AI coding tools can automate bounded execution, not software ownership. They can draft and edit code, search a repository, run permitted commands and tests, prepare a pull request, summarize changes and handle some routine workflows. They still need a human to define the goal, choose architecture, control permissions, verify behavior and decide whether anything ships.

What can AI coding tools automate?

The useful dividing line is not “AI versus human coding.” It is whether a task has a clear scope, available context and an objective way to check the result. A tool can often carry out the mechanical part of a well-defined task while a developer remains accountable for the decision and the outcome.

Work area What a tool may automate What still needs a developer
Code creation Boilerplate, functions, tests, configuration, refactors and edits across files Whether the change expresses the intended behavior and fits the design
Repository work Reading relevant files, locating references, making a multi-file patch and following existing conventions Which context is safe to expose and whether the inferred conventions are correct
Development tools Running permitted commands, linters, builds and tests, then iterating on reported failures Permission decisions, interpretation of failures and checks for gaps in test coverage
Contributions Creating a branch or pull request, describing changes and suggesting review fixes Reviewing the complete diff and deciding whether to merge
Repository routines Examples include issue triage and scheduled release-note preparation when the service and repository policy support them Policy, prioritization, sensitive-content review and the final publication decision
Communication Pull-request summaries and answers based on accessible repository context Confirming that the summary is complete and that its interpretation is accurate

Generating and editing code

Inline completion and chat assistants can write a function from a description, convert code between APIs, add a test case or explain an unfamiliar file. More agentic systems can change several files in one task, preserve imports and update related tests. This is most dependable when the request names the files, interfaces, constraints and acceptance checks.

Generated code remains a proposal. It can compile while implementing the wrong business rule, mishandling an edge case or using an insecure pattern. Treat the diff as if another developer submitted it: understand every meaningful line before accepting it.

Using repository context and development tools

An agent can inspect a repository, search for symbol references, read configuration and use tools available in its environment. Depending on configuration, it may run a command, observe the output and revise its patch. That power is also a boundary: command execution can delete data, alter dependencies, consume secrets or affect external systems. Grant the narrowest read and write access that lets the task succeed, and require approval for consequential commands.

Preparing pull requests and review suggestions

Cloud-based agents can produce a pull request from a selected repository and branch. Review features can flag possible defects and suggest a fix. A suggestion is an additional generated output, not an approval. GitHub’s documentation explicitly warns that “Logs do not replace your own review and testing.” Read the entire patch, not only the lines highlighted by an automated reviewer.

Automating repetitive repository routines

Some services support scheduled or event-driven jobs such as labeling and triaging issues or assembling weekly release notes. These are useful when the inputs are predictable and a person remains in the loop for ambiguous, private or high-impact cases. A routine that touches customer data, security reports or release claims should have an explicit review gate.

How an agentic coding task works

A reliable workflow keeps delegation narrow and verification explicit. Use this sequence for a feature, bug fix or maintenance change:

  1. Write the acceptance criteria. State the behavior, affected interfaces, out-of-scope work and the commands that must pass. Include examples for boundary cases rather than relying on a broad request such as “make this production ready.”
  2. Choose the smallest useful context. Identify the repository, files, issue, API contract and relevant tests. Do not provide unrelated secrets, credentials, customer exports or private documents.
  3. Set permissions before execution. Decide whether the agent may edit files, install dependencies, access the network, run shell commands or open a pull request. Use a disposable branch or workspace for unfamiliar work.
  4. Ask for a plan before a large patch. For a multi-file change, require a short plan naming files, assumptions and tests. Correct a mistaken assumption before code is written.
  5. Run checks in the same environment as the project. Use the repository’s documented build, test, lint, type-check and security-analysis commands. Record failures and distinguish an environment problem from a code defect.
  6. Review and integrate deliberately. Inspect the complete diff, compare it with the acceptance criteria, test important negative cases and check configuration and dependency changes. Merge or deploy only after a responsible human makes that decision.

What AI coding tools cannot reliably own

Understanding an underspecified goal

An agent can ask for clarification, but it cannot reliably discover an unstated product priority or legal obligation. “Add authentication” might mean password login, single sign-on, device binding, recovery, audit logging or all of them. A developer must resolve ambiguity, identify stakeholders and define what success means before delegation.

Architecture and long-term trade-offs

Tools can suggest a design that resembles code in the repository, yet miss operational constraints such as migration cost, latency budgets, failure recovery, data ownership or future team boundaries. Choosing service boundaries, schemas, consistency models and deprecation plans requires system-level judgment. Let an assistant compare options, but keep the architectural decision with the people responsible for maintenance.

Security, privacy and permissions

Plausible output may contain injection flaws, broken authorization, unsafe deserialization, weak cryptography, leaked secrets or excessive logging. An agent may also expose sensitive context to a service, choose an unsafe command or misunderstand a dynamic interface. Restrict context, inspect generated dependencies and run security checks appropriate to the application. Critical and sensitive systems need specialist review in addition to ordinary code review.

