A returned sample could answer two connected questions: whether Phobos and Deimos formed from debris blasted off young Mars or are asteroids captured by Mars, and whether grains of Mars itself were later thrown onto the moons by impacts. The current Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) plan would collect material from Phobos; Deimos is a remote-observation target, not a second sample-return destination.
Those conclusions do not exist yet. MMX is designed to test the competing explanations by combining laboratory analysis of Phobos material with spacecraft measurements of both moons.

The direct answer: a Phobos sample would test Mars’s moon system history
JAXA describes MMX as a mission that will explore Phobos and Deimos, collect a sample from Phobos, and return it to Earth. Its central question is whether the moons are remnants of an early collision involving Mars or asteroids that Mars captured from elsewhere. The mission overview explains that remote sensing and detailed laboratory analysis are intended to distinguish those possibilities: JAXA’s MMX mission overview.
A sample could also contain a different kind of record. Large impacts on Mars can eject Martian rocks and dust into space, and some of that material could reach the moons. If Martian grains are present in the collected material, scientists could use them as indirect evidence of past Martian surface environments. A NASA technical report describes this transported ejecta as a potential source of time-resolved geochemical information, not as a guaranteed component of any particular sample: NASA Technical Reports Server record.

Thus, “what would it tell us?” has a conditional answer. It could reveal how the moons formed, what material they are made of, and—if Mars-ejected material is identifiable—something about Mars’s surface history. The mission’s observations and analyses are planned tests, not completed findings.
What MMX will actually collect and observe
Phobos is the sample-return target
The current plan calls for MMX to collect material from Phobos and return it to Earth. JAXA states a goal of returning more than 10 grams; that is a mission target, not a measured amount already delivered. The agency’s mission page gives the target without a publication year: JAXA’s MMX mission page.
The title’s “Phobos or Deimos” can therefore be misleading if read literally. The mission includes both moons, but the sample is planned to come from Phobos. Deimos will be examined remotely, providing system-wide context rather than a returned Deimos specimen.

Remote observations of Deimos can show how its surface, composition and physical character compare with Phobos. That comparison matters because an origin model must explain the two moons as a system, not just one object. JAXA’s science description covers the planned observations, instruments and sample-return operations: JAXA MMX science.
Laboratory work is only one part of the evidence
Once returned, Phobos material can be examined with laboratory techniques unavailable on a distant spacecraft. Those results will be interpreted alongside images, compositional measurements and other observations made at Phobos and Deimos. A chemical measurement without geological context could be ambiguous; the spacecraft data help show where material came from and how it is distributed across each moon.

The two leading explanations for the moons’ origin
| Origin hypothesis | What it proposes | Evidence MMX would seek |
|---|---|---|
| Giant-impact debris | Material produced when a large collision struck young Mars later assembled into the moons. | Composition and physical character that fit material derived from Mars or an impact-generated debris environment, supported by remote observations of both moons. |
| Captured asteroid | Mars gravitationally captured asteroids that formed elsewhere and retained material from outside the Mars system. | Composition and character more consistent with an imported asteroid population than with debris created by a Martian impact, again checked against observations of both moons. |
JAXA presents these as competing explanations to be tested together, rather than as conclusions already settled by existing measurements. No single color, spectrum or chemical ratio is identified in the mission description as decisive. The planned approach combines many observations with analysis of returned material: mission overview.
How a sample could distinguish those models
Composition and mineral character
Laboratory analysis can determine what Phobos material contains and how its minerals and particles are arranged. Scientists would compare those results with the kinds of material expected under each origin model. If the sample is compatible with material generated by a collision involving Mars, that would strengthen the impact explanation. If it instead resembles an asteroid that formed away from Mars and lacks a convincing connection to Martian impact debris, the capture explanation would gain support.

These are model comparisons, not a simple “Mars-like” versus “not Mars-like” test. Space weathering, mixing and later impacts can alter a surface. For that reason, JAXA’s plan emphasizes combining sample analysis with remote sensing rather than declaring an origin from one measurement.
Surface setting and distribution
Images and spacecraft instruments show the geological setting of the collection site and how materials vary across Phobos. They can establish whether the collected particles are representative of a broader surface unit or come from an unusual patch. Deimos observations add a second reference point for asking whether both moons share a history or have different source materials.
Two collection approaches
JAXA’s science page describes two planned ways to collect material from Phobos. The existence of alternative collection methods gives mission planners more than one way to obtain a scientifically useful sample, but the page does not imply that either method has already produced material. The returned quantity and composition remain future results.

A separate question: could the sample contain Mars itself?
The origin of the moons and the transport of Martian ejecta are related but distinct questions. Phobos may contain material that formed locally as part of the moon. It could also contain particles launched from Mars by later impacts. A sample can therefore include evidence about both the moons and Mars, but only if scientists can identify which particles came from which source.

