If you own an index fund or ETF, its displayed value may fall, but one week alone does not change your goal, asset allocation or ability to take risk. Selling solely because of that decline can turn a paper loss into a realized loss and leave you out of a later recovery.
The right response depends on which Nasdaq benchmark moved, whether you are still contributing or withdrawing, your written investment plan, emergency reserves, taxes and risk tolerance. The sections below show how to interpret the move without treating one weekly percentage as a forecast for the next year or decade.

What a one-week index loss actually changes
An index is a calculation that represents a basket of securities. When the securities’ market prices fall between one weekly close and the next, the index level falls. An index fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that seeks to track it will generally decline too, although its return can differ because of fees, trading costs, dividends, portfolio sampling and tracking error.
Investor.gov defines an index fund as a product seeking to track a market index, while describing long-term investors as people investing for goals many years away, such as retirement. A weekly move therefore changes the current quoted value of the account, not automatically the long-term objective or the risk capacity that supported the original plan.

Paper loss versus realized loss
If you continue to hold, the lower balance is an unrealized, or paper, loss. It becomes a realized loss when you sell at the lower price. Selling to avoid further declines can also mean missing a subsequent recovery. A recovery is possible but not guaranteed or scheduled; past performance does not guarantee future results.
Why your fund may not match the headline index
The index headline and your account are not identical. A fund may charge an expense ratio, incur transaction costs, hold a representative sample instead of every security, or receive dividends on a different schedule. Those effects create tracking difference. Check the fund’s prospectus and performance page rather than assuming the index’s weekly percentage is exactly your return.
“Nasdaq” is not one benchmark
Before interpreting a Nasdaq decline, identify the exact index. The Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq-100 have different constituents, weighting methods and sector exposures. A news report that says “the Nasdaq fell” without naming the benchmark is incomplete for portfolio analysis.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which benchmark? | Composite, Nasdaq-100 and other Nasdaq indexes can move by different amounts because they contain different securities and weights. |
| Price return or total return? | A price-return index tracks price changes only. A total-return version includes reinvested dividends. Your fund’s return may reflect dividends even when a headline quotes a price index. |
| How concentrated is it? | Heavy weight in a small group of companies or sectors can make an index more sensitive to a particular earnings report, interest-rate change or industry shock. |
| What does the fund charge? | Fees and trading costs reduce the return relative to the index, and tracking error can widen the gap. |
The S&P 500 is a large-capitalization U.S. equity index. It is broad relative to a narrow sector index, but it is still entirely U.S. stocks and its largest companies account for a substantial share of its movement. Neither the S&P 500 nor a Nasdaq benchmark is automatically “safe” over a one-week horizon.

How a Nasdaq loss can differ from an S&P 500 loss
Compare the benchmark construction, concentration, diversification, fund costs and your own time horizon—not just which line on a chart is down more. Two funds tracking different indexes can fall by different amounts in the same week while both remain appropriate or inappropriate for a particular investor.
| Comparison point | Nasdaq benchmark fund | S&P 500 fund |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark identity | Must be specified, such as Nasdaq Composite or Nasdaq-100. | Large-cap U.S. equity index. |
| Concentration | Varies by Nasdaq index; technology and growth exposure may be prominent, but the exact weights depend on the benchmark. | Broad large-cap coverage, with returns still influenced heavily by its largest constituents. |
| Diversification | Depends on the selected Nasdaq index and its rules; do not infer diversification from the word “Nasdaq.” | Spreads exposure across many large U.S. companies, but not across all countries or asset classes. |
| Investor check | Read the fund’s holdings, rebalancing rules, fees and tracking record. | Read the fund’s holdings, fees, tracking record and whether dividends are included in the quoted return. |
A weekly percentage should not be treated as a signal that one benchmark will outperform for the next year or decade. It is a description of one interval, not a forecast.
If you are still accumulating, should you keep contributing?
For an investor adding money for a distant goal, continuing the scheduled contribution is often consistent with the plan. Dollar-cost averaging means investing equal dollar amounts at regular intervals. When prices are lower, the same contribution buys more shares; when prices are higher, it buys fewer. This reduces the risk of committing all available money at one moment, but it does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses.

Suppose a scheduled contribution is $500 and a fund’s share price is $100. You buy five shares. If the price is $90 on the next contribution date, the same $500 buys about 5.56 shares. The extra shares improve the outcome only if prices eventually rise; a lower price is not proof that a rebound is imminent.

