PC prices rise when key components become more expensive or harder to obtain, then manufacturers decide how much of that increase to pass on. In 2026, memory and storage supply are major pressure points, but CPU costs, factory capacity, shipping, currencies, taxes, promotions and configuration changes also determine what you pay. A component-price forecast therefore cannot be read as a guaranteed increase for every finished computer.
How a component shortage becomes a higher PC price
A computer’s price starts with its bill of materials: the processor, memory, storage, display, motherboard, power system, cooling, chassis and other parts. The manufacturer adds assembly, software, support, warranty, distribution and its target margin. Retailers then add their own margin and account for inventory, delivery, taxes and local competition.

When a component supplier raises its contract price, a PC maker has several choices:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Pass some or all of the increase to buyers.
- Absorb it temporarily through a lower margin.
- Reduce discounts and promotional offers.
- Change the configuration, such as fitting less RAM or a smaller SSD.
- Change the product mix toward models with better margins.
Retail prices reflect that decision chain rather than a single wholesale number. A manufacturer with older, cheaper inventory may hold a price steady for a while, while another buying parts at current rates may increase prices immediately. Contracts, currency movements, taxes, tariffs, delivery costs and competitive pressure create further differences between countries and retailers.

Why memory and storage matter most in the 2026 market
Memory and storage are unusually important current pressure points. TrendForce’s 30 September 2026 analysis says suppliers are prioritizing advanced-process capacity for server products and that the overall memory market remains undersupplied. It projects conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in the fourth quarter of 2026, and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% over the same period.
Those figures describe contracts between suppliers and manufacturers. They do not mean every laptop or desktop will become 10–20% more expensive. The retail result depends on how much DRAM and NAND a particular system uses, when the manufacturer bought it, and whether the maker raises prices, trims its margin, cuts a promotion or changes capacity.
How AI and servers affect PC components
Server and AI infrastructure demand can compete for manufacturing capacity that might otherwise serve client PCs. TrendForce describes suppliers allocating more advanced capacity to server products and tracking demand across memory segments. The defensible conclusion is specific: capacity allocation can tighten the supply available for PC-oriented DRAM and NAND. It is not accurate to claim that every PC component is being directly bought up by AI companies.

| Publisher and date | Measure | What it indicates | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| TrendForce, September 2026 | Conventional DRAM contract prices up 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 | Memory input costs may rise sharply for manufacturers renewing contracts. | A contract-market forecast, not a universal retail-PC increase. |
| TrendForce, September 2026 | NAND Flash contract prices up 15–20% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 | SSD and other flash-based storage face additional input pressure. | Retail pass-through varies by inventory, capacity and vendor decisions. |
| TrendForce, 2026 | CPU, DRAM and SSD represented approximately 68% of the bill of materials for a US$900 mainstream notebook in 3Q26. | Changes in a few major parts can materially affect a mainstream laptop’s cost. | This is one notebook price tier and period, not every PC. |
| Gartner, 2026 | Combined DRAM and SSD prices forecast 130% higher by the end of 2026 than in 2025; PC prices forecast 17% higher over that comparison. | A scenario in which memory and storage inflation lifts average PC pricing. | A Gartner forecast with its own assumptions, not an observed global average. |
| Omdia, 2026 | Worldwide PC shipments forecast to fall 12% to 245 million units. | Higher costs may weaken unit demand. | Shipments are not retail-price measurements. |
| IDC, 2026 | Worldwide PC units forecast to fall 11.3% while revenue grows 1.6%. | Higher average selling prices can make market revenue rise even as fewer PCs ship. | A separate forecast using different assumptions from Gartner and Omdia. |
These forecasts should not be averaged into one “consensus” increase. They cover different measures, time frames and assumptions. A contract-price forecast, a market-wide average selling price and a shipment forecast answer different questions.

Why a similar-looking PC can cost more than last year
Configuration changes can hide inflation
A vendor can preserve a familiar sticker price by reducing the included specification. A system advertised as the same model family might ship with less RAM, a smaller SSD, a different memory generation or a less capable processor. IDC describes possible reductions in RAM and SSD configurations, while Omdia reports that vendors may reduce promotions, raise prices and adjust configurations as component costs increase.
Compare the complete specification, not just the model name. Check RAM capacity and generation, SSD capacity and interface, processor model, graphics hardware, display resolution and refresh rate, operating system, warranty and included accessories.
Promotions are part of the effective price
A temporary discount can disappear even when the regular list price does not change. Conversely, a retailer may discount an older configuration to clear inventory while a newer revision costs more. Compare current street prices with other current street prices, and label launch prices or historical prices as such. Do not treat a discounted price as a permanent market level.
Other forces that push PC prices up
CPU and platform costs
Processors are a significant part of many systems, especially compact laptops and performance desktops. A new CPU generation can bring higher design, validation and platform costs, while a supply constraint or manufacturing transition can raise the processor’s input cost. The effect is not uniform: a premium system may use an expensive chip whose cost dominates the configuration, whereas an entry desktop may be more sensitive to memory, storage and chassis costs.

