What AI Agents Can and Cannot Do in Reliability Engineering

AI agents can watch operational signals, investigate incidents, propose explanations and execute tightly bounded changes. They cannot, by themselves, prove that their decisions are reliable, safe across changing conditions or suitable for unrestricted production access. A dependable deployment combines staged authority, least-privilege credentials, deterministic safeguards, human intervention, realistic testing and continuous monitoring.

What an AI agent does in reliability engineering

An AI agent is a software system that can interpret information, call tools and pursue an operational goal through one or more steps. In reliability engineering, its tools might read metrics, logs, traces, deployment records, tickets and runbooks; query an incident system; or submit a change through an approved interface. The important distinction from a text-only assistant is that an agent can affect the environment, not merely describe it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That capability makes authority the central design question. An agent that only summarizes an alert has a different risk profile from one that restarts a service, changes traffic routing or rolls back a release. Google SRE describes adoption as a progression through monitoring, investigation, approval, actuation and self-direction. Those levels are an operating model, not evidence that any particular agent is safe at a given level.

What AI agents can do today

Monitor large volumes of operational data

An agent can continuously examine metrics, logs, traces, events and configuration changes, then correlate signals that are difficult to review manually during an incident. It can group related alerts, identify when several symptoms began, attach recent deployments to a spike in errors and keep a timeline updated as new data arrives.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is most useful when the agent has well-defined data sources and an observable output. The system should show which signals it used, the time range examined and any missing or stale feeds. A fluent summary without that evidence is not an adequate incident record.

Investigate and generate incident hypotheses

Agents can perform first-pass investigation: compare current behavior with a known-good baseline, search runbooks, inspect recent changes and propose hypotheses for an engineer to test. For example, an agent might report that elevated latency began two minutes after a configuration rollout, that only one region is affected and that database saturation is a stronger explanation than a network event based on the available telemetry.

These are hypotheses, not findings. Engineers still need to verify causality, check for contradictory evidence and decide whether the proposed test is safe. Google’s guidance treats this assisted mode as a practical starting point because monitoring and investigation can be automated before production actuation is authorized.

Prepare approvals and incident artifacts

An agent can turn investigation results into a change plan, rollback steps, an incident update or a post-incident draft. It can ask for a specific approval—such as permission to shift a defined percentage of traffic—rather than presenting an unbounded request. It can also record the request, approver, tool call, result and timestamp for later review.

Execute bounded mitigations

With explicit approval and narrowly scoped credentials, an agent can carry out a reversible action such as restarting a failed worker, scaling within a fixed range, disabling a problematic feature flag or rolling back to a known version. A partial-autonomy design lets the agent prepare and execute the change only after a human approves the exact action and limits.

Higher autonomy is appropriate only for situations that are specific, repeatable and well understood. Google’s highest level includes planning a sequence, observing effects, adapting and rolling back. That description illustrates a possible maturity target; it does not establish that unrestricted self-direction is safe for a particular service.

Coordinate routine operational work

Agents can open or update tickets, notify an on-call rotation, collect diagnostic bundles, check whether a runbook prerequisite is met and close routine follow-up tasks. These actions are lower risk when they do not alter production state, but they still require identity isolation and audit logs because incorrect routing or misleading status can delay a response.

Autonomy levels and the human role

The following interpretation turns the Google SRE progression into concrete operating modes. Teams should define their own boundaries for each service rather than treating the labels as a certification.

Operating mode Agent activity Human responsibility Typical risk boundary
Monitoring Collects signals, detects anomalies and summarizes alerts. Decides whether an alert represents a real reliability issue. No production mutation; data quality and alert fatigue are the main concerns.
Assisted investigation Queries telemetry, searches runbooks and proposes incident hypotheses. Validates evidence and chooses the next diagnostic step. Read-only access where possible; an incorrect hypothesis can waste time.
Approval-gated actuation Builds and executes a specified change after explicit approval. Approves scope, timing, safeguards and rollback. Only listed tools, resources and parameter ranges may be used.
Defined-scenario autonomy Acts independently in preapproved, well-defined cases. Handles novel conditions, reviews outcomes and can interrupt. Actions must be reversible, rate-limited and covered by tested runbooks.
Self-directed operation Plans multiple actions, monitors effects, adapts and rolls back. Sets policy, supervises the system and responds to exceptions. Highest blast-radius risk; requires strong evidence, containment and recovery.

