What AI Coding Agents Can and Cannot Reliably Do in an Existing Codebase

AI coding agents can make useful, multi-file changes in an existing repository, but they are not reliably autonomous software engineers. They can often locate relevant code, propose a patch and pass the tests that run. That is weaker than proving the full requirement, preserving every unrelated behavior, or producing a safe, maintainable change ready to merge. Reliability depends on the issue specification, repository context, tool setup, test quality and human review.

What “reliably” means for an AI coding agent

Claims about an agent “solving a coding task” collapse several different outcomes. Evaluate them separately:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Evidence level What it shows What it does not show
Plausible patch The agent produced code that appears related to the issue. That the behavior is correct, complete or safe.
Targeted tests pass The tests that ran accepted the change. That untested cases, integrations or production conditions work.
Requirement satisfied The implementation meets the stated and implied acceptance criteria. That it preserves every unrelated behavior or follows all local conventions.
Merge-ready change Reviewers have confirmed correctness, security, maintainability and operational fit. A universal level of safety across repositories or agent products.

Published evaluations directly measure patch production and selected test outcomes. They do not establish a universal rate for long-term maintainability or production safety. Treat “reliable” as a repository-specific judgment, not a single accuracy percentage.

Tasks agents can handle reasonably well

Bounded bug fixes with clear reproduction

An agent is most useful when the issue has a precise failure, a reproducible test and a limited change surface. It can search for the relevant function, trace callers, edit several files and add or update tests. A clear acceptance criterion gives the agent a way to stop instead of expanding the task.

Changes that follow existing patterns

Agents can copy established conventions for a new endpoint, validation rule, adapter or test when the repository already contains close examples. Consistency is easier to achieve when names, module boundaries and error handling are visible in nearby code.

Repository navigation and explanation

Code search, symbol resolution and dependency tracing can reduce the time needed to understand an unfamiliar project. Sourcegraph’s CodeScaleBench technical report evaluates these context tools on 370 tasks. Its comparison reported a paired reward delta of +0.0349 for MCP context tools versus its baseline in that report’s setup. That is evidence about the evaluated suites and configuration, not a guarantee that any context tool improves every repository.

Mechanical, low-ambiguity work

Renaming a symbol across known references, updating a configuration schema, generating repetitive test cases or applying a well-specified API change is usually safer than an architectural redesign. Even then, review is required because an agent may miss generated files, reflection, undocumented consumers or deployment-specific configuration.

Tasks agents do not reliably solve on their own

Ambiguous requirements

If an issue does not define edge cases, compatibility expectations or the intended user experience, the agent must guess. A patch can look polished while implementing a reasonable interpretation that is still wrong for the product.

Long-horizon, cross-cutting work

Large changes require planning across modules, migrations, documentation, operational controls and rollback paths. Agents may lose track of earlier assumptions, make locally consistent edits that conflict globally, or stop after the first passing test. They can contribute pieces of this work, but autonomous completion is not established.

Hidden behavior and weak observability

Tests cannot check behavior that is not represented in the test suite. Reflection, feature flags, data-dependent failures, performance limits, security policy and production integrations may be invisible to an agent running in a sandbox.

Design and risk decisions

Choosing a data model, deprecating a public interface, changing authorization semantics or accepting a migration risk requires product and operational judgment. An agent can present alternatives and implement a chosen design; it should not be the sole decision-maker.

How repository-level benchmarks measure agent work

SWE-bench models a real repository task: a language model receives a GitHub repository and an issue description, then generates a patch intended to resolve that issue. The project documents Docker-based evaluation to make environments reproducible.

OpenAI’s SWE-bench Verified report, updated February 24, 2025, describes a 500-sample subset screened by professional software developers for sufficiently specified issues and appropriate tests. Its evaluation checks tests that fail before the reference change and pass afterward, plus tests that pass both before and after to detect regressions in unrelated functionality.

This design is stronger than checking whether a patch compiles, but it remains bounded by the selected tests. Passing them does not prove that every requirement, integration or production condition is correct. A benchmark result therefore means “this configuration passed this benchmark’s checks,” not “the agent can safely modify any codebase.”

Why benchmark scores can mislead

Tests can be too strict

An overly specific assertion may reject a correct implementation that satisfies the issue in an equivalent way. OpenAI’s evaluation analysis identifies overly strict tests as a source of misleading outcomes.

Tests can be too weak

Low-coverage tests may allow an incomplete or fragile patch to pass. A green result can therefore be a false positive when important paths are absent.

Issues can be underspecified or misleading

If the prompt omits a necessary constraint, a model may be judged against an expectation it could not infer. Conversely, a misleading prompt can reward a change that follows the wording but not the repository’s actual behavior.

Environment setup can fail

Dependency, service or fixture problems can prevent a correct patch from running, creating a false negative unrelated to the code change. Reproducible containers reduce this risk but do not remove it.

OpenAI’s July 8, 2026 audit of SWE-Bench Pro data quality illustrates the scale of the problem. Its automated pipeline flagged 200 of 731 public-split tasks (27.4%) as potentially broken, while a human annotation campaign identified 249 (34.1%). Those figures describe task validity in that dataset, not agent failure rates.