Factory capacity and technology transitions
HP’s 2026 explainer describes manufacturing capacity as slow to adjust, with new production facilities potentially taking 18 to 24 months to come online. Building or retooling plants requires large capital investment, and a transition to a new process can temporarily limit output or raise per-unit costs. This is a structural mechanism, not proof that every factory cost increased by a specific amount in 2026.
Boards, power components and raw materials
TrendForce’s October 2026 notebook outlook identifies printed circuit boards (PCBs), multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) and power-management integrated circuits (PMICs) as additional components exposed to allocation, raw-material or geopolitical pressure. They are usually smaller cost items than the main processor, memory or SSD, but a shortage can still delay production or raise the cost of a particular design.
Logistics and production location
When a manufacturer shifts production between countries or factories, it may incur qualification, supply-chain-management, freight and inventory costs. HP also points to transportation and logistics as general cost mechanisms. Delivery distance, fuel costs, customs duties, tariffs and local taxes can make an identical configuration cost different amounts in different regions.

Currency and commercial strategy
A PC assembled or priced in one currency can become more expensive when the buyer’s currency weakens. Vendors also set prices according to competition, channel fees, warranty obligations and expected demand. A manufacturer may accept a lower margin to defend market share, while another may protect its margin by raising the price or narrowing its discount.

Why budget PCs can feel the squeeze first
Lower-priced systems generally leave less margin to absorb a component increase. Buyers in this segment are also highly price-sensitive, so vendors have to balance a small price rise against the risk of losing demand. Omdia notes that the possible outcomes include higher prices, fewer promotions, changed specifications or a narrower selection of models; none is inevitable for every brand.
Premium systems have more margin room and buyers may value performance, display quality, graphics capability or portability enough to accept a higher price. That does not make premium PCs immune: high-end models often contain more memory, faster storage and more expensive processors, so a rise in those inputs can produce a larger absolute dollar increase.
Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal said, “The sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028.” This is Gartner’s forecast, published 26 February 2026, not a statement that every sub-$500 computer has already vanished or that all regions will follow the same timetable.

| Comparison | Typical price sensitivity | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mainstream notebook | Often sensitive to CPU, DRAM and SSD together; TrendForce estimated those three at approximately 68% of the bill of materials for a US$900 model in 3Q26. | RAM and SSD capacity, soldered versus upgradeable memory, display and battery components. |
| Entry desktop | Can be strongly affected by memory and SSD costs because the total margin is tight. | Whether the quoted price includes an operating system, Wi-Fi, keyboard, monitor and a full-size SSD. |
| Performance desktop | Processor, graphics card, cooling, power supply and memory can each dominate at different times. | Exact CPU and GPU models, power-supply rating, RAM generation and storage configuration. |
| Premium notebook | Higher baseline margins can cushion some increases, but larger memory, storage and display specifications raise exposure. | Screen technology, storage speed, memory capacity, warranty and upgrade limits. |
This table describes cost exposure, not a guaranteed direction for any individual model. A desktop with an existing stockpile of parts may be cheaper than a laptop bought after a supplier contract reset, even during the same month.

How to compare PC prices fairly
- Match the form factor. Compare notebook with notebook or desktop with desktop; include the cost of a monitor and peripherals when comparing a complete desktop setup.
- Match the core configuration. Record the exact CPU, graphics solution, RAM capacity and generation, SSD capacity and interface, and display specification.
- Separate price types. Mark whether each figure is a current street price, launch price, clearance price, contract estimate or forecast.
- Include the bundle. Check the operating system, warranty length, charger, keyboard, mouse, delivery, taxes and any required accessories.
- Account for location. Note country, currency, tax treatment, tariffs and delivery costs before drawing a conclusion.
- Check the promotion terms. A coupon, limited-time rebate or retailer subsidy may not represent the normal price.
What rising component prices mean for a buyer
If you need a PC now, compare complete, like-for-like configurations rather than waiting for a headline forecast to become a specific retail increase. A model with adequate RAM and storage at a transparent price may offer better value than a cheaper system that quietly cuts those specifications. If you can wait, monitor the exact configuration and its promotion history; a broad market forecast cannot identify the best purchase date for your region.
Upgrading an existing compatible system can sometimes avoid buying a whole new PC, but it is not a cure for higher complete-system prices. Before buying a DDR5 desktop RAM kit, verify the motherboard’s supported memory type, capacity limit, module format and speed. Laptop memory may be soldered or use a different module format, so desktop RAM is not automatically compatible.
When will PC prices fall?
No single date is established for a return to lower prices. Factory capacity can take many months to expand, supplier contracts reset at different times, and demand, currency and promotions change by market. The 2026 forecasts are volatile and geographically uneven. A fall in DRAM or NAND contract prices would improve manufacturers’ input costs, but retailers may still be selling older inventory, and vendors may choose to rebuild margins rather than immediately cut prices.
The practical signal to watch is the combination of component availability, system specifications and actual street prices in your market. Treat forecasts as scenarios that explain pressure, not promises about the price of a particular computer.
