It is not product approval, a customer contract, or a guarantee of new work. The practical path is to select the correct 9100-family standard, align your quality system, create access to the IAQG OASIS database, and contract with a certification body that participates in the IAQG Certification Scheme.
What AS9100 certification actually covers
AS9100 is the aerospace, space, and defense quality-management standard in the IAQG 9100 family. It uses ISO 9001 as its foundation and adds requirements intended for the risks and controls found in aerospace supply chains. IAQG identifies additions such as operational risk management, product safety, and review or testing of raw materials and other data.

Certification applies to the management system and the organization’s defined scope. An auditor evaluates whether the system is planned, implemented, monitored, and improved in accordance with the applicable standard. The certificate does not certify every individual part, process, employee, or customer deliverable. Product acceptance, qualification, source approval, configuration requirements, and contractual oversight can still be imposed by a customer, regulator, or prime contractor.
IAQG describes the value of its scheme this way: “The IAQG Certification Scheme enables all organizations that purchase goods and services to recognize and accept the audits and certifications issued by accredited Certification Bodies (CBs) as part of their supply chain management processes.” IAQG also says the scheme can reduce redundant customer audits, but that statement does not mean a particular customer will waive its own audit or surveillance rights.

Choose the right standard in the 9100 family
Not every organization should pursue the same certificate. IAQG describes three related standards, each aimed at a different type of activity.
| Standard | Organization it is intended for | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| 9100 | Aviation, space, and defense organizations, including suppliers across supply-chain levels | Do we design, manufacture, process, or otherwise provide aerospace, space, or defense products or services? |
| 9110 | Aviation maintenance organizations | Is maintenance, repair, or overhaul the organization’s primary controlled activity? |
| 9120 | Aviation, space, and defense distributors | Do we distribute products rather than perform the manufacturing or maintenance activity covered by another standard? |
IAQG says 9100 is primarily designed for aerospace, space, and defense but can also be used in another sector that needs controls beyond ISO 9001. A supplier should define its actual activities and intended certification scope before buying a standard or requesting quotations. A mixed business may need to discuss how its product, maintenance, distribution, or support activities are represented in the scope with a prospective certification body.
Why aerospace customers use the 9100 scheme
Aerospace products often involve long service lives, complex configuration control, safety-critical characteristics, traceability obligations, and multiple tiers of external providers. The 9100 additions give an organization a common framework for identifying operational risk, controlling product safety, and using objective information about materials and processes. They do not replace engineering approval, customer specifications, statutory obligations, or special-process qualification.

IAQG reports more than 18,000 AQMS certifications covering 25,000 sites. The page reporting those figures does not state a publication year, so the numbers should be treated as IAQG’s undated published count rather than a current global census.
What certification does—and does not—mean
What it demonstrates
- Your organization has a quality-management system audited against the applicable 9100-family requirements.
- The audit is performed through the IAQG Certification Scheme by a participating, accredited certification body.
- The certificate has a defined organizational and activity scope that customers can review.
- Your organization accepts ongoing surveillance and the need to address audit nonconformities through the certification body’s process.
What it does not promise
- It is not approval of a specific aircraft part, design, material, or special process.
- It is not a substitute for a customer contract, purchase-order clauses, regulatory approval, or product qualification.
- It does not guarantee that you will win work or that every customer will accept your scope without additional review.
- It does not automatically require every external provider to hold the same certificate or an accreditation.
The certification route, step by step
- Obtain the applicable standard. Start with the current standard that matches your activity: 9100, 9110, or 9120. IAQG’s route begins with obtaining the relevant AQMS standard. Confirm the edition and authorized source when purchasing; no particular seller or market listing is established here.
- Map your existing quality system. Compare your documented processes and actual practices with the applicable clauses. Include operational risk management, product-safety controls, supplier and purchased-service controls, configuration and traceability practices, and the data review or testing controls relevant to your products. Record where a process already meets a requirement, where evidence is missing, and who owns each corrective action.
- Define the certification scope. Identify legal entities, sites, products, services, shifts, and outsourced activities that belong in the proposed scope. A certificate covering one site or one activity does not automatically cover another site or an excluded process. Ask candidate certification bodies how they expect multi-site or remote activities to be represented before accepting a quotation.
- Create and maintain an OASIS account. IAQG says OASIS supports organization contacts, access management, audit feedback, access to audit reports, and responses to audit nonconformities. Set up the account early, assign controlled access to responsible personnel, and ensure contact information remains current.
- Request quotations from suitable certification bodies. Choose a body that participates in the IAQG Certification Scheme and has relevant accredited scope. Provide an accurate description of sites, headcount, processes, shifts, products, and outsourced work so the quotation reflects the intended audit scope.
- Follow the body’s initial-certification process. The certification body conducts the audits and manages findings under the applicable scheme rules. IAQG states that certification bodies audit to ISO/IEC 17021-1, IAQG 9104/1, and IAQG 9101. Your selected body—not the general IAQG overview—will provide the audit schedule, preparation instructions, quotation terms, finding-response rules, and certification decision process.
Build evidence before the auditor arrives
Certification is based on evidence that the system works, not simply on a manual containing copied clauses. Build an evidence map that connects each applicable requirement to a responsible process, controlled information, records, and performance checks.
- Leadership and planning: establish quality objectives, responsibilities, risk decisions, and management review inputs and outputs.
- Operational risk: show how risks are identified, assessed, mitigated, monitored, and communicated when they affect delivery or product conformity.
- Product safety: identify safety-related responsibilities, controls, escalation routes, and records appropriate to your products and services.
- Configuration and traceability: control revisions, identification, status, records, and links between requirements, work instructions, materials, and delivered product.
- Supplier control: evaluate external providers according to the effect of their goods or services, communicate applicable requirements, and verify received outputs.
- Corrective action and improvement: retain evidence that problems are contained, causes are evaluated, actions are implemented, and effectiveness is checked.
Run an internal review using real work orders, purchase records, inspection data, nonconformities, and customer communications. That exercise reveals whether employees follow the documented process and whether records are retrievable, rather than merely showing that procedures exist.

