A fossil almost never preserves an animal’s brain tissue. What palaeoneurologists usually study is the inside of the skull: a natural cast, a laboratory-made cast, or a three-dimensional digital reconstruction called an endocast. It records the shape and volume of the braincase, which can provide cautious evidence about brain size, broad proportions, some surface impressions and vascular traces.
That evidence has a hard boundary. An endocast is not a fossilized mind. It cannot directly show what an extinct animal thought, whether it used language, or how intelligent it was. Those claims require multiple lines of evidence, such as anatomy, ecology, technology, developmental patterns and comparisons with living species.

What an endocast actually is
The brain sits inside a bony container, the cranial cavity. After death, sediment or mineral deposits can fill that cavity and harden. The resulting natural cast follows the inner surface of the skull. Scientists can also make a physical cast from a prepared fossil or reconstruct the cavity digitally from CT or micro-CT scans. All three products are endocasts: representations of the braincase interior, not preserved neural tissue.
The methods and their limits are described in “From fossils to mind” in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience (2023). A digital model may look like a brain in a photograph, but its geometry comes from bone surfaces, sediment boundaries and reconstruction decisions. The image is therefore evidence about the space in which the brain was housed.

Three ways an endocast is made
- Natural endocast: sediment or mineral material fills the braincase and later survives as part of the fossil.
- Synthetic cast: researchers prepare the inner skull and fill or coat it with a casting material.
- Virtual endocast: CT or micro-CT slices are segmented and assembled into a three-dimensional model without physically opening the specimen.
Fossils may be incomplete, crushed, shifted or distorted. Virtual reconstruction can repair some postmortem damage, but aligning fragments, estimating missing surfaces and deciding how much deformation to reverse all introduce uncertainty. A study of Australopithecus afarensis used conventional and synchrotron CT with virtual reconstruction specifically to address such damage; the procedure improves access to evidence without turning a reconstruction into an observation of the original brain (Science Advances, 2020).
What the fossil can measure with the most confidence
Endocranial volume
The most common numerical result is endocranial volume: the volume of the reconstructed cranial cavity. It is often reported in cubic centimetres (cc) and used as an indirect estimate of brain size. It is not the exact volume of the living brain. The cavity also contains cerebrospinal fluid, meninges and blood vessels, and the brain does not press perfectly against every part of the skull.
That distinction matters when comparing species. A difference of a few cubic centimetres can reflect preservation, segmentation or reconstruction choices as well as biology. Researchers should state how complete the specimen is, how the cavity was measured and whether the value comes from a physical cast or a digital model.

An endocast can preserve overall length, width and height, plus the relative expansion of broad regions. These proportions are generally more defensible than claims about a named cortical area. Shape comparisons are most informative when specimens are aligned using the same method and compared with appropriate living relatives.

Surface impressions and vessels
Large grooves, ridges and impressions of meningeal blood vessels can sometimes appear on an endocast. They may indicate where the braincase wall contacted tissue or where vessels ran, but the feature’s visibility and preservation vary widely. A faint groove is not automatically a specific sulcus, and a proposed sulcus is not automatically a map of a functional brain region.
Why cavity volume is not a score for intelligence
A larger endocranial volume can be biologically meaningful, but it is not a single-number ranking of cognitive ability. Brain size scales partly with body size, and different lineages can arrive at similar volumes through different evolutionary histories. Comparisons should therefore include body-size estimates, sex and age where known, taxonomic context, and the uncertainty around each measurement.
Even among living animals, cognitive performance depends on more than total volume: neural organization, connectivity, developmental timing, sensory demands and behavior all matter. A fossil endocast cannot recover those variables directly. The appropriate statement is that one specimen had a larger or smaller estimated cranial cavity than another under specified methods—not that it was “smarter.”
How reliable is an endocast as a brain proxy?
A useful test is to compare endocasts made from living people with the people’s actual brain scans. A 2021 Journal of Anatomy study examined five living human individuals in a three-dimensional comparison (“Are endocasts reliable proxies for brains?”). It found close correspondence across much of the brain and endocast, but a notable mismatch in the superior region.

The result supports a careful middle position. Endocasts can preserve meaningful large-scale shape information, yet they are not exact replicas. The study’s sample was five individuals, not a population estimate, and its findings do not erase uncertainty in damaged or exceptionally shaped fossils. A feature that appears robust across multiple specimens is stronger evidence than a feature seen once on a partial reconstruction.
What this validation does—and does not—show
- It shows that some external contours can track internal brain geometry reasonably well in living humans.
- It shows that correspondence is uneven, with some regions less faithfully represented.
- It does not prove that every fossil endocast preserves every cortical boundary.
- It does not convert an endocast into a record of neural activity, memories or subjective experience.
Why sulci and brain regions are difficult to identify
Sulci are grooves on the cerebral surface. On a fossil endocast, they may be incomplete, blurred, mirrored by bone irregularities or altered by breakage. The brain of the extinct species is usually unknown, so researchers cannot always tell whether a groove corresponds to a particular sulcus, a vessel impression or an artifact of preparation.
A 2023 Proceedings of the Royal Society B analysis tested how accurately experts identify sulci on endocasts and discusses the resulting uncertainty (“What do brain endocasts tell us?”). Its implications are practical: labels should be presented as hypotheses with confidence levels, not as self-evident anatomy.

