heading and still have a flawed design.
Summaries and reference organization
AI can condense a supplied article, group references by topic, draft a chronology of findings, or suggest where a literature review appears to have a gap. It can also extract recurring concepts from a large reference list and help an author decide which papers need closer reading.
Every source and every resulting claim must be checked by a human. A summary can omit a limitation, invert a result, merge two studies, or attribute a conclusion to the wrong paper. A “gap” may disappear when an unindexed or differently worded study is found. Treat generated literature maps as navigation aids, not as evidence.
Possible inconsistencies and red flags
An AI reviewer may notice that a sample size in the abstract differs from the methods, that a table total does not match the text, that a stated study date conflicts with a figure label, or that a conclusion appears stronger than the results described. It may flag an unusual citation, a missing control, an unexplained exclusion, or a statistical test that seems mismatched to the stated outcome.
These are leads for investigation. A flagged discrepancy can be an innocent typographical error, a legitimate analysis subset, or a result that the model misunderstood. Conversely, an unflagged problem is not evidence that none exists. The reviewer must inspect the original protocol, data, calculations, and source material.

Statistical explanations and suggested tests
AI can explain what a p-value, confidence interval, regression coefficient, or model diagnostic generally represents. It can propose a candidate test or list assumptions that might need checking. That can help a researcher formulate questions for a statistician or locate the relevant part of a methods guide.
It cannot safely determine from prose alone that assumptions hold, that a model is correctly specified, that missing data were handled appropriately, or that a suggested test answers the stated causal question. The researcher must rerun or inspect the analysis, verify the data structure, and assess the assumptions independently.

What AI cannot safely certify
Truth of the data and adequacy of the sample
Text alone cannot prove that participants were recruited as stated, measurements were taken, instruments were calibrated, observations were not fabricated, or a sample represents the target population. An AI can repeat a plausible description of a procedure without seeing laboratory records, raw files, consent documentation, preregistration, or audit trails.
It also cannot decide whether the sample size is adequate for the effect and precision claimed, whether selection or attrition created bias, or whether a control condition was genuinely comparable. Those judgments require the protocol, domain expertise, and often access to data and study records.
Causal identification and scientific reasoning
A coherent narrative is not the same as a valid causal argument. An AI may accept language that confuses correlation with causation, overlooks confounding, or treats a post-treatment variable as a baseline covariate. It may recommend an adjustment that introduces bias or miss a design feature that makes a seemingly simple comparison appropriate.
Only a qualified researcher who understands the field, design, and assumptions can determine whether the claimed mechanism follows from the evidence. An AI-generated explanation can be a useful prompt, but it is not an identification analysis.
Statistical validity and reproducibility
An AI cannot certify that a p-value was calculated from the stated model, that multiple comparisons were handled correctly, that confidence intervals have the claimed coverage, or that a result is robust to reasonable analytical choices. It cannot establish that code runs, that randomization was implemented, or that an independent team can reproduce the result unless those checks are actually performed.
Models can produce plausible statistical language even when the input is incomplete or internally inconsistent. A confident answer to “Which test should I use?” is not proof that the test is valid for the data.
Image authenticity and manipulated figures
Visual inspection by an AI may surface unusual duplication, splicing, or contrast patterns, but it cannot by itself establish image authenticity or misconduct. Compression, legitimate processing, or instrument artifacts can resemble manipulation. A proper assessment requires original files, processing records, image-forensics expertise, and the journal’s procedures.

Citations, quotations, and source support
AI-generated references can be incorrect, hallucinated, or fabricated. A citation may have a real title but the wrong authors, year, journal, page, or digital identifier. A genuine article may not support the sentence attached to it, and a quotation may be paraphrased as if it were verbatim. An AI reviewer can flag an unusual reference or compare a supplied citation with accessible text, but it cannot be treated as a source of record.

Check that the cited passage supports the exact claim, that the quotation is accurate, and that permissions and attribution requirements are met.
Absence of plagiarism or copyright problems
Similarity scores are not a universal plagiarism finding. Legitimate technical phrases, methods descriptions, preprints, theses, translations, and an author’s earlier work can create overlap. Conversely, substantial appropriation can evade a particular database or be disguised by paraphrasing.
Copyright questions also depend on licenses, permissions, image rights, and the way material is reused. ICMJE assigns humans responsibility for attribution, permissions, and plagiarism prevention. An AI result should trigger a source-by-source review, not close the case.
Whether a manuscript was written by a person
AI-generated-text detectors infer patterns; they do not observe authorship. Their scores can vary with discipline, language background, editing, document length, and the detector itself. Springer Nature states that the accuracy and usefulness of such tools are far from definitive and that no tool can confirm whether AI use was safe and policy compliant.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A detector score therefore cannot prove that a named author used a model, that a policy was violated, or that a manuscript is free of AI assistance. A fair inquiry should examine the journal’s policy, the author’s disclosures, drafts, data, and ordinary authorship responsibilities rather than treating a percentage as a verdict.
The final editorial or peer-review decision
AI cannot replace a reviewer’s critical thinking or independent evaluation. It may help a reviewer organize comments or identify questions, but it cannot weigh novelty, importance, ethical acceptability, disciplinary context, or the balance of evidence with accountable judgment. A model also cannot take responsibility for a recommendation or respond appropriately when the evidence is ambiguous.
Why an AI review can sound right while being wrong
Large language models generate likely text, not verified findings. They may fill an information gap with a plausible reference, infer a method that was never reported, or smooth over a contradiction instead of preserving it. The more specialized the question, the more important it is to provide the exact source material and to test the output against primary evidence.
False positives create a second risk. A model may label a legitimate image as suspicious, call a valid citation irrelevant, or recommend rewriting a necessary technical term. If authors chase every alert without checking context, they can introduce errors while trying to remove them.