An impact on Mars can accelerate fragments above the surface. Some ejecta may enter trajectories that intersect a moon. Over many impact events, a small amount of Martian material could accumulate on a moon’s surface. The technical analysis linked above treats this transported material as a possible record of Martian environments through time; it does not establish that MMX’s collection will contain a recoverable Martian grain.
What those grains could record
If a particle is demonstrably Martian, its chemistry could preserve information about the surface environment at the time its source rock formed or was altered. A collection containing particles from different events might provide a sequence of clues rather than one snapshot. The useful signal would depend on identifying the grains, determining their provenance and separating Martian material from Phobos-native material.
Why absence would not settle the issue
Failing to find recognizable Martian ejecta in one sample would not prove that impacts never transported material to Phobos. Ejecta may be unevenly distributed, buried, altered or simply absent from the selected collection site. Conversely, finding a Martian grain would illuminate impact transport without automatically proving that the entire moon formed from Mars.
What this could add to Mars’s broader history
Testing the formation of the moons
If evidence favors an impact origin, the moons become physical remnants of a major event in early Mars’s history. Their material could constrain what was present near Mars when the collision occurred and how debris later assembled. The exact implications would depend on the measured composition and the agreement between sample data and spacecraft observations.

If evidence favors capture, Phobos and Deimos would instead preserve material introduced from outside the Mars system. Their composition could help identify the kind of bodies Mars encountered and captured, while their present state would record how those bodies evolved after capture.
Connecting moon evidence to Mars’s interior and orbital evolution
NASA lists the nature, origin, structure, composition and evolution of Mars and its moons among its Mars science objectives. NASA also links the moons’ orbital evolution to understanding Mars’s interior history: NASA’s Mars science objectives.
That connection is broader than the chemistry of one sample. The moons’ origin and subsequent orbital behavior are part of the history of the Mars system. A better-constrained origin scenario would help scientists interpret how Mars and its satellites changed together, even if the sample contains no direct piece of Martian bedrock.
What evidence MMX combines
| Evidence stream | What it can address | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Returned Phobos material | Detailed mineral, chemical and physical analysis of collected particles. | Whether every particle is native to Phobos or whether one result represents the whole moon. |
| Phobos remote sensing | Collection-site geology, surface variation and the distribution of compositional units. | A complete subsurface composition or an unambiguous origin from one spectrum. |
| Deimos observations | Whether the second moon shares measurable characteristics with Phobos or differs from it. | A laboratory analysis of Deimos material, because no Deimos sample return is planned. |
| Orbital and system context | How moon formation and later orbital evolution fit Mars’s history. | A direct date or a settled probability for either origin hypothesis when the mission sources provide none. |
MEGANE and other instruments described by JAXA contribute compositional and contextual measurements. Their role is to make the returned sample interpretable within the larger Phobos–Deimos system, not to replace laboratory analysis: JAXA MMX science.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePossible outcomes and what each would mean
Outcome 1: evidence favors an impact origin
A coherent match between Phobos material, remote observations and materials expected from a collision involving young Mars would support the giant-impact model. Scientists could then use the moon material to refine their picture of that event and the debris that followed it. This would still be a reconstruction of early Mars, not a complete history of the planet.

Outcome 2: evidence favors capture
If the returned material and the moons’ observed properties fit captured asteroids better than Martian impact debris, the capture model would become the stronger explanation. Phobos and Deimos would then be valuable samples of bodies introduced into the Mars system, potentially preserving information about material formed elsewhere.
Outcome 3: a mixed or ambiguous record
The moons could contain mixtures, altered surfaces or evidence that does not cleanly select one model. In that case, the result would still constrain the possibilities by showing which simple versions of the hypotheses fail. Remote sensing of Deimos and additional analysis of Phobos material would be especially important in separating local processing from original composition.
Outcome 4: identifiable Martian ejecta
Finding well-characterized Martian particles would open a second research track: reconstructing aspects of Mars’s surface environment from material delivered to a moon. That discovery would complement, rather than replace, the origin test for Phobos and Deimos.
What is known now—and what is not
- Known: MMX is planned to return a sample from Phobos while observing both moons remotely.
- Known: JAXA’s stated return goal is more than 10 grams; no returned quantity has been reported.
- Known: The mission is designed to test giant-impact and captured-asteroid explanations.
- Possible: Some collected particles could be ejecta from Mars, which might preserve clues to Martian surface environments.
- Not established: The composition of the eventual sample, the amount of Martian ejecta it may contain, or a settled probability for either origin hypothesis.
Keeping those categories separate prevents a mission objective from being mistaken for a scientific result. The answer will emerge only after collection, return and analysis.
Why Deimos still matters even without a sample
Deimos is not merely a backdrop for the Phobos experiment. Comparing spacecraft observations of both moons can reveal whether they share composition, surface processes and formation signatures. A Phobos sample interpreted without that comparison could be mistaken for a complete explanation of the pair. Deimos’s remote data help test whether one origin story accounts for both objects or whether their histories diverged.
In practical terms, the strongest answer to the reader’s question will come from the combination JAXA planned: a laboratory-calibrated Phobos sample, detailed observations of Phobos’s surface, and a system-level view that includes Deimos. Until those data exist, the scientifically accurate wording is “could reveal” and “is intended to test,” not “has proved.”
