A small customer-service exception can make someone feel recognized—but one customer’s story is not proof that a gift will guarantee loyalty. In an opinion essay for Entrepreneur, James Henderson, CEO of Exclusive Resorts, uses two shopping experiences to argue that businesses should let frontline employees exercise judgment when customers make reasonable requests.
The tie that made a recent customer feel recognized
Henderson says he had recently started buying Eton shirts and had spent more than $200 when the brand announced a promotion: spend $200 and receive a complimentary tie. He contacted customer service to ask whether the offer could be applied to his recent order. Within 24 hours, he says, he received the reply: “Of course. The tie is on its way.”

What mattered to Henderson was not simply receiving an extra item. He says the response made him feel recognized as a customer. The gesture acknowledged the timing of his purchase rather than treating the promotion’s formal start date as the only relevant consideration.

Henderson contrasts the Eton exchange with a request to an unnamed premium trouser brand. He says he had bought nearly all his trousers from the brand for more than five years, then missed a Black Friday promotion by a few hours. When he asked a local store to honor the discount, he says the request was declined twice.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These are Henderson’s personal accounts, not independently verified descriptions of either company’s general service policies. The essay does not name the trouser brand. Its contrast is between one request that was accommodated and another that was refused—not a measured comparison of the companies’ customer experience or performance.
Why discretion matters in customer service
Henderson’s recommendation is to empower frontline employees to resolve reasonable requests with empathy and judgment. A fixed policy may be consistent, but applying it without room for context can leave a loyal customer feeling that the relationship counts for nothing. Conversely, a thoughtful exception can communicate that the business sees the person behind the transaction.

For a business, the practical implication is not to approve every request or give every customer a discount. It is to define sensible boundaries and equip employees to decide when an exception fits the company’s service standards. That operational takeaway is an interpretation of Henderson’s two anecdotes; the essay does not evaluate a particular empowerment system.
What the story can—and cannot—establish
Henderson argues that a modest gesture can contribute to loyalty, future business, and recommendations. His story illustrates how a customer may interpret an interaction, but it does not establish that the tie caused later purchases, referrals, or measurable financial returns. The essay provides no retention data, controlled comparison, or broader study.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The useful lesson is narrower and more actionable: when a customer makes a reasonable request, the way an employee responds can shape whether that person feels valued. That is a service principle worth considering, not a guarantee that any particular exception will win a customer for life.
