Deleting an AI-assistant chat is not the same as deleting every copy or personalization record associated with it. ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude separate conversations from some combination of saved memories, activity logs, uploaded files, connected services and model-improvement settings. To remove information thoroughly, identify where it was stored, use each relevant control, and allow for the provider’s published deletion window and exceptions.
“Memory” is several different things
AI services use memory and personalization features differently, so there is no universal memory database or single delete switch. A service may retain or reuse information in separate places:

- Saved memory or saved instructions: facts, preferences or instructions kept for future conversations.
- Chat history: the original conversation and its messages.
- History-based personalization: information inferred or referenced from earlier chats without appearing as a separately editable memory item.
- Activity records: account-level logs that can include chats, files, feedback, usage, location or media.
- Uploaded files and connected-app data: copies that may be stored outside the conversation itself.
- Model-improvement data: information governed by a separate training or service-improvement setting.
- Workspace records: data retained under an employer, school or other administrator’s policy.
That separation explains why deleting a chat can leave a saved preference, why turning off personalization does not necessarily erase history, and why an activity deletion may not remove records held in another provider service.

What ChatGPT can remember
OpenAI’s current ChatGPT guidance describes saved memories as details you ask ChatGPT to remember or that it saves as useful context when the feature is available. Saved memories are stored separately from chat history. Chat-history reference is another personalization source: the assistant can use information from previous conversations, and that information can change as the service updates what it considers relevant.

Deleting a ChatGPT conversation
Deleting the conversation removes it from your history and schedules it for permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days, unless it has already been de-identified and disassociated from you or OpenAI must retain it longer for security or legal reasons. This is a scheduled backend process, not a promise that every copy disappears immediately.
A deleted conversation can still have produced a separate saved memory. OpenAI states: “Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from that chat.” Remove the memory through the memory controls as well as deleting the source chat.
Turning off chat-history reference
When you turn off Reference chat history, OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion from its systems within 30 days. The original chats remain unless you delete them separately. Turning off chat-history reference also does not delete saved memories; those have their own control.
Files and connected applications
ChatGPT’s Library can keep an uploaded file separately from the conversation in which you used it. Deleting that conversation does not delete a saved Library copy. If information came from a connected application, inspect that integration and remove the underlying record there when necessary. The chat, memory item, Library file and connected-service record should be treated as distinct sources.
Memory deletion logs
OpenAI says it may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That retention period applies to the deletion record or related logs, not as a guarantee that the deleted memory remains available to answer future prompts.

What Gemini stores and reuses
Google’s Gemini Apps guidance covers both personalization and a broader activity system. Depending on eligibility and settings, Gemini can remember facts, interests and preferences across conversations. Saved instructions, called “Saved info” in some regions, remain until you delete them. Gemini can also reference earlier chats in activity to personalize a response.
Gemini Apps Activity
Gemini Apps Activity can include chats and shared files, videos, screens and photos. In relevant settings, it can also include audio, Gemini Live media, feedback, information from websites visited with Gemini, product-usage data and location information. When Keep Activity is enabled, Google says this activity may be used to provide, develop and improve services, including generative-AI training, and may support human review, subject to settings and region.

Auto-delete choices
Google documents an 18-month default auto-delete period for Gemini Apps Activity, with options for 3 months, 36 months or indefinite retention. You can also delete chats or activity manually. These choices govern the activity covered by Gemini Apps settings; they do not automatically erase records saved in other Google services.
Keep Activity off
If Keep Activity is off, Google says future chats will not appear in your Activity and will not be used to train its AI models unless you choose to send feedback. Gemini still saves those chats for 72 hours so it can respond, process feedback and protect Google and its users. Turning the setting off therefore changes future handling; it is not retroactive deletion of earlier activity.
Human-reviewed data
Google says chats reviewed by human reviewers, along with related data, are not deleted when you delete activity. Reviewed data can be retained for up to three years, and deleting account activity does not remove those disconnected records. This is one reason a user-facing activity deletion should not be described as absolute erasure.

What Claude’s published guidance establishes
Anthropic’s consumer deletion guidance is narrower in scope than the ChatGPT and Gemini memory documentation. It establishes how conversation deletion works, but it does not, by itself, describe every possible Claude personalization or persistent-memory mechanism.