Verification that actually proves behavior

A passing test suite proves only what those tests exercise. Generated tests can repeat the implementation’s mistake, omit adversarial inputs or assert an unhelpful detail. Review coverage, mutation or property-based tests, integration behavior, observability and failure recovery where they matter. Automated review can hallucinate a defect or miss a real one; it should inform investigation, not replace it.

Integration and release decisions

A patch can be locally correct and still conflict with another branch, violate a deployment sequence, change an undocumented contract or break a customer workflow. Someone must understand the complete change, coordinate migrations and decide whether the release risk is acceptable. That accountability does not transfer merely because an agent opened the pull request.

Common failure modes and controls

Symptom Likely cause Control
The code compiles but the feature is wrong Ambiguous requirements or an inferred rule that was never specified Write examples and acceptance tests before asking for implementation
Only the happy path works Insufficient edge-case context or generated tests that mirror the code Add boundary, invalid-input, concurrency and recovery cases
Security review finds a severe issue late Secrets, trust boundaries or threat assumptions were absent from the prompt Provide a threat model, limit access and run security analysis before merge
The agent changes unrelated files Broad repository instructions or an overly large task Use a focused branch, list allowed paths and inspect the full diff
Commands damage the workspace or leak data Unrestricted shell or network permissions Sandbox execution, require approval and use disposable credentials
Reviewers trust an attractive summary Communication output mistaken for a technical review Read the diff and test results independently; treat summaries as orientation
Performance regresses Local tests omit production-scale data or latency conditions Run representative benchmarks and inspect query, memory and network behavior

Could coding with AI slow you down?

Yes. The result depends on task difficulty, repository familiarity, tool setup, developer experience and how much review and rework the change requires. Code volume, perceived speed, task completion and end-to-end delivery are different measures.

Evidence What was measured How to interpret it
DORA 2025 Nearly 5,000 technology professionals and more than 100 hours of qualitative data DORA describes AI as an amplifier of organizational strengths and dysfunctions; it is not a guaranteed delivery improvement
METR study, reported by TIME in 2025 16 experienced developers on complex projects; participants estimated 20% acceleration, while measured completion was about 20% slower The authors cautioned against broad generalization. The setting involved experienced developers and specific tasks
Raida and Hou, 2026 25,264 agentic pull requests from 2,361 popular GitHub repositories, covering May–July 2025 The median repository produced one to two agentic pull requests in three months; 78.9% had one developer both review and commit the agent contribution. Counts do not show PR size, quality or review effort

Measure your own workflow with comparable tasks and developers. Include prompting, environment setup, debugging, review, rework, integration and rollback—not only the time until the first code appears. A small pilot with the same quality bar is more informative than a universal speedup claim.

How to choose an AI coding tool for a real codebase

Named products are less important than the boundaries they enforce. Compare tools on these axes and confirm current limits in the vendor’s documentation:

Axis Questions to ask
Task scope Is it limited to inline completion and chat, or can it make multi-file changes, open pull requests and run scheduled routines?
Context and integrations Which repositories, IDEs, issue trackers and development tools can it access? Can you control which files are included?
Permission controls Can administrators restrict read/write scope, command execution, network access and secret exposure? Are approvals and audit logs available?
Verification workflow Can tests run in a reproducible environment? Are diffs, logs and failed checks easy for a human to inspect?
Operational constraints What are the session duration, branch and repository limits, eligibility rules, plan requirements and usage costs?
Codebase fit Does it handle the project’s languages, frameworks, generated files, conventions and repository structure?

Concrete limits in a documented cloud-agent workflow

GitHub’s documented cloud-agent workflow illustrates why product boundaries matter. The agent is scoped to a selected repository, works on one branch and one pull request per task, and has a maximum session time of 59 minutes. The repository must be hosted on GitHub and meet the applicable rules. Those limits favor focused assignments: split a migration or large feature into reviewable tasks rather than expecting one session to own the entire project.

Availability also depends on permissions, plan and repository policy. A capability shown in documentation is not a guarantee that every account, language or environment supports it. Check eligibility before designing a process around it.

A practical operating policy for teams

  • Define which repositories and data may be sent to an AI service.
  • Require human approval before shell commands with write, network, deployment or credential effects.
  • Keep generated changes in a branch and preserve an auditable diff.
  • Require tests and static analysis appropriate to the risk, with a named owner for reviewing failures.
  • Prohibit automatic merging or release for changes affecting authentication, payments, privacy, safety or infrastructure unless your risk process explicitly allows it.
  • Track rework, escaped defects, review time and rollback rate alongside time saved.
  • Train reviewers to inspect generated code for authorization, data validation, error handling, dependency changes and observability.

The bottom line for developers and engineering leaders

Delegate execution, not accountability. AI coding tools are well suited to bounded changes with clear inputs and checks: drafting code, updating several related files, running permitted tests, preparing a pull request and handling repetitive repository administration. They are not reliable owners of intent, architecture, security, verification or release decisions. DORA’s 2025 framing is apt: “AI’s primary role in software development is that of an amplifier.” Give a disciplined workflow a capable amplifier and it can increase throughput; give an ambiguous task unrestricted access and it can increase defects and review burden just as quickly.