What the long-horizon evidence shows

The SWE-Bench Pro paper from Scale AI researchers describes 1,865 problems across 41 repositories. The tasks are intended to resemble work that can take a professional engineer hours or days, with substantial changes spanning multiple files. Under the paper’s unified scaffold, the evaluated models recorded below 25% Pass@1.

That number is dated and specific to the paper’s tasks, models, scaffold and evaluation protocol. Pass@1 is the chance that the first generated attempt passes the benchmark; it is not a general success rate for all agents, repositories or issue types. The result does support a practical conclusion: reliability drops as scope, duration and integration complexity increase.

Context tools help, but they are not understanding

Large repositories overwhelm an agent’s limited working context. Search, symbol resolution and dependency tracing can expose the files and relationships most likely to matter. They can also make a failure easier to diagnose by showing which references were considered.

Context tooling does not guarantee that the agent selected the right subsystem or understood business rules encoded outside the call graph. Compare tools using the same representative tasks, repository snapshot, model, prompts and test process. Record whether the agent found the correct files, how many irrelevant files it touched, and whether its final diff remained reviewable.

A dependable workflow for using an agent in your repository

The following is conservative workflow guidance derived from the way repository benchmarks evaluate patches, regressions, environments and context. It is not a measured guarantee.

  1. Choose a representative, bounded issue. Start with a bug or small feature that has a clear expected result. Avoid beginning with a vague architectural rewrite.
  2. Write acceptance criteria before prompting. State inputs, outputs, error behavior, compatibility constraints and tests that must remain green. Include links or paths to the relevant package when known.
  3. Give the agent a reproducible environment. Provide the exact install, build and test commands, required services, fixture setup and any repository-specific instructions. Environment failures should be distinguishable from code failures.
  4. Ask for a plan before edits. Require the agent to list likely files, dependencies, assumptions and tests. Correct mistaken scope while the plan is still cheap to change.
  5. Keep the first change small. Prefer a focused commit or branch. Separate refactoring from behavior changes so reviewers can identify the cause of a failure.
  6. Run targeted checks, then the broader suite. Start with the reproducer and affected package. Run regression and integration checks that protect unrelated behavior before considering a merge.
  7. Inspect the complete diff. Look for accidental API changes, deleted validation, altered defaults, generated-file drift, secrets, license issues and edits outside the requested scope.
  8. Challenge the tests. Add cases for boundary values, error paths, permissions, concurrency and compatibility. Ask what behavior is still untested rather than treating a green suite as proof.
  9. Have a human owner approve the result. The reviewer should understand the requirement, the operational impact and the rollback plan. If the agent cannot explain a change, do not merge it.

Decision framework: when to delegate and when to stop

Task characteristic Reasonable agent role Human control needed
Clear bug, reproducible test, one subsystem Implement a proposed fix and tests. Verify edge cases and regression behavior.
Several files, established local pattern Plan and implement a staged change. Confirm dependency impact and diff boundaries.
Unclear product behavior Explore code and present questions or alternatives. Decide the requirement before implementation.
Database or public API migration Draft migration steps and compatibility code. Approve rollout, data safety and rollback.
Security-sensitive or irreversible operation Assist with analysis and test scaffolding. Own threat modeling, review and deployment.
Multi-day, cross-service redesign Handle narrowly defined sub-tasks. Maintain the architecture plan and integrate changes.

Common failure symptoms and responses

“All tests pass, but the issue remains”

Check whether the tests exercise the reported path, whether the fixture reproduces the original input and whether an integration boundary was skipped. Add a failing regression test from the real scenario before asking for another patch.

“The patch fixes one case and breaks another”

Compare the full before-and-after behavior, not only the new test. Run tests that previously passed, inspect changed interfaces and ask the agent to explain every altered branch. Revert unrelated refactoring.

“The agent keeps editing the wrong files”

Stop the run, provide the repository map and identify the authoritative implementation. Ask for a dependency trace and a file-limited plan. If generated code or indirection hides the source of truth, resolve that manually first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The environment fails before tests start”

Run the documented setup yourself, capture the exact error and separate dependency or service repair from the feature change. Do not count an unexecuted test suite as evidence that the patch works.

“The change grows without a stable result”

Split the issue into checkpoints with explicit acceptance tests. Commit a minimal fix first, then handle cleanup or optimization in a separate change.

How to compare agents or workflows fairly

The available evidence does not support a universal product ranking. If you are choosing an agent, evaluate competing workflows on identical repository snapshots and issue descriptions. Useful criteria are:

  • How well the agent handles ambiguity and asks for missing requirements.
  • Whether it locates the correct implementation, tests and configuration.
  • How it reacts to failing tests instead of masking them.
  • Size, clarity and reversibility of the resulting diff.
  • Coverage of regression, integration, security and performance checks.
  • Compatibility with the project’s language, build system and dependency setup.
  • Ability to follow repository-specific conventions and review feedback.
  • Validity of the benchmark or internal task set used for comparison.

Keep the same model settings, tool permissions, time budget and reviewer process when comparing results. Otherwise, an apparent advantage may come from the harness rather than the agent.

The practical limit

An AI coding agent is best treated as a fast, context-dependent contributor. It can search, explain, draft and revise code, and it can sometimes resolve a real issue across multiple files. Its output becomes dependable only when the task is well specified, the environment is reproducible, tests cover the required behavior and a knowledgeable person reviews the complete change.
