A Microsoft Office “lifetime license” is a one-time purchase of a specific Office release, not a pass to every future version. For the current consumer release, Office 2024, you receive classic desktop apps for one PC or Mac. The exact apps depend on the edition: Office Home 2024 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, while Office Home & Business 2024 also includes Outlook.
You can keep using the installed apps after activation without staying continuously online, but internet access is still required for installation, activation, periodic reactivation and updates. Microsoft includes security updates, not ongoing feature upgrades, and currently lists support for Office 2024 ending on October 9, 2029.

What “lifetime license” means
Microsoft does not sell a consumer license that grants every Office version forever. “Lifetime” is retail shorthand for a one-time purchase: you pay once for a named edition, install it on one computer, and use that release for as long as it remains activated and supported under Microsoft’s license terms.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For the current consumer release, that named version is Office 2024. The purchase is perpetual for that version rather than recurring like a Microsoft 365 subscription. If Microsoft releases a later major version, the Office 2024 purchase does not automatically become a license for it.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Office Apps | Includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with ease.
- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- Consider Upgrading to Microsoft 365 | Get premium benefits with a Microsoft 365 subscription, including ongoing updates, advanced security, and access to premium versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more, plus 1TB cloud storage per person and multi-device support for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
The word lifetime therefore describes the payment model and the right to use a particular release. It does not promise lifetime technical support, free upgrades, unlimited devices, permanent offline operation or access to Microsoft 365’s online services.
Which apps are included?
Check the exact product name before buying. Microsoft sells consumer editions with different app bundles, and an app included in one edition should not be assumed to be present in another.
| Edition | Included desktop apps | License scope and intended use |
|---|---|---|
| Office Home 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote | One PC or Mac; home or school use |
| Office Home & Business 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook | One PC or Mac; home or work use |
Outlook is the practical dividing line for many buyers. If you need the classic desktop email, calendar and contacts application, Office Home 2024 does not include it; Office Home & Business 2024 does.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese consumer bundles are different from Office LTSC 2024, Microsoft’s on-premises commercial and government product. LTSC has its own licensing and application lineup. For example, Access is Windows-only in that product, and Publisher is not included. Do not use an LTSC app list to evaluate a consumer Office 2024 purchase.
What the one-time purchase gives you
Desktop applications for one computer
The consumer Office 2024 license is for one PC or Mac. It is not the multi-device entitlement associated with Microsoft 365 subscriptions. If you replace your computer, transfer rights and activation requirements depend on Microsoft’s current license terms; the product should not be treated as a family-wide or household-wide device license.

- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
Use after installation and activation
Once the apps are installed and activated, you can open and edit locally stored documents while offline. This is useful on a flight, in a location with unreliable connectivity or on a computer that is temporarily disconnected.
Security updates for the purchased release
Microsoft says Office 2024 receives security updates. Those updates help address vulnerabilities in the version you bought, but they do not turn it into a continuously evolving subscription product.
A fixed set of features
Your purchase includes the capabilities delivered with that Office 2024 edition. Microsoft may correct defects and security problems, but the one-time license does not include the stream of new features supplied to Microsoft 365 subscribers.
What is not included
Microsoft 365 subscription services
A one-time Office purchase is not Microsoft 365. Microsoft specifically identifies OneDrive, Exchange Online and SharePoint Online as subscription services that are not bundled with one-time Office. Cloud-backed features that depend on those services may also be unavailable or limited.
You can still save documents to your local drive, external storage or a separate cloud-storage provider. You may also sign in to other services independently where an app supports that workflow, but the Office purchase itself does not supply Microsoft’s subscription storage, hosted email or collaboration back end.

Future major releases
Office 2024 is a version license, not a standing upgrade entitlement. Microsoft’s Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 FAQ states: “One-time purchases don’t have an upgrade option, which means if you plan to upgrade to the next major release, you’ll have to buy it at full price.”
That means a later major Office release requires a separate purchase. Security fixes for Office 2024 do not count as a free upgrade to the next version.
Unlimited installations
The one-computer limit is a core difference from Microsoft 365. A household with several computers, or a person who regularly uses a desktop, laptop and tablet, should not assume one perpetual license covers every device.
Permanent support
“Lifetime” does not mean Microsoft will provide technical support indefinitely. Microsoft’s current support table lists October 9, 2029 as the end-of-support date for Office 2024 on PC and Mac. After that date, the apps may continue to launch, but Microsoft no longer promises the same security fixes or support coverage for that release.
Internet, activation and offline use
Office 2024 is not suitable for a completely disconnected deployment. Internet access is needed to download and install the software, complete activation and obtain updates. Microsoft also says periodic internet access is required to keep Office activated.