The 2021 proxy-comparison article quotes Symington: “That the simplicity or complexity of the cerebral fissures and convolutions cannot be determined with any degree of accuracy from endocranial casts, even on complete skulls, much less on reconstructions from imperfect skulls.” This is a historical warning quoted by that paper, not a claim that all modern endocast work is impossible.

A concrete example: the Gona DAN5/P1 cranium
The specimen DAN5/P1 from Gona in Ethiopia is a good illustration of what an individual fossil can and cannot establish. The cranium is dated to approximately 1.5–1.6 million years ago. Its published analysis reports an estimated cranial capacity of 598 cc and compares its broad endocranial proportions with forms assigned to Homo habilis or Australopithecus (Journal of Human Evolution, 2023).
Those are legitimate observations and interpretations: a measured cavity estimate, visible proportions and a comparison with other fossil groups. The 598 cc figure is not a direct measurement of brain tissue, and it is not a measurement of intelligence. The taxonomic comparison is also an interpretation that depends on which specimens and definitions are included.
| Question | What DAN5/P1 can contribute | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| How large was the braincase? | An estimated endocranial capacity of 598 cc for the published reconstruction. | The exact volume of living neural tissue. |
| What did its interior look like? | Broad proportions and any preserved impressions judged reliable by the authors. | A certain identification of every sulcus or cortical boundary. |
| What did the animal do? | Comparative anatomical context with other hominin fossils. | Language, planning, beliefs, intelligence or a specific behavior. |
How scientists compare fossil brains responsibly
A useful comparison keeps the evidence on separate axes rather than collapsing it into a “smartness” scale.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check the measurement: record endocranial volume, the segmentation method and whether the number is estimated from a complete or partial cavity.
- Describe shape: compare length, width, height and broad proportions using the same landmarks and orientation.
- Grade surface features: distinguish clearly preserved impressions from ambiguous grooves; report whether multiple observers agree.
- Audit preservation: note missing pieces, crushing, displacement, mineral infill and the parts altered during virtual reconstruction.
- Use biological context: compare with body size, age, sex where known, close relatives and a suitable sample rather than a single dramatic specimen.
- Separate observation from inference: state what the model shows first, then identify the evolutionary or behavioral interpretation and its assumptions.
This framework prevents a common error: treating a numerical estimate, a visual contour and a behavioral story as if they were the same kind of evidence.

What an endocast cannot reveal directly
Thoughts and subjective experience
No fossil cavity preserves a memory, emotion, intention or conscious experience. These are functions of living neural systems, not shapes that can be read directly from bone.
Language
An endocast may contribute to a broader argument about brain organization, but it cannot demonstrate that an extinct animal spoke, understood grammar or used a particular symbolic system. Such claims need converging evidence from anatomy, archaeology and comparative biology.
Exact behavior
A contour cannot, on its own, prove tool use, hunting strategy, cooperation, parenting or social structure. Behavioral claims become stronger only when endocast evidence agrees with independent traces such as tools, cut marks, habitats or developmental patterns.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA named cortical function
Assigning a fossil groove to a specific modern brain region can overstate the evidence. Even when a correspondence is plausible, the extinct species may have differed in organization and connectivity. Use terms such as “consistent with” or “has been interpreted as” when that is what the data support.
How reconstruction choices affect the result
CT-based work is powerful because it can reveal hidden cavities and digitally reassemble fragments. It is not choice-free. Analysts must select scan resolution, distinguish bone from sediment, fill gaps, smooth surfaces and decide how to undo deformation. Different reasonable choices can produce slightly different volumes or contours.
A careful publication should therefore show the original fragments, the reconstruction workflow and uncertainty ranges where possible. Readers should be wary of a perfectly smooth digital braincase presented without information about missing anatomy or deformation correction. The more incomplete the fossil, the more important these disclosures become.
A practical checklist for reading a claim about a fossil brain
- Does “brain” actually mean an endocast or endocranial volume?
- Is the number cavity volume, and does the statement explain that cerebrospinal fluid, meninges and vessels occupy part of that space?
- Was the specimen complete, distorted or digitally reconstructed?
- Are surface features described with confidence levels, or are uncertain grooves given definite names?
- Is the comparison adjusted for body size and made with appropriate relatives?
- Does the conclusion jump from shape to intelligence or behavior without independent evidence?
- Can you distinguish the authors’ direct observations from their evolutionary interpretation?
The bottom line for readers
Fossils can reveal the architecture of an animal’s braincase and, through endocasts, offer cautious estimates of cavity volume, broad brain shape, some vascular traces and selected surface impressions. They cannot preserve a direct record of thoughts or provide a standalone intelligence score. The strongest interpretations keep measurement, reconstruction uncertainty and behavioral inference separate—and explain exactly where the evidence stops.