For that reason, a useful report should distinguish an observed text feature from an inference and an inference from a decision. “The abstract says 120 participants; the methods says 118” is an observation. “The sample is fabricated” is an unsupported conclusion unless independent evidence establishes it.
A human-controlled AI review workflow
- Define the task and the decision. State whether the goal is copy editing, a checklist scan, literature organization, a consistency check, or questions for a statistical review. Do not ask a language model to certify validity when the available evidence cannot support that task.
- Check permission and confidentiality first. Read the journal, funder, institution, and publisher policies. Confirm how the tool retains prompts and outputs, whether submitted text is used for training, who can access it, where data are processed, and whether deletion is available. Do not upload an unpublished manuscript when confidentiality cannot be assured or when the policy requires explicit author permission.
- Prepare a controlled input. Remove unnecessary personal, participant, clinical, proprietary, and identifying information. Supply the relevant rubric, reporting checklist, tables, or source passages when you are authorized to do so. Record the tool name and version, date, purpose, and the material supplied.
- Request findings, not verdicts. Ask the system to quote the passage, describe the possible issue, state its uncertainty, and identify what evidence a human should inspect. A prompt that asks “List possible inconsistencies and show the exact text” is safer than one that asks “Decide whether this study is valid.”
- Separate surface checks from substantive review. Resolve grammar, headings, units, and formatting in one pass. Handle methods, statistics, citations, images, ethics, and interpretation as separate investigations with appropriate expertise.
- Verify every consequential alert. Compare the manuscript with the protocol, raw or derived data, analysis code, original source article, image files, and applicable reporting standard. Record whether the alert was confirmed, disproved, or left unresolved and why.
- Rerun or inspect analyses independently. Do not accept a suggested statistical test or interpretation without checking assumptions, coding, missing-data treatment, multiplicity, sensitivity analyses, and the estimand that the study actually identifies.
- Apply policy and disclose substantive use. Follow the target journal’s current instructions. Where required, disclose the tool, version, purpose, and human oversight. Keep humans as the accountable authors, reviewers, and editors.
- Preserve an audit trail. Keep the prompts, outputs, revisions, verification notes, and final decisions in accordance with institutional and journal rules. This makes it possible to explain what the tool did and to correct an error later.
How to evaluate an AI-review workflow
Choosing a workflow matters more than choosing a confident-sounding product description. Assess these six dimensions before using a system on consequential material.
| Dimension | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Task scope | Is the tool being used for copy editing and organization, or is it being asked to judge scientific validity? Does its documented purpose match the task? |
| Evidence access | Can the reviewer provide the authoritative protocol, data definitions, original references, tables, and figures needed to check a claim? What evidence is the tool actually seeing? |
| Error handling | Does the output show the passage that triggered an alert, express uncertainty, and distinguish observation from inference? Can a human mark a false positive? |
| Confidentiality | What are the retention, training, deletion, access, location, and third-party-sharing terms? Are they acceptable for unpublished, personal, clinical, or proprietary material? |
| Transparency | Can you record the tool, version, date, prompt, input, output, and changes? Does the journal require that information to be disclosed? |
| Human control | Is a qualified person required to verify every consequential output and make the final decision, rather than accepting an automated score? |
What major publishing policies say
ICMJE
ICMJE places responsibility for accuracy, attribution, plagiarism prevention, confidentiality, and disclosure on human authors, editors, and reviewers. Its guidance emphasizes that AI can produce authoritative-sounding content that is incorrect, incomplete, or biased. It also says editors, reviewers, and publishers should not upload a submitted manuscript into an AI system where confidentiality cannot be assured without the authors’ explicit permission.
Elsevier
Elsevier permits supportive uses such as synthesis, organization, readability improvement, and checklist assistance when people verify the result and disclose use as required. Its journal policies warn that AI tools cannot replace a reviewer’s critical thinking or independent evaluation because they may generate incorrect, incomplete, or biased conclusions. Elsevier also warns that generated references can be incorrect or fabricated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSpringer Nature
Springer Nature uses a risk-based approach and warns that AI-detector accuracy and usefulness are far from definitive. No detector can confirm that AI use was safe or compliant with a particular policy. A detector output should therefore be treated as one uncertain signal, never as proof of misconduct or authorship.
Nature guidance
Nature distinguishes assistive uses from unsafe uses. Fabricating citations, generating core reasoning without disclosure, or delegating peer review to a large language model are not equivalent to correcting grammar or improving wording. The exact requirements vary by venue, so authors and reviewers should read the current instructions for the journal involved.