What an agent cannot establish on its own

Task success is not reliability

An agent can complete a benchmark task or fix one incident and still behave inconsistently on the next attempt. A 2026 study of agent reliability reports that improvements in task accuracy do not necessarily produce proportional gains in reliability. Its results apply to the evaluated benchmarks and systems, not to every model or production environment.

Reliability must be examined across several dimensions:

  • Consistency: Does the agent produce comparable results when the same case is repeated?
  • Robustness: Does it continue to behave acceptably when prompts, tool responses, data quality or environmental conditions change?
  • Predictability: Do confidence or other internal signals indicate when the agent is likely to succeed or fail?
  • Safety: Are errors prevented from causing unacceptable confidentiality, integrity or availability harm?

It cannot guarantee correct diagnosis

Operational telemetry is incomplete, delayed and sometimes contradictory. An agent may mistake correlation for causation, trust a stale dashboard, overlook an interaction between services or select a familiar explanation for an unfamiliar failure. Human review is especially important when symptoms span teams, regions or dependencies not represented in the agent’s tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It cannot make production risk disappear

Google SRE warns that an incorrect production action can disrupt service immediately and that automation can increase a failure’s blast radius by acting faster or repeating a bad decision. NIST identifies confidentiality, integrity and availability risks in AI systems and treats security and resilience as active areas of work. Therefore, a claim that an agent can safely remediate incidents is always deployment-specific and conditional on controls.

It cannot replace recovery engineering

An agent may fail to detect its own error, lose access to a tool, receive an authentication failure or continue operating with incomplete information. NIST’s reliability guidance defines reliability as correct operation over time under expected conditions across the system’s lifetime. That definition implies validation, intervention and recovery processes, not a one-time demonstration.

How to evaluate an agent before production authority

Build an evaluation that resembles the work the agent will perform. Document the expected-use assumptions, available tools, data freshness, service-level objectives and actions the agent is allowed to take. A high score on a generic benchmark is not a substitute for representative operational cases.

1. Create a representative case set

Include ordinary alerts, noisy multi-signal incidents, partial outages, recent-deployment regressions, dependency failures and cases where the correct action is to wait or escalate. Include negative cases in which the agent must refuse an unsafe request. Record the expected diagnosis, acceptable actions, prohibited actions and evidence an operator should see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Measure repeated consistency

Run each case multiple times under the same conditions. Compare chosen tools, hypotheses, proposed actions, final outcomes and escalation decisions. Investigate both different answers and different action sequences, even when the final result happens to be acceptable.

3. Perturb prompts, tools and environment

Change wording, reorder available evidence, introduce delayed telemetry, return an API error, expire a credential or make a tool response malformed. Test regional differences, missing dependencies and resource pressure. The goal is to learn whether behavior remains within policy when conditions are not ideal.

4. Test confidence and escalation

Check whether the agent’s confidence signals distinguish strong evidence from speculation. Give it ambiguous and novel incidents and verify that it requests human help rather than improvising an unapproved change. A system that knows when to stop is safer than one that always produces an answer.

5. Score consequences, not just completion

Measure policy violations, unauthorized tool calls, data exposure, downtime, rollback quality, time to useful diagnosis and the severity of the worst failure. A fast but destructive action should score worse than a slower escalation. Include API, authentication and tool-call failures in the test record.

6. Package evidence for approval

A production-readiness review should contain the case set, assumptions, measured failure modes, permission map, audit records, incident procedures, recovery plan and monitoring design. Re-run the evaluation when the model, prompt, tools, data, policies or operating conditions change. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework calls for ongoing monitoring and change management rather than treating deployment as a final event.

Controls that limit production damage

Progressive authorization

Start in read-only monitoring or investigation mode. Add approval-gated actions only after the agent demonstrates acceptable behavior on representative cases. Expand authority one scenario at a time, with a documented reason and rollback path.