What to review before changing the contribution
- Confirm that the contribution amount and schedule still fit your budget.
- Keep an emergency reserve separate from money intended for long-term market exposure.
- Check whether your target allocation has drifted and whether your plan calls for rebalancing.
- Consider taxes and account rules before selling or moving investments.
- Revisit your risk tolerance if the weekly decline is causing you to abandon the strategy you chose.
Regular investing and compounding work over years, not over a single week. Investor.gov describes compounding as allowing money left invested to generate potential returns on prior returns, while noting that stock returns are uncertain.
If you are near withdrawals, the same loss matters more
An investor approaching a planned withdrawal has less time to wait for a recovery. If withdrawals force sales while prices are depressed, the account may have fewer shares available for a later rebound. This is sequence-of-returns risk in practical terms: the order of gains and losses can affect how long a portfolio lasts when money is being taken out.
Questions for a near-retirement review
- What cash or high-quality reserve covers near-term spending without requiring an immediate stock sale?
- Which withdrawals are essential, and which could be delayed if markets remain weak?
- Does the written allocation match your current time horizon and ability to tolerate losses?
- What are the tax consequences of selling in each account?
- Has your income, pension, debt or emergency-reserve situation changed since the plan was created?
There is no universal allocation that the cited investor-education guidance prescribes for every person. The appropriate adjustment depends on time horizon, risk acceptance and financial capacity, rather than on the fact that one weekly close was negative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs a bad week a correction?
Not necessarily. “Correction” is commonly used for a larger decline from a recent high, while a routine down week can be ordinary volatility. The label is less useful than the size, duration and cause of the movement—and how those characteristics relate to your plan.

Fidelity’s historical summary, using data through December 31, 2025, reports about three 5% downturns per year, one 10% correction per year and one roughly 15% correction every three years. These are historical averages, not a timetable. The same source reports an average S&P 500 decline of about 14% in a calendar year since 1980. A year that finishes higher can still include several sharp declines along the way.
| Historical reference | What it does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|
| About three 5% downturns per year | Declines of this scale have occurred regularly in the cited history; it does not predict the next week. |
| One 10% correction per year | A 10% decline has been a recurring historical event, but the interval between events varies. |
| Roughly one 15% correction every three years | A long-run frequency estimate, not a promise that a decline will occur or end on schedule. |
| About −14% average S&P 500 calendar-year decline since 1980 | Shows that sizable intra-year weakness can be normal even though annual results differ widely. |
Investor.gov sometimes uses 7% to 10% as an estimate for a long-term diversified U.S.-stock annual return. That figure is an estimate, not a forecast or promise, and it cannot be converted into an expected weekly result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision process after a losing week
- Identify the exact benchmark and interval. Record whether the report refers to the Nasdaq Composite, Nasdaq-100 or another index; note the start and end dates, close-to-close convention and whether the figure is price return or total return.
- Measure your own account. Compare the fund’s return for the same dates, including dividends, fees and any cash balance. Do not substitute an index headline for your personal result.
- Re-read the investment policy. Check the goal, target allocation, contribution schedule, rebalancing rules and conditions for changing risk.
- Classify your time horizon. Someone saving for a goal many years away generally has more time to absorb volatility than someone funding next year’s expenses.
- Check liquidity and taxes. Verify emergency reserves and understand potential tax costs before selling.
- Take only a plan-based action. Continue scheduled contributions, rebalance or change the allocation only when the written strategy and current circumstances support it—not because a headline is alarming.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Nasdaq fund is the same
Two funds can track different Nasdaq benchmarks, use different weighting rules and charge different fees. Read the fund name, prospectus and holdings.

Confusing a weekly move with a trend
A single interval contains too little information to establish a new long-term return expectation. Review longer periods and your objective instead of extrapolating the week.
Best Value
Ignoring dividends and tracking difference
A price-index headline may omit dividends, while a fund’s net asset value reflects expenses and portfolio operations. Use like-for-like total-return data when evaluating performance.
Changing risk after the loss has already occurred
Selling after a fall can lock in the decline. If the loss reveals that the allocation was too aggressive, make a deliberate, tax-aware plan change rather than an impulsive exit.
Expecting a scheduled recovery
Historical recoveries demonstrate that markets have risen after many downturns, but neither the timing nor the magnitude of a future recovery is guaranteed.

What the weekly loss means for different investors
| Investor situation | Immediate interpretation | Plan-based focus |
|---|---|---|
| Decades from retirement and still contributing | Lower prices reduce the account’s current value and may allow scheduled purchases to buy more shares. | Maintain the contribution and allocation if they still fit the written plan. |
| Several years from a major goal | There is less time than for a young accumulator, so volatility deserves a fresh risk-capacity review. | Match the allocation and reserve to the goal date; do not rely on a guaranteed recovery. |
| Already withdrawing | Forced sales can reduce the number of shares available for later gains. | Review cash reserves, withdrawal flexibility, taxes and the sustainable allocation. |
| Investor who cannot tolerate the decline | The reaction may reveal a mismatch between stated and actual risk tolerance. | Document a diversified, affordable allocation before the next decline rather than timing the market. |
The bottom line
For most long-term index investors, one losing Nasdaq or S&P 500 week is information about short-term volatility, not a command to sell. Identify the exact benchmark, distinguish your fund’s return from the index, continue or change contributions according to your plan, and give special attention to liquidity and withdrawal timing if you are near a financial goal. Diversification, costs, tracking error, time horizon and risk tolerance matter far more than the emotional impact of one weekly close.