COPE
COPE states that AI tools cannot be listed as an author. Human authors remain responsible for the manuscript, including its accuracy, originality, attribution, and transparent disclosure of substantive assistance with writing, images, or data work.
Confidentiality: decide before uploading an unpublished manuscript
An unpublished paper can contain novel results, participant information, trade secrets, patent-sensitive details, or material under embargo. Public or non-retaining labels do not by themselves establish that a service is suitable. Read the actual terms and confirm that they match the journal and institutional rules.
- Check whether prompts and uploaded files are retained, logged, reviewed, or used to train models.
- Identify every provider and third party that can access the content, including hosted model and analytics services.
- Confirm the processing region, deletion process, backup retention, and incident-notification terms.
- Remove direct identifiers and unnecessary confidential details before any authorized use.
- Obtain explicit permission when a policy requires it, especially for a submitted manuscript under peer review.
- Keep a record of what was uploaded and what was returned.
If those answers are unavailable or unacceptable, use local, approved tools or perform the review without uploading the manuscript. A confidentiality failure cannot be repaired by editing the text after disclosure.
Best Value
Practical answers for authors, reviewers, and editors
Can AI review my manuscript?
Yes, for bounded assistance such as language editing, organization, explicit checklist checks, literature summaries, and a list of possible inconsistencies. No, if “review” means an independent certification of validity, originality, authorship, or publication readiness. The latter remains a human responsibility.
What can an AI manuscript checker actually catch?
It can catch or suggest visible issues: unclear wording, missing headings, inconsistent terminology, mismatched numbers, possible citation problems, and questions about an unstated control or analysis assumption. “Catch” means “surface for inspection,” not “prove.”
Can AI detect fake citations or plagiarism?
It can flag a citation or similarity pattern, but it cannot reliably establish that a reference is genuine and supportive or that text is plagiarized. Verify the source article, quotation, license, attribution, and context yourself.
Will a journal know that I used ChatGPT or another model?
A detector score cannot prove authorship or policy compliance. Whether use must be disclosed depends on the journal and the nature of the assistance. Keep an accurate record and follow the applicable instructions rather than relying on detector results.
Can AI replace peer review?
No. It lacks accountable independent evaluation of novelty, methods, ethics, context, and evidence. It may assist a human reviewer with organization or question generation, but it cannot make the final peer-review judgment.
Checklists for responsible use
Author checklist
- Define the narrow task before opening a tool.
- Read the target journal’s AI, disclosure, and confidentiality rules.
- Use AI for language, organization, and explicit checks rather than scientific certification.
- Verify every citation, quotation, numerical discrepancy, statistical suggestion, and image alert.
- Preserve the meaning of qualifiers, uncertainty intervals, and causal language during editing.
- Disclose substantive assistance when required and never list the tool as an author.
Reviewer checklist
- Obtain permission before using any external system on a submitted manuscript.
- Do not upload confidential text where retention and access cannot be assured.
- Use AI, if allowed, to organize notes or identify questions—not to outsource judgment.
- Check alerts against the manuscript, source papers, data descriptions, and methods.
- Write the final review in your own accountable assessment and disclose assistance as required.
Editor checklist
- Set a written policy for permitted tools, retention, disclosure, and reviewer use.
- Require human verification for citations, statistics, images, ethics, and misconduct allegations.
- Do not treat detector percentages as proof of AI authorship or a policy breach.
- Provide an appeal path when automated screening produces a serious allegation.
- Protect submitted manuscripts from systems that cannot assure confidentiality.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you about accuracy
There is no universal, independently validated accuracy figure for “AI manuscript review” as a whole. Systems differ by model, prompt, discipline, language, document type, source access, and the definition of a correct finding. Policy and standards documents describe useful applications and risks, but they do not establish one benchmark that can be applied to every tool.
A 2024 bibliometric analysis in the BMJ found that publisher guidance commonly identifies language improvement and literature synthesis as benefits while warning about inaccuracy, bias, plagiarism, and accountability. That pattern supports a cautious division of labor: automate low-stakes assistance where the text itself supplies the answer, and reserve claims about truth, validity, originality, confidentiality, and publication decisions for qualified humans with access to the necessary evidence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A defensible standard
An AI review is defensible when the task is explicit, the input is permitted, the output is presented as a fallible aid, every consequential finding is independently verified, and a named human accepts responsibility for the result. If any of those conditions is missing, downgrade the output to an unverified suggestion—or do not use it.
