A mattress sleep trial lets you use a mattress at home for a stated period and ask for a return or exchange if you decide it is not right, provided you meet the seller’s conditions. It gives you more time than a showroom test to judge comfort, support and practical fit. It does not automatically mean a fee-free refund, an unconditional return, eligibility for every buyer or product, or better sleep. The start date, minimum-use rule, eligible purchases, mattress condition, fees and exchange terms determine what you can actually do.
What a mattress sleep trial actually is
A sleep trial is a seller’s return policy designed for a mattress that you have used at home. You buy the mattress, sleep on it during the stated window and, if you decide not to keep it, follow the policy’s return or exchange procedure. The policy may arrange pickup, donation, recycling or another form of removal before a refund is issued.

The point is evaluation under normal conditions. A few minutes in a showroom cannot reproduce several nights of sleeping in your own position, with your own pillow, bed base, room temperature and partner. A trial gives you time to decide whether the mattress feels comfortable and supportive enough for your needs.

That range describes common policy language, not a market-wide guarantee or evidence that a longer trial produces better sleep.

What the trial does not guarantee
It is not an automatic, unconditional refund
A trial normally requires you to satisfy conditions such as buying through an eligible channel, waiting through a break-in period, requesting authorization and keeping the mattress in acceptable condition. Some sellers charge pickup, shipping, restocking or other fees. The initial delivery charge may or may not be refundable. Read the written terms rather than treating the headline “nights” figure as a promise of free returns.
It does not guarantee eligibility for every purchase
Policies can be limited by the original purchaser, household, model, foundation, location and sales channel. A mattress bought from a marketplace, retailer, reseller or another person may not qualify when the policy is limited to direct purchases. Accessories and non-mattress products can have separate rules or no trial at all.
It does not promise improved sleep or a medical result
The trial gives you an opportunity to evaluate a product and, if eligible, return it. The cited policy materials do not promise that you will sleep longer, experience less pain, receive a medical benefit or solve a diagnosed sleep problem. A return right is not a health guarantee.

It does not make the mattress free to use
“Free trial” can be misleading if understood as a free mattress. Sleep Foundation explains that the buyer generally pays for the mattress up front. A refund may be available after a compliant return, but fees, exclusions or failed conditions can reduce or prevent that refund.
How the trial timeline works
- Check the trigger date. Determine whether night one begins on order, shipment or delivery. Tempur-Pedic’s cited direct-purchase policy starts its 90-night period on delivery day.
- Find the minimum break-in period. Some sellers require you to keep the mattress for a specified number of nights before opening a return. Puffy requires at least 14 nights; Tempur-Pedic asks customers to try the mattress for at least 30 days.
- Use the mattress within the allowed period. Keep a record of delivery, the first eligible return date and the final day. Do not assume that contacting the seller on the last night leaves enough time for processing.
- Request authorization before sending anything back. Sleep Number’s cited returns page requires prior return authorization. Follow the seller’s instructions for pickup, packaging, donation or disposal.
- Meet condition requirements. Protect the mattress from stains, tears and other damage. A soiled mattress can void eligibility under some policies.
- Confirm what happens after an exchange. An exchange may end the trial instead of starting a new one. Sleep Number states that a product exchanged during its 100-night in-home trial becomes final sale and does not receive a new trial.
- Track the refund. Ask when the seller considers the return complete and when the refund is initiated. Sleep Number says refunds are generally processed within about 21 days, subject to its terms.
Terms to compare before buying
Compare the usable return opportunity, not just the largest number on a product page. These questions expose the differences that matter:
- When does the clock start? Order, shipment and delivery dates can produce different usable windows.
- Is there a mandatory break-in period? A 100-night headline with a 30-day minimum gives you fewer nights in which to make a return decision than the headline suggests.
- Who qualifies? Check original-purchaser rules, household limits, residency or location restrictions and whether gift recipients can return the product.
- Which products qualify? Confirm the exact mattress model and whether foundations, adjustable bases, smart beds, pillows, sheets, toppers and other accessories are excluded or governed by different rules.
- Which sales channel qualifies? A direct website purchase may be treated differently from a store, marketplace or third-party purchase.
- What will a return cost? Look for pickup, return shipping, restocking, handling and other charges. Also check whether the original delivery fee is refundable.
- What condition is required? Find out whether stains, odors, rips, missing labels or unauthorized alterations disqualify the mattress.
- Is a protector required? Some sellers require one; others merely recommend it. Verify the exact policy.
- Return or exchange? A policy may offer an exchange, store credit or donation option instead of a cash refund.
- Does an exchange restart the clock? Sleep Number’s cited terms say its exchanged product is final sale, so an exchange does not create a second trial.
- How is the mattress collected? Ask whether the seller arranges pickup, requires the buyer to ship it, or directs the buyer to donate or recycle it.
- How long does a refund take? The processing period can begin only after pickup, inspection or proof of donation.