- Prepare connectivity: Use an internet connection during setup. The license must be associated with the required Microsoft account or product key flow for the edition you purchased.
- Install the correct edition: Confirm that the installer matches Office Home 2024 or Office Home & Business 2024 and matches your operating-system platform.
- Activate: Sign in or enter the supplied activation information when prompted. Installation is not the same as activation; both stages must complete.
- Update: Allow Office to download available updates. Updates require connectivity even though document editing can later work offline.
- Reconnect periodically: Bring the computer online from time to time so Office can verify the license and remain activated. Microsoft’s consumer documentation does not specify one universal reactivation interval.
After successful activation, the core apps can be used offline for local work. If activation expires or the installation cannot periodically verify the license, functionality may be restricted until the computer reconnects and the issue is resolved.
Office 2024 versus Microsoft 365
The right choice depends less on the word “lifetime” than on how you work. A one-time purchase favors a stable app set on one computer. A subscription favors multiple devices, online storage, hosted services and continual feature delivery.
| Consideration | Office 2024 one-time purchase | Microsoft 365 subscription |
|---|---|---|
| Payment model | Pay once for a named Office release | Recurring subscription |
| Devices | One PC or Mac for the consumer editions described here | Subscription plans provide broader device entitlements; check the current plan terms |
| Apps | Edition-specific desktop apps; Outlook is included in Home & Business 2024 | Current app versions according to the selected plan |
| Feature updates | Security updates, but no continuing new-feature stream | Current apps and ongoing updates while the subscription is active |
| Cloud services | OneDrive, Exchange Online and SharePoint Online are not bundled | Plan-dependent storage and services are included according to current terms |
| Next major version | Requires a separate purchase | Access follows the active subscription and supported service terms |
Subscription benefits, storage allowances, supported devices and prices can change by plan and region. Verify Microsoft’s current comparison page before making a purchase rather than relying on an old storage figure or an assumption that every plan includes the same services.
How to choose the correct edition
Choose Office Home 2024 when
- You need Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.
- The license is for home or school use.
- You do not require the classic desktop Outlook application.
- One PC or Mac is sufficient.
Choose Office Home & Business 2024 when
- You need Outlook along with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.
- The software will be used for home or work purposes under the edition’s terms.
- You still accept the one-computer limit and the absence of Microsoft 365 subscription services.
Consider Microsoft 365 instead when
- You work across several devices.
- You want current features as they are released.
- You need Microsoft’s included cloud storage or hosted collaboration services.
- You prefer a subscription that keeps you on the current supported app versions.
Buying and setup checklist
- Read the full product name, including “Home” or “Home & Business” and the 2024 release.
- Confirm PC versus Mac compatibility before redeeming a key.
- Verify that Outlook is listed if email and calendar functions are required.
- Check that the license is for one computer, not a multi-device subscription.
- Plan internet access for installation, activation, periodic reactivation and updates.
- Decide where files will be stored because Microsoft 365 cloud services are not part of the one-time purchase.
- Record the Microsoft account used for activation and keep purchase documentation.
- Note the October 9, 2029 support end date when planning a long-lived workstation.
Common misunderstandings and fixes
“I paid once, so I get the next Office version.”
No. The license covers the purchased release. Budget separately for a later major version or choose a subscription if continuous version access is more important than a single payment.
“It says lifetime, so it never needs internet.”
No. Offline editing is possible after setup and activation, but installation, activation, periodic reactivation and updates require connectivity.

“All Office editions include Outlook.”
No. Outlook is listed in Office Home & Business 2024, not Office Home 2024. Check the edition name before purchase.
“The license includes OneDrive and hosted email.”
No. OneDrive, Exchange Online and SharePoint Online are Microsoft 365 services, not components of the consumer Office 2024 one-time purchase.
“Lifetime means Microsoft supports it forever.”
No. Microsoft currently gives Office 2024 a support end date of October 9, 2029. Plan migrations and security policy around that date.
Bottom line for buyers
A Microsoft Office lifetime license is best understood as a perpetual, one-time license for a specified Office release on one PC or Mac. Office Home 2024 supplies Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote; Office Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook. Both omit Microsoft 365 subscription services and future-version upgrades. You can work offline after activation, but you still need periodic internet access, and support is currently scheduled to end on October 9, 2029. Choose it when a fixed app set on one computer meets your needs; choose Microsoft 365 when multi-device access, cloud services or continuous feature updates matter more.