How to select and check a certification body
IAQG says the participating certification-body list is available in OASIS. Use the current OASIS information to confirm participation and then verify that the body’s accredited scope is relevant to your activities. OASIS also provides information about certified or registered suppliers, national accreditation bodies, certification bodies, and authenticated aerospace auditors.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Selection factor | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| IAQG participation | The body appears in current OASIS information as a participating certification body. | A general ISO certification capability alone does not establish participation in the aerospace scheme. |
| Accredited scope | The relevant standard, industry activity, sites, and geographic coverage are within its accreditation. | A body may participate but still lack the scope needed for your organization. |
| Audit scope and quotation | The proposal accurately reflects locations, headcount, shifts, processes, and outsourced work. | Incomplete information can produce a misleading quote or later scope changes. |
| Scheduling and logistics | Available dates, auditor availability, travel or remote-work arrangements, and report timing. | These affect your preparation plan and operational disruption. |
| Customer or contract requirements | Any named body, accreditation, language, site, or certificate-scope condition in contracts or bids. | Certification alone cannot override a customer’s written requirement. |
IAQG’s overview does not establish a universal price, lead time, number of audit days, success rate, or guaranteed certification date. Compare those commercial details directly in written quotations, and ask how changes in scope, additional visits, corrective-action reviews, and surveillance are handled.
OASIS: where certification status is checked
OASIS is IAQG’s official information system for the scheme. IAQG describes it as a reliable source for certification and registration data. A supplier can use it to confirm its own organizational record, review certified-supplier information, check certification-body participation, and manage audit-related access and responses.

Before relying on a supplier’s certificate, compare the legal organization name, covered sites, standard, scope wording, status, and validity information shown in OASIS with the document supplied by the organization. If the entries do not align, ask the certification body to clarify rather than assuming that a certificate for one location covers the entire company.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.External providers and the calibration question
IAQG addressed a frequent supplier concern in a February 2024 clarification: “Is a calibration supplier required to be accredited?” Its answer for the 9100:2016 series is that the standard does not, by itself, require a calibration supplier to hold ISO/IEC 17025, Z540.1, 9100, or ISO 9001 certification.
The relevant control is effect-based. Controls over external providers and purchased services depend on how the provider’s output affects subsequent product realization or the final product. A supplier should therefore evaluate the measurement service, equipment, uncertainty, traceability, records, and risk to conformity, then apply controls proportionate to that effect.

This clarification is not a blanket exemption from customer, regulatory, statutory, or product-specific requirements. A contract may still name a required accreditation or standard. The organization remains responsible for determining and demonstrating that its measurement resources and purchased services are suitable for the intended use.
The same principle answers the broader question of whether these controls apply to service suppliers such as tooling and calibration providers or only to airplane-part manufacturers: external-provider controls can apply whenever an outsourced good or service affects subsequent product realization or the final product. The exact control and evidence should follow the risk and applicable requirements.
Special qualification context: 9133
IAQG states that original component manufacturers and designated value-added distributors seeking product qualification under 9133 must maintain 9100 certification visible in OASIS. That is a particular product-qualification context. It should not be expanded into a claim that every aerospace supplier needs 9133 qualification or that every supplier must hold 9100 regardless of its activity.
What happens after the audit
The certification body evaluates conformity using the aerospace scheme rules and records any nonconformities. Your organization must respond through the body’s process, provide objective evidence where requested, and maintain the system for continuing surveillance. OASIS supports access to audit reports and responses to audit nonconformities.
Keep certification information synchronized across proposals, customer portals, certificates, and OASIS. When a site, legal entity, product line, or scope changes, notify the certification body before assuming the existing certificate remains adequate. A certificate is useful to customers only when its scope accurately describes the work they are buying.
A practical readiness checklist
- Have you selected 9100, 9110, or 9120 based on your principal activity?
- Have you obtained the applicable, current standard from an authorized source?
- Is the proposed scope explicit about legal entities, sites, products, services, and outsourced processes?
- Can employees produce objective records for risk, product safety, configuration, traceability, supplier control, and corrective action?
- Have you evaluated external providers according to their effect on product realization or the final product?
- Have you checked customer and regulatory clauses for additional accreditation or qualification requirements?
- Is your OASIS account configured with current contacts and appropriate access?
- Have you confirmed each candidate certification body’s IAQG participation and relevant accredited scope in OASIS?
- Do quotations state assumptions about sites, headcount, scheduling, surveillance, findings, and scope changes?
Bottom line for aerospace suppliers
AS9100 certification is a structured way to demonstrate that an aerospace, space, or defense quality-management system has been independently audited under the IAQG scheme. Start by matching the standard to your activity, then build evidence around risk, product safety, configuration, suppliers, and conformity. Verify certification bodies and certificate records through OASIS, and treat calibration and other outsourced services according to their effect and any customer or regulatory rules. The certificate strengthens supply-chain credibility, but it never replaces product approval, contract compliance, or a customer’s right to perform its own oversight.