Do not apply one seller’s rule to another. For example, the existence of Tempur-Pedic’s $175-plus-tax fee does not establish that another seller charges the same amount, and Puffy’s two-returns-per-household limit does not establish a universal household rule.

How return shipping and pickup usually fit in
Return logistics are part of the trial, not an afterthought. A mattress is bulky, and many policies do not expect you to put it back in the original box. The seller may schedule a carrier pickup, ask you to coordinate a donation, or provide instructions for recycling. Keep the mattress and packaging in a safe, clean condition until the seller tells you what to do.
Ask these practical questions before ordering:
- Will the seller collect the mattress from the room where it was delivered?
- Must you carry it to the curb or a loading area?
- Who pays for pickup or shipping?
- Is a donation receipt required?
- Can the seller deduct a fee from the refund?
- When does the return window stop: when you submit the request, when pickup occurs or when the seller receives the mattress?
Get authorization in writing and save the request number, emails, pickup confirmation and tracking information. If the seller requires a return request before the deadline, a late pickup should not be allowed to make you miss the window, but your written terms are the evidence to rely on.

Protecting the mattress during the trial
Use the mattress as intended, but take reasonable steps to prevent avoidable damage. Sleep Foundation reports that some sellers can void a trial for a soiled mattress and says a protector can help prevent stains or damage. That is a precaution, not proof that every seller requires a protector.
Before the first night, check the policy for protector language and choose a washable mattress protector if permitted. A waterproof mattress protector can reduce the risk from spills, perspiration and other moisture. Do not assume a protector fixes damage that already exists or guarantees a refund. Keep tags, receipts and included components if the policy says they must be returned.

A trial answers, “Do I want to keep this mattress?” A warranty generally answers, “Does this mattress have a covered defect in materials or workmanship?” You can return a mattress under a trial because it is uncomfortable even when it has no defect. Conversely, a warranty claim is governed by its own definitions, exclusions, duration, proof requirements and remedy.

Do not wait for a defect before using a trial, and do not use a comfort return to bypass warranty procedures. Read both documents. A trial may expire after a set number of nights, while a warranty can last much longer but cover only specified problems and conditions.
What advertising guarantees mean legally
The Federal Trade Commission’s Telemarketing Sales Rule guidance says, “The TSR prohibits sellers and telemarketers from misrepresenting any material aspect — one that likely would have an effect on a consumer’s purchasing decision — of the nature or terms of the seller’s refund, cancellation, exchange, or repurchase policies.” That guidance concerns telemarketing disclosures; it is not a universal federal right to return every mattress bought online or in a store.
In its warranty guide, the FTC says, “The Guides advise that, regardless of the price of the product, advertising terms such as ‘satisfaction guaranteed’ or ‘money back guarantee’ should be used only if the advertiser is willing to provide full refunds to customers when, for any reason, they return the merchandise.” The same passage says advertising should explain material conditions or limitations. Treat this as federal advertising guidance, not as a replacement for the seller’s written mattress policy or applicable state law.
A practical decision checklist
Use this checklist before placing an order:
- Save the current trial, return and warranty pages as PDFs or screenshots.
- Write down the delivery date and calculate the first eligible return date after any break-in requirement.
- Verify that the exact model, size, base and purchase channel qualify.
- Calculate the possible cost of pickup, shipping, restocking or a nonrefundable return fee.
- Confirm whether the original delivery charge is refundable.
- Read the cleanliness, stain, damage and protector rules.
- Check whether the policy allows a refund, exchange, credit or only one of those remedies.
- Find out whether an exchange starts a new trial or becomes final sale.
- Record the authorization method and refund timeline.
- Keep every confirmation until the refund or final resolution appears on your payment account.
Bottom line
A mattress sleep trial is a conditional opportunity to test comfort at home and seek a return or exchange. The headline night count does not tell you when the clock starts, how long you must keep the mattress, who qualifies, what products are covered, what a return costs or whether an exchange ends your rights. It also says nothing by itself about improved sleep or medical outcomes. Read the current policy for your exact purchase, protect the mattress, meet the break-in and authorization deadlines, and treat the warranty as a separate agreement.