Least privilege and a distinct identity

Give the agent its own service identity and only the permissions needed for the current task. Do not let it inherit a developer’s broad credentials. Separate read, propose and execute permissions, and constrain resources, regions, namespaces and parameter ranges.

Deterministic action controls

Use dry-run support, allowlists, rate limits, circuit breakers and timeouts around every mutating tool. Require an explicit change preview before execution. Make actions interruptible so an operator can stop a loop without waiting for the model to finish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Observability and auditability

Record prompts or task inputs, retrieved evidence, model and policy versions, tool calls, parameters, approvals, results and rollbacks. Keep enough context to reconstruct why an action occurred, while applying data-retention and access controls to sensitive logs.

Monitoring, override and recovery

Monitor both service health and agent behavior: error rates, rejected actions, unusual call volume, confidence-calibration drift, latency and escalation frequency. Maintain a tested kill switch, manual runbooks, incident ownership and a recovery procedure that works if the agent, its APIs or its credentials are unavailable.

Security for single- and multi-agent designs

Threat-model prompt injection, poisoned operational data, unauthorized tool use, secret leakage and collusion between agents. NIST has described proposed security-control overlays for both single-agent and multi-agent systems; that work signals an evolving area rather than a complete, settled standard.

A safe incident-response workflow

  1. Detect: The agent identifies an anomaly and records the signals, timestamps and data-quality limits.
  2. Investigate: It gathers approved telemetry and produces ranked hypotheses with supporting and conflicting evidence.
  3. Classify: It checks whether the incident matches a preapproved scenario. If not, it stops at escalation.
  4. Propose: It presents one bounded action, expected effect, risks, duration and tested rollback steps.
  5. Approve: An authorized human confirms the exact scope, or the policy engine rejects the request.
  6. Execute: The agent performs the action through an allowlisted tool under rate and time limits.
  7. Verify: It observes defined health indicators and reports whether the expected effect occurred.
  8. Rollback or escalate: If indicators worsen, the circuit breaker or operator interrupts and the tested recovery path runs.
  9. Review: Preserve the evidence, assess policy compliance and update the case set or runbook before granting more authority.

Common failure modes and responses

Symptom Likely issue Response
Confident but unsupported diagnosis Incomplete telemetry or poor confidence calibration. Require cited evidence, add contradictory cases and force escalation below an evidence threshold.
Repeated or escalating changes Missing rate limits, idempotency or circuit breaking. Use action budgets, deduplicate requests and add an operator kill switch.
Unauthorized tool call Overbroad identity or policy bypass. Separate credentials, enforce an allowlist outside the model and treat the event as a security incident.
Failure after an API or credential error No defined degraded mode. Fail closed, notify the on-call engineer and provide a manual procedure.
Works in tests but fails after a change Model, prompt, tool, data or environment drift. Trigger change review, rerun representative tests and compare behavior with the previous version.

How to compare agent deployments

When evaluating two approaches, compare evidence rather than marketing claims. Ask:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which tasks are automated: monitoring, investigation, approval, actuation or self-direction?
  • What resources can the agent change, and are those changes reversible?
  • When is human approval mandatory, and who handles novel cases?
  • Which reliability dimensions were measured, over how many repeated and perturbed trials?
  • Can an operator reconstruct every decision and tool call?
  • What prevents runaway behavior, and how quickly can the system be interrupted?
  • What happens when telemetry, APIs, authentication or the agent itself fails?

This framework keeps a read-only diagnostic assistant from being compared as though it had the same risk as an autonomous remediation system.

Governance over the agent’s lifetime

Reliability work does not end at launch. Assign an owner for the agent, its policies and its credentials. Review access regularly, rotate secrets, inspect audit samples and set thresholds that automatically pause actuation when behavior drifts. Include the agent in incident exercises and disaster-recovery tests.

Reassess after model updates, prompt edits, new tools, topology changes, policy changes or major shifts in traffic and workload. Keep a versioned record of what was approved and under which assumptions. If those assumptions no longer hold, reduce authority until the evaluation and recovery plan catch up.

Site Reliability Engineering, 2nd Edition is a useful foundation for SRE practices and for understanding how automation affects reliability, but it is not proof that a particular AI agent is dependable and does not replace agent-specific testing.
