A SharePoint “code injection” flaw does not describe one fixed risk: depending on the vulnerability, it may let an attacker run code on a server, access content or perform actions as a logged-in user, or place malicious content in a user’s browser. The exact CVE and deployment matter. Microsoft’s older advisories describe distinct 2013 issues, while its 2025 incident report covers attacks on vulnerable, internet-facing on-premises servers—not SharePoint Online.
What could a SharePoint injection flaw expose?
The impact depends on the specific vulnerability. “Injection” is not a reliable shorthand for a single exploit path or consequence.
| Example | Potential effect | What Microsoft says an attacker needed | Scope established by the source |
|---|---|---|---|
| CVE-2013-5059, a page-content vulnerability | Could allow remote code execution in the W3WP service-account context. | Authentication to the target site, unless anonymous access was enabled. | Microsoft’s MS13-100 bulletin; the cited description does not establish that this applies to every SharePoint deployment. Microsoft MS13-100 |
| CVE-2013-3179 and CVE-2013-3180, XSS vulnerabilities | Could expose content the attacker was not authorized to read, allow actions as the logged-on user (including changing permissions or deleting content), or put malicious content in that user’s browser. | An authenticated attacker submitting a specially crafted request. | Microsoft’s MS13-067 bulletin; these XSS examples are separate from the page-content RCE issue. Microsoft MS13-067 |
| 2025 on-premises SharePoint attacks involving CVE-2025-49706 and CVE-2025-49704 | Microsoft reported web shells after successful exploitation of authentication-bypass and remote-code-execution vulnerabilities. One observed shell retrieved MachineKey data and returned it in a GET response; this was an observed post-exploitation behavior, not a guaranteed outcome of every attack. | Microsoft described attacks against vulnerable, internet-facing on-premises servers and recommended defenses against unauthenticated attacks. | Microsoft said the vulnerabilities covered in its report did not affect SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365. Microsoft’s July 2025 report |
What do attackers need to exploit one?
There is no universal prerequisite. For CVE-2013-5059, Microsoft said authentication was required unless the target site permitted anonymous access. For CVE-2013-3179 and CVE-2013-3180, it described an authenticated attacker sending a specially crafted request. Those conditions belong to those specific vulnerabilities; they should not be applied to other SharePoint flaws.
The 2025 case had a different scope: Microsoft described exploitation of vulnerable, internet-facing on-premises servers and observed reconnaissance and attempted exploitation through POST requests to the ToolPane endpoint. That report is not evidence that every SharePoint vulnerability is remotely exploitable without authentication. Nor does it establish that SharePoint Online was affected; Microsoft explicitly said it was not affected by the vulnerabilities covered in that report.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why server-side code execution can matter beyond a page
Microsoft’s 2013 description places the potential execution for CVE-2013-5059 in the W3WP service-account context. That identifies the account context for the possible code execution; it does not, by itself, establish that an attacker automatically gains every administrator or farm privilege.
The 2025 incident report illustrates a separate post-compromise concern. Microsoft observed a web shell named spinstall0.aspx and similar variants retrieving MachineKey data. MachineKey material is sensitive server key data, so its retrieval is a concrete exposure to investigate after a compromise—not a claim that every SharePoint flaw exposes those keys.

How administrators can reduce risk
Keep on-premises SharePoint supported and updated
Microsoft recommends using supported on-premises SharePoint Server versions with the latest security updates. The applicable updates and configuration depend on the product version and current vendor guidance, so administrators should verify the instructions for their deployment rather than rely on a generic patch recipe. Microsoft’s recommendation
Enable and configure antimalware scanning
Microsoft recommends enabling AMSI with Microsoft Defender Antivirus or equivalent protection for on-premises deployments, and configuring AMSI in Full Mode. Confirm the supported configuration for the SharePoint version in use.

Limit exposure and monitor servers
CISA advises monitoring affected servers, blocking external access to SharePoint Central Administration, and restricting farm and database communications to systems that require them. Its alert points administrators to Microsoft’s hardening guidance for role-specific ports, services and Web.config settings; check current vendor guidance before changing those controls. Treat unexpected web shells or evidence that sensitive MachineKey data was retrieved as incident-response signals. Preserve relevant logs and server evidence, restrict access as appropriate, and investigate the affected environment rather than assuming that installing an update alone resolves an existing compromise. CISA’s alert recommends detecting and remediating potential compromise, alongside hardening and monitoring affected servers.