Anthropic states: “You have control to delete your conversations, which will be immediately deleted from your conversation history and automatically deleted from our back-end within 30 days.” Its guidance also says backend data may be retained for periods set in the Privacy Policy when needed to enforce usage policies, address terms or policy violations, or comply with law.
Do not infer from the 30-day conversation rule that every derived record, backup or connected-service copy follows exactly the same schedule. The published statement is specifically about deleted consumer conversations and its stated exceptions.

How to remove information methodically
Use this sequence whenever a conversation contains personal, confidential or identifying information.
- Identify the source. Decide whether the information is in a saved memory or instruction, a chat, an activity log, an uploaded file, a connected app or a managed workspace.
- Remove the persistent personalization. Open the provider’s Memory, Saved info or Saved instructions controls and delete the relevant item. If the service offers a list of remembered facts, check each item rather than assuming one deletion covers all related entries.
- Delete the source conversation. Remove the chat that supplied the information. A memory control and a chat-history control are separate on services that document them separately.
- Inspect files. Check a Library, file manager or attachment area for copies saved independently of the conversation. Delete those files where the interface provides a separate action.
- Check connected services. If the assistant accessed a drive, mail account, calendar, browser activity or another application, review that service’s own records and permissions.
- Review activity and feedback. For Gemini, inspect Gemini Apps Activity and feedback. For ChatGPT, distinguish model-improvement settings from deletion. A training opt-out does not remove stored chats.
- Allow the stated window. Keep the provider’s documented timeframe and exceptions in mind. A missing item in the user interface means it is no longer shown there; it does not prove that every backend copy has already been removed.
Retention windows are service-specific

These periods cannot be added together or treated as promises of complete erasure. They cover different data categories and can be altered by legal, security, policy-enforcement or account-management requirements.

A privacy setting can control one use without deleting the underlying record. For example, turning off ChatGPT’s “Improve the model for everyone” setting means new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models, while saved chats can remain in history. Conversely, deleting a chat does not automatically change a model-improvement preference.
Temporary Chat is a separate mode with separate behavior: it does not appear in history, does not create or update memories and is not used to improve models, but it may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Gemini’s Keep Activity switch similarly changes how future chats appear and are used, while allowing a 72-hour operational copy.
Do not assume that deleting information prevents every possible downstream effect. The published guidance supports specific controls and windows, but it does not provide a complete inventory of every backup, derived representation or internal processing path. The defensible conclusion is narrower: use the documented controls, follow each service’s exceptions and avoid treating a user-interface deletion as proof that all traces vanished at one exact moment.
Personal accounts and managed workspaces differ
Enterprise, school and other managed workspaces can impose organization-level retention, memory, compliance and access settings. An administrator may control whether memory is available, how long records are kept, who can export them and which connected services are permitted. The consumer instructions above may therefore be incomplete or unavailable on a managed account.
Before entering sensitive information into a work or school assistant, check the workspace administrator’s policy and the account’s current controls. If the information belongs to an organization, deleting it from your personal view may not satisfy the organization’s retention or legal obligations.
Common situations and the correct response
“I deleted the chat, but the assistant still mentions the fact.”
Check saved memories, saved instructions and history-based personalization. Delete the relevant memory item, remove the source chat and allow the documented propagation period. Also inspect a connected app or uploaded file if the fact came from one.
“I turned off memory. Are my old chats gone?”
No. A memory or personalization switch changes future reuse; it is not necessarily a history-deletion command. Delete old chats and files through their own controls.
“I opted out of training. Why is the conversation still visible?”
Training controls and storage controls serve different purposes. A model-improvement opt-out can leave chats in history until you delete them.
“I deleted Gemini Activity. Why does Google still have related data?”
Review whether the record was a saved instruction, a file or data in another Google service. If human reviewers examined it, Google says that reviewed data can remain for up to three years and is not removed by deleting account activity.
“Can I promise that a deleted prompt is gone everywhere?”
No provider guidance in this comparison supports that blanket promise. You can document which controls you used, the provider’s stated deletion schedule and any stated exceptions, but backend copies, legal holds, safety logs and disconnected reviewed data may follow different rules.

- Use a temporary or history-limited mode before sharing information that should not become part of personalization.
- Do not upload a sensitive file unless you know where the service stores attachments separately from chats.
- Review saved memories or instructions periodically and delete stale entries.
- Separate “do not train on new chats” from “delete my existing data” when choosing settings.
- When leaving a workspace, ask what the administrator retains and whether personal deletion controls apply.
- Record the date you deleted information and the provider’s stated window if you need an auditable privacy trail.
